"A Serbovia of values" - Andelic announces plans to run for Presidency

Prime Minister Dejan Andelic has announced his plans to run as a candidate of the ruling Party of National Renewal in the forthcoming presidential election of July 2021. Next year marks the end of President Radovan Nedic's second term, which will also be his last due to the constitutional two-term limit. The candidacy will still undergo a vote by the PNR's executive committee which is due to meet in two weeks, but Andelic's candidacy is a near-certainty as no alternate candidates have presented themselves and the Prime Minister seems to have the universal support of the party's executive leadership.

The Prime Minister has announced that he will campaign under the slogan A Serbovia of values, promising to give emphasis to the traditional Christian values that the Nedic-Andelic administration has already championed during its current tenure. Furthermore, Andelic went on to promise a more involved foreign policy, aiming to strenghten Serbovia's position in the regional stage through cooperation with Serbovia's neighbors.

Prime Minister Andelic is the second candidate named to the forthcoming presidential elections. The opposition Socialist Party has named its head, congresswoman Jana Bukeljovic as their presidential candidate. A Liberal-Agrarian coalition is rumored to be fielding a joint candidate with the possible backing of some minority parties, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Gang war in Moskopolje continues, businessman gunned down in broad daylight

In what authorities describe as the nineteenth gang shooting that has taken place this year between Moskopolje's organized crime syndicates, local businessman Maxim Petrovic and his two bodyguards were gunned down at their table in a local restaurant on a busy friday evening. Four masked assailants armed with assault rifles walked inside the restaurant in broad daylight and emptied their magazines at the victims, who were all pronounced dead at the scene when the emergency services arrived. A car apparently used by the killers was later found burned in the outskirts of the city.

According to the Moskopolje Police, Petrovic had strong ties with the Dragovic crime family, which has been at war with the rival Zelic family since August. 36 organized crime members and associates and eight civilians have been killed so far in the conflict. The two of Moskopolje's leading organized crime syndicates are said to be engaging in a struggle over the smuggling routes in the region, which contains Serbovia's largest commercial port. The Port of Moskopolje is believed to be a major entryway of drugs, other illicit materials and even people from international eastern and southern smuggling routes.

Immediately after the shooting, Moskopolje's mayor Milan Stanic demanded progress from the law enforcement in finding the culprits of this year's mob killings. Mayor Stanic said that the situation was a severe threat to public safety in the city, and criticized both his own police department and the Federal authorities oiver their response to the ongoing feud.

The Moskopolje Police is investigating the incident in collaboration with the Federal Directorate of Investigation.

Retaliation breaks box office records on release weekend

The newest release of Serbovia's famed action star Stanko Nesic has made box office records since its anticipated theatre premiere on Friday. Retaliation is now available in movie theatres throughout the country, and the production company is said to be in talks over the international distribution of the movie.

NRK 2 TV's resident film critic Milan Blagojevic gave the film four stars out of five in his review. "The revenge plot of the movie is something that has been seen time and time again in the action genre, especially in the Westernessen films that most of Nesic's movies have sought to emulate", Blagojevic wrote in an online review, "However, the high-octane gunplay and visceral martial arts scenes combined set within a dark and beautiful rendition of Petrovgrad's underbelly make the film an amazing visual experience, and an instant action classic".

Blagojevic also pointed out that Nesic, a veteran actor of 53 years and a well-known martial arts enthusiast, was again adamant that he'd perform his fights and stunts himself without the aid of professional stuntmen, saying that it was "commitment worthy of respect".

The film follows Franjo Zamak, a retired officer of the Serbovian Special Forces and a veteran of the Thrakian Civil War, who sets upon a campaign of vigilantism against Petrovgrad's gangs and organized crime families after his wife is killed by a stray bullet during a shootout between rival drug dealers. He ends up being hunted by both mob hitmen and corrupt cops as well as honest policemen attempting to bring him in for his murder spree. In addition to Nesic, the movie includes several other prominent Serbovian actors in supporting roles.

While both professional and audience reviews have been overly positive, some commentators have criticized the film for its high amount of violence and what some media watchdogs have called "promotion of vigilante justice". Still, "Retaliation" is already set to become the most popular film release of this winter, and there are already rumors of both a sequel film and a possible spin-off TV series that would follow Zamak's story.

