Sidra, Sultanate of Hajr

The East Sidra Air Force Base, normally no more than an off-limits military location to most Hajris, today found itself the center of attention, in both the Far Himyarite nation as well as the world. In the past few weeks the base had been subjected to a frantic work pace at odds with the calm of military discipline it normally found itself under, as work teams scrambled to transform it from air force base to the site of the biggest international convention Hajr had ever seen. Trillions of dirhams were at stake.

Built on the eastern edge of the Sidra metropolitan area (the biggest in the Sultanate and the country's economic and cultural hub), the road to the base was usually only frequented by military vehicles. The slums and ramshackle neighborhoods that characterized the edge of most Hajri cities were kept a good distance from the base's perimeter by the occasional bulldozing.

The past week, however, had seen a constant stream of commercial trucks pour into the base as Sultan Huseyn's military exhibition was built up. Defense companies from a dozen different countries had set up shop in one of the several hangars that had been cleared especially for IMEX, or out on the tarmac. Another base would have to supply the patrols protecting the Sultanate's airspace the coming days.

It was early in the evening as the last preparations had been finished, and, under extraordinarily heavy security, the motorcade carrying the Sultan of Hajr himself pulled into the military base turned expo center. Nevertheless the temperature was still 35 degrees Celsius, and the base's generators were working overtime to keep the air conditioning that had been installed in the hangars running. Hangar 1, the largest, had been converted into a convention center. It was here that the Hajri monarch was to open what he hoped would become one of the world's most important military events.

* * *

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome His Majesty, your patron, the Sultan of Hajr, Huseyn the Victorious!"

The announcer backed away from the Sultan in deference as the monarch walked up to the microphone, flanked by officials from the Diwans of Foreign Affairs and War and several Princes of the royal family, dressed in his traditional robes of office, the dark bisht cloak over a white thobe, and wearing a shemagh of rich fabric in the Hajri style, signifying his royalty. Thrust in the black sash around his waist was the wicked curve of the khanjar dagger, traditional symbol of masculinity. He greeted the standing ovation he was given with a pearly white smile, and waited until it subsided.

"Esteemed guests, We welcome you to the International Military Exhibition, to great and ancient Sidra, and to our beloved Hajr!" the Sultan began, speaking in the finely clipped English he had learnt while studying abroad as a Prince, laced with a slight Arabic accent.

"We have brought you together, here, in order to foster and create an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, so that this venue might become a source of new commerce and new trade. It is Our sincerest hope that this event will mark a great leap forward in the defense industry and the provision of security for states around the world.

"At this venue, state parties and defense contractors from across Europe can meet and develop new partnerships, strengthening both the industry as well as state security. We have labored in order to provide a stage on which leaders in defense technology can showcase their latest products before the world's eye. IMEX is a window to the world, and for the world to look into.

"The coming five days, you of the leading defense companies of the world will be introduced to the most advanced and modern technologies on the market. You will have the opportunity to meet with state parties and seal lucrative deals. With IMEX, We aim to create new markets and new economies for the defense industry.

"Hajr is more than happy to have you. Our great nation welcomes you with open arms. To a successful today, and a successful tomorrow!"

With a flourish, the Sultan produced a wine glass, handed to him by a servant hovering nearby. He toasted with the assembled corporate representatives, and downed the expensive champagne inside in one go. There were no camera's or pesky reporters here, of course, to register such a breach of Islam by the Sultan of Hajr himself.

Following another standing ovation, the monarch descended from the platform and mingled amongst his gathered guests. This evening was for the reception, before the exhibition and convention proper would begin tomorrow. That was when the real work would be done.

It was too hot today.

The Commandry's delegation felt like they were roasting in the desert heat. Exaggerated as such feelings might be to come from the depths of a Slavian winter to a blistering Hajiri summer was an almost unbearable shock to the system. They were on a mission though, the SHK had made it abundantly clear they wanted a foothold in the Hajiri arms market. It was up to them to deliver.

