His Holiness Pope Stephanus IV was rushed into a nearby hospital in Tibur earlier today after he fell down the steps at the Vatican. Witnesses reported that the pope tripped down over his own cloak as descending steps at the Capitoline, landing on his head several times. He was found to be unconscious at the scene, and initial reports at the hospital reported that he had suffered several fractures in his skull along with brain swelling.

Cardinal Pietro Accolti, the current Camerlengo who took the position in place of von Haaksbergen last summer, asked the people of Christ's Church to pray for Stephanus's health, and said that the Holy See would cooperate with hospital officials to continually update on the pope's status. At this moment, a friend of the pope has been sent in case the sacrament of unction is required.

Camerlengo to the Holy See

On behalf of the Great Danish people and His Danic Majesty's Government, we wish to extend our great sympathies to His Holiness the Pope and we eagerly await the complete restoration of the good health and well being of His Holiness as he continues to provide the spiritual and totemic leadership for the community of faithful Tiburan Catholics throughout our Realm and throughout the entire world.

Upon his hopeful return to health, His Majesty's Danic Government invites His Holiness to grace our shores and visit us once again.

The State Visit of His Danic Majesty The King Hans Gustav III and Her Danic Majesty Queen Consort Birgitte to the Holy See in 2002 was a momentous event that inextricably brought both the Kingdom and the Holy See together in a bond of friendship.

I have been asked by both His Majesty Grand Duke Eldizio I and Prime Minister Gaetano Merlino to send the concerns of the Grand Duchy to those at the Capitoline regarding the health of his holiness, Pope Stephanus IV. The hearts and prayers of Tiburan Catholic Potenzans are with him at this moment, wishing for a speedy recovery from his unfortunate accident.

It was reported by personal doctors at about 9:27 PM earlier today that His Holiness Pope Stephanus IV, about twenty minutes after monitors had shown a lack of activity in vital functions, was formerly declared deceased. Camerlengo Accolti declared the news at about 9:45 PM, after taking the Ring of the Fisherman from Stephanus.

The Capitoline has announced that the Rite of Visitation will take place between Friday, June 1, and the following Monday, June 4, at St. Peter's Basilica. It will be made open to the public and all visitors will be permitted. The Requiem Mass will be held on Tuesday, June 5, again with all visitors welcomed.

While the sede vecante continues, the papal election is tentatively scheduled by Cardinal Accolti for June 18 - while tradition usually calls for fifteen days after the death of the pope for an election to be held, it has been decided for the likewise traditional twenty days to allow the elector cardinals across the world to attend. The College of Cardinals will be lodged at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, then will meet at the Sistine Chapel for the conclave.

We are saddened by the fact that a real model for this world has left us. Diagists say, "There shouldn't be sadness when one dies, as death is the beginning of another journey", but for him being a Christian we will simply say, that he is in a better place and that he has showed us a path of humility on which we should all go.

The sudden passing of His Holiness the Pope Stephanus, of His name the Fourth, Bishop of Tibur etc etc, is a shocking and shaking move that unfortunately leaves the Holy Catholic Church at a great loss. His Holiness, a man still young and but a mortal sinner who directed His herd like a shepherd at the hands of God, is now at the hands of the Almighty. His ideals and actions, however, will never be forgotten and forever be remembered.

In full accordance to the Imperial custom and tradition, I shall personally represent the Empire, the Reichstag, my Realms and my House in His funeral, in my unitary capacity as Wieserreicher Emperor, President of the Reichstag, King and Prince-Elector of Swabia, Archduke of Saxony, Margrave of Saxe-Einsiedeln and Count of Thießen.

The other Sovereign Houses of the Reich, including but not being limited to the Electoral Houses of Braunschweig, Mecklenburg, Schaumburg and Thuringia and the Princely Houses of Babelfisch, Croÿ, Schwarzenberg and Metternich-Winneburg-Beilstein; the Principality of Ascheburg; the Sovereign Military Teutonic Order of Saint Adrian of Nicomedia and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of the Silverless Saints Cosmas and Damian; various non-sovereign Houses and families; and many of the Faithful of Wieserreich have informed me that they shall escort me in this, either through their Lords or through appointed representatives.

May God have mercy on His soul.

Signed,

Friedrich Wilhlem II

His Danic Majesty's Government expresses its deep sadness, regret and condolences upon the news of the passing of His Holiness.

A man of truly great international stature, a respected titan among the world's leaders, an eminent shepherd to the flock of the worldwide Catholic diaspora, and an inspiration to all peoples regardless of affiliation of faith, his passing is mourned by the Great Danes across the widely dispersed realm.

His Danic Majesty King Hans Gustav III and Her Danic Majesty the Queen Consort express their sadness at this news, His Holiness regarded as a close personal friend of Their Majesties and as a fellow head of state.

Their Majesties indicate their wish to be present at the Visitation on behalf of all the Great Danes accompanied by His Danic Majesty's Statsminister representing His government, Hr. Schneider-Krogsgaard.

Both His Majesty and His government pledge to be of assistance to the Holy See if it so required in the eternal bond between the See and the Kingdom.

Following the end of the Rite of Visitation yesterday, Pope Stephanus IV was laid to rest in the Requiem Mass, led by Engellexic (formerly Montelimarese) Cardinal Jean Louis Rochambeau. It was held at St. Peter's Basilica, with the public initially locked out and no one allowed in save for the College of Cardinals, but finally with the doors opened for the public to attend. The procession opened with the traditional Regina Coeli chant, followed by the liturgy proper, and then Cardinal Rochambeau led the Rite of Final Commendation and Farewell. Camerlengo Cardinal Accolti led the Rite of Internment after the Papal Gentlemen had carried Stephanus's body to his simple tomb, where he would lay in his cypress casket. Across the Tiburan Catholic world and in the many rites in communion with the Holy See, memorial services were held in honor of the pope's memory, with hundreds of millions reporting to have watched the funeral on television and the internet. The Novemdiales, or nine days of mourning, has likewise begun.

The sede vecante still continues, but Camerlengo Accolti still plans to go ahead with the conclave on June 18.

OOC: If you still want to post in the visitation thread, feel free to do so - just remember it would have to take place before the requiem mass, for obvious reasons.

The sede vecante appears to, for the time, still continuing, as black smoke arose before the people in St. Peter's Square at Capitoline City, signifying that the conclave had not yet reached a conclusive vote. Thousands are gathered in the square praying and chanting, eagerly awaiting news of who the next pope will be.

For the first time, video of the smoke is available on webcam, courtesy the Capitoline's website.

Not long after the first vote, as thousands waited in St. Peter's Square, a cry was heard and all saw that white smoke was now rising up to the heavens, signifying that a new pope had been elected. This was followed by the expected cry of the Senior Cardinal Deacon, who came out on the main balcony and declared:

"I announce to you a great joy: Habemus Papam! The Most Eminent and Most Reverend Lord, Lord Paul, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Mayer, who takes to himself the name Martin VI."

Pope Martin VI appeared soon afterward in full regalia, to give his people his first blessing as Holy Father. As Cardinal Paul Mayer, the Holy Father was believed to be a staunch conservative, especially in matters of social issues, and a great defender of the Church's doctrines abroad, and therefore we have no doubt that he will serve faithfully as Christ's vicar in the years to come, as many years as God wills him.
