** INDICATES IT IS TIME FOR THE MORNING NEWS BROADCAST**

"Beginning with lighter fare: the National Cat Fanciers' Association has named its first-ever tuxedo cat as best in show. The black and white Oesgál Shorthair, affectionately named Adelmar o Cabeludo, reportedly stole the hearts of the judging committee with his common uniform yet calm disposition. Adelmar o Cabeludo is not expected to experience the same reception at the international level, even among his breed, however, Association Commissioner insisted that quote: 'Adelmar embodied the spirit of this show, at least, at its place and time.'"

"Remaining in the animal kingdom: Green Democrats in parliament remain committed to domestic fishing quotas in Oesgália. Informed by data from marine biologists, Greens argue that Oesgál consumption and export of fish products sets the region's aquatic biodiversity towards certain collapse. Private and small boat fishermen complain that the proposed regulations would favor larger fishing cartels who pose to dominate lottery quotas and skirt inspection thanks to their sheer scale. The Democratic Party (separate from Green Democrats), meanwhile continue to insist that the Kingdom of Oesgália would only undercut itself in the short term if neighboring countries do not likewise commit to responsible quotas."

"Finally, before we break for our sponsors, we go to our correspondent Ruy Bento in the countryside . . ."

"Was this the burial site of a Hvidish Jarl? Archaeologists in tandem from the King's College (Oesgália) and Ribe University out of Hvidland say it is so. Complicated further, they believe the male Hvidish bones and items lay beside a female with significantly different traces of DNA. The history of this island is likewise complicated, we are reminded, and here perhaps for the first time we are witnessing Oesgálian researchers being open to outside inquiry. This land today belongs to the family farmers' Valente, who for three generations discovered and held on to relics found here that domestic historians made an effort to ignore. Will this openness to Hvidland's researchers extend to a contemporary diplomatic rekindling, Rosá?"

*CAMERAS RETURN TO ROSÁ FREIRE*

"If the spirit wills it, surely, thank you Ruy . . ."

"Good morning, and well, let's see if this strikes a memory: 'You were a bird that never learned to fly, I was a boy who was always too shy'. The Whalers? Of course, if you've scanned through radiowaves on these islands over the last six decades you have surely heard the voice of Joel Luz and the guitar of Raymundo de Sá, the surviving members of the international pop group known as, again, The Whalers.

"We remember the tragic death of drummer Vincente Roque five years ago of lung cancer, and the eternal mystery which is the missing boat cruise of lead vocalist Aleixo Robo and bass guitarist Flavio Freire. It is their mysterious disappearance in 1983, perhaps, that thrusts The Whalers forward into history as an enigma beside the other passengers. Though the fated band had already split by 1974, it was Joel and Raymundo who had inspired the schism by forming their own duo as the "Fisher Dukes."

"The Fisher Dukes never achieved the same international success of The Whalers, and the reprising rights to that original success have carried them and the inheritors of their bandmate's band into the new century. So we have to ask why, and it is okay to be cynical as a Gálivisão, why do these two band-breakers return all of these decades later to represent the original thing?"

"To take them at their word, quote: 'We will reprise a generation of love and understanding beside a rotating cast of native musicians'. Indeed, this rotating cast includes touchdown tours with corresponding international "tribute bands" such as the San Jose "Whalauders" as a play on Marauders, the Engellexian "Sperm Whale Bangers" as a play on the popular sausage dish, and the decades-old Tarusan tribute known as Pop-Kit or "
Поп-кит", as a play on pop-whale.

"This is a piece of past music that draws upon the familiar, but if I could invite my own interpretation: I appreciate that the surviving members of The Whalers invite foreign interpretations and trends to their music. Music, film, and the writing of an era is an expression of that place and time - but through this tour, and its recordings, perhaps we as Oesgáls will learn what that meant to our peers around the world."

"Whether that will, or it can be, I will let that thought be and turn it back to the morning sponsors of Gálivisão."

**THE RINGS AT 2300 USHERING IN THE WEEKEND EVENING BROADCAST**
*79 YEAR OLD CASIMIR FIDALGO SITS IN A SOFA CHAIR WITH THE OCCASIONAL BUS OR SCOOTER PASSING OUTSIDE*

"Good night sons, good night daughters, and greetings kindred spirits both live and tuning in from that somewhere beyond . . ."

*CASIMIR LOOKS SIDE TO SIDE AT THE CARVED POTATOES AND SQUASH SURROUNDING HIM WITH A SMILE*

"Would you lend a prayer for those stuck between tonight? Oh, well, most of you should be asleep by now and they are after all used to waiting . . ."

