Federation President Langley Prepares for Second Term. - Capitol Gazette

Easily winning support for a second term from the Federation Council, President Walter Langley has called his win a mandate from the Council and the people. Speaking in Rygaard Square, President Langley thanked the council for his reelection and spoke about his plan for the future. On the continued expansion of the military President Langley said: "The Federation has endured several decades of peace and prosperity and I do not plan for that to change! That is why we will continue our military expansion projects, for the continued protection of the Federation." President Langley also spoke of the naturalization process: "Our naturalization process is rigorous and unrivaled in all of the world. Last year we successfully naturalized two hundred thousand immigrant children, now Westermen, our naturalizers should be commended and as in my last term I pledge to continue the streamlining of the process and increasing the Department of Naturalization's budget by three percent. Our founder would be proud of us were he here to see the progress we have made in making all men, Westermen."

With comments on infrastructure and welfare also part of President Langley's speech, the President's progressive path for the Federation is clear. The President also made it clear the importance of creating new bonds to friendly nations, making it a top priority of his second term to create an alliance that pledges to defend democratic values all over the world. In closing the President thanked his wife and children for their patience and support for him during an arduous campaigning process.

Hayate Radio Telescope Observes Nearing Asteroid. - Science Weekly

An asteroid approximately the size of an Arrow Motors pickup truck is expected to pass within two thousand miles of the planet later this month. The asteroid, classified as 2019FV02 was discovered last year on course for the planet by the Hayate Radio Telescope built by the Federation in the Hayate Island Federation Territory in the Hayate Sea. While the asteroid is not expected to hit the planet, the Federation is planning on increasing funding for FASA's (Federation Aeronautics and Space Agency) Near Europe Object Detection mission as the telescope continues to find objects entering our solar system that may pose a threat to our planet. The Hayate telescope, built in 1964 was originally meant to detect incoming ballistic missiles, but with creation of FASA in 1965 the construction of the telescope was changed to a scientific endeavor. The Hayate Telescope is credited with the discovery of several planets, pulsars and many other objects floating in the vastness of space, as well as an ongoing SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) mission. In 1993, the Hayate Telescope is credited with finding a 1.6km wide asteroid named 1993CX04 that could in the far future strike our planet and cause possibly world ending damage. Until that time comes the Hayate Telescope continues to search for alien life, possible habitable planets and dangerous objects threatening us with apocalypse.

Nor'easter Strikes East Coast. - Baldwin-Whitehall Gazette

Battering the city with seventy mile per hour winds and dumping up to 20-25 inches on the surrounding area, winter's first nor'easter has struck the west coast the Westernesse late last night. Many found themselves digging their cars out before the morning rush in nearby cities of Kordell and Brentwood. In Baldwin-Whitehall minor wind damage and flooding affected the opening of local schools and traffic patterns all over the city. No injuries were reported and damage across the region was minimal. Unfortunately more snow is forecast for the surrounding areas and another ten inches could be dumped in the next few days.

CubeCraft Number One Best Seller. - Westernesse Gaming Magazine

Khurkhazian made game, CubeCraft, is the number one selling game for children in the Federation, selling millions of copies over the last month to excited the parents of excited Westermen children across the country. Created by Vasyl Dzuba and Akagawa Maro, the simplistic, yet addicting game play has garnered a a massive following among Federation gamers. Our review of the game (9/10) praised the way the game continues to draw in the player and allow for player freedom to do and build whatever they want in a randomly generated game world. Unfortunately the online culture surrounding the game is filled with Khurkhazian trolls who type crude messages and plague Federation players with horrible latency.

Parents of younger players worry about the addicting nature of the game and some scientists say that players of the game exhibit violent tendencies caused by the violent nature of combat in the game. Activist parent groups have asked the Federation Council to create a study on the affects of video game violence on children and teenagers, but so far the Federation Council has not taken up the matter. WG Magazine has commissioned it's own study on video game violence and we shall publish our independent scientific findings when they come to us.

