The Munthe Prize
The Munthe Prize, named after Jute scientist and engineer Alfred Munthe, is an international prize awarded in recognition of academic, cultural, or scientific advances. Since 1900, the Munthe Prize is awarded for Chemistry, Peace and Humanity, Literature, Economics, Physics and Engineering, and Medicine. Prizes are limited to being shared by up to 4 individuals. Prizes are awarded in each category.

Nomination and selection process

Nominations are generally sent by academic and government institutions as well as heads of state. Nominated laureates are reviewed and screened. A panel of academic experts from around the world are consulted. A private vote is taken from 81 leading academics and experts in the relevant fields. Nominations are not publicly released until a period of 35 years has elapsed. No appeals may be made on any vote. The vote tallies are delivered to a rotating panel at Holstrup University who verify the vote count under the supervision of the Munthe General Council. The numbers are then handed over to the Munthe Council for affirmation and to notify winners. No nation may receive the award, though institutions are not restricted from nomination in the areas of Peace and Humanity and Medicine.

Nominations in the sciences are given an 18 month grace period. As discoveries can take time to confirm, the Council accepts nominations for achievement stemming from within the 18-month grace period. In other words, any discovery made 18 months prior to the nomination deadline is accepted.

Prize

The Prize primarily consists of the title Laureate (granted by the Munthe General Council and signed by the King of Jutegn as the Council's representative). The Laureate Diploma is presented by the King of Jutegn in the name of the Munthe General Council. Furthermore, silver medals and a small cash purse are presented to winners.

Nomination deadline

All nominations must be presented to the Council no later than September 29th.