The Delegation was jointly headed by Vladik Petrova, CEO of arms monopoly RusExport and CGF General-Major Klym Novokhatskyj acting as senior representative of the armed forces. MID Podpolkovnik Kazimir Rybalko, their lead interpreter and Hajir expert was the third most senior member of the delegation. All three were here for the gathering with a handful of aides. The small army of staff that made up the rest of the delegation were elsewhere frantically completing the final preparations for tomorrows exhibition.

When the Sultan had finished his speech the Slavians joined the toast, then helped themselves to a much needed shot of cool Vodka. Well they sat they chatted among themselves.

Vladik wiped the sweat from his brow for the third time since sitting down "God Damn it's to hot here. It's like being inside an oven!".

Kazimir was more restrained than his colleague but still found himself wiping the sweat from his eyes. He couldn't remember being this hot since NBC training. He called his brother a fool when he bought time shares in ski resort north of Novgorod. Right now it didn't seem like such a bad idea after all...

Klym remained stoic but silently he found himself cursing his heavy white beard, worn in the old Kyivan style, for the first time in his life. He poured his second shot. "This climate is unseemly.".

Eagerly they awaited something, anything to break the monotony of heat.

Advance warning had been given only to the Hajri hosts that the Anbati Minister of Defense, General Yahya al-Khoraish, would be heading the military-commercial delegation from the Republic of Anbat to the IMEX. Not for any particular motivations of secrecy, but simply because transparency was one of those things in which Anbati government needed a lot of practice.

Accompanying General al-Khoraish was a retinue of officials from the Ministry of Defense and all four branches of service, as well as a group of commercial representatives from the Ministry of Defense Arsenal and the military division of Lakhm Engineering. The latter were responsible for what little promotion of Anbati military hardware was to take place in IMEX, and al-Khoraish had been largely uninterested in their work of setting up advertising stands and preparing various kinds of demonstrations. While he and his retinue of uniformed Anbati officers attended the Sultan's opening speech, the representatives from the few Anbati arms companies were busy arranging scantily clad promotional girls, video screens, brochures, scale models and the occasional full-sized mock-up.

Anbati military industry only made what wasn't feasible to import, and designed only what wasn't feasible to manufacture with a license. For example, Lakhm Engineering produced quite a few wheeled armored vehicles -the unrelated Saqr APC and the Saqr MRAP and the Shakil and Sharad armored cars - as few foreign models offered the simplicity and the adaptability to both counter-insurgency roles and full-scale warfare that the Republican Army demanded. Lakhm hoped to sell a few of those at IMEX, as it hoped to sell the A/T-52 line of basic trainers and counter-insurgency aircraft, the attack capability of which had come as an exclipit demand of the Republican Army for an aircraft capable of assisting its ground forces in situations that did not warrant the deployment of jet aircraft. The Arsenal of the Ministry of Defense, on the other hand, was showcasing its line of missiles and artillery: Khalid anti-aircraft missiles, AT-800 and 955 anti-tank missiles, AT-85 and 05 anti-tank rocket launchers, 120 and 81mm mortars, Salib towed artillery, Saiqa rocket launchers and Saif ballistic missiles. All relatively rugged, but still modern, systems already in the service of the Anbati Republican Army.

Models and videos of Malik class frigates and K class corvettes, along with a couple of landing vessel types, had also been put on display. However, no one expected to be able to sell those to anyone. Even General al-Khoraish thought that buying export models from foreign states would have been an easier and more effective way to modernize the Anbati Navy, but both President Zureiq and the Naval leadership thought of it as some sort of an infantile matter of prestige. The Anbati move from landing ships built to commercial standards into warships hadn't exactly been smooth.

Al-Khoraish had decided not to concern himself with the matter of advancing Anbati military exports, for the role of him and his officers in this meeting would be to see what the conference presented for the plans to modernize elements of the Republican Army. In addition, an unofficial meeting with Hajri representatives had been agreed upon. Official reasons put aside, he was happy to be abroad and away from the intrigues of Phezzanite power politics.

When the Sultan concluded his speech, al-Khoraish and the other Anbati officers joined in the applause and subsequently decided to intermingle with the crowd for a moment. It was best to make use of the opportunity before their actual program would commence.

