"The flag of five colours" National flag of the Federal Republic of Gran-Occidentia Motto: Unity and Liberty Capital City: Puerto Angeles Official Languages: Azilene, Tepehuán, Varihío other various indigenous languages are recognised but not supported to the same extent. Government: Federal Presidential Republic Judiciary: National Council of Gran-Occidentia Subdivisions: Provinces Population: 90,600,000 Religion: Tiburan Catholic (80%), indigenous faiths (10%), Protestant Christianity (5%) Non-religious (5%) | The Federal Republic of Gran-Occidentia is a nation situated in the north-west of South-Occidentia neighbouring the states of Muntíca to the north and New Baetica to the east. The last of the Azilian Viceroyalties established it was also the last to fall to revolution. Following it's eventual independence in 1837 Gran-Occidentia would briefly become a Kingdom under the rule of King Manuel Palafox Ibarrola. The Kingdom only lasting five years (1837-1842) before King Manuel was deposed in the Primera Guerra Nacional de Protección ( First National Protection War) and the first Republic of Gran-Occidentia established. The First Republic (1842-1854) would following the Ranchero War be replaced with the more centralized Second Republic (1854-1927) which then was overthrown in the 1927 " March on Puerto Angeles" by the Unión Nacional Integralista ushering in the Gran-Occidentian State (1927-1943) which was later replaced by the Third Republic (1943-present) during the Segunda Guerra Nacional de Protección ( Second National Protection War). For the decades since the establishment of the Third Republic, Gran-Occidentia has known a period of unprecedented calm and stability well at least on the surface. But where some see calm others see stagnation and various cliques and factions constantly squabble for dominance, and while these squabbles have never yet erupted into open violence some feel it is only a matter of time. National Quirks The power of the Provinces: The Third Republic is heavily decentralised, this was to allow democracy to flourish, to prevent the rise of another Party-State but what has happened is that that now the Provinces, their Governors and regional elites rule like feudal lords of old, local democracy forgotten amidst a mire of corruption and cronyism. The Central Government such as it is often finds itself dancing to the tune of the hacendados and rancheros. Cliques upon Cliques: The Navy competes with the Airforce for funding, the Federal army divides itself along provincial lines and personal loyalties. The various provincial militias change their allegiances almost daily depending on which ranchero or hacendado can fill their pockets . Even the civil service is not immune to this factionalism, fast tracking policies or tying them in red tape depending on where their loyalties lie. succinctly put Gran-Occidentian politics is like a pit of vipers. |
