'Grand Old Man' Jensen to lead Danes at Montelimar peace conference
You must be registered for see images

The popular former Statsminister Edvard Poul Jensen often called the 'father of the nation'

The former Social Democrat Statsminister Edvard Poul Jensen will lead the Danish state and joint Germanian League presence in the Montelimar peace conference, the government has announced.

The announcement has been welcomed from all sides of the political divide and is likely to take the sting out from the opposition party who have voiced their criticism of the government's Montelimar strategy as they get one of their own to take centre stage in the important post-war settlement of neighbouring Engellex-Montelimar.

Jensen, the predecessor to the current Statsminister Jens Peder Hillerød, was head of government for 7 years until he stood down as both leader of the Social Democrats and the Statsministership and remains widely popular in broad swathes of Danish society and also commanding rare respect amongst the political class. Variously described as a 'father of the nation', 'moral compass', 'a political titan', 'a man of stolid conscience' and an 'all round good egg' and with the ability to bring all sides together for the common good, he played a crucial role in steering the country out of isolationism and promoting civic society. Jensen remains the most popular politician in Danmark with many Danes saying that if it were not for the fact the country is headed by a monarch, he would be their first choice as a Danish president.

The presence of Jensen is being seen as a signal of the astuteness of the Statsminister in that, whilst he has skilfully steered a moderate course between all interested nations over the conflict and it's fall-out, Jensen has the nous and clout to knock heads together in good faith whilst not being part of the current government and position the country into an important role representing the Germanian League. Unusually, the government of the day is effectively stepping out of the lime-light and, so trusted is Jensen, allowing the former Statsminister to guide the conference and represent the country and be one of the two Germanian League figures. Jensen, whilst aware of the Danish government's position and the thrust of the Germanian League governments, will be largely left to his own brief in the conference.

Hillerød said: "This, the best thing we have to being a genuine leader of the whole nation outside the King, the greatest former leader in modern times, will be centre stage in these talks. I believe he will have the confidence of all parties in the conference in efforts to strike an amicable and lasting settlement in Engellex-Montelimar. Mr Jensen commands respect from all sides."

Although standing down from front line politics, Jensen is widely respected for his keenly honed attentae, rarely out of step with the currents of opinion. However, he is also not seen as a slave to fickle opinion, being firmly rooted in moral principles, and has often been an alternative political leader for Danes often at odds and dissatisfied with politicians in Christiansborg. He is also rare for former leaders in being approachable and down-to-earth, at ease amongst the political class as he would be in a local bar or market with ordinary people in society (he can count among his friends people from as wide a range as musicians to dock-yard workers), and is highly regarded across all age divides. And unlike most politicos, he is not typecast by his former role, or seen with cynicism having active interests in the arts, science, music and literature.

IN BRIEF

»Refugee numbers reach the 65,000 mark as Montelimarians continue to escape the conflict in Engellex-Montelimar. Danske Røde Kors also publishes a 1500 page report documenting around 375 allegations of atrocities committed by the Engellex military in Montelimar. Allegations included ethnic cleansing, genocide, rape, mutilation, starvation, and the murder of children. The government has said that it needs time to study the report but it is taking the allegations "with utmost concern".

»The Republic of Kyiv declines invitations of involvement in the Germanian League oil pipeline citing Wiesan intransigence and advocating a re-balancing of the league in the favour of the Kingdom of Franken. Udenrigsminister Westerveld, currently attending an international maritime security conference in Touzen said: "It is the right of Kyiv to decline and it is a decision that we respect. Needless to say, for the common advantage to apply to Kyiv and Germania, we will advocate alternative methods to reach out to our near neighbours and we also hope that events may transpire to make Germano-Kyivan cooperation more fruitful but this will take real compromises - from all sides. Then, I believe it is possible to work together in the right conditions on a level of true equality with all member states of the League".

»The blunt talking Vice-Statsminister, Svend Fulk brushed off Lesser Sarmatian claims to have nationalised Danish assets in pan-Slavist support of Kyiv's decision not to partake of the Germanian League oil project as a "joke" and "immature". The Office of the Statsminister, in contrast, called the decision "regrettable".

