Since it looks like Averin prior to the Directorate is going to take on a UK role, I am creating this thread here for the intents and purposes of coordinating history as a major colonial power to the eventual gradual collapse of the Empire's hold over the colonies, to the Great War, the economic collapse and then to the new order and the formation of the Directorate. So far from what I have seen

We have

the spread of the Averinish language via colonization,

Former colonies.

Cantignia
Oneida (perhaps a joint venture or competition with @Firesea Union as Warre.)

Current Colonies still under Averinish control

Darsenland

So far I know that there is not much, but I wanted to get this thread made to start discussion before I went to work today.

On the November Revolution and Montelimar...

I figured I will tackle the biggest and more important topic to world history first.

Starting in 1969, the Empire of Averin having lost most of it's colonial holding's and having been dealt a crippling blow in The Great War not but twenty years earlier was subjected to a severe economic downturn as a result of years of deficit spending, warfare, and deindustrialization as a result of globalization. (This could have been part of a more regional economic depression or a global depression, doesn't matter.) Unemployment rates shot to double digit numbers and many people, who once had lived comfortable lives, found themselves unable to pay mortgages, feed their families or pay for other basic necessities. Credit defaults rose and a credit crunch soon developed due to the increased risk. Banking failures soon followed as the King's government attempted and failed to rectify the issue only exacerbating the problem, followed by a decrease in the credit rating of the entire empire by international financial institutions.

While the King, other nobility and elites were shielded from the chaos of the depression by their immense wealth, suicide rates and homelessness skyrocketed. In a small Harrowgate community, the patriarch of the Allen family, nearing eviction, poisoned his wife and son and then killed himself shortly after in a misguided attempt to shield them from ending up on the street. The son, Trent, only 18 woke up in a hospital, his neighbor having discovered his dead parents and reporting the still barely living Trent to paramedics. Having had his life upended, Trent spent a month in the hospital where he met with a communist involved with the local GCL (Global Confederation of Labor) member amongst the unionized nurses. Having taking a liking to the nurse who told her politics to him he joined the local GCL chapter and was even sent to the CCCR for indoctrination. ( @UCWR let me know if you agree with this.) Having spent six months in indoctrination in the CCCR, Trent was exposed to the inner workings of Council Communism, he found that there, the government was even more byzantine and slow than the King's government. When Trent returned to Averin he found himself radicalized in the opposite direction and soon was associated with a small but growing fascist movement that called themselves the Order of the Hand.

Within the Order, Trent quickly rose through the ranks, his training by the CCCR's GCL coming in handy as he merged socialist thought with authoritarian autocracy or as Allen called it: Averinish Socialism. The Order was popular amongst industrial labor unions, the police, the military, and the youth who's lives had been stolen from them by economic collapse, gaining members at an astonishing rate as the King and his government's popularity cratered with the people. By 1973 the Order had infiltrated many parts of Averin's government and society and turned it's focus toward creating links with the native population of Darsenland, Averin's last colony, a place where brutal suppression of native rights and labor rights movements was taking place with greater frequency. By 1974 the Order was ready to strike, when the call to action came, the Order was swift as it moved through the country. Generals and other high ranking military officers, police chiefs, factory management, CEO's, members of Parliament and even the King and his family were all slaughtered over a week long period that brought the entire country to a halt, even the King's son was killed as he visited Cantignia.

The Order of the Hand had executed it's final solution with stunning accuracy as every facet of government and society had been infiltrated by it's zealous members. Shortly after, Trent Allen, installed himself as Director of what he called the Directorate of Averin, revealing his directives to the people of Averin who in their shock and desperate want for change scarcely resisted.

Over the next few years, Allen reshaped the entire country, eliminating private enterprise and property and taking direct control of Averin's vast resources. The old government was disbanded, those who had not been killed or escaped nor swore loyalty to the new Directorate were sent to labor camps where most either died or soon were made willing to follow the tenets of Averinish Socialism. Not long after Darsenland was brought fully into the fold as the last holdouts of the Empire were swept away.