A century of innovation, but not one fucking day of normal weather

Mr. Evgeniy Golubev tried to blink away a stinging drop of sweat that had seeped into his eye, as he cursed the motto of his employer. For the first time in a long while, he truly sympathized with RusExport, Vikurin Industries' primary competitor in the global arms market. Apparently, both Sarmatian delegations were suffering from the relentless Hajri heat that was so oppressive, even the climate-controlled interior of the expo hangar was extremely muggy. Golubev felt the haze of a thousand yaks' breath on his brow, as he cursed again. The other three members of the delegation, Gen. Igor Uzbyetov, Special Envoy Innokentiy Paveladze, and IPK political officer Lev Koslov didn't seem to mind the heat as much. And they were the ones wearing the ballistic vests.

Vikurin Industries was the largest arms manufacturer in Kryobaijan, followed closely by the Krüger-Suporov Gruppe. However, VI was the only firm that was allowed to attend the IMEX summit, as the new IPK government believed it had the best chance of winning contracts, and was in greater need of business than the other arms manufacturers in the USSK. Although most Kryobaijani corporations had only recently been privatized after the IPK's economic liberalizations, and were struggling to stay afloat, Vikurin Industries was truly floundering, despite continued government subsidies. They needed a contract from the Hajris.

And they were going to get one, inch'allah.

The majority of Vikurin Industry's products consisted of reverse engineered or copied Kyivan designs, many of which were produced at a much lower cost and often suffered in quality because of it. Kryobaijani factories could manufacture older Kyivan assault rifle models for less than 20 euros each, but they weren't close to the quality of the Type 91 rifles that were indigenous to the Commandry. However, some of the Kryobaijani products were more than shoddy knockoffs. The Kyivan Type 72 main battle tank, for example, was a nearly vintage model that was nevertheless an appealing and potentially effective option for nations operating on a tight budget. Vikurin Industries produced copies of Type 72s (and the Kryobaijani government had a large stockpile to sell, as well), that could be retrofitted with add-on kits that VI also produced. If the Hajri could provide skilled tankers, adequate maintenance and ammunition, such tanks could start to pose a threat to more modern armor.

And that was to say nothing of the select products that Vikurin Industries had designed themselves. Aside from a large selection of higher-quality small arms, multiple rocket launcher artillery such as the CV-21 "Grad", and its variants were among VI's top sellers. Such cheap platforms would allow the Hajri ground forces to deliver devastating, long-range, rapid attacks on targets and then leave the area before counter-battery fire could begin. Hopefully the Kryobaijani delegation could interest the Hajris in such products, at prices that the Arabs wouldn't be able to find anywhere else.

That is, if they could get hold of the Sultan. The small Kryobaijani delegation started making its way towards the Hajri royal, stopping on the way to greet and chat with other representatives at the party. Most of the conviviality was simply for the sake of keeping up appearances, however. If the Kryobaijanis could have had it their way, they would have gunned down everyone else present at the meeting except their hosts. Such demonstrations of firepower would have to wait until the exhibition the next day, unfortunately.

As the Director of the National Defense Industries, General Auguste Vuillemin was the natural choice to lead the Belmontien delegation to the IMEX. Having arrived in a bus, marked with the Belmontien flag and with number plates of the Belmontien consulate in Sidra, all thirty eight members of the Belmontien delegation started disembarking. Although Hajr was generally a hot country, Sidra was much cooler, compared to other parts of the Sultanate, mainly due to its location along the coast. Keen to make a place for themselves in the Himyari market, all sixteen companies which formed the NDI had agreed to participate in the southern arms exhibition. After all, Hajr was looking to modernize its armed forces and there was a huge potential for money making in that nation.

General Vuillemin went over to the Anbati delegation and met them. Their two countries were allies, they needed to show that to the world. One by one, he met each of the members of that delegation and members of the Belmontien delegation did the same. Vuillemin had to admit that some of stuff that the Anbati arms industry was churning out was respectable in its quality. After chatting, briefly, with Anbati defense minister, Vuillemin left behind his delegation and briskly strode to where the Sultan and some of his compatriots were standing, talking amongst themselves.