In the mean time, kids continue to play CubeCraft and companies across the world and the Federation are scrambling to create copies of the game, mostly found on mobile storefronts. WG Magazine has reviewed some of these knockoffs and have found them lacking, but a game called CubeWar has found interest among Federation gamers and image board users. CubeWar, a First Person Shooter version of CubeCraft create forts, trenches and tunnels in efforts to capture the enemy flag and protect their own. Meme's about the blue team fighting the red team have cropped up on Federation websites. Stand by for our review of CubeWar in the next issue of WG Magazaine!

Remion UFO Report Intrigues Federation UFO Hunters. - Charleroi City Record

Federation UFO hunters are abuzz about the latest UFO news coming out of Remion after the government there made public their report on UFO's in their region. Other's have started demanding that the Federation also follow suit and declassify records on UFO's spotted in Federation airspace and over Federation overseas territories. So far the Federation Council and President have remained as tight lipped as ever, last year a report from the Federation Air Force leaked, the report detailed a F-21 Phantom chasing a cigar shaped UFO that had shot up out of the sea and had been tracked by a destroyer of a carrier group deployed somewhere between the west coast of Westernesse and the Federation Overseas Territories in the Hayate Sea. So far the Air Force and the civilian government has denied the existence of this report and has refused to comment any further.

"The Sky Security Office has no new information on any such so called 'UFO' activity over Touzen air space. Any such rumors should be treated as such: Rumors. We maintain that the phenomena that have been caught on tape by fishing vessel crews over the Sea of Oikawa are of natural origin, likely related to electromagnetic interactions in the lower stratosphere. We trust that our scientific community will exhaustively determine the exact workings behind these interactions."

Naturalization Agents Break Up Illegal Bris - Ellwood City Post Gazette

Agents of the Department of Naturalization conducted an early morning raid on an illegal circumcision ceremony this morning. Circumcision has been illegal under genital mutilation laws created over 40 years ago when it was declared by the Federation Council as anti-Westermen culture. Over forty people were taken into custody and the child was spared the barbaric act and taken by the Child Services Office of the Naturalization Department. Many in the Jewish community have decried these laws as an attempt at erasing Judaism from Westernesse. Officials have denied that such a thing is taking place and stating that the laws against circumcision have been on the books for almost long as the Federation has existed. Despite this Jewish people living within the Federation continue to hold these illegal ceremonies and the Department of Naturalization has made it a priority to stop genital mutilation of all kinds. Spokesperson James Miller of the Department of Naturalization had this to say about the raid and the campaign against circumcision:

"We arrested forty two people for participating in this barbaric practice. Custody of the child has been taken from the parents and the child shall be put into a foster home were he will be safe from his irresponsible family and receive the appropriate care needed by our world class foster system. The Department of Naturalization is determined to end genital mutilation in the Federation of Westernesse. When the Federation was founded our primary goal was to create a nation were all men and women are created equal, where all religions can be practiced as long as they are in the confines of being a Westerman. Circumcision is not compatible with our culture and when we do not stay within the confines of our cultural guidelines we create an atmosphere of inequality. Rest assured this child will be given a better life as a result of this raid and our unwavering commitment to bring liberty and equality to all."

Participants in the illegal ceremony are being held at the Ellwood County Prison, bond for the parents and the rabbi has been set at one million silver dollars each while bond for the other attendees has been set at thirty thousand silver dollars.

We hope and trust that the great Federation does not intend to eradicate our people from Westernesse. While we have long been critical of the legislation suppressing the expression of our ancient religious customs, a criticism which I will repeat at this opportunity, we have firmly believed that there is an uneasy accord between the Federal government and our people. It would be a great disappointment and blemish on the reputation of the Federation should the world have erred in this assessment, a disappointment which we do not believe will come to pass for even a moment.

