Colonel Tesseire looked at the young officer in front of him. The young officer had been suspended from office about a month ago, after he had been caught sleeping with a man. A major faux pas in the Eiffellandian armed forces. The army regulations regarding homosexual intercourse suffered from the same flaw as the law regarding it, so officially there was nothing to take action on, but de facto the position of a homosexual soldier, especially a homosexual officer, would be rendered impossible after their homosexuality had been discovered. This also applied to Karl Erbprinz von Weidenbach. The fact that he was the son and heir of one of Eiffelland’s princely families didn’t change his situation.

“Leutnant von Weidenbach, this … incident has rendered your position impossible. We both know how it goes from now on: You have lost your authority over the enlisted men, and destroyed the confidence the officers had in you,” Tesseire said in his German with French accent. “Officially, we cannot fire you, but your career in the armed forces is over.”

Karl von Weidenbach was aware of his position. He was 26 years old, and as the son and heir of a princely family, everybody knew his name. And knew that he was homosexual. Indeed, his career in the armed forces was over, but chances were small that he could build up a career in the civilian world.

“You will be transferred to Kasbah-Ben-Salih, Al-Magrab. Together with another lieutenant, you will be responsible for maintaining law and order, as well as take up administrative tasks. That is the only thing I can do for you. It is this … or resign,” Tesseire said, while shifting the papers to Karl.

Karl signed.

“See it as an opportunity for a restart,” Tesseire said. “The boat will sail from Bremen on the 28th. You have two weeks to pack, say goodbye to family and friends and do the official arrangements.”