Elbaron - Arts & Culture Committee

The Arts and Culture Committee is interested in screening a French subbed version of Retaliation in cooperation with the Serbovian embassy, to further expose our people to the wonderful cultures of our northern neighbors, and to give the people of Elbaron creative input on how to solve ethnic tensions in their own country. While every conflict is of course complex and unique in its own ways, there are universal lessons to be learned and applied to other conflicts as well.

News in brief

PETROVGRAD - Christmas sales are at full swing throughout the country, and retailers are again projected to have a strong sales season as Serbovians by their Christmas presents and food and drink for various festivities celebrated with family and other loved ones. According to the Serbovian Association of Retailers, the two weeks preceding Christmas are traditionally the busiest period of the year both in conventional and online retailing and most retail chains employ large numbers of additional staff during this period. In addition, domestic travel is expected to surge during the Christmas week, as many travel to other parts of the country to visit relatives and others visit various domestic resorts during the festive period.

Prominent religious leaders from both the Tiburan Catholic and Orthodox churches have continued to criticize what they call excess consumerism associated with the modern Christmas festivities. In a joint statement, leading archbishops and metropolitans from both churches urged citizens to take heed of the spiritual message of Christmas, criticizing the growth in social inequality that has taken place during the last two decades.

MOSKOPOLJE - Federal authorities are taking a newly renewed role in efforts to end the ongoing war between the East Coast's two leading organized crime syndicates, both headquartered in the port city of Moskopolje. The Federal Directorate of Investigation announced on yesterday that it was taking control of anti-mafia operations in the Greater Moskopolje area owing to the local police forces' inefficiency in ending the conflict between the Dragovic and Zelic syndicates. The ongoing gang war has led to fifty fatalities in the city since August. The intervention of the FDI is being carried out in concert with the Federal Police, which is sending uniformed personnel from its Special Mobile Units to conduct high-visibility patrols in areas of the city that have been affected by mob violence.

Indeed, yesterday's announcement was followed by a series of dawn raids targeting properties and businesses associated with the Dragovic and Zelic syndicates not only in the Greater Moskopolje area, but also in the cities of Drazevo, Rečno Ostrvo and Smrekova Brda. The raids resulted in thirty arrests of members and associates from both mafia syndicates. The FDI said that significant amounts of presumably illicit money and drugs were confiscated, as well as 70 firearms including high-powered automatic rifles and submachine guns. The raids are the first major arrests of mobsters involved in the coastal gang war, and the FDI has promised a shift end to the violence that has plagued Moskopolje for much of the winter.

Real estate heir goes on a cocaine-fueled road rampage through Petrovgrad, fights policemen

Matija Urosevic, one of Petrovgrad's most controversial public figures and a heir to the multi-billion Urosevic Group, is again embroiled in a scandal after leading Petrovgrad police forces in a high-speed pursuit through the city's network of ringways. The Greater Petrovgrad Metropolitan Police announced today that the 29-year old socialite had been arrested for numerous charges including multiple counts of serious endangering of traffic safety, resisting arrest and possession of a narcotic substance with intent of use.

According to police sources, a traffic patrol of the GPMP caught Urosevic driving the Petrovgrad Center Ringway with his Eiffellander-made Borschel 996 sports car going at a speed of 170km/h, seventy kilometers in excess of the speed limit along most of the Center Ringway. When the police signalled for him to stop, Urosevic refused, leading fifteen police patrol units and a surveillance helicopter on a high-speed pursuit through a ten-kilometer stretch of Central Petrovgrad before being stopped by a spike strip.

After crashing his Borschel into a storefront in the Crvena Planina district, Urosevic behaved aggressively towards the police officers and had to be taken down and handcuffed by police. He was treated for injuries in the Sveti Agata Hospital and then remanded into the custody of the Metropolitan Police, where he currently remains. Police sources say that Urosevic was under the influence of cocaine at the time of the incident. He is due to be officially charged and could face prison time.