Neighboring Montelimar, also a monarchy had watched in horror as the Averinish slaughtered the Averin royal family, who unsurprisingly where cousins with the royal family of Montelimar. Montelimar had also been similarly affected by the economic crisis that also affected Averin, but was not as in dire straits. While Montelimar was no slouch in the military department, the former Empire had a modest stockpile of nuclear weapons which were now under control of the Directorate. Ironically the nuclear material had been provided by Montelimar, who had not pursued nuclear weapons and instead had focused their nuclear program on energy. Far behind in the nuclear arms race, Montelimar started production on a bomb, word of which soon reached Director Allen's ears through Averin's growing spy network. Allen, understanding that Averin was not ready for a war, began to use his spy networks to foment fascist movements across the entire Kingdom of Montelimar. Montelimar was soon embroiled in fascist riots, that Averin funded through the silver deposits in Darsenland and with the help of Azilia. Averin and Azilia had previously engaged diplomatically with each other after Trent Allen installed himself as Director, similarly authoritarian, Azilia saw Averin as a kindred spirit and the two nations began to covertly work together on several projects, one of which was the destabilization of Montelimar, a historic rival of @Azilia .

By 1979, Averin had built it's industrial base and military to a point where it would be ready for an invasion. Fascist movements, mostly all puppets of Averin struck first, crippling Montelimar's civilian and military infrastructure in a move that harkened back to the Order of the Hand's simultaneous strike on it's target's of interest. At the same time Averin launched it's amphibious campaign, which Montelimar had been aware of, but was now finding itself on the backfoot as the Averinish fifth column incapacitated Montelimar's internal defenses. The initial battle on the beaches was intense, but Averin soon established a foothold and with the help of it's fifth column and Azilia technical and intelligence assistance was able to slowly advance through the country culminating in the death of the Montelimaren King and his family as the capital city was encircled and the Montelimaren Army surrendered in 1982

(At this point if @Eiffelland or @Petits-Pays wants to interject and involve themselves in some way, then I am open to discussing that, however this is the basic storyline that I would like to keep to.)

I hate this, the GLC will not be responsible for Allen's bastardization of the Revolution (I love this idea and want to incorporate it). As I develop my history more, I plan to include struggles between the council communists and the vanguardists. Maybe some of the CCCR's vanguardist try-hards defected to the Order of the Hand.

I am fine with Warre having historically collaborated on the process of the project that is Oneida, either as a fellow colonizer, an ally, or a former member of the Averin Empire, though it would create greater tensions in the modern day (and perhaps explain why/how it is in the sphere of The Firesea Union) if it broke away after the Directorate of Averin began coalescing.

It very well could have been a Scotland situation where it had its own parliament and such and then broke away at some point, not necessarily when the directorate took over but earlier if need be for your purposes.

I wouldn't know. Either my government stepped in but lost due to Montelimar having become a wasp nest of fascist groups fighting a guerrilla against Eiffellandian troops in Montelimar, or Eiffelland itself had to deal with the Rote Befreiungsarmee (my not- ) on the one hand and a bunch of fascists on the other hand, or both.

Well it's up to you, I am willing to try and integrate as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Nothing is fully set into stone. It could very well be that fascist and communist movements were spreading like wildfire across Middle Europe/Gallia-Germania at this time, Eiffelland was simply able to weather the storm.

We could even have it be little green men were sent in early on in preparation for the invasion using the Azilian-Montese border, helping cut-off escape routes for the royal family. This conflict and our seemingly same-time of rapid heavy industry growth leading up to it could be where we decided to make the joint fighter we did with it having its debut at the tail end of the conflict.