»Helga von Stromsgaard, the only candidate so far for the leadership of the leftist Ny Venstre unveils her plan for leading the party and government. She has called for a reform of the party constitution diffusing power amongst members, grass-roots democracy, but a two year concentration of executive power in the leader in order to see through the reforms. Propositions for the country include the installation of a 'Republic of the People', nationalisation of all industry, investment in the public sector and revival of decimated industries, immediate withdrawal from the Germanian League, and sequestration of private company assets.

»The latest developments in Jurzan should be viewed with 'caution but hope' following the concentration of power towards Supreme Chancellor Karimi following internal political conflict said the Udenrigsministeriet in a press release. "It is still too early to tell how the situation will transpire and we acknowledge the circumscribed Jurzani dynamics involved in this development. We hope that Chancellor Karimi's actions are a temporary measure and call on Jurzan to restore democracy as soon as possible".

»Air and naval patrols of the northern Long Sea have commenced in order to contribute to monitoring of the increasingly fractious region, including by the Schackenborg 410 early warning and control aircraft. The Defence Minister said he hoped the country to make it's own commitment to Long Sea security alongside other neighbouring maritime states.

»Rikard Magnussen, the Minister for Commerce, says that he is concerned at the 'sluggish response' to the Germanian League oil and gas pipeline initiative and that a reliable and cheap source is essential if Danmark is to fill the void in it's increasing demands for resources as it's economy continues to grow. Welcoming the Jurzani proposal, the minister said he expected the net to be cast wider in a search for reliable sources and that he had concerns about Jurzani sources given the political situation there, but the impetus existed for an 'urgent and sensible policy'.

»Udenrigsministeriet states that resettlement of Montelimarian refugees was on a 'purely voluntary basis' by the refugees concerned and not forced repatriation and a response to the extreme pressures the Danish had faced in dealing with the influx. The Danes had provided DKR 3m in aid to the Europaland government to help in the resettlement, the statement also said.

»"Danmark needs to get more battle experience under it's belt", claims General Bromby in a newspaper interview for Den Verden i Dag and that involvement in conflict "wouldn't do any harm" and that "we need to flex our muscle". The Forsvarsministeriet has called the general in to clarify his remarks.

»The Midtenland Canal opens seeing the linking of the Rhine river to the Almindeligt river systems linking to the Danmark Sound and the Lorrainian Gulf. It will mean easier access for industrial barges from the east of the country to the west coast and improved trade from Germanian League nations, especially Wendmark, Wiese and northern Eiffelland.

»Allegations appear in the downmarket journal Hej! that the Crown Prince has been spotted leaving the home of Fabritius de Tengnagel, the 20 year old son of a wealthy financier and well known on the 'posh' gay scene, on a regular basis over the past 8 months fuelling speculation of a relationship. Karlskrona Slot refused to comment.

»The King, accompanied by the royal family, sailed in a grand procession from the Frederikshavn naval base on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog accompanied by a huge flotilla of over half of the Royal Danish Navy as part of the grand finale of the King's reign. An estimated 12 million people are expected to line the coast as the flotilla makes it's journey south through the Danmark Sound. Tabloid journalist, Per Bille, said "this is a great send off for a much-loved monarch and the grandest of it's kind for over 100 years". With typical tongue in cheek humour he said "with about 60% of the navy in one place we could very easily blitzkreig Fontaine-Harcourt!".

»The Regent of Havenshire, Samuel Garland, has stoked interest in initiating connections between Princess Rebecca of Havenshire and HKH The Crown Prince of Danmark. The Secretariat of the Crown Prince has said Prince Sweyn would be "delighted" to accompany the Princess to a ball expected to be held in Franken. However, observers claim that there is pressure on the Crown Prince to marry and secure the Danish succession even though there are strong rumours that he is homosexual. Royal biographer, Pippa Lindgaard, says: "I feel sorry for the Crown Prince. He is under tremendous pressure and expectations to marry but deep down I believe his heart lies somewhere else. This must be a torture for the man who is sensitive and cultured by nature, and he must be quite sad at the prospect at having to be forced to marry when he probably doesn't want to".

»The Energy Department and Commerce Department in separate statements say that the country needs to actively consider alternatives to ensure it's energy security and that it's economic recovery cannot be placed under strain due to "geo-political posturing". The Commerce Department: "whatever policy transpires must ultimately be in our own national interest and strategies that hinder recovery and sovereignty must be questioned".

»Defence Department announces it is to review it's procurement by examining foreign markets. The preference is to purchase Germanian League merchandise but "options are being kept open".