As he walked, his mind raced through the various products the NDI was displaying at the exhibition. Certainly the M5 MBT was something that would interest the Hajri military. One of the most advanced in the world and one of the most rugged, the tank was ideal for any environment and its firepower would put any enemy on a direct path to make their maker. Then, of course, were the various fighters that had been transported to Sidra, aircraft were something of a specialty for the Belmontien arms industry. Belmont's arms industry was famous for its original products, high levels of technology and quality. Vuillemin was confident that the NDI would find business in the Sultanate.

Seeing the ties that existed between Belmont and Hajr, the Foreign Office had contacted the Sultan in advance and had managed to arrange a small meeting between the two men. "Your Majesty," Vuillemin said, bowing in front of the Sultan. "I am General Vuillemin, Director of the National Defense Industries, Her Majesty The Queen sends her regards," he said in slightly accented English.

Nutty's better half
To His Excellency Sultan Huseyn of Hajr,

I must decline your offer to display Radilan military equipment at the International Exposition. It is the policy of the Republic to not show off our military arsenal. I will be attending the exposition, but not on official business.

With gratitude and respect,

Dr. Asif DuPaul,
Radilan Ambassador to the Sultanate of Hajr

Politically the Franconian delegation was led by the Minister of Defence, Graf Otto von der Eulenburg, scion of a traditionally military-involved aristocratic families. One of Eulenburg's forebears even served as a military advisor to Hajri sultan in the late 19th century during Franken's period of indirect colonial rule in the southern sultanate. Other than with Anbat, Franken and Hajr terminated their colonial relationship in an almost cordial way and both countries have been quite close up to today.

Before the earl would proceed to visit the exhibition "booths" set up by Franconia's defence and armament contractors, the minister respectfully approached the Sultan. "Your majesty, thank you for invitation to this expo. I'm pleased to convey you best regards by His Majesty King Alfred IV. He regrets that he could not come personally, but the Batavian situation requires his presence at home." King Alfred had won some admiration among Hajris when he dared to ride a camel during his first visit to Hajr despite never having rode one before. Ever since there were three royal Franconian camels looked after in the capital.

After having exchanged some pleasantries with the Sultan, the tall aristocrat went to the Franconians booths. Königliche Waffenmanufaktur, the kingdom's largest defence conglomerate, had some original exhibits at its large booth, such as innovative armaments systems, ammunition series as well as a rather impressive - at least Eulenburg thought so - anti-air missile launching system. Next to KWM was the big joint booth by an assortment of medium-sized and minor defence suppliers, e.g. FMW Rüstung (motors and engines) or Pegnitz Defence (mainly stationary and mobile land defence systems).

Right to this particular booth the showed off their products, more exactly models and computer animations. The real ones had been parked in the military section of the port of Sidra. There three vessels - the Laura submarine class, the Louisa and Christina frigate classes. The latter one was the VFS' current pride and joy, a stealth-capable frigate. If a delegation was interested in seeing one, they would be brought there alongside VFS representatives.

Wiese had long ago began seeing itself as a very important, neutral armaments manufacturer and exporter, and when the news of an IMEX in Hajr were released, Wieser producers and government officials alike rejoiced. To present, the country's arms industry, with its strengths mainly in land systems, had managed to spread its tentacles around several states to varying degrees. This was seen as a big chance, by Augsburg, to further Wieser exports and give the economy yet another boost.

A strong delegation had been dispatched, led by the Imperial Minister for War Maximilian von Bumgarner, with representatives from virtually : Carl Walther, Heckler & Koch, Krauss-Maffei, Rheinmetall, and even the multinational aerospace giant . Along them were several samples, from Leopard 2A4 tanks to Taurus heavy APCs, MG-3 machine guns and even military helicopters like the Dauphin 2.