While not publicly endorsing either side of the conflict, it would also have been noticeably mute about the conflict right on its border region. It would have probably kept a rail line open that was a 'dual purpose' it would give the appearance of helping evacuate some montese citizens into the Republic, but primarily it was to ship supplies across the border for the guerillas and Averin forces. The number of refugees coming back on the trains would have been limited to clergy & other members of the catholic faith that had been vetted by the Republics embassy and granted temporary asylum. Those deemed a risk after the end of the conflict would be shipped back across the border, while others remained so long as they played nice and left their political opinions in the past.

You yourself should also feel comfortable with it.

But maybe there is a fourth idea. It could be that you not only tried to conquer Montelimar but also Petits-Pays and Eiffelland. Or only Eiffelland. In the end, you could not conquer (Petits-Pays and) Eiffelland, but on the other hand (Petits-Pays and) Eiffelland could not push you out of Montelimar, either. When both sides came to realise that, (Petits-Pays and) Eiffelland accepted that you would annex Montelimar, and you accepted that you could not conquer (Petits-Pays and) Eiffelland.

I put Petits-Pays in brackets, because I did not discuss that with him, and for this we need his approval as well. @Petits-Pays , what are your thoughts?

By the way, can I RP that our RP-equivalents of Jean-Michel Jarre, Didier Marouani, France Gall and Michel Berger fled to Eiffelland? They are composers and musicians.

Yea that's actually not a bad idea, Averin could have been trying the same tactics on Eiffelland and Pays-Petits as it was in Montelimar it just wasn't successful in the same way it was in Montelimar, meaning your countries were more able to resist. and of course as long as they aren't members of the Royal Family then you can say they fled to Eiffelland.

As far as integration goes, I've got just a couple points off the top of my head.

Since Mjóðland is right north of former Oneida, then I was wondering if you'd be game for a major conflict in 1870-74. I've got it in my history as the war that pushes the Elfriki Confederation to its limits and results in the strengthening of the fylki into the Pact of Federation. That's of course, assuming that Oneida was still under @Averin's control at the time.

Prior to that, there's also the multilateral pressure from "colonial powers" in the west and Islam in the east, which drives the previously-independent "City-Leagues" to join into the Elfriki Confederation in the first place, in 1762. In which case, I imagine Averin would probably still have control of the Oneida colonies (unless it's been stated otherwise elsewhere). If you'd be good for that bit, I can also add that in.

As far as the Directorate era goes, I'm working on that historical bit. And I was wondering if you'd be alright with multiple Elfric mercenary groups operating in Darsenland starting from July-ish of '75, till November. November being the point at which most would have already pulled out, and my main Black Hawk Down-ish idea would occur with one of the last groups trying to extract the bishop (RIP).

I'm open to changing the range up to better align with what you've got in mind.

Thanks. Then we still need the approval of @Petits-Pays / @Saxe-Franken and Landshut for his part.

By the way, our RP versions of Jean-Michel Jarre, Didier Marouani, France Gall and Michel Berger are not related to the Royal Family.

But Jean-Michel Jarre's album "Revolutions" may have had another connotation in our world ;)

So realize this is a little off topic but figured the best place to figure out shared history, especially when it comes to Oneida (its descendants) and the former Averinish Empire, is in here.

Mostly a pitch but here are some ideas. Warre existed as an independent kingdom, participating in the great game of setting up colonies and the like up until the point of (1653) where it was brought under the same monarch, first in a personal union and then as an united kingdom, united realm, whatever we want to call it, with Averin. Before this point, it may or may not have been different in size and territory, but after this point for several hundred years, it was apart of Averin or another name for the island continent as a whole as a single polity.