This is not the first time that Urosevic, a heir to Serbovia's second-largest real estate conglomerate, has stirred controversy with his antics. In 2016, Urosevic was arrested for assault and battery after a fight broke out in the VIP room of Club 29, one of Petrovgrad's most exclusive night clubs. The incident was then settled out of court, with the victim supposedly receiving extensive compensation. Rumors say that previous incidents where the playboy heir has been caught driving drunk or in possession of narcotics have been covered up thanks to his family's connections with the city administration.

This time it seems that Matija Urosevic will have to face punishment over his actions thanks to the wide publicity received by the incident. Videos recorded of the chase and his arrest are trending on Serbovian social media and many high-visibility influencers have stepped forward to condemn his behavior.

A spokesman of the Urosevic family declined to comment on the incident.

This incident emphasizes the need for responsible coca production from professional sources - the recently established Coca Authority here in Calva being one such professional source. Illegal, low-grade substances distributed by international crime syndicates and their purchase are highly associated with generally defunct and anti-social lifestyles.

Federal State of Serbovia

The Serbovian government strongly objects to the fact that the Commonwealth of Calva is seemingly attempting to take advantage of an isolated judicial incident that has occurred in our country, in order to drive their own political agendas in favor of the narcotics industry on the international stage.

Such behavior does not conform to the established rules of good and polite diplomacy, and should be avoided in the future in the interests of preserving good Calvan-Serbovian relations.

Attempts of foreign interference in internal politics of the Serbovian state will not be tolerated.

News in brief

PETROVGRAD/PANNONIA - The Serbovia-based Drazevo Shipbuilding Corporation is among the main participants of an international bidding contest to supply new vessels for the modernizing Pannonian Navy. Our northern neighbor is acquiring new destroyer, frigate and submarine classes in what analysts are describing as one of the largest military programs in that country in the recent decades. Though the Westernessen Bremerton-class destroyer looks to be the likeliest destroyer acquisition in the contest, DSC propositions are to be trialled by the Pannonians for the new frigates and submarines respectively.

Drazevo has submitted the export versions of the Branilac class frigate and the Ajkula class submarine, both originally developed to meet the needs of the Serbovian Navy. At the moment, the Branilac class is competing with a Tarusan frigate design, but the Ajkula class is considered to be a likely acquisition by the Pannonians as no other submarine models have been entered into the contest. Ministry of Defense officials were excited over the bidding contest, saying that it served as a good opportunity to demonstrate Serbovian naval industries on the global stage.

NORTH THRAKIA - North Thrakians have celebrated the opening of the Veliko Tarnovgrad Regional Hospital, the single largest construction project initiated by the North Thrakia Provisional Authority over the last decade. The new main hospital of North Thrakia's regional capital will provide hospital services for nearly a half of the capital's 450000 residents, and will include specialized intensive-care, cancer treatment and surgical units which will provide specialized services for people from other parts of the North Thrakian region. A celebratory opening gala yesterday was attended by noteworthy VIP guests including the territory's head of government Matey Todorov.

The new regional hospital replaces facilities from three separate hospitals in the Veliko Tarnovgrad area, which in turn will be removed from use as heavily outdated. The new regional hospital is described as the most modern medical facility in entire North Thrakia. Its construction is a joint project of the Provisional Authority and the North Thrakia Development Fund, a fund maintained by the Serbovian government for the purposes of investing in North Thrakian businesses and in turn using the profits for various social programs in North Thrakia.

At no point have official authorities of the Commonwealth have made purchasing recommendations in relation to events in Serbovia. We were merely commenting on a known international problem from a national Calvan perspective. The Commonwealth embassy is available for any further inquiries regarding this matter. Visitors to the embassy will also be able to receive accurate information about the Calvan economy and its export offerings during a visit to the embassy.

News in brief

PETROVGRAD/GRADAC - Campaigning for this July's Presidential elections is gearing up with the joint announcement made by the Serbovian Liberal Party and the National Agrarian Party that they'll be placing Adam Jovanovic as their joint Presidential candidate. The 46-year old Jovanovic is currently serving as the Prime Minister of the constituent republic of Veliki Gradac, and is a prominent long-time activist of the Liberal Party. Incumbent President Radovan Nedic is set to retire at the end of this term, and his Party of National Renewal is placing the current Prime Minister Dejan Andelic as its candidate for the Presidency.

