This thread is primarily for hashing out mutual, sweeping history with @Zagora and @Elfríki off of Discord and onto the forums for more ease of access etc.

Elfríki Summary (Slavic Competition): I see Józefania having a very, very contentious history with the Elfríki Federation from mutual inception up to the end of the Great War, based first and foremost on the spat between Catholicism and Orthodoxy over who's the true OG Christian sect and who's the dirty heretic, and influence over the Slavs (the Zalonarussians in Elfriki, the Polesians and Ruthenians in Józefania). There probably wouldn't be quite as many on-again off-again wars as with Ebria, but two big ones that immediately come to mind will be detailed a bit more later: The Deluge and the Great War.

Ebria Summary (Catholic & Tiburan Competition): This is a bit trickier than with Zagora for simple geographic reasons, but initial discussions with Ovi have provided some very interesting ideas. First: the rivalry could be born from Józefania (and/or its immediate predecessors, the Vistulanie) declaring themselves a Third Tibur, supplanting the Pelasgians (aka notByzantines) and touting its Apostolic honoraries, much to the immense irritation of the Ebrians who would instead see themselves as the true, best Catholics outside of Tibur. Second: the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had a cultural thing called
, where per Wikipedia: "it formed a central aspect of the Commonwealth social elites’ culture and society. At its core was the unifying belief that the people of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth descended from the ancient , the legendary invaders of contemporary Polish and Roman lands in antiquity." In this case, Józefania would swap that out for Tiburanism, a sort of odd cosplaying as the true successors to the Tiburan Empire with the Pelasgians going the way of the Byzantines and being Orthodox etc., which provides Ebria reason to be truly hateful of Józefania for being a bunch of dirty barbarian Slavs cosplaying as Tiburans while the Ebrians themselves were part of the Empire and a core aspect to boot. Thirdly, there could be an ongoing competition in notItaly over influence of the area, somewhat similar to the Guelphs vs Ghibellines, and/or France & the Holy Roman Empire competing over influence over the various Italian city-states, etc. This would require any future Italian nation there to incorporate this history, MAYBE an NPC (though that's not strictly necessary), definitely a lot of wars trying to secure Papal favor etc.

The Deluge, 1648 to 1666: This would be one of the big wars that defines the relations between these three nations, and Józefania especially. Drawing from the real life , the Elfriki and Ebrians would stand in for the Russians and Swedes respectively, and nearly overrun Józefania entirely, coming quite close to wiping it off the map. The Elfriki involvement would be easy enough to explain, attempting to essentially conquer and incorporate the Polesians and Ruthenians into their realm in some form of proto-Pan-Slavism Orthodox-style, and their withdrawal could coincide with either outside forces (like Islamist Jihadists akin to the Crimean Tartars) providing a greater distraction or internal conflict (civil war and/or succession crisis), though that would require some significant changes to history that I hope Zalo would be open to.

Ebria, meanwhile, is trickier given the geography, but Ovi suggested that the Ebrians essentially fund the creation of a massive mercenary army made up of Italiotes, Germans, French, Pelasgians, Ebrians, even Vistulans, Livonians, Ruthenians, and Polesians and has a sort of proto-filibuster episode invading Józefania to the west, simultaneous with the Elfriki invasion to the east. I suggested they combine this with bribing a massive amount of nobles within the commonwealth to abuse the Liberum Veto and sabotage the commonwealth as much as possible, bringing Józefania to its knees. However, Ebria's heavy-handed two-pronged assault, combined with the existential threat of being wiped off the map from both fronts, rallies the Józefanie in a sort of porto-nationalism, and through the efforts of some to-be-named King, they rally and win enough decisive victories against both the mercenaries and Elfriki, exploiting weaknesses such as problems at home for the latter, and the nature of mercenary armies going pillaging and plundering and otherwise being uncontrollable due to a lack of payment from the Ebrians, because it turns out investing in mercenaries AND traitor nobles is ridiculously expensive, and the commonwealth beats back both fronts and survives. As a result, the Liberum Veto is abolished, Polesia and Ruthenia are raised to coequal status (perhaps midway through the war in 1659), and Józefania becomes more of a unitary state with federal aspects as a direct result of the war.

The Great War, 1950-1953: This one I don't have AS much information on, but I expect this to be the last big war between Elfríki and Józefania, and will be yet another conflict involving Ebria trying to destabilize and otherwise knock Józefania down a peg. The war itself is extremely bloody and ultimately inconclusive, and it establishes a final peace between Elfríki and Józefania, and will include the Christmas Truces and soldier fraternization of what you'd expect from the RL Great War but in the 50s.