It participating in the founding of what would become Oneida, both by setting its own colonies up before the union and providing colonists and soldiers to the colonial effort afterwards. This included some groups of Warreic young men working as freelancers and mercenaries for the colonial companies in their efforts against other colonies and or against native polities which may have been their enemies. However, aside from this is steadily began to 'Averinize', getting closer in culture to its southern cousins up until the point of a series of incidents, first in some landowners pushing out highlander villages in places to allow for greater livestock grazing areas, and later in an event which sparked outrage, (and feel free to give me ideas and feedback on what kind of out rage and some extra causes) primarily caused by the sheer number of Warreic immigrants to Oneida during a famine or famines (it doesn't have to be a potato famine, but that's easy and on brand, it could be a mixture of things actually) which dropped its population sharply and brought up a reawakening of national and regional identity to the point that by some time in the 1930s to 1950s (dates can be adjusted, as mentioned, if it needs to be earlier or later), it break away from Averin once again, be it entirely peacefully, with a revolution, or just ending up inheriting the section of the royal family that survived, and breaking away by being the survivor of the previous political unit.

Very rough idea though.

If @CCCR is ok with having Oneida be independent later on in history then yea I am fine with that. in fact that period could be where the Empire of Averin falls from it's high water mark so to speak, with a victory for you, independence for Oneida and the now downward spiral for the Empire.

As for Darsenland, however you want that to go with your mercenary groups up until they leave I am fine with that.

I am fine with that until the Royal Family. the Royal Family of Averin must be extinct as I am not really interested in doing any lost family member thing or someone trying to press their claim to the Directorate's lands. In 1930-50 it could very well be that the Warreic people were tired of mismanagement by the King's government and the Warreic Royal Family who up to this point would have been possibly some sort of lesser king simply breaks away. Maybe around the great war time as that would mean Averin would not have the ability to prevent it if it was engaged in war elsewhere?

Does that work?

I'm fine with this. It's not a copy-paste of the US, which is nice. I have not spent a lot of time thinking about what Oneida was like aside from perhaps a 1880s Gilded Age America on steroids.

Alright, I think it's time for some open coordination!

As I've slowly figure out how my nation is going to work, I would like to put it on the forum my intentions. I'll start with the exact quote that I originally posted on discord on December 2nd.
I have thought about this idea, but I don't know if it would work—it is an alternative to playing up Petits-Pays as a major. This idea focuses on a French small nation-state ruled by a Duke. When Montelimar is annexed and the King as his family is killed, the next heir would be the Duke of _Petits-Pays/ or xyz_. This nation being aligned to Josepania or something would make it unpalatable to war immediately with and annex for Averin. However there is the claim. While Montelimar's extended colonies are still open to continue the war at the close of 1982, Averin wants this shit to end as they got what they wanted. In order to get rid of the colonial nuisance, and solve the problem of the royal claim of Montelimar proper, Averin tells my nation to drop the claim of Montelimar proper, but inherit the colonies of Montelimar. A sketchy agreement is made that Averin intends to backstab, but they've never gotten around to it to this date, and the truth of the deal comes out in 1985 causing my own government to collapse in a scandal during that time.
Your responded exactly with...
Im down for that

After that brief exchange, my encyclopedia post has been edited to the beginnings of this concept, and the username and such has changed to "Bourgardie" my spin on some European names.

I'd like to figure out a bit more on how to coordinate this idea though. More or less, my plan is just to map some random colonial things I'd like and call it part of this "deal." If you'd like, I can map them out in this thread before hand so you can formally give the ok, but I like the idea of the colonial holdings being substantial enough that it really would be a pain for Averin to embark on their conquest, especially after the miscalculation that these colonies would merely capitulate. That said, I don't mean to make it seem that these colonial holdings are a super happy place for me either, but the peace terms became acceptable in 1982 regardless to end the fighting. So your opinion on how this happens would be helpful.