The Socialists, on the other hand, have placed their chairwoman Jana Bukeljovic as their candidate. The remaining nationally represented parties are unlikely to be fielding candidates of their own, but instead will probably back one of the three main candidates, with the probable exception of the communist-leaning Democratic Workers' Party and the ultranationalist Legion of St. Peter. Jovanovic is expected to announce his election platform soon. He will likely campaign on a platform of civil rights and administrative regionalism.

JEGRA/EGER - Friends and loved ones of the victims of the infamous Butcher of Severia may finally leave their past behind them following today's execution of one of the most infamous serial killers in recent Serbovian history. The 47-year old Gergely Paulik, responsible for twelve murders of young women in the Republic of Severia between 2004 and 2015, was shot today in Eger Federal Prison by a firing squad. The Federal Supreme Court rejected Paulik's final appeal against the execution last week, ending a legal process which has been ongoing since Paulik was arrested by the Federal Directorate of Investigation in 2017.

Several hundred anti-death penalty protesters were present outside of the prison during the execution, exchanging heated words with counter-demonstrators who included relatives of some of the victims murdered by Paulik during his eleven-year reign of terror. The event marks the first execution carried out by the Serbovian judiciary this year. In total, sixteen people - all murderers - are currently in death row in Serbovian prisons.

Martial artists take over Santovo for the Winter Samor Festival

Thousands of practicioners of samor, a system of hybrid combatives commonly called Serbovia's national martial art, are visiting the North Serbovian city of Santovo to take part in the worldwide second-largest event of the sport. The interior facilities of the Santovo Sports Park will host various events related to the sport over the week, including training seminars as well as the World Championship of Sports Samor.

Samor, abbreviated from the Serbovic term samoodbrana bez oružja or self-defense without weapons, was originally developed in the 1960s under the Social-Nationalist regime as an unarmed combat system of the Serbovian military and later introduced to the Serbovian population as a self-defense system. The system combines various grappling and striking techniques and draws from Serbovia's own tradition of folk wrestling and boxing, as well as various foreign martial arts. Samor has been described as one of the most effective martial arts systems in the entire world, and since the 1990s it has spread to several foreign countries, even though most of the system's practicioners are Serbovians.

The sport is governed by the International Samor Association, headquartered in Petrovgrad, and divided into military, law enforcement, self-defense and sporting subsystems which each have their own special characteristics.

The ongoing World Championship held as the main attraction of the Winter Samor Festival feature separate men and women's series which in turn are divided into seven different weight classes. Lower national competitions also feature divisions based on belt gradings, but only black and brown belts are eligible to take part in the qualification contests that will eventually lead to the World Championships event.

Several dignitaries, including President Radovan Nedic and Chief of the Armed Forces Marshal Milan Stankovic were present during the opening ceremonies held today inside the Santovo Ice Palace. The Winter Samor Festival is heavily sponsored by the Serbovian Armed Forces, even though samor itself is today an international system and popular among non-military martial arts enthusiasts.

Authorities follow up with arrests after Monday's University of Petrovgrad rioting

At least twenty men and women affiliated with the ultranationalist Serbovian Youth Vanguard, the official youth wing of the Legion of St. Peter, have been arrested today by Federal authorities for their role in Monday's events at the Central University of Petrovgrad. A group of approximately two hundred ultranationalists interrupted a lecture on Serbovian Kurkic history, vandalizing the CUP's Faculty of History building and forcing Professor Dimitar Zivkovic and his audience to vacate the premises in terror.

Following the incident, Interior Minister Matey Ivanovic announced that the events would be considered an act of violent political extremism, and ordered the Federal Directorate of Internal Security (FDUB) to conduct an investigation. The FDUB, working together with the Petrovgrad Police, has reviewed CCTV tapes and cell phone recordings of the rioting, resulting in the identification and arrest of twenty participants who will face charges for rioting, destruction of public property and resisting a law enforcement officer. Eyewitnesses and others who might have information about the identities of other rioters are being urged to come forward to the authorities.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that several high-profile members of the Legion of St. Peter are among those arrested. One of the arrestees is said to be Jovan Milutinovic, a 28-year old member of the Greater Petrovgrad Council and a deputy chairman of the Serbovian Youth Vanguard. Milutinovic was reportedly arrested by FDUB agents at his workplace today, and is being held in investigative custody. Most of the eighteen rioters arrested on Monday by the riot police have already been released and will be facing charges.