FEDERATION OF WESTERNESSE DEPARTMENT OF STATE

President Goldbaum,

We assure you and the WZC that the Department of Naturalization is not in the business of eradicating ethnic groups or destroying cultures. The mission of that department is to harmonize the many peoples that immigrate to our great Federation with those already living within it. Our mission so far has been a success, we have kept ethnic strife to a minimum and have adopted, were applicable and appropriate, new ways of thinking to teach all Westermen. The Federation has banned all types of genital mutilation due to the medically unnecessary nature of the procedure. This does not mean however that jews in Westernesse cannot be circumcised, simply that that the procedure cannot be performed here. Those Federation citizens that have the procedure done somewhere outside our borders will not be punished when they return home. We hope that this will assauge your worries over these recent arrests and the nature of naturalization in the Federation. We hope to work closely with your organization to remove any misconceptions and to help us better understand those of the Jewish faith.

Tarusa Stops Up Pipeline to Ostmark - Charleori Tribune Review

The Tarusan government has ordered it's state owned gas company to suspend gas shipments to Ostmark through the pipeline between the two countries. The Federation government has strongly condemned the cruel action, as stopping gas shipments during the winter where many will be forced to go without heat because of the Tarusan's government's issues with the interim government of Ostmark. Federation Secretary of State Denton Graves delivered the Federation's condemnation:

"This act of cruelty must be condemned by the nations of the world. The Tarusan government may have concerns over the destruction of records in the archives of Ostmark, but to condemn an entire population to freeze to death when they have cried out to the world that they want democracy is utterly barbaric. One must begin to wonder if this isn't some ploy by the Tarusan government to gain control over a weakened country. The Federation will be seeking to begin gas deliveries when possible to the people of Ostmark and we must praise our friends in @Eiffelland for their commitment to bring gas to the soon to be frozen masses yearning for democracy."

The Federation has already brought it's concerns to the Tarusan government prior to the cutoff of gas the Ostmark, however the Tsardom rebuffed these concerns claiming that the Federation was not concerned about the destruction of the Ostmark state archives. The Langley Administration so far has not made any statement about the destruction of records and the Tribune Review did ask for comment and has received it for this article:

"The Langley administration is indeed concerned about the destruction of records in Ostmark, however in the interest of facilitating the creation of a democratic state in Ostmark, we have not demanded an explanation. The Langley administration feels that continued demands over the archives will only create obstacles that will delay the advancement of democracy in Ostmark and that traditionally so called truth and reconciliation periods do nothing but create future anger by those who feel the need for revenge. The fact that Ostmark is taking these steps at all is a miracle in of itself and the Federation is willing to overlook some these issues as long as the goal of a democratic Ostmark is realized. We remind Ostmark that the Federation is watching and that should we detect that they are attempting to reverse course or pervert the path to democracy at any point during this process we will move to place new restrictions on Ostmark." - Claire Fielding, Presidential Press Secretary

Abortion Activists Protest at Vistarikan Embassy - The Capitol Record

In Charleroi, two thousand protesters appeared in front of the Vistarikan Embassy today to protest the arrest of Vistarikan women seeking abortions in the neighboring country of Bajorország. Earlier today on the social media platform Twatter, the World Reproductive Rights Foundation issued a condemnation of Vistarika and pleaded with the Bajorok government to stop legislation that would ban foreigners from getting abortions in Bajorország. The foundation also stated that it would make fund available for those foreigners seeking abortions in countries where abortion is illegal to fly to another country where it is legal to get an abortion as well as funds to lobby the legislature in Bajorország to stop the bill that would make it illegal for foreigners to get abortions in Bajorország. Protests in front of the Vistarikan embassy are scheduled for the entire week and another protest is scheduled to take place in front of the embassy of Bajorország tomorrow.

Largest Drug Bust in Federation History - Baldwin-Whitehall City News

A coalition consisting of the Regulated Drug Enforcement Agency (RDEA), Federation Shore Guard, Federation Division of Investigation (FDI) and the Baldwin-Whitehall Metropolitan Police Department (BWMPD) discovered five tons of the cocaine onboard the MV Agder owned the Nordfjord out of the nation of Austweg. The container ship Adger was met by Federation Shore Guard cutters after the FDI was tipped off that the a container had been loaded with the illicit drugs during a stop in the Commonwealth of Calva. Six crewmen were arrested and taken to the Bakers Island Detention Facility, Baldwin-Whitehall's main prison complex. The crewmen are each held on five hundred thousand credit bond.