»The National Arboretum is officially opened by HM Queen Birgitte. The 70,000 sq metre and 200 metre tall temperature-controlled glass and steel structure houses botanical pieces from all over Europe, each in their own specially controlled micro-climate. The arboretum is the largest of it's kind in Europe and it already has over 5,000 specimens and an expanding collection.

»Preparations are under-way for the hosting of the crucial post-war conference over Montelimar to be held in the illustrious Kronsborg Slot. It is expected that the delegations will be greeted at a formal reception and photo-call with HM King Hans Gustav III prior to the political business at Kronsborg. Former Statsminister Edvard Poul Jensen who will preside over the conference between Great Engellex, Montelimar, the European Defence Federation, Germanian League (of which he will be one of two representatives, the other from Eiffelland) and associated observers, has indicated he expects to see a long-lasting, fair and amicable settlement between all parties. The Danish government will not be formally represented in the conference but vicariously through Herr Jensen.

»The Foreign Office has announced that it is placing immediate economic sanctions upon Watustan and freezing all it's assets held in the country for it's gross violation of human rights in relation to homosexuals, but fell short of expelling it's ambassador. The Foreign Office said the government of Watustan was acting in a 'dispicable' manner and an official said that the Watu ambassador had been "given an earful" by a "livid" Foreign Minister.

»Danolie Smba and Cisalpinske Smba launch their own joint-bid to expand oil and petroleum routes in Germania as part of the GL-wide competition. The Energy Minister said he welcomed the venture by Danmark's two largest oil and gas companies and welcomed other offers from further afield, though he said the final arbiter would be the government on issues of national energy security and that the government had been in wide-ranging talks with numerous exporters.

»Europaland announces increased presence in the Great Sea in reaction to increasing maritime volatility. The Foreign Minister said he understood concerns which mirrored it's own and urged Europaland to attend the Maritime Security conference in Touzen.

OPINION

The vultures are right: Montelimar neutrality is a failure
Sophia Krause-Kjær

If the Statsminister is able to play the old game of 'Twister' as well as he excels in eye-watering contortions over foreign policy, he would no doubt be a grand master. The head of government and his colleagues supposedly stand for tenets such as human rights, freedom, and justice for people in the wider world but in recent times you'd be forgiven if you thought otherwise. We have an example par excellence in Montelimar - right on our doorstep, right under our noses - you'd expect the government to have said something quite definitive about the whole issue wouldn't you? Well, you'd be wrong. Ministerial defence of these great beliefs has been non-existant as government engages in a diplomatic tight-rope-walk-cum-juggling-act being nice to the Queen Empress whilst she plays in her Montelimarian playground in the name of neutrality and dutifully bending over only to get well and truly shafted.

The statecraft woven by Herr Hillerød and His Majesty's government means it is seen as the moderate of the Germanian League and in the wider region - which it is compared to most. If it were left to some nearby states there could quite possibly have been some war by now or, at the least, some sort of jabbing at each others eyes with pointed sticks, no doubt. Thus far it has remained at the catty words stage - so credit where credit is due and no throwing out the baby with the bathing water. However the government has largely been a loser in this policy as it seems that Hillerød does most of the running - squeezed between a megalomanical Engellexic regime and hawkish elements within Germania (including increasingly within Danmark) - straining the concept of neutrality to it's limits and exhausting the patience of those who support the principle by the latest report of some Engellexian triumphalist act in Montelimar, whilst Dulwich carries on regardless as if nothing happened with a highfalutin air of winner-takes-all entitlement. You only have to look to their recent possessiveness over the Great Sea (which they increasingly see their as their own domain) to see how being neutral to this tunnel-visioned many-headed hydra has failed. The incident is quite telling - watch this space.

The government seems to have a warped understanding of it's position and seems to have forgetten (or has willfully refused to acknowledge) that it has a responsibility to speak 'truth to power', so to say. It has unwittingly provided cover for the Engellexian regime as it has sought fit to rape and pillage an independent state (albeit one that was erroneously led) and march unembarrassed as Montelimarians are screwed out of house and home. Christiansborg's response was to hand-wring and sit on the fence allowing now 75,000 Montelimarian refugees cross it's borders but do nothing - not publicly condemn Great Engellex and hold them to account, not militarily intervene and put the ball in their court, not even offer public condolence to the Valmy government - the legitimate government, I might add - as Engellex's barbarians plundered the Francophone kingdom. Yet even this refugee exodus and resulting humanitarian effort was hardly acknowledged by the Engellexians who barely paid a morsel of attention and zero substantive recognition this was their own doing, instead sticking their fingers in their ears and covering their eyes and refusing to step up to the mess they had caused whilst Hillerød cleaned up for them like a lap-dog. There's a good boy.