The Last War, 1980-1985: This is the last big war between Ebria and Józefania, where a Greek-style military Junta in Ebria attacks Józefania in a bid to shore up support that's otherwise been flagging domestically, and it becomes a primarily naval conflict and involve the overseas Józefanie territory of Aresura, a conflict that results in Ebria's defeat and overthrow of the junta and restoration of the monarchy. This brings about the Millennial Peace, a treaty that officially ends the Millennial War and starts a very, very, very awkward rapprochement between Ebria and Józefania in the face of a much graver existential threat in the Averinish Directorate (and to an extent the 2nd Azilian Republic), which also provides a catalyst for the creation of a notNATO for all the constitutional monarchies.

There is so, so, so much that still needs to be filled in here, including more wars, details to the wars listed above, changes to these wars, etc., but I wanted to get the ball rolling at the very least so we can start building off this base and create something extremely intricate and defining for all our nations, and to invite other nations who are interested in meddling in our historical shenanigans to propose their own involvement. This could even provide a blueprint for other regional historical collaborative narratives, and even a reference for future historical RP fleshing out some of these wars (I would, for instance, love to RP out the Deluge).

I am all for it. I imagine that probably at the same time Jozefania takes the apostolic title and starts to call itself the 3rd Tibur, the kingdoms of Trastámara and Bética are united, forming the Crown of Ebria, led too by rulers who want to say that they continue the Tiburan tradition.

As for the rivalry from the Middle Ages, I imagine that the Kingdom of Betica was the initial hostile one to Jozefania, probably starting over commercial issues in the Meridian Sea and then turning by the 15th and 16th centuries into this conflict to gain authority in the Italianate Peninsula and over the Catholic Church. Probably while Azilia was looking west and was creating its colonial empire, Ebria looked east, trying to keep up. I imagine there would be interventions in the Papal State and in @Petits-Pays 's duchy in the area. We could talk with some players in the area when they come to add this part in their medieval and early modern history.

In your Deluge, I imagine Ebria organising a Filibuster-like adventure, sending an army of mercenaries to attack Jozefania and maybe get some of its szlachta to join them. It probably devastated much of southern Jozefania, but Ebria's coffers too were feeling the brunt of it, as the longer the war, the more the mercenaries had to be paid to keep a semblance of an army.

The last war I imagine it's similar to the Cod Wars, starting with fishing trawlers harassing each other and leading to a full on naval war between the two, but leading to the collapse of the Junta of General Campo Navarro.

After this, the democracy is restored and this is the moment the rapprochement starts, mainly with the idea that we might be small fish in the bowl compared to what is happening around us, especially with the CCCR existing in the west, the Yuan Empire in the far east, Averin taking over Montelimar and so on.

These are the years the Yuan Empire would be going through massive upheavel, or at the very least "very consequential" recent events:
  • 1650 Yuan Guo Coup d'état - Brought the current clan to imperial power
  • 1870 Battle of Da Qiao - Failed labour uprising
  • 1900 Twin Kingdom Civil War - Widespread rioting because of a succession crisis for the Twin Kingdom Provinces in Yuan
Other notable events are found in Yuan's history as detailed from 1500 BCE to 148 CE, there is of course more room to add past 148 CE.

My reference would be post 1980, when compared to the size and economy of the Yuanguo Empire, Ebria's would be like a minnow. That is probably why, like how the UK and France understood they would be eaten alive if they continue their shitty rivalry, Ebria and Jozefania went for a rapprochement too. It feels that with so many big nations, or strong regimes that could outright annex another nation, if we continue like before, especially when we're exhausted and see no reason nor any future for this rivalry, the concept of "After a millennia of war, a millennia of friendship" came from.

Regarding the apostolic and 3rd Tibur titles, I expect the both to occur sometime no earlier than the late 11th century. For the former, it could be around Christmas Day on 1000 that the Archduke of Vistulania (whoever that may be, possibly ol' Saint Józef I) is declared an Apostolic Archduke (or perhaps I just go with Kingdom, unsure) and has Apostolic Legate conferred upon him for his Christianization of the east. With the latter, which I figure should be tied to Pelasgia (our present stand-in for the Byzantine Empire), perhaps sometime around 1204 CE when the notFourth Crusade occurs and Propontis falls. Both instances would definitely provide some impetus for Ebria to be in a rivalry.

I like the further details here with the commercial rivalry with Betica providing further reason for rivalry, seems reminiscent of the feud between Genoa and Venice in that regard, and Ebria competing with Józefania in the east for colonies while Azilia turns west seems logical.

