Aleida frowned as she read a new-to-her issue of the Republican Times. Her ally Baki was now being hunted, and his agency was ontbonden. Discouraging for sure, but her goal was still clear. If Pauwel was to disrupt her plans, she was to disrupt his. Sasame was beautiful country, and as she sipped the coffee in her hotel room, she was not wondering why her brother had set his eyes on this prize. She had arrived some 18 hours ago, and had just been waking up. She had also decided to stay inside do to the audible protests somewhere outside.
The knock she had been waiting for finally came, and she rushed to open the door. She was surprised to see that it was not one, but two! A man and a women in burka, rather then just the latter.
"Who is this?" she asked, more anxiously then defensive.
"No worries my friend, this is my escort. With the Sultan to die, many things are becoming unclear again. Including our place, and I have news for you as well. " The mysterious anonymously robed women stated.
"What?"Aleida asked, as the women threw a large garment her way. "Ok, but what is going on Daniyah?"
"Are you not serving us some of that coffee? It smells very good." The woman, now revealed to be Daniyah, removed her burka and took a seat. Motioning for her male friend to do the same.
Aleida hid her annoyance with the customs of the land as she poured each out some coffee and handed each the furnishings. It took a few agonizing minutes of silence, but eventually Daniyah spoke.
"My husband is dying, may God rest his soul, and there is no other man like him in this land.My Mujahid will go from this world in peace, but I do not think the transition will be so easy for us. That is why I got a hold of you and your friends. If our government goes bankrupt, well then this nation will fall right back into infighting. We must keep the people at work, with hopes of economic success in the future. Otherwise all my love has built will crumble." Daniyah spoke between sips of coffee, obviously speaking of the protests outside.
"I was briefed a little on the current events. I am afraid however, that the details never made it my way." Aleida said, her aggravation had quickly been replaced with curiosity.
"Well the Emir has recently been making his intentions quite clear. His troops patrol these streets at night, and guard the churches and government buildings all day. He claims this is to promote security in a time of uncertainty, but most of us know this is nothing more then an intimidation tactic. Hoping to make most of his competitors step down without even putting up a fight. He has served my lovely husband well in life, but may damn his works in death." Daniyah's stare became distant as she explained the situation. "The other wives and I,well we stand to inherit a lot of physical wealth. My Mujahid had no sons, no male relatives. Nobody. The Emir is extremely angry, but there is little he can do. However, many of my sister wives are not as economically educated as I. We weren't all so lucky to attend the University at Echten."
Aleida remembered fondly the days of her youth. It was true, Daniyah had went to school with Aleida. The two both majored in political science, and the two both had been serious activists. Marches, sit ins, many things all for universal medicine for all Echteners. This had been years ago, and it always struck Aleida as odd that her generation was the first to stand up. She remembered Daniyah too. The woman had been a hardcore feminist. If you had told twenty year old Daniyah that she would be walking around in a burka with a male escort, she probably would have smacked you.
"I am eager to meet your uh, sister wives. Your husband too if he is not to ill."
"I am afraid my Muhajid will probably not be speaking to anybody." Daniyah spoke, a frown on her face. "I know you must think of what a fraud I am. How I use to march in my undergarments, and now only one man has even seen my undergarments in fifteen years! But I have found religion, and me and Muhajid are equals."
"I certainly respect your religion my old friend. But I fail to see the equality."
"It is because you are not from Himyari. I do not hide my face in public in shame or inferiority. I hide my face in public because my husband thinks it is a beautiful thing, and should be as rare as the deserts oasis. I am equal to my husband in that we are two bodies, and one soul. Under God, we are like a strong family soul, one that brought this nation together. I know that it is not the same empowerment as dancing in the streets in our undergarments, but it is empowerment all the same." Daniyah spoke.
"I see, well if you do not mind then friend I will follow your lead." Aleida said as she slipped the burka on. Perhaps Daniyah had gotten through to her, but on the subject of religion, Aleida would rarely admit defeat.
"Right, my friend Abd al Jabbar will drive us. The palace is not too far maybe a forty minute drive. We should arrive before lunch." As the group walked outside, the conversation continued, and Daniyah spoke as the walked down towards the luxurious vehicle. "A few things you should know. The Emir will not be pleased that foreigners are here. Especially not Echtener, as he knows what your kind usually bring."
"Money."Aleida spoke, thinking of the big picture plan in Sasame, and how she did indeed plan on bringing a whole lot of money into the equation.
"Right money. Cold Rijksdaalders, something he currently has none of. We will see what he plans on doing about that. But for now I would rather not force his hand. These protesters do not seem to care."
The two drove towards the palace, as the rest of the city either went about its business or was out yelling in the streets. Certainly a few hundred people were aware of the economic strife that was on its way. The rest would know soon.