Of course, the War Ministry wasn't missing. Several Leopard 1A5 tanks, made as beautiful as possible and refit with the latest systems, had been drawn up from the Landwehr reserves and brought for trials by the Hajr military should it be required. They featured several options, from the original 105 mm guns to the 120 mm L44 guns of their successor, the Leopard 2 series. If required, such tanks could be provided quickly, in numbers and with success to any customer who might like them in the exposition.

As IMEX has turned out be a very important military trade show, Deputy Defence Minister Gerard Fontaine as well as Secretary for Montelimar/Himyar Affairs, Louis Burnett has accompanied Marcel Jardin, Chairman of the Board, , along with the usual sales and technical teams from the assorted defence contractors as well as some un-named officials from certain government agencies to keep an eye on, not only the CID exhibit, but to scope out the others exhibits as well.

Though most of what CID has to offer is still on display in one form, from large, highly detailed scale models of vessels built by Vendôme to actual samples of equipment ranging from Hautefort Arms infantry weapons to select vehicles of Cinq-Mars Industries' line of combat vehicles to samples of combat and transport aircraft, both fixed and rotory wing, from both Beaufort Aviation and DeMorney, it is made known by the staff that that not all was available to everyone. Unlike some arms manufacturers who will sell weapons to anyone for a price, the CID and its associated companies take their responsibilities very seriously, not only to king and country, but also the allies who the CID provides weapons systems for. Though it doesn't mean that only certain countries will be able to buy what the CID provides, but unlike those other dealers, it does mean that the CID has certain criterias and where a customer falls in those criterias is what would be made available to them. That being said, due to the fact those criteria are set by the government of Montelimar, the criteria a nation falls into has been known to change now and then, which is why officials from both the Defence and Foreign Ministries have been made conveniently present at the IMEX.

As they waited the Slavians summed up their opposition. The Kryobaijani's were the most direct and most expected, the strategy to deal with them was quite straightforward. Convince the Hajiri's that Commandry quality was a better deal than Kryobaijani quantity. Technology was only half the battle though. Politically the Slavians believed they had a major edge. On one hand Communism was an ideology with very little international credibility, on the other the Commandry was a much larger power than Kryobaijan that could offer many things to Hajr in the long run. Exploiting these facts would be vital.

Anbat they agreed was the second most direct competitor. Their technology was more distinct from the Commandry's than Kryobaijans and arguably between the two in capability and cost. The Commandry possessed a similar advantage in size over Anbat but Anbat was a neighbor of the Hajir with shared ethnic ties. On the other hand Anbat was not at odds with the Commandry and Hajir could conceivably court both. Privately there was even some hope among the Slavians of making sales to Hajr as well.

The Westerners, they were a whole different category. They has technology beyond even what the Commandry could offer in many areas, but it came at a correspondingly higher cost. Franken and Montelimar both had strong lineups, though Franken was tilted towards the naval market where the Commandry has not made any significant offerings. They were both EDF though which added an important dimension to their offerings. Major purchases from them would potentially signal that Hajir was looking to develop ties with the EDF, a move that would have much larger geo-political implications.

Belmont was one to watch. They had a large range of capable products and were a major independent power, even if they didn't reach the level of the Commandry. Belmont had been pursuing an extremely aggressive foreign policy across Europe and the Slavians had no doubt they would push hard for closer ties with Hajr.

Wiese was another potential wrinkle. More than perhaps any western nation they offered systems in the same class as those from the Commandry, many quite advanced. Politically they were an independent middle power as a landlocked nation their ability to project influence abroad was limited. Thanks to that purchases from Wiese were unlikely to have any wider political ramifications, how that would affect the Hajiri's calculations was a critical unknown.

One thing was certain. This would not be an easy sale.

Raymond Krandel, as Vice President in charge of sales, it was his responsibility to coordinate things with the companies associated with so that they are best represent here at IMEX. Though Atlantis Maritime, Bedford-Walker, Hawker, Mayaland Tech, Royal Mayaland Armoury and Willys-Overland have all provided displays and representatives, it is Krandel's job to make sure the right people are steered to the right places.