Regarding also the Italianate Peninsula, I have seriously considered shifting my borders ever so slightly to the following, which I think will make the meddling more reasonable from a geographic perspective alone:

You must be registered to see images.

Essentially the copper valley becomes Józefania's new southwestern border with the southern branch of the notDanube and western slopes of the notCarpathians being the western borders, the notAlps being the southern border, etc.

Sorry about the slow response. It's been a busy week. I'm still recovering from this morning's tennis run after a sleepless night. I'm good for the further propositions you made over Discord @Józefania. And if you've added anything extra to them since then, feel free to post them here too.

Excellent, will do!

Also, I do invite others to consider what parts, if any, they'd like to play in this millennium of feuding between Ebria and Józefania. @Eiffelland, do you think your empire would be willing/interested in occasionally meddling or participating in one side or another? That goes for @The Konderland and @Petits-Pays as well, and really any other powers in the area who are willing to be involved.

"After a millennia of war, a millennia of friendship"
Hopefully many millennia of friendship after a millennium of war ;)

I had a war inside Eiffelland between 1618 and 1648, which was my thirty years war between Catholics and Protestants. Such a war definitely took place, but its timing is not written in stone. After that war, the Eiffellandians had enough of fighting over religion. So I don't think it fought on any side in the Deluge. But maybe the Deluge ended with the Peace of Würzwald? Eiffelland as a Kaiserreich didn't have an overarching capital like nowadays; it could be that the King of Spessart at that moment was also the Kaiser, and because of that Würzwald was the centre of the Kaiserreich at that moment.

For the Great War, my involvement in the Jósefania-Elfriki theatre depends on what was happening west and southwest of me. If that area was calm, it could be that I was supporting Jósefania.

During the Last War, I was fighting with Averin, so I don't think I was involved in the war between Jósefania and Ebria.

As I'm planning on bordering Josepania to the South I guess I am going to see what parts of this shared history Serbovia would reasonably be involved in. I'll formulate the earlier history later, what caught my eye for now was the Great War. It would make for a good reason for the chain of events in domestic Serbovian history that eventually lead to a two-year Civil War resulting in victory for the revolutionary Social-Nationalists.

Serbovia at that time would have been ruled by a military junta and could have joined in on the war on the Ebrian side, aiming to increase its influence and take the Josepanians down by a notch with some great power fantasies in mind. Serbovian attempts to invade Vistulania could be brutally fought to a standstill along those mountain ranges, and eventually unconclusive peace would be signed.

The horrendous casualties inflicted in the war, and the lack of any tangible successes, eventually contribute to the rise of the then-underground Social-Nationalist People's Party as the movement becomes popular among returning disgruntled war veterans. That, in turn, leads to a Serbovian Civil War where the Social-Nationalists prevail over the military junta and other militant opposition movements.

How does this sound like?

Could you go into more detail about what the Peace of Würzwald is? If my assumptions are correct, and it's where peace was negotiated between Jozefania, Ebria, and the Elfriki Federation, then I'm fine with that.

Additionally, with the years you've put up, it could also be that the Thirty Years War in Eiffelland is the immediate precursor to the Deluge, where Jozefania and Ebria initially intervene in the Thirty Years War, Jozefania on the side of the Catholics, Ebria on the side of the Protestants, in the style of France being anti-Hapsburg and supporting the Protestants despite religious differences, and that would better explain how catastrophic the Deluge would've been, where Jozefania's army was already exhausted from the conflict, and Ebria relies on mercenaries to do a majority of the dirty work alongside the Elfriki. In Jozefanie History a majority of the 17th century could honestly be described as the Little Apocalypse, in how horrific all the wars of religion were and how lucky they were to come out the other side more or less unscathed. I invite @Zagora to give his thoughts on this as well.

I'm down for the Great War being pivotal to Serbovia and Jozefania being an antagonist in that regard. It could be that Jozefania had aims to overthrow the military junta and bring them in as a sort of client state and buffer against Ebrian advances, and in fact it could be part of a larger effort on Jozefania's part to become the dominant power amongst the Middle European Slavs. But as you describe, the horrific and brutal war in the mountains led to nothing more than a stalemate, an extremely disappointing and pointless result. The exhaustion following the war allows for no intervention in the overthrow of the junta, and perhaps even some Jozefanie would be happy to see them go in favor of the Social-Nationalists.

Eiffelland being an active supporter and ally of Jozefania in this two-front conflict would be ideal, and better explain why Jozefania was able to come out the other side mostly unscathed, albeit lacking in any real victories beyond lasting peace with immediate neighbors.