Other things I'd like to have coordinated:
  • I'd like to RP that the war paid a huge price in terms of refugees, and as the major nation of similar cultural type there—Francien—was a massive exodus of Montillen people both during the war, and after the war to Bourgardie. This clearly amplifying after the surrender and news of full annexation. I do not know if Averin cares about this mass emigration. Additionally that would mean separated families, and I don't know if Averin cares about allowing reunification or communication between them.
  • I like the idea of Montelimar's naval fleet hiding in the colonies having sunk itself when demanded to be handed over in some kind of big event when ordered to. This way I don't gain from it, and it might help explain Averin's submarine fleet rather than surface fleet as they didn't gain one as they had hoped?
  • Tightly linked to the prior issue is border control. My assumption is our borders have insane amounts of security largely based on Averin's ambition to keep its citizens in, but also to keep other citizens out. Bourgardie's major concern adding to this border security would be an interest in preventing an invasion from Averin. That said, thinking of 2015 Coen Brothers and Steven Spielberg collaborative historical drama and thriller Bridge of Spies, do we have say a common checkpoint where we conduct border deals and informal discussions?
  • As a parliamentary constitutional monarchy,—with a fondness for Tiburian Catholicism—I believe our nations are at ideological odds. So my assumption is a great deal of distrust, and with the original quote I provided, Averin's original intention was to stab Bourgardie in the back after the deal. That said, I would expect a great deal of espionage between our nations occurs, I don't think a lot of it would be meaningful for either of us. Our Francien speaking populations speaking different accents, and having slight culture differences that are not understood by others, but keenly sensed by locals. Simple differences for example in how numbers are counted between RL France and Belgium would be a rookie mistake by a spy, but not impossible to make out of habit. So I think while espionage is perhaps common between us, it's not really fruitful, and perhaps even on the decline after a series of scandals that are perhaps uncovered in both nations, albeit Averin would never make that information public.
  • Additionally, looking at the current RP you have with prisoners from Yuan, should this escalate our relations? Or is this just business as usual and we can be like, look these Yuanese had it coming, just look at our relationship and borders with Averin over the last 43 years, whatever is happening here was just ignorance of these Yuanese people to the extreme. Is Bourgardie a common place for issues to be directed? For example would Yuanese travel to Bourgardie to protest at the border as a common thing to have happen? Even if the border is militarized, I imagine there are "safe" places on my side where protests might regularly occur.
  • There is also the question of Francien heritage. I am currently operating with the idea that much of Paris' architecture is more in a city in my nation, although it is a coastal port city type of Paris instead of inland. Le-Vieux-Bourg as I've often RP'd, though perhaps without the historical centrality and significance to the Francien people, would host many palaces, the Eiffel Tower(?), and cathedrals, etc... Of course, Montelimar's old capital city should have its own treasures tragically lost or looked at from afar in a romantic scene where we cannot go visit these Francien treasures. The Louvre? Versailles? Or do you want such a central icon as the Eiffel Tower?
I don't know how in-depth you want to go with a lot of this. It is likely less important to your RP than mine. So simple answers are acceptable too.

Lastly, I suppose the big question is how much are our nations actually at odds these days? Do we have periods of détente? Are we in a period of détente in order to start RP with stability?

I would think that during the initial invasion large portions of what was left over of the Empire/Kingdom of Averin's fleet that was taken over in the revolution would probably be lost during this period. Fighting Montelimar, Eiffelland and Bougardie at the same time would most likely prove fatal to many a sailor in the small confines of the Opaline sea and would leave the area a graveyard of ships. This is probably where Averin decided a doctrine of submarines and accompanying surface ships rather than large carrier groups would be more effective after the end of the war. Whatever of the big ships were able to escape the carnage to the colonies could have been demanded and as such the loyal sailors scuttled them instead of obeying any treaty stipulations. This of course would have made the Directorate very angry, but being so close to the war and planning on abandoning the treaty later on anyways, they decide to not press it further.

Most likely because @Eiffelland bravely decided to join in on your side of the war the Averinish would have miscalculated the length and scope of the war as well as it's intensity, saved only because of the effectiveness of fomenting fascist movements in your nations and the quick collapse of the Montelimaren military to the same issues.

By 1982, yes Averin wanted the whole pie but was unable to seal the deal and so a deal was made to end the war and let Rectification of captured lands occur and rebuilding of the military. That's kinda how I see it and I am open to ideas on how to make that better if need be.