Searching the container ship was no small feat, however with help from one of the crewmen not involved in the drug smuggling, the authorities were able to determine where exactly the drugs were located. Over five tons of cocaine were found in different containers equaling just over three hundred and twenty five million credits. So far this takes the record for the largest bust in Federation history. The amount of drugs flowing into the Federation has increased over the years, with cocaine and meth amphetamines making up most of the incoming drugs entering the country annually, experts say. Calva and Tiwanaku make up the largest exporters of illicit drugs to the Federation.

With more and more drugs flowing into the Federation every year, the Langley Administration has been forced to take further steps to stem the flow of illicit drugs entering the country. However agents in the various agencies that have been tasked with finding the drugs and where they come from. The Port Authority of Baldwin-Whitehall reported that the port received one hundred and ninety five million metric revenue tons (MMRT) in 2020 alone and that number is expected to increase as the years go on and demand for consumer goods continues to climb in the Federation. Federation agencies face an impossible task just in this one port alone, meaning drug smugglers will continue to have the advantage until a new technology or search method comes along.

The MV Agder has been impounded on a fifty million credit bond. No further announcements have been made about the bust.

PUBLISHED BY THE

UTENRIKSMINISTER
KONGERIKET ØSTVEG

FROM ULRIKKE THORA GULBRANDSEN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS,

TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE SECERTARY OF STATE FOR THE FEDERATION OF WESTERNESSE,
MY MOST HONORABLE MINISTER DENTON GRAVES,
The Kingdom of Østveg has taken notice on the case of the Austwegian company Nordfjord and their ship Agder. These accounts from the publication Baldwin-Whitehall City News respecting Agder and the recent contraband delivery come as a surprise to Nordfjord and they have asked His Majesty’s Government to make inquiries on their behalf in this extremely difficult scenario.

First, we must inquire if any imprisoned crew members are Austwegian nationals? Second, we must ask if instead the punishment should not rest of Nordfjord, and instead on the criminals directly involved. Nordfjord is willing to provide your Government a shipping manifest and has asked this humble representative to prosecute the respected shipper OR in the case of this being a private endeavor, the crew members responsible. As such, the release of Agder and any future vessels to Nordfjord in exchange for continued full cooperation in all future matters of discovered contraband on Nordfjord vessels.

Similarly, His Majesty’s Government wishes to convey full cooperation and willingness to handle any discovery of illicit behavior on Austwegian shores, if proven.

Kindly accept, My Honorable Mister Denton Graves, my continued assurance of our continued ideals for peace among democracies and our continued friendship. I stand committed as your most humble and obedient servant in faithful dialogue between your President and my Prime Minister,

DEPARTMENT OF STATE
FEDERATION OF WESTERNESSE

THIS IS A RESTRICTED COMMUNICATION

To the honorable minister Ulrikke Thora Gulbrandsen,

We must apologize for the shock brought to your government however the Federation has been under assault for several years now as the drug cartels continues to focus on increasing illegal importation of illicit drugs and materials into our country. This focus has brought our law enforcement agencies, both national and city, under a great deal of stress as they struggle to keep up with this assault of international criminal activity.

So far the investigation is ongoing, however I can personally report to you that not one of the arrested individuals are citizens of yours. Had they been we would have been in contact directly with your government about the issue. As for the Agder we are willing to forgo the bond for releasing the ship from impound. However we must continue to keep the ship in impound until a full search can be completed. This search is expected to be completed one week from today at which time the ship will be released by the city port authority back into hands of your shipping corporation. We apologize for this inconvenience and we ask that this information be kept only with trustworthy individuals at until our investigation into the ship's cargo is completed.

