Once a small medical office, the company established by Dr. Luiz Bejar has grown into a medical conglomerate. In addition to selling aspirins in 1972 they began selling medical equipment; in 1992 they received an eight-year contract with the Government to provide high-quality medical supplies to public hospitals. The contract was renewed in 2000 and again in 2009. That same year they announced the creation of EcoMed, a private medical insurer.

No New Contract in 2014

A senior official confirmed the government may not renew its contract with Bejar Medical.

"A two decade-long partnership may come to an end," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. Bejar Medical, owned by Bejar Group, S.A., has a contract to provide medical supplies to public hospitals.

Its contract was renewed in 2009 in addition to a subsidy of 1.2 billion Coeur (720 mn Euro) for offering free, generic prescriptions for the elderly.

Rumors speculate the government will look overseas for cheaper equipment and medical supplies.