Interior Minister Ivanovic has officially condemned Monday's unrest, declaring that those responsible would be brought to justice and punished. When inquired about the controversy regarding the so-called genocide hypothesis of the 19th century Kurkic Expulsions, Ivanovic said that the hypothesis advocated by Professor Zivkovic among others was fundamentally flawed and against mainstream Serbovian history writing. "However, that does not excuse acts of violence", the Interior Minister added.

Monday's events have led to calls from liberal opposition politicians and Kurkic activists for the government to enact measures against the Legion of St. Peter. Previous attempts by the FDUB to proscribe the Legion under Federal anti-extremism legislation have been thrown out of court, most recently in 2014.

CSEAC ratified by the Federal Congress after a heated debate

Both chambers of the Federal Congress have accepted a motion to ratify Serbovian membership in the Central and Southern Economic Advancement Co-operative. The Congress voted on the ratification today following a heavily divisive and intense debate in both houses of the Serbovian legislature, after which the motion was signed into law by President Radovan Nedic.

The CSEAC is a new free trade zone including the states of Serbovia, Bajororzsag, Vistarika,, Eiffelland and Remion. Existing barriers of trade between CSEAC memberstates will be removed by the new accords, though exemptions were made to protect economic sectors considered vital to national interest and security of individual memberstates. The inclusion of these exemptions, which permit states to support vital economic sectors under certain conditions, were demanded by Serbovia as a prerequisite for entering the accords.

A minority of dissenting Congressmen from the ruling Party of National Renewal voted against the ratification of the CSEAC agreement, and the opposition parties were heavily divided on the issue as well. The Liberal congressional caucus was split between supporters and opponents of the accords, as were the ethnic minority parties representing the Pannonian, Kurkic and Nizijan communities. The National Agrarian Party as well as the left-wing Socialist and Democratic Workers' Parties were overwhelmingly opposed to the agreement, as was the far-right Legion of St. Peter.

Concerns were raised by opponents that the agreement would jeopardize Serbovian economic and financial sovereignity and lead to unfavorable competition with other members of the agreement. Prime Minister Andelic made a ferocious defense of the CSEAC proposition in Congress, saying that the agreement would also open foreign markets to Serbovian companies and lead to an overall increase in national prosperity.

Serbovian conservatives applaud Bajororzsag's new abortion laws

The phenomenon of "abortion tourism" to the state of Bajororzsag from those countries which enforce restrictive abortion laws, such as Vistarika and Serbovia, appears to be reaching an end after Serbovia's northern neighborstate enacted new, stricter abortion laws. Bajororzsag's new abortion law restricts abortions done in the country to cases of disabilities, rape, and harm to the mother, and follows recent cross-border controversy over Vistarikan abortion tourism into the country.

Several hundred Serbovian women are estimated to have travelled to Bajororzsag each year to terminate their pregnancies, even though infanticide by Serbovian citizens away from Serbovian soil is still considered a federal offence under our laws. However, prosecutions resulting from such trips have been rare, and have largely taken place as a result of complaints made by an unborn child's father or other relatives to the authorities.

Serbovian conservatives and members of religious anti-abortion groups have sent congratulations to the Csonka administration for the decision. One of the first Serbovian politicians to comment on the decision was Federal Councilman Milovan Zoric, considered an informal leader of the Party of National Renewal's faction of religious conservatives.

"Our neighbors have made a responsible decision to protect the sanctity of human life, and this decision will also strenghten our own resolve to keep acting accordingly in the future", Zoric wrote in a blog post published in the home page of the Thomasian Society, Serbovia's most well-known Catholic lobbying group. Councilman Zoric is a member of the Society's board of governors. The Serbovian government has historically regarded Bajoran abortion law as an internal affair of that country, but individual PNR politicians have been vocal in demanding an end to abortion tourism targeting Bajororzsag.

Feminist groups and abortion activists condemned the decision, and a demonstration of an estimated number of 50 activists took place outside of the Bajoran embassy in Petrovgrad.

