Danish Diplomat to the Cantigians

::DANISH AMBASSADOR TO CANTIGNIA::
T O P S E C R E T

This is information straight from the higher ups in Parliament. I don't agree with the policy, and I feel someone has to hear this to set it straight, or get it out. Things are not going well at home, and that is all I can say on that point. I can be killed for this communication and for that I'd like to be granted amnesty to your nation.

The Danes are looking to sell the Faroe to the Mezhists. This is not right, we should not be brokering Danish peoples lives on the health of the governments coffers.

Please respond.

In what used to house the King of Denmark, the delegation from the Mezhist Union gather around to read the final draft of the document they'd be signing. Everyone had agreed to the preliminary negotiations, and so all that was left was to make the agreement final. Prime Minister Viktor Albin Hansen smiled as he handed the draft to the Mezhists. He was genuinely happy. He could end the Faroe discussions that he knew Occidentia was placing on the Danes when they were in no position to defend them. Additionally, he could strengthen ties with what seemed to be one of the Danes best allies. Far more changes were to come for the Danish people, he knew the war would end soon and he had immense plans for the conclusion.

Treaty of Christiansborg
Concerning the sale and lease of the Yujiner holding of Ningwei and the Faroe Island

1. The sale of Ningwei is to be sold for the current market value in accordance to the appreciation of the value of the assets placed in Ningwei since the Danish Crown leased the region in 1923. The term remains as per the requires granted by the Yujiner Imperial Government, until 2023.

2. The lease of the Danish Island of Faroe to the Mezhist Union.
  • For three times the asking of Ningwei, the Faroe Island will be leased to the Mezhists for a term of fifty (50) years.
  • Upon conclusion of the term, the Mezhist Union has the ability to annex the Southern majority of the island, leaving only the small northern port town of Hokkerup to the Danish Government or any successor state of the Danish Government on January 1st, 2003. The Danish Navy (or successive Naval force) may dock for maintenance and resupply in this town during the duration of the lease; however, they will not be based there. Hokkerup will be made available to Danish nationals for improvements for the expansion of Danish military capacity in tandem with Mezhist military capacity.
  • The Mezhist outright purchase will be made possible via an agreed to sum after the terms have ended. If a sum cannot be agreed to, the Mezhist Union will maintain its lease for another five years at a 25% cost + inflationary rates.
  • The Mezhist Union has the option to lease 75% of the Danish Westerly Navy. This is composed of three aircraft carriers, and six battleships, plus their support craft. This lease will be done for the same term as the original lease of Faroe Island, but cannot be extended beyond the fifty (50) year date. In 2003, all naval assets, in both good and poor service will be returned to the Government of Denmark, or the Successor State to the Government of Denmark. Ships lost in combat must be announced to the Danish Government, the wreckage of the ship being the property of the Danish Government to be retrieved by the Mezhist Union, or a 50% of the ship's value repaid to the Danish Government before 2028.
These terms are agreed to by the Government of Denmark and the Mezhist Union in secret, with only news of the territorial exchange allowed to be made by the Mezhist Union upon their desire.

The Danish Ambassador arrived at the doorstep of the University he was requested to meet at. He was hoping to god it wasn't the Danes themselves who had told him to go there. There had been rumors that several government employees had been murdered for disobedience to the new regime. Contrary to what any Danish Government authority had been saying, massive crackdowns and citizen arrests of both Danish speaking and German speaking peoples were going on.

He knocked on the door late at night as instructed. He hoped that a friendly face would answer.

Deputy Nadzorca Cyryl Deren and his attaché carefully examined the document in question. It would finalise the sale of Ningwei, and the lease of Faroe - along with most of its fleet, of course - to the Mezhist Union. Upon noting all the details, it was clear that the Treaty of Christiansborg was a win-win. The Danish government would receive the relief that it required, from one of its long-time close allies, of course, and be able to downsize their concern with the Faroe Question that seemed to be harassing them with Occidentan flak. The Union, meanwhile, would receive holdings in both the Far East, and Occidenta itself.