The period after the war I am calling Rectification as the Ministry of Unity and it's goon squads from Internal Security (INSEC) began the de-christianization/de-jewification/de-islamization/de-any religion. Averin and it's supporters in Montelimar would have been doing this from the moment they had a foothold on the continent but it would have been more in earnest after the war. So yes, before the border was sealed there would have most likely been a constant stream of people trying to get into Bougardie/Eiffelland/ @Azilia / @Ebria

Reunification visits ala like North Korea could be a thing in a demilitarized zone, but communication beyond that is a no-go, any sort of comms lines going between our countries will have been cut. So outside of radio comms, probably not.

I think this is satisfied by my first response to you further up on this post. But yes, I agree.

Tightly linked to the prior issue is border control. My assumption is our borders have insane amounts of security largely based on Averin's ambition to keep its citizens in, but also to keep other citizens out. It would essentially be like the Iron Curtain and there would be possibly a demilitarized zone associated with it and a major checkpoint like North Korea and South Korea has. I am happy to have this and if you want to place that somewhere on the map when everything is mapped I leave it up to you where it would make sense to have it. It's possible that there are three one for each nation I border, though the border with Azilia would be similarly hardened Azilia and Averin are allied during this war and in the now so probably not as intensely. At best this will be a good RP vector at worst it's just a cool feature of the map. So let's do it.

As a parliamentary constitutional monarchy,—with a fondness for Tiburian Catholicism—I believe our nations are at ideological odds. This can be assumed, i figure however we want this to be renewed or explored we can do in current time RP. I just wanted to post this picture, I have nothing real to add here.

Additionally, looking at the current RP you have with prisoners from Yuan, should this escalate our relations? Or is this just business as usual and we can be like, look these Yuanese had it coming, just look at our relationship and borders with Averin over the last 43 years, whatever is happening here was just ignorance of these Yuanese people to the extreme. It's business as usual, I am not sure how @YUANGUO wants this interaction to go, but the Averinish State is not unwilling to negotiate things, I want that to be clear, however it will want to extract concessions every time. Like spies for spies.... spies for citizens... foreign currency :3, etc. I can see Bougardie as a state that could broker deals if it wants that to be a thing. Same with Azilia or Eiffelland or Ebria. I imagine that in this case, the eleven people that were arrested broke through the border through Bougardie as that is what I am imagining in my mind palace right now. Protests at the border probably happens, since it's a demilitarized zone or whatever we want it to be, I am sure your side has activity on it and I am just blasting propaganda at you 24/7.

There is also the question of Francien heritage. Versailles? Or do you want such a central icon as the Eiffel Tower?

This is entirely up to you, I do not need to have the Eiffel tower or other major french architectural wonders, but I imagine after the end of the war much art and treasure was lost behind the lines in Averin where it is probably enjoyed by elites of the party or used to fund Averin's international paramilitary endeavors or funding destabilizing movements in enemy countries. No doubt a famous artists works ended up on the black market... or perhaps fakes. In fact Averin could very well be putting fakes out to sell to foolish rich folk who think they are recovering something lost or to have in their degenerate mansions.

No doubt many churches were destroyed in Rectification, so if you want to RP people crying because the Notre Dame was turned into a mass grave site then yea that is something we can do. If you have your eye on something for your nation as being a crown jewel or wonder then please feel free to claim it. I've already said famous artists could have run off to Eiffelland, surely they did the same to Bougardie.

Lastly, I suppose the big question is how much are our nations actually at odds these days? Do we have periods of détente? Are we in a period of détente in order to start RP with stability?

Right now I would say détente is status quo for the beginning of this revamped scenario. Détente for Averin is like this: same amount of guns pointed at you, but like the guys with the guns are off playing cards/napping/staring wistfully at the horizon. Diplomacy is just as cold and hard as usual, but there are no threats being lobbed and such.

I hope this covers things for you. let me know if you need more.

@CCCR

Would you guys prefer hashing out the war a bit, or is the general idea of the war enough?
