It is the 5th year of the Sparta-Thebes War. In the night of May 23, 1997, two bands of Thebian marauders made their to the capital of Sparta City, marching since May 22. They sneaked through the province of Lower Sparta by cover of night, unseen by any intelligence or the air force. The two bands looted the countryside and killed unsuspecting civilians in Lower Sparta. It was a guerilla mission conducted by the enemy on foreign soil, but they had an objective: to assassinate Prime Minister Stanislav Metros and targeted MPs of Parliament. Thebes wanted to take out the leadership of Outer Sparta to see if Sparta will go in disarray, as well as regaining any hope of winning or ensuring unconditional surrender on their terms.

On the morning of May 23, Spartan intelligence broke the codes of the Thebian marauders, composed of Special Army Group 23 and Special Army Group 39. They found out Group 23 is planning an attack on Parliament while 39 is planning an attack on Sparta Royal Palace, home of the monarch and the head of state. The two marauder groups both have 55 troops, along with special forces that could take out defenses and such. King Spyridon VII is in secret location before any of this happened, but the prime minister stayed behind in the Palace to oversee wartime affairs. His presence gave the Spartans hope in a war-torn era. General Vasilis Sarantos of Army Group Center warned Prime Minister Metros of an impending attack on the capital, including Parliament and Sparta Royal Palace. Metros decided to stay in the capital, but he ordered the Parliament and Palace to be on maximum security and had defenses built, including his room. Anti-aircraft guns were placed to deter enemy air fire, and turrets were placed at every entrance to defend. Snipers of the 5th and 40th infantry divisions provided extra gunfire and defenses; they were placed on the roofs of Parliament and the palace, respectively. However, there wasn't enough time to place all the turrets in all the locations, as the Thebian marauders planned the attacks to be quick and stealthy. That meant 100 troops of the 94th division of Army Group Center had to be placed in Sparta City. They couldn't spare any more men because the rest of the group had to fight Thebian forces elsewhere, especially to go on the offensive against them in the south. The 100 troops were led by Thomas Inestos.
