If overdonations amass, they will of course be returned. Otherwise we could buy something neat for the community for it. Like, uh..NSEurope mugs? Everyone loves mugs.
But yeah, good idea Sinhai. There also is a counter in the opening post now.
As I said on IRC I fully support this venture. If the donation was either a couple of months in the future or a couple in the past I would happily donate the difference between what we have and what we need. I don't work over Christmas break though and so money gets really tight. I might have a small amount of money coming into my Paypal account in a few days which would make it convenient for me to make a donation. I plan on making at least a small contributions, ten or twenty dollars, in the near future.
To those that for one reason or another don't want to donate I don't see what you hope to accomplish by complaining. You have every right to bring your concerns up but not in this thread. It's about a technical improvement to the site that it is hoped some of us might chip in for. I don't know what it costs to host the site but I'm sure that Xenn has spent more than this upgrade will cost in time and in money over the years and I think this is a relatively minuscule portion of the burden he is asking us to help with.
First of all, my donation comes with no strings attached, I think it's the least I can do for years of nseurope. That does not mean however that I don't support a more open, transparent and accountable administration and moderation team, and that in general any constructive contribution to the forum I could possibly make depends on how happy I am with the attitude of the administration towards running this forum.
Apart from what I think of the administration, I've had been rather ambivalent towards the update, yesterday I was mostly happy with the skin and the fact that I got to do a monetary contribution to the forum, which I'm eager to do. Any CMS/Blog/Portal features seemed rather unnecessary, and best left disabled. But I've been thinking and I reckon it actually opens up a couple of new possibilities for the improvement of our community apart from the integration with the wiki, which let's face it is such a minor feature that it's not really worth it (we could always have the old [wiki] system which works perfectly as far as I'm concerned.)
No, I think the CMS system could become rather useful to the community. First of all the personal blogs can be used for nation development, OOC updates on roleplay initiatives, and OOC comments on how someone is roleplaying or advice, or simply OOC chit-chat. Alternately, it could simply be a personal blog, some might consider it a waste of bandwidth but the longer people are on the forum, the more likely they are to reply to some post, or to simply create some original content, and in turn generate more activity.
A community portal, apart from displaying the map, administration/moderation team updates and an introduction to guests can include stuff like RP post of the month, or updates from the Council of Nations. Way back in the day (phpBB era) we used to have a portal which included updates from the European Union. The Portal could also feature a sort of objective news channel with a regular update on the major events in Europe, interviewing important leaders, updates on alliance affairs, etc.
Overall I think such initiatives (there are probably loads of other ideas we could come up with) could certainly help this community out, activity is improving and we should help boost this further by these kind of initiatives. It might only take a small dedicated group to do this, but iI do think it could help boost activity from a larger group of semi-regulars and possibly encourage the return of some oldfags (the effect this can have we've seen quite recently). It will also encourage new members to stick around longer and will make any hypothetical recruitment drive more successful (an active community portal alone does that, to be honest).
Generally how these kind of initiatives work and can create broader activity can be seen in the Cooperative Forum, which has been rather active due to the initiatives and ideas of a small dedicated group and the response to these ideas from the broader community.
I'd definitely agree with what Q put out here, especially the ideas about using the portal features.
Remembering phpBB and my first arrival to this site, I think that for the newfag that I was then with scant experience of this RP business, what made NSEurope (or EuropeanAffairs as it was called back then) really stand out from every other regional forum out there (and in 2005 there were a lot) was definitely the first impression when I clicked the link and arrived to the portal site. And yes, it was the one that Q was describing here, and yes, I believe that it could serve to attract new members to our community.
Also, if you have trouble with the link, you can simply go to your paypal interface, go to "send money" and send your donation to donations@ns-europe.eu
While I agree in part with coro I will pledge what I can, which unfortunately isn't as much as I would like to thanks to my student status. Despite the problems we have, this place has been entertaining me for years and I've gotten to know some interesting people through it's threads. A homepage (which also encouraged me to sign up and made it look like more than just another forum) is worth a little debt.
Xenn, I'll send you a PM asking for Überweisung information.
Update: Well, my PayPal account is now up and running, and I expect I'll be able to send my patriotic donation by November 29th, at the latest, so be sure to save about... (/me does the math) €14.95 for my upcoming donation.
I will contribute, or rather, I want to. I will have to get back to you on Friday though, as I am currently fighting managers at work to get off their arse and pay my wages. Which is also the reason why I haven't been on, stressed out, incredibly stressed out, but I want to contribute.