Mob boss Dimitar Dragovic arrested by authorities in a special ops raid

Last Tuesday, dozens of heavily armed police officers and armored cars descended into the small town of Mali Moskopolje, an otherwise peaceful middle-class suburb of commuters. It has now been announced that the purpose of the operation was the apprehension of mob boss Dimitar Dragovic, head of Moskopolje's Dragovic crime family and one of the most wanted men in Serbovia. Dragovic has been considered to be the chief architect of the ongoing Moskopolje Gang War, which has seen his syndicate take on the rival Zelic family to contest the Zelic's domination of illicit trade in the region.

The target of the operation was a fenced compound of two detached residential houses, both of which were assaulted by police special forces using breaching charges and flashbang grenades to shock and subdue the occupants of the buildings. Police sources said that two apparent mob soldiers were shot and killed as they opened fire on the police forces, after which the seven remaining suspects surrendered peacefully. Persons arrested include Dimitar Dragovic, his brother Roman and five other men said to be personal bodyguards of the Dragovic brothers.

Several automatic weapons were confiscated from the premises, as were large amounts of cash and computers possibly hosting details on the syndicate's operations. The confiscated evidence is being analyzed by the Federal Directorate of Investigation. The raid was apparently carried out by the Strategic Response Unit, the Federal Police's premier tactical team, which specializes in high-risk arrests and anti-terrorist operations.

Unconfirmed sources in the Moskopolje underworld say that remaining leadership of the Dragovic syndicate might be attempting to broker a truce with the Zelics to end the destructive mob war which has been ongoing since last August. There are even rumors that members of the syndicate would have given up their boss to the authorities to take charge of the group in the interests of peace, a move which would be historically unprecedented in the criminal underworld. The FDI has refused to comment on these rumors.

Dimitar Dragovic faces Federal charges of directly ordering several murders related to his organized crime activities, and lesser charges related to extortion, money laundering, fraud and drug smuggling. He has been wanted by the Federal government since 2017 for his role in organizing the shooting of Nadia Simic, a Moskopolje journalist who had been investigating the syndicate's ties with local politicians. Journalist organizations and human rights activists have applauded the arrest, as has Simic's widow Marko, who has since become a prominent anti-gang activist.

If his responsibility for killings carried out by his subordinates can be proven, Dragovic could face the death penalty. His subordinates will receive lesser charges which will possibly lead to lengthy prison sentences.

PETROVGRAD - Serbovia's largest automobile manufacturer Pobeda Corporation looks to expand its international market share by launching a new subsidiary brand especially geared towards budget clientele in Serbovia and abroad. Pobeda executives unveiled the new brand - called Čudo domestically and Prodigy in international markets - today at Pobeda's Petrovgrad headquarters to an audience of automobile journalists and other invited guests. Pobeda CEO Maxim Prekovic unveiled the first model manufactured under the new brand, an affordable family sedan titled Prodigy Ambition. Ambition is promised to provide accommodation for a driver and four passengers, and comes with multiple engine options ranging from 1.0l to 1.6l.

"Ambition embodies values that are key to the entire Prodigy brand and its future launches: Simplicity and affordability", Prekovic said to journalists, lauding the car's low price tag and relatively simple structure which would also enable cheap maintenance during the car's life cycle. The Prodigy product line is aimed towards young car owners looking for their first car, as well as customers in less well-off countries where cars that are cheap and easily repaired in local car repair shops are in great demand. According to company representatives, Prodigy also aims to launch a compact car and a station wagon version of Ambition within Q2 2021.

Customs Service retasks resources after CSEAC ratification

The Federal Customs Service has announced plans for widespread restructuring as a result of the ratification and implementation of the CSEAC accords, which are removing barriers from trade between Serbovia and neighboring states such as Remion and Bajororzsag. While previously the movement of goods between these countries has been the subject of various restrictions and tariffs, CSEAC will remove many of these restrictions, facilitating free movement of goods between signatory states.