Krandel knows the MDIA is up against some stiff competition, from not only nations not allied with Mayaland but also from some that are, and though MDIA companies provide equipment that is as advanced as any other, at a competitive price, it is not these that is the bread and butter of foreign sale. The target costumer is not those that can afford the best, though they are most certainly welcome, it is those customers that once they purchased a product, the cost of maintenance is less, with vehicles based on a common chassis or aircraft built on a common airframe, or are capable of multiple roles, with moduals allowing vessels to fulfill different roles with little downtime. It is these costomers that is the target, the ones that want something that can do more than one thing or a vehile or aircraft line in with one part can be used on more than one type of vehicle, these are the ones Krandel a special lookout for.

Guiana had only one home grown defence contractor that has any kind of overseas sales, and that one was . James Hargrove, Assistant Director of Foreign Sales, has been placed in charge of Buell's display at the IMEX. Though not as large elaborate as most of the other arms industry displays of other nations, including those of Guiana's allies, it is hoped that the reputation of the ruggedness and reliability of Buell products will bring the customers in.

Though Volga had its own arms industry, government controlled of course, the Republic had no delusions that it could compete with those companies that were represented here at the IMEX. Even so, this would not prevent the government in Bolghar from wanting a look at what the other guy actually had and that is why a black ZiL sedan with the consulate plates of the Volga Republic carrying two men arrive at the exhibition. It is the assignment of Boris Ravkov, Deputy Head of Mission and Captain Igor Androvich, Military Attaché from the Volgan consulate in Sidra to get a good look at what is there and report back to their superiors in Bulghar.

As it has been since the day that the western half of Bulgharia came under communist rule, it has been one of the duties of intelligence officer within the Kama consulates to keep an eye on the comings and going of the Volgans wherever they may be and today isn't any different. Though the Military Attaché, Lt. Georgi Obretenov of the Kama consulate would be visiting the IMEX as would be expected, the two men with him are agents of the Foreign Intelligence Service and it would be them that will shadow the Volgans as they browsed the exhibits.

While the Franconian exhibitors were doing their very best to convince prospective buyers, Defence Minister Graf Eulenburg and his advisors were strolling through the expo's aisles. For the Central European kingdom this event was a welcome opportunity to meet with trusted armament supply partners and maybe to strike this or that profitable bargain. As the defence minister naturally lacked the technical insight, he had senior experts of his ministries' subordinate office for procurement and defence technology accompany him.

The Kryobajiani booth caught his advisors' attention. Actually the Royal Armed Forces did not lack proper funding to afford state of the art weaponry. However, it was considered far more economical to supply freshman recruits and conscripts with cheap armament before allowing them to practise with high-quality material. Thus the Franconian military was looking for a producer of cheap yet middle quality hand-fire weapons every two to three years to re-fill their stocks of rookies' practise devices. Furthermore, a deal with the Kryobajianis could have some positive political impact.

"Gentlemen, could you show us a selection of your standard products, please? We're looking for rookie-proof but not too expensive armament. Something you can easily handle but won't cost a fortune to replace if you break it.", Graf Otto von der Eulenburg kindly asked.

Separated by hundreds upon hundreds of miles, beyond an moreover, from the Sarmatian Steppes on against the currents which separate two mighty continents, directly in to the city of Sidra, two voices exchanged a seemingly calm conversation. To the party involved, it was far less then, with Maresal Huszar holding back the reigns from unleashing one of his infamous tirades, positively filled to the brim with molten fury. Huszar’s voice was not as booming and overpowering like your common Ziv might expect to hear from the disciplined officer, instead he seemed tired - perhaps exhausted from another verbal assault he must have dished out upon an innocent soul or two.