The New World had long been a sore spot for the Swieczieman Imperium, when their attempts to establish a colony on the east coast of Occidenta in the mid-1600's failed spectacularly because of the Kozak Deluge. Any would-be colonists who were just getting settled, or merely on the way there, were called back home to fight for the Imperium's survival. In the wake of this crisis, the prospect of colonization was abandoned entirely, and the meagre settlements that had been put up were soon swallowed up by the forests of Occidenta.

It was not until Cezar Feliks' drive for modernization that the idea of colonization sprang up again, at which point all the strategic points had already been taken by other powers. Grudgingly, the Halls of Giecz decided that trying to do so again was pointless. But now, an opportunity had presented itself, and it was no surprise that the successor state to the Swieczieman Imperium would continue to hold its predecessor's little ambitions. Sure, they would receive flak from the liberated colonies in the west, especially from that impregnable bastion of Republican Imperialism Sylvania, but they would no doubt find a way around these problems.

If anything, they were more than happy to take the burden of the Faroe Question off of their Danish allies. And needless to say, of course, that Ningwei would be an excellent staging ground for the Mezhist campaign in Yujin. If the Empire survived this civil war, the port city would serve as one of several Mezhist developments that would expand their influence in the Far East.

With a nod of approval, Deren led the Mezhist delegation in signing the treaty. This was soon followed by Secretary of State Boleslaw Gorski, from Lower Swiecziema. Both of them signed with the authority of their superiors, who were unavailable at the moment due to pressing matters, but certainly trusted them enough to give authorisation to close the deal at their own discretion. These were followed by the other important people in the Union. Soon enough, it was done, and the sale was official.

"We appreciate the trust that the Danish government is giving us with regards to these territories," Deren started, "And we are proud to be able to assist our good friends in this time of need. Mr. Hansen, you can be assured that the freighters with the gold are on the way, and should arrive soon enough."

University of Vesper

The large Gothic doors to the University creaked open slowly to reveal Professor Thomas Lynn, the man who had responded via telegram, and two men in dress uniforms on either side. Before the Professor could reach up his hand to greet the diplomat two other men, these ones dressed in Engellexic summer uniforms, shoved the diplomat harshly in to the University so they could hastily slam the doors back shut.

"I'm afraid Cantigian independence is as it was - when you to speak to one of us expect Montelimar, or now Great Engellex to be listening in as well." Lynn remarked, eying the Engellexic officer to his right, "Either way faithful brothers, I think this is where I shall take my leave!" he finished with a bow. Yet another Engellexic soldier followed the Professor down an unlit corridor towards his office, boots echoing heavily long after they had vanished out of sight.

"We contacted them, actually" one of the Engellexic uniform wearing men said in a Cantigian accent, "Our Duchy, robust as it is, could not do much with your information without a strong ally or two to verify it publicly" the man said in a matter-of-fact tone. "This is where the Empire swoops in," the Engellexic sounding counterpart added smugly, "By order of Field Marshal Tritton, Administrator of Engellexic Occupied Vesper, I declare you to be a ward of the Empire. You will be afforded food, water, and quarter until it is deemed safe to release you to your own recognizance . ." he said as the remaining soldiers closed in around them.

"Your next stop is Mercy Medical Hospital," the Cantigian said, "after a late night at the office, working diligently and loyally of course, you were the victim of a hit and run".

Metropolitan Vesper,
Mercy Medical Hospital

Stripped of his clothing and personal effects, the diplomat was eased on to a hospital bed in an empty corner of the hospital reserved for Engellexic soldiers, officers, and politicians. "Sign this, sir" a uniformed medic half-asked or half-ordered, "It seems that you've left your papers at home and this authorizes us to search and seize the relevant identification documents to best treat you this evening".

"This actually gives you a degree of plausible deniability if you would rather not live the rest of your life as a traitor to your country," the Engellexic Officer suggested, "This is where you tell us how we can verify the claims you've made, let's see . . " he said, peering down at a copy of the whistle-blower's telegram. "Yes, right here: 'The Danes are looking to sell the Faroe to the Mezhists', and then there is this and that about your moral objection, right-o, let's get to your evidence if you will".