Most of the existing restrictions of international trade are being removed among CSEAC memberstates, making the CSEAC Area the world's largest existing free trade zone. Both Bajororzsag and Remion have historically been significant trading partners for Serbovia, and enforcement of various import-related laws and regulations at Serbovia's land borders with these countries has been a major role of the Federal Customs Service, a law enforcement agency subordinate to the Ministry of Treasury. With the lifting of most of these regulations, hundreds of Customs officers are now being retasked to other roles by the agency. In addition, Customs staff are being retrained to work with new statutes related to the CSEAC, such as the enforcement of imports which share parts from both CSEAC and third-party memberstates.

"Though the barriers of trade itself are being removed, there remains work such as ensuring that imported goods are not in breach of our product safety standards, and that products of shared CSEAC and non-CSEAC origin are appropriately declared and treated as such, and resources will be retasked appropriately", Director of Customs General Slobodan Taskovic explained in an interview with NRK 1 TV.

In addition, General Taskovic warned that organized criminal groups might be attempting to take advantage of the projected increase in goods traffic across the Serbovian-Remionese and Serbovian-Bajorok borders to ramp up their cross-border smuggling enterprises. Dealing with this projected threat is another major concern for the Federal Customs Service, and personnel freed from their current customer service and goods-processing roles will be appropriately retrained to perform border inspections in search of illicit goods such as narcotics, black market liquor and tobacco and firearms.

Charges filed against fifty far-right activists for rioting at Petrovgrad University

Federal prosecutors are filing charges against fifty far-right activists involved in last month's rioting at the University of Petrovgrad. The persons charged are mostly members of the Serbovian Youth Vanguard, which in turn is a youth wing of the Legion of St. Peter, and include several prominent members of the group. Youth Vanguard members stormed the University of Petrovgrad campus to interrupt a controversial lecture about the early 19th century Kurkic Expulsions, forcing lecture attendants out and vandalizing university grounds before being repelled by a riot police intervention.

Youth Vanguard deputy chairmen Jovan Milutinovic and Ljubisa Ilic as well as the group's Petrovgrad leader Adrian Zivic are being charged with organizing and leading a riot with extremist motives, a crime that carries the maximum penalty of up to ten years in prison. The remaining defendants are facing charges including rioting with extremist motives, destruction of public property, making threats of violence and resisting law enforcement, and could face lesser prison sentences or probation.

Because offenses related to political extremism fall under federal jurisdiction, the charges relating to the incident will be dealt with in the Federal Criminal Court for Nova Srbovija and Greater Petrovgrad. Prosecutors claim that the events of 25th of January were directly orchestrated by Youth Vanguard leaders as a show of force and with the intent of threatening the physical safety of Dimitar Zivkovic, the Petrovgrad professor at the center of these events. Should the court agree, it would also open the door for a potential court-issued ban against the Youth Vanguard under federal anti-extremism laws. Such a ban can only be sought out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which has stated that it will await for the court verdict on the criminal charges pertaining to the rioting.

Professor Zivkovic, who was giving the lecture in question, has been surrounded by controversy ever since he published his controversial theory that the Kurkic Expulsions of the 1820s were a deliberate genocide ordered by King Aleksandar III to wipe out Serbovia's Kurkic minority. Aleksandar III is one of the most beloved monarchs of Serbovian history due to his role in defending Serbovia against the Varovian invasions, and held in great reverence by many Serbovians. Accordingly, there have been strong calls to dismiss Zivkovic from his place at the UP Faculty of History by politicians and right-wing student activists.

Meanwhile, the University of Petrovgrad has announced that it has placed Zivkovic on a temporary leave owing to concerns that his safety could not possibly be guaranteed at the campus. The move has faced criticism from liberals who allege that the University leadership is bowing down to right-wingers who have called for Zivkovic's dismissal from his post, a claim that was strongly denied by university administration.

The Legion of St. Peter, which holds multiple seats in the Federal Congress, has announced that it would be providing legal support to any members facing charges as a result of the 25th of January riots. In a statement released to the press, Legion chairman and Federal Councilman Dragan Vidovic denied claims that the incident had been a deliberate act of violence on the group's behalf. Vidovic said that the rally had been a peaceful and legal demonstration and claimed that the disturbances at the event had been organized by plainclothes agents provocateur belonging to the internal security services. In addition, he accused the federal government of deliberately attempting to engineer an excuse to enact measures against the Legion.

Criminal trials in relation to the riots are expected to begin in two weeks.