Sounds very good to me.

This is also a question you don't have to answer now because, as you've said, you're still working out earlier history, but I'm very curious about Serbovia's geographical presence in northern notItaly. I'm assuming that this will basically be "Migration Period on Turbocharge" with the Germanics more to the north and west, while the Slavs dominate the east and even occasionally take over the Italians (like the Germans did irl from time to time).

Ebria and Jozefania would also be fighting a TON of proxy wars in notItaly, so I imagine Serbovia would be a constant participant (whether it'd even want to be involved or not).

This seems to be a reasonable way to establish why there are Slavs so far South, yeah. My idea was that it was due to the Migration Period and also territorial expansion done from the Middle Ages up until the 1800s, after which the shape and borders of Serbovia would remain relatively stable. I intend to flesh this out later. Also, seems reasonable to assume that Serbovia would be somewhat involved in the Ebrian-Jozefanian proxy conflicts too.

The 1980-1985s war I imagine Serbovia would have ignored and stayed neutral. At this point in Serbovian history my notStalin/notMao (Supreme Leader Jovanovic) has recently died, and his successors are busy with the domestic affairs of internal reforms, rehabilitating the victims of his numerous political purges, purging pro-Jovanovic hardliners from the state structures, repairing international relations after years of international backlash from all the mass killing, etc., etc.

Sounds good, and let me know if I can help pitch ideas to you on the territorial expansion, even at Jozefania's expense.

Switching gears to the modern day, I'd expect that, especially after the Great War, there's a sort of mutual understanding between Jozefania and Serbovia, partly from Slavic brotherhood, and being mutually tolerant of one another (AKA we don't bother you and meddle in your internal affairs, and vice versa). This could take the form in Jozefania of quietly suppressing any Serbovian expat groups that are making too much noise, and could be a source of ongoing diplomatic discussions between the two realms to keep the peace etc.

Actually, that is what I had in mind for the Peace of Würzwald.

I agree with this.
And maybe another idea: My thirty years war could overlap with the Deluge. Maybe it was not from 1618 to 1648, but from 1636 to 1666. In that scenario, Jósefania and Ebria intervening culminated in the Deluge. Then the Peace of Würzwald was not only the peace closed between the countries involved in the Deluge, but also the peace that brought Eiffelland as confederacy back.

Eiffelland being an active supporter and ally of Jozefania in this two-front conflict would be ideal, and better explain why Jozefania was able to come out the other side mostly unscathed, albeit lacking in any real victories beyond lasting peace with immediate neighbors.

Context: "This war" refers to the Great War.
I agree with the idea that Eiffelland fought on Jósefania's side in the Great War. During that war, Eiffelland was heavily bombed by Elfriki. And if indeed that war involved nukes, I can RP that two of my cities were nuked. Nowadays they would have been rebuilt though. Let's say that Wolfratshausen and Rosenheim were nuked.
And eh, for Elfriki bombing me, of course I returned the favour ;) Maybe I invented the V1 and V2 ;)

Nuclear exchange? I'm game. I just have to invent some of my own victimized cities too. :D

Warreic mercenaries, particularly the Brotherhood of the Orange Banner, can/could have been hired in some of the medieval to early modern wars, even up to the point of The Great War (though less sure on the Great War onwards, unless they were small scale 'American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War' style volunteers, but especially during the Deluge.

Sounds reasonable. Serbovia would be game for this especially in the present and recent history, since Serbovian foreign policy is basically "you don't bother us, we won't bother you". Obviously the NKDB takes major effort to try and suppress the Serbovian dissident movements operating abroad, so any quiet collaboration in that regard is much appreciated by the Plesicgrad regime.

As for the Deluge, I am starting to flesh out Serbovian history and I got the idea that the expansion to the borders of notDanube could have possibly taken place at that time if you are okay with it. Basically, a Serbovian monarch sees Józefania under assault and decides to seize upon the opportunity to create a more defensible Northern border for Serbovia to improve its positions against a long-term local rival.

Also, I think we are going to need to come up with a name for that river.

I also got the idea of the western coast of my planned map spot having been made up of a swath of competing smaller principalities up until the 17th century or so. These would've been the Italiote principalities I am referring to in my own history (yet to post). The meddling of Józefanians and possibly others would've kept the Serbovians from scooping them up. Then, seeing the Deluge weakness of the Józefanian crown, Serbovia seizes upon the chance to secure the entire west coast for itself. I'll need to flesh out that idea in my own thread.