"Are you still there? Good, then let's get to the evening news!"

"King Adelmar the Fourth has returned to Oesgàlia after a lengthy holiday away. Where did he go? No one knows, but we are glad to see him back even in what the Velhos Vindicator calls a 'sorrowful state'. He presents better than our potato visage beside me, and I mean that slightly, but I do not judge that chosen son for mourning his wife's murder as he chooses. I only beg the idiot police, curse their badges, determine and punish the culprit after this almost year of waiting!"

"I lend my prayer to Queen Soraia who graced us for a fortnight before her slaying. For whom did you pray dear viewer?"

*TEXT FOR THE NEXT STORY IS SPLASHED ACROSS THE SCREEN BUT CASIMIR FIDALGO WAVES IT AWAY UNTIL THE THIRD BIT WITH A DONATION BEG IS SHOWN*

"Late night television is public access material. It is made possible by small church donations and viewers who participate; I do not read ads here, and traditional Oesgàlian music lives on this station every night . . . If you want it to live forever, I'm sorry, but you need to participate! Don't donate, participate! Start a conversation with your neighbor about public discourse - if they bite, and some of them do, please just send the medical bills to me! Okay?"

"Can we have our first coffee now? Good. The Oesgálian Navy is fully docked at port, the Air Patrol is grounded, and both the Army and Legion have announced a stand down in recognition of the upcoming spiritual bridge we call Departure Day. And call me a ghoul but I ask you to lock your doors and call your daughters when these young goblins are running in the streets on these nights!"

**THE RINGS AT 2300 USHERING IN A WEEKDAY EVENING BROADCAST**
*80-YEAR-OLD CASIMIR FIDALGO SITS DOWN NEXT TO A YOUNG MAN AND WOMAN ON A LARGE SOFA*

FIDALGO:
"I am neither too old, nor are my guests too young for public television - so please chew on that station directors, and choke! Okay? My guests are the creators of a prospective animated program called Familiar, and after watching their pilot episode I am enraged! Their names are Kevin Nascimento and Marina Lobo, and I want to know why they need to be here instead of on primetime?!"

*NASCIMENTO & LOBO CHOKE BACK LAUGHTER WITH EYES MET BEFORE LOBO OFFERS A RESPONSE*

LOBO:
"Kevin and I met in basic training two years ago as conscripts for the Oesgàlian Coast Guard. He was caught doodling when we were cleaning a ship and we were all punished while the training officers asked him to draw the scene."

"Everyone wanted him dead. I wanted to see what he was drawing, you see, I am an artist as well."

NASCIMENTO: "I had made a rough sketch of an instructor, Petty Officer Rosàrio, on a surfboard shouting at dolphins for diving incorrectly. It wasn't until after we graduated that Rosàrio asked for me to draw it again, but what she didn't know was that Marina and I had already imagined a caricature of her whole life."

LOBO: "In our 12 intensive weeks being shouted at and lectured by Rosàrio she had revealed a lot about herself, and I do not think she realized it until we showed her. Sometimes when we correct others we reveal our history of mistakes, revisions, or wishes. She is this tough domineering lady who wants to be exemplary, but she has regrets about her past."

NASCIMENTO: "That is what Familiar is about: how do we fit into this cultural cross-stitch when we know the whole embroidery of our life is not what we intended or what society expects of us?"

*ANIMATIONS FROM PILOT EPISODE SHOWING THE CHARACTER FAMILY ARE SHOWN*

FIDALGO:
"I laughed and I cried in the span of a fifteen-minute episode. Familiar animates a career military woman training irreverent youths while raising her own two children. Meanwhile, the father of her children has been medically discharged from the military and seems to be struggling to find his place in both society and his family. Are these characters still together?"

LOBO: "As Oesgàlians we are culturally expected to stick together for decades as couples and for centuries as families. Different variables exist for coupling today, and I think that if our series is picked up we can explore what together means for them."

FIDALGO: "I do not think Oesgàl media has produced a film or television series quite like Familiar before. We have discussed the mother, the father, and mentioned the children, but as I peered in I sensed that this program is also familiar with an Oesgàlian port town and dynamics with mountain villages beyond."

NASCIMENTO: "I am from such a village, whereas Marina is from a port city, and we really want to compare and contrast the small and large differences. Most are actually small, but it's a certain stubbornness from our upbringing that makes these things both comedic and challenging."

FIDALGO: "Your program may not be picked up here domestically, and I am sorry for that. Public television simply does not have the resources, sadly, but I hope this little evening platform can share a glimpse to Oesophiles internationally who also get these broadcasts for free what you two are capable of."