Mister Fedreizk, his friends were even referring to him as such these days, was born to a rare type of family: wealthy Komenogen. Within the modern Blue Union Captaincy you have your savage but formerly monarchist Sangemuntenia Captaincy, your elitist republican Plavi-Divovia Captaincy, and finally your agrarian loosely organized (near tribal in nature) Komenoge Captaincy. His luxury Ranch, originally constructed by his late but great Grandfather, sat atop one of the regions scarce hills, overlooking several hundred glorious kilometers of wheat fields. Union law of the current day dictated that he was not a slave owner per se, though several families continued an age old bloodline of farmhands, blacksmiths, and various craftsmen who felt a sense of attachment to the Fedreizk Family like members of a wolf pack, with Mister Fedreizk acting as an Alpha Male by way of overwhelming riches . . . and the Unions most extensive and unregulated private collection of firearms, explosives, and melee weapons in Zivotinje (which says something, if one is an aficionado), quite arguably in Sarmatia, and therein Europe as a whole. His "workers" too called him, near seven feet tall, Mister Fedreizk -- complimented by the children from his second marriage, who now refused to call him “Papa” or “Dad” like they once did, and stuck with the universal Mister Fedreizk.

“If you do not object sir, can I ask again why it is you could not have sent one of your own?” Mister Fedreizk queried from outside this defense extravaganza, leaning against a wall which felt painfully hot, like voluntarily pressing in to a frying pan. “I am sure a thousand Officers would have asked for this task, yet you are asking me now. .As I stand no more then fifteen feet from the entrance, hell I have already seen a few Divovians march past to hawk their latest battle rifle exhibit.” Fedreizk persisted while still keeping his cool, even while his shoes must have been melting him in place like a plastic figurine.

Huszar sighed “We know, we know”, before pausing to collect himself. “What candidates I picked before you were either too racist, drunk, or busy to do this job” the Maresal’s voice warmed just enough for him to sound sincere “A Komenogen is most socially acceptable beyond our Sarmatian Steppes where a humble man always appeals over our ethnicities often rowdy attitude.” he added. “Besides Mister Fedreizk, I know that you can make a few days productive without drinking or smoking!” Huszar said with a light chuckle.

“Fair enough, sir, but right quick: What exactly is in this for me?” Fedreizk asked firmly, wondering why he should agree to give up his fantasy adventure amongst European Lords of War.

“Enough of our Union Battle Enhanced Rifles, kit and all, to arm your entire staff. If not for standard service rifle, at least a reliable backup to what they are walking around with now.” the Maresal suggested, “I understand those men are issued only the best”.

“Again, fair enough - thats a deal sir” with a chuckle of his own, Fedreizk unstuck himself from that dreadful scorching wall, internally wondering if would have to check for holes in the shirt, and blisters on his back later in the day. Before long, his little negotiation with Huszar was finalized, and he was free to coast around with both hands and voice free, if only to accomplish his ‘mission’, if it could be called that at all. Instead of ogling weapons systems and pricing his next big purchase, Mister Fedreizk took this time and effort and applied it to shaking hands and introducing himself as a “Union Man” to those present who stood to make more then just a deal of currency, rather diplomacy in its stead. Maresal Huszar was quite aware that certain players would be making moves under the guise of this “IMEX”, while the majority pushed their products on each other with futility. The Blue Union Captaincy needed a piece, or a player to participate in this game as well, and Mister Fedreizk of Komenoge would reluctantly fulfill such a role.

The was responsible for the participation of Levantine weapons exporters in these kind of exhibitions, and had arranged for a number of arms manufacturers to come to Sidra to participate in the IMEX. The stands of the Levantine arms manufacturers were set up near each other, forming a sort of compound at the center of which was a model of the pride of the Levantine Air Force, the aF-34 Icarus, which had been placed on a small stage and been put in dark paint, in Levantine colors. Around this central booth there were a number of booth, each waving copious numbers of Levantine flags, if there was one branch in the Levant where patriotism was prevalent, it was the military-industrial complex.

While a number of booths were dedicated to the sale of small surface ships and airplanes, the CWE had the opinion that the IMEX would be most fit for the sale of armoured vehicles, artillery guns, logistics solutions and naturally small arms. Segarra and Orihuela had set up a small arms range where it was possible to test out the small arms the Levant was selling, among which the W4 Assault Rifle, the mass-produced W3 Battle Rifle, the W2E Designated Marksman Rifle and of course the successful Ap-5 Submachine gun.

