COBHAM ELECTED MINISTER-GENERAL
New Union City, Republic Capital Territory, United Republics
Eglantine Cobham, suitably and expeditiously, has been officially declared elected by the members of the United Republics Assembly to provide leadership for the United Republics Ministry, and become the first Minister-General of the United Republics in the Thaumantic.
Anonymously balloted, Members of the Assembly (MAs) voted overwhelmingly to support the Engellexian Foreign Secretary to be the first to ascend to the position of Minister-General of the United Republics. Her victory achieved the approval of two-hundred-sixty-five MAs, securing a healthy majority required to qualify as an absolute, but below the necessary threshold that would have provided her with a comfortable majority to confidently see through her policies over the next five years within the assembly with little interruption.
Geranium Kray, the Prime Minister of Engellex, has yet to confirm a replacement, with little speculation or rumour as to the likeliest candidate to be the next Foreign Secretary. She did publicly welcome the appointment of Eglantine Cobham, extending assurances and enthusiasm that the next Foreign Secretary will work keenly with the United Republics Ministry.
Following the announcement of the result from New Union City, Eglantine Cobham addressed;- Fellow Citizens of the Thaumantic, as a community our certainty, and the hope it impresses, perseveres through the tragedy of our collective trials. From the West New Angellex Legacy Accords, and the United Republics in the Thaumantic Declaration, in which I thank for preserving the confidence and permanence of the Engellexian community of nations, we have been given the opportunity to decide a new future.
Countless of our fellow Citizens manifested great courage and valorous deeds for our continued being, countless more we have lost. Sharing in the personal loss of people we knew and loved remains our collective oppression, we suffer in the absence of their affection and friendship. Together, we should find community in our want for justice, for retribution, but our community will be found in peace. It will be in peace. For the United Republics is the shared realisation of the difference found in Europe, an unknown age, and to witness it we must, but together we will choose.
Yet, our hard fought peace exists challenged by its own fragility. So, I urge you, Engellex, New Angellex, the Thaumantican Commonwealth, and the Northern Republic, fellow Citizens to join hands together and dedicate ourselves to a shared purpose, as a one people. And as we had succeeded in our past, so we shall succeed again, together facing the unknown.
Cobham’s emergence as the URT leaders’ choice for the post recently had come as a welcome surprise to the new Labour Party, and even to many in the new centre-left Liberal and Radical Benches (LRB) of which she is a member. The Labour Party, organised two years earlier in the Commons Conference of Mamestrafford, is the political group in the United Republics Assembly comprising elected representatives of national-level socialist political parties from all member states of the URT; the LRB, similarly, of liberalism, formed in the same year. Eglantine Cobham, as with the Prime Minister of Engellex, are members of the Digut-Radical Party (Engellex), therefore part of the LRB.
She had been nominated by the leaders of the URT after a month of arduous negotiations despite not being from the Thaumantican Commonwealth, or from the majority new centre-right Second Republican Party (SRP). The Thaumantican Prime Minister James Hoganis had campaigned and secured from Dulwich and Jacoboston the commitment to nominate a Thaumantican candidate, allowing the position to be held by the SRP also.
The agreement through the URT Declaration to locate the institutions of the URT inside New Angellex, alongside the negotiated positioning of a Thaumantican as the first Minister-General, had been seen as important and progressive transfers of power away from the centralism of Dulwich, in support of an emerging capital of federal politics. But opposition to Eglantine Cobham, the Engellexian candidate, appeared to melt away after a series of speeches in the past month in which she demonstrated a wider experience and clarity benefiting an emergent URT. In particular, Cobham stressed the importance of a number of radically progressive social and stimulus policies to be undertaken in the first ten years.
In a speech during the annual Hoglets Mansion Mischief Night Dinner, on Friday, Eglantine Cobham underlined the necessity of the United Republics to be committed to ensuring the realisation of full racial equality within the Thaumantic and an acceleration to those efforts dismantling existing classist structures. She went on to assert the urgency in establishing a political understanding, a pan-United Republics guarantee on a new cultural standard to facilitate support, unhindered and without prejudice, for refugees domestic and European. Urging those at the Mischief Night Dinner to not be so inclined to turn away those in perilous need, but to greet them with doctors and provisions of sustenance.
In policies designed to appeal to the Labour Party, Cobham advocated for the legislating of stimulus to restore economic and social confidence, inclusive of a vast housing programme, and the pledge to establish a committee to thoroughly investigate and weigh the policies, they propose, regulating a minimum wage standard in the URT and its member states.
Heralding a return to turn-of-the-century conservationist politics, and with a nod to those of the Second Republican Party, Eglantine Cobham advocated for an expansionist, far-reaching environmental programme. A green bill is outlined as one of a few fronted measures, offering millions of pounds in investment for the improvement of productivity and environmental sustainability of non-livestock agriculture. Prepared, but not entirely published, is a list for the creation of seventy-five national parks and maritime preserves, coupled with educational policies to foster greater understanding and relevance of the natural world with the United Republic’s institutions of education.
In her biggest appeal to cross-party support, Cobham promised to have the legislative and bureaucratic apparatus assembled and functioning in time for direct elections of both the Minister-General and the United Republics Assembly within ten years.
Prime Minister James Hoganis, of the Thaumantican Commonwealth, and Prime Minister Elkanah Crompton, of the Northern Republic, separately extended public statements of congratulations to Minister-General Eglantine Cobham. They welcomed the coming cooperation between their respective governments and the United Republics Ministry.
From Jacoboston, Prime Minister Prudence Warren publicly invited the new Minister-General to dine with the First Family of New Angellex on her arrival from Engellex, and expressed admiration and keen enthusiasm to working with the Ministry.