We would ask that Nordfjord executives and security agents examine it's security protocols and re-examine the backgrounds of employees working ships transporting cargo between south Westernesse and the Federation. These criminals were able to gain employment as crews on Nordfjord ships and were able to stow illicit cargo on to cargo containers AFTER the containers were loaded onto the ship. Had it not been for an honest crew member noticing that a containers locks had been meddled with, these drugs would now be in the hands of dealers within the Federation.

National Highway Police Deploys Drones - Charleroi Tribune Review

Prepare to see more crowded skies from next week on as the National Highway Police begins to deploy drones to monitor speeds and issue automated tickets to speeders. Highway Police plans to deploy these drones in major cities and highway junctions, while this will only cover a small amount of roadway, the drones will be deployed over a ten year period to cope with the large amounts of traffic that uses our highways every year. The drones will be capable of monitoring speeds of vehicles and operators will be able to issue tickets through FedPost.

Highway Police General Felix Bauman provided a statement on the upcoming drone deployment: "We will never be able to hire enough officers to patrol the highways, these drones will help the Highway Police close the gaps in our coverage of the Federation highway system. With our officers on the ground, static camera emplacements and our new drone system we will be able to create the safest highway system in the world. The drones will also be able to relay road conditions to maintenance crews and traffic flow coordinators, so it is not just a tool for speed limit enforcement, additionally the drones will be able to help track targets in chases along with our helicopter units.

Universal Identification Forgers Caught - Baldwin-Whitehall City News

In the North Side Flats neighborhood, four UID forgers were caught with over one thousand fake UID's. The Metropolitan Police and Federation Department of Investigation finally caught the forgers after a year long investigation that involved two hundred officers and thirty agents of the FDI. UID's are a secure identification card mandated by the Federation Council and 2006. The card is required to do things such as use public transportation, fly on airlines, vote or even do something as simple as buy alcohol.

Forging the UID requires special hardware and software issued only by the Department of National Security, five years ago a disgruntled employee sold a UID printing machine to a group of anonymous hackers and only a few years later fake UID's were found in major cities across the country. The DNS was able to determine that the UID's were fake only because the UID's were paired with illegitimate birth certificate codes. All UID's are electronically paired with a citizen's birth certificate code when they are generated.

The forgers are being held in a maximum security detention facility without bond.

Port Authority Releases Container Ship - Baldwin-Whitehall City News

The MV Agder, impounded due to it's role in the drug bust on the eighth of January has been released after the Federation Council ordered the ship to be returned to it's owner Nordfjord at the request of Nordfjord's home country of Austweg. The Port Authority did not comment on whether the fifty million credit bond was paid or not, but sources inside the Federation Council have told us that the bond was to be waived in order not to harm relations with Austwegians who had recently approached the Federation with a treaty respecting trade and Federation-Austwegian relations.

Next Phase of High Speed Rail Project to Begin - The Capitol Record

The Federation Council has voted to continue with phase two of the construction of a high speed rail network that is eventually meant to connect all major cities from the east to west coast. So far lines connecting Charleroi with Ellwood City, Baldwin-Whitehall and Tiroe City have been completed. The lines were completed five years ago by a joint venture lead by Eiffellander train manufacturer Magarus. The train, the same type as is used in @Eiffelland, is capable of speeds up to three hundred and eighty kilometers per hour and can travel between Baldwin-Whitehall and Charleroi in two and a half hours.

Currently the rail network terminates in Tiroe City; Phase Two of the project is meant to connect several cities in the lake regions of the Federation and finally phase three is to extend the network out into the western coast and the Arrowhead Peninsula. Phase One took ten years to complete due to court battles over land rights, but Federation officials say that should not be the case with Phase Two as much of the land out west is owned by the government coupled with changes in land rights passed by the Federation Council a few years ago that strengthened the government's eminent domain land expropriation laws. Representatives of the Federation Council have informed us that Magarus will once again be the primary contractor for Phase Two of the project.