Further ahead, a fully outfitted and functional Cr-06 Cuirassier Main Battle Tank was on display, the most modern tank the Levant had to offer flanked by the more antiquated but less expensive Cr-94 Caracole, an adaptation of the T-72.While most armoured vehicles produced by the Levant were on display, the Levant has historically specialized in smaller armoured and/or amphibious vehicles, the CWE had given prominent spots to the Hu-99 Fennek wheeled recon vehicle, the Am-54 Jackal and the AmS-19 Hyena.

Boris Golubev had entered into employment with Vikurin Industries through no small amount of nepotism. His brother, Evgeniy Golubev, had gotten him the job many years ago. However, Boris soon proved a capable salesman, and rose fast through the hierarchy of the corporation. As an important regional manager, he had been assigned to go with his brother to the IMEX convention. However, instead of mingling with royalty, he had been given the lesser responsibility of manning VI's booth at the hangar, while his peers went off and courted the Sultan. Although the real demonstrations wouldn't start until the next day, Boris still had a few displays set up, and was prepared to make a sale to any potential buyers.

And now he was confronted with the Franconians, who had happened upon VI's booth. The wealthy EDF leaders were the last ones who Boris expected to buy from the USSK, but he would gain whatever contracts he could. He put down the Hajri magazine he was reading and stood to greet the customers.

"Hello, thank you for your interest in Vikurin Industries' products. To be honest, you've come to the perfect producer to meet your needs for an economic, durable assault rifle. The classic Avtomat-Kryobaijani, model of 1947, would be an excellent choice. We produce countless varieties of this armament suited to whatever need you have. As a basic rifle that is virtually indestructible, inexpensive, and ultimately reliable, you will find it to be well-suited to arming your newest soldiers. As for a specific variant, I can recommend the AKM 7.62 mm, although we also have variants in the standard EDF/Franken calibres. I assure you, you will find not a cheaper nor more respected firearm for purchase at this entire convention."

From across the room, the Slavians were watching the Kryobaijani's intently.

"Meeting with the Franks now? I wonder what's going on?"

"You're thinking about this to much, it's nothing"

"I have the strangest feeling..."

"That's the heat. Have another shot of Vodka?"

The Slavians were eager to meet with the Hajiri's and get on with the expo, but there was yet no sign of that happening. The hangar was becoming more and more crowded Ziv's, Volgans, Bulgars, perhaps the Hajiri's were waiting for more tawdry guests? Regardless they couldn't say they were overtly impressed with the delays. Not they would let that get in the way of signing a deal.

Vladik felt his mind beginning to wander. "Do you think one of those Camel tours would be a good investment?"

Kazimir and Klym could only stare. "Excuse me?"

"Didn't you see? It was in the visitor program, travel the majestic Hajiri dunes on the back of a camel! I think we passed some on the way in to."

"Are you feeling alright Vladik?" Kazimir was becoming concerned at his colleagues erratic behaviour.

"It's nothing, nothing. It's just to hot that's all."

"Doesn't look bad, doesn't look bad at all -", Defence Minister Graf Eulenburg commented the AKM 7.62 mm exhibit piece he was holding, "- at least from almost lay point of view. Josef, would you have a look, please?" One of the senior technical experts of the office of procurement took the weapon from the minister. "On the first glance I have no objection, Herr Minister. Nevertheless, we will have to make a few tests before giving our clearance to order this weapon. Nevertheless, sir, for testing purposes we will have to order a significant batch anyway." The Franconian earl nodded jovially. "Excellent, then I suggest we'd prepare the papers for the first test order, Mr Golubev."

While the Kryobaijani VI representatives were delighted about the prospect of huge and lucrative contract, all EDF-related (including the Wieser corporations) exhibitors were instructed to spread the word about some special discount offers. The EDF companies' managements had been encouraged to do so by their respective governments.

  • Purchases from two different companies: 3% discount on each order
  • Purchases from three different companies: 3.5% discount on each order
  • Purchases from four different companies: 4% discount on each order
  • Purchases from five different companies: 4.5% discount on each order
  • Et cetera