It was a pleasure to us to cooperate with the government of The Federation in constructing the high-speed rail lines between Charleroi, Ellwood City, Baldwin-Whitehall and Tiroe City, and to make it possible to reduce the travel times between these cities so dramaticly. We look forward to developing Phase Two of the High Speed Rail Project; our experience with high-speed rail solutions in general and our gained experience with the physical geographic circumstances in The Federation will help us to deliver the quality needed for a fast and safe high-speed rail network.

Reproductive Rights Activists March in Charleroi - Charleroi Tribune Review

More than a million women marched through the streets of the capital to protest the assault on what they call "a global assault on reproductive rights" and for the shooting death of a Zaran woman named Francesca Zaccagni in Bajorország. The march started at the Capitol building and continued down Corrigan Drive before turning onto Embassy Avenue and ending in front of the Bajoran and Vistarikan embassies. Security at the embassies was put on high alert as protestors grabbed at the fences and climbed onto nearby street lights to throw objects at fleeing embassy staff and their security detail. The embassy gates were never breached however and Capitol and Charleroi police officers, after making their way through a throng of protestors were able to remove fence and light post climbers and return the protest to a more peaceful standing. No arrests were made.

The protest was organized by the World Reproductive Rights Foundation, headquartered in Charleroi, the Westernesse Civil Liberties Union and the Women's Rights Organization. Dubbed the Million Woman March, WRRF President Stephanie Prescott gave a statement to the Tribune Review about the ongoing events in Bajorország and Vistarika:

"What is happening in the nations of the old world is a crime against humanity. Women continue to be oppressed by the religious nuts in Vistarika and in Bajorország. This march is for Hanna Linklater who killed herself after being shamed and pressured by the fundamentalist crazies that surrounded her. This march is for the second of the woman arrested in Metinna that the Vistarikan press could not even be bothered to name when reporting her suicide. This March is for Francesca Zaccagni who, using her human right to protest, was mercilessly gunned down by Bajoran authorities. These injustices must not be allowed to go on, we call upon the free nations of the world to condemn these nations for murder, for false imprisonment, and most importantly for the denial of the right to be master over our bodies. Women of the world fight back!"

More marches are planned with a march being planned with women's and feminist organizations in Bajorország on the Bajoran legislative building scheduled for next week.

The Serbovian government expresses its concern over the assaults against diplomatic representations in the Federation that have been carried out by what clearly are militant extremist elements. However, we are confident that the duties of the relevant international conventions will be appropriately met by the Federation authorities and such instances of banditry will be prevented in the future.

Federation President Suspends Ship Trials - Charleroi Tribune Review

Citing current unrest and mistreatment of citizens, President Langely ordered the suspensions of trials of the Bremerton class destroyer with the Pannonian navy.

"We cannot in good faith allow these trials to go on until we see a turn around in the policies of Bajoria. I will not allow myself to be the President that allowed the sale of military weapons to a government and it's politicians who do not share the values of the Federation. The comments made by high profile politicians, by the prime minister are very worrying as is the unrest that has followed the abortion ban. Another worry is the clear lack of security among the armed forces of Bajoria. To allow their military weapons to get into the hands to terrorists and ultimately allowing those weapons to be used on Bajoran citizens is quite disturbing."

The CEO of the Baldwin Shipbuilding Corporation, Zachary Roberts was not surprised by the suspension:

"Following the buildup of tensions in Bajoria, we were expecting a suspension of the project. We had hoped it would not come to that, but unfortunately it has. The Pannonian contract would have allowed for further expansion of our company; we were prepared to hire on many more technicians for the contract, currently all that is in limbo until the government decides to either continue the project or cancel it outright. Luckily our contracts with the Federation Navy will more than cushion the blow should we lose the contract."

Baldwin Shipbuilding Corporation stock was down several percentage points after the announcement of the suspension. Currently the Federation government and BSC are negotiating paths toward continuing the project.

The suspension of the project has helped throw the Pannonian government into disarray in a time when unrest is already at an all time high, leading to the resignation of the government. How the creation of a new government pans out in Bajorország will certainly have an affect on if the Federation government allows the project to continue. It is rumored that the President favors the center left socialists over the far right politicians who have dominated the news cycle in Bajorország.

WRRF President Prescott Steps Down (Opinion) - Baldwin-Whitehall Gazette

Stephanie Prescott has lead the Women's Reproductive Rights Foundation for five years, but her time as leader has come to end. Prescott's right had woman and able lieutenant Rebecca Abelman has taken the leadership role. The foundation posted on their twatter account that Prescott was taking time off for health reasons, however it is clear that Prescott's comments and sudden infamy were the major reason for the shakeup in leadership. With Serbovia threatening to put Prescott on a terror watch list and other governments commenting on her supportive comments of the 24M revolutionary group, Prescott's leadership was becoming a hindrance to the WRRF.

The announcement of Abelman taking the reigns of the WRRF was followed by a thirty million credit donation from high profile philanthropist and ex software developer turned business magnate Kenneth Montgomery. Montgomery, now retired, was the founder of Sunray Software Corporation, the largest software development company in Westernesse and creator of the Sunray operating system widely used in computers across the planet. It's no surprise that Montgomery would take sudden interest in the WRRF, Abelman was head of the human resources division at Sunray Software and reportedly was handpicked for the position by Montgomery, the two have a long working history with each other.

More interestingly Montgomery sits on the advisory board at Trans-Westernesse Airlines, which owns Balert Airlines in Bajorország, it is possible that Montgomery will use his influence within the company to make huge donations to the socialists in Bajorország which could spell trouble for embattled rightists such as Zoltan Kovacs.

On the Docket: Nuclear Proliferation - The Capitol Record

C.R. 125, a bill recently introduced by the Council Nuclear Defense Caucus has created much controversy within the Federation Council over the modernization of the nuclear forces of the Federation. The bill calls for a total of one trillion credits to be spent over the next thirty years in upgrades to the nuclear triad. Many in the council argue that modernization is unneeded while others argue that the cornerstone of the Federation's defenses is it's nuclear arsenal. The Federation's nuclear arsenal, while no secret to the rest of the world, is not spoken of much in the halls of government ever since the horrors of nuclear war were visited upon the cities of West March during their devastating civil war. While Marchers suffered through their post atomic horrors, the rest of the world railed against nuclear weapons, preached disarmament and the end of the nuclear era. While some countries talked about reducing their nuclear weapons, others followed through; however in the Federation stockpiles were quietly increased. The weapons bought then were of older designs from the 70's and 80's, still quite capable and deadly, but in the era of 21st century high technology, new is always better. The magnetic hard disks and floppy drives that hold the Federation's land based missile system together just isn't cutting it in the eyes of many government officials as well as military generals. The missiles themselves are also due for an upgrade, the Nuclear Defense Caucus wants hyper accurate missiles that fly faster and farther and new warheads to sit atop them.

At the heart of the upgrade plans is the LGM-151 Apollo, a MIRV (Multiple Independently targetable Re-entry Vehicle) capable intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile stands ready to be adopted, some say it may even be outdated as it was designed in the late 90's, despite that, it is the newest missile the Federation is capable of producing now without going through another lengthy design process. The problem is it hasn't been tested outside of computer simulations and for many council members to be on board a test is needed before money is approved for modernization. ICBM testing has been a taboo subject for previous administrations and a test of the new warhead that would sit atop Apollo's new bow is out of the question as nuclear testing has been banned by European Forum treaties governing nuclear weapons. So all that leaves is the missile and the re-entry vehicle and in the current climate brewing in the old world a missile test right now, in the opinion of some military analysts, is asking too much. President Langley thinks otherwise, military modernization was a top priority in his last campaign and whispers within the halls of government say a test from the testing silo's McKay Air Force Base to the test ranges in the atolls around Polytopika is being planned.

edit: until OOC nuke policy is decided, disregard this post.