Then Danske Røde Kors published a report directly linking Engellexic soliders to 375 Montelimarian atrocities including rape, murder (including of children), genocide and mutilation - as if plucked from the annals of the Dark Ages. This was backed by an independent Wendmarker report into similar allegations. But the reactions of the two governments are poles apart. What did the Wendmarkers do? They stood by their principles and nailed their colours to the mast. What did the Danes do? Nothing - they are still currently sitting on the report probably hoping it will be forgotten and will go away - all for preserving an increasingly busted flush of a foreign policy. If ever the Queen Empress of Engellex and her henchmen should ever appear in a dock - as they surely should - so should Herr Hillerød for being a dimwit on duty. Somehow, though, I doubt this will ever happen.

In short, Hillerød: wake up and smell the coffee - the "vultures" circling above you (as one of the Statsminister's party described critics of his Montelimar policy) were right afterall. Rings are being run around you and Dulwich is laughing at you. You need to stop pussy-footing around tyrants and condemn the condemnable, defend time-honoured civilised values, and help the weak and simply tell it as it is and hopefully drag the anaolgue Engellex into the age of digital Europe. Until then, there is no hope for you or your policy, for Montelimarians, for Engellexians, nor for Germania and the wider world.

Statsminister in Kyiv energy security and arms agreement
You must be registered for see images

The Statsminister arriving in Kyiv yesterday

Statsminister Jens Peder Hillerød has held key high-level bilateral talks with the Kyivan Secretary-General of the Tsentralna Rada, Lilia Kozak, and has signed an agreement with Kyiv for a joint Polascianan-Danish oil and gas pipeline and a military procurement deal, as he seeks to build economic bridges and in an attempt to calm a growing impasse between the Kyivan regime and the Germanian League over oil and gas pipelines.

The agreement follows Danish concerns that their attempts to generate large-scale overseas markets have stalled and that the threat of a Kyivan blockade of valuable oil and gas exports and revenue may cause further harm and hamper growth. The talks are also being seen as a part of the government's policy to radically diversify export and import markets outside the Germanian League, which is currently Danmark's most important trade partner.

In the first head of government visit by a Danish Statsminister to Kyiv for some years, the two leaders sealed an agreement over a oil and gas pipeline routes which is due to be built jointly by Polasciana and Danmark, as well as a smorgasbord of Kyivan arms sales including heavy artillery and air-to-air missiles. Also discussed was a liberation of trading markets between the two countries. Indications are that there is a clear desire by Christiansborg to purchase Kyivan military hardware as part of a diversification in procurement announced some months earlier.

The question of oil and gas pipelines have become a hot topic recently and has induced growing tensions between the oil-rich giant Kyiv and the five-nation Germanian League due to disputes over issues such as regulation, national legal jurisdiction, pricing, routes, and pipeline ownership. The Germanian League is currently in the process of encouraging offers from oil producing states across Europe with the Himyarian state of Jurzan and Europaland being the only contenders thus far. Also mooted are proposals from Talemantros which has thus far declined to make an offer to the League initiative. The government which has backed the pan-League competition, open to all European producers, has nevertheless been privately alarmed at rumblings of discontent from Kyiv amid the failure of the joint Kyivan-Talemantrine DVI and Rus Petrol plan to gain GL approval, and has questioned the efficacy of the League's reliance upon insecure oil and gas sources especially from an instable Jurzan and erratic Europaland and the long term implications upon energy security. The government has said however it will abide with the constituent states of the Germanian League in achieving a League-wide consensus on an oil and gas project, seeing the Kyivan deal as part of the wider League network.

The Statsminister said he was pleased with the deal he had secured and affirmed his stance on Kyivan re-engagement with the League: "We have had very successful talks with the Secretary-General and we have found a great deal of common ground on which to progress in a range of areas. The Secretary-General has been very open to negotiation and I believe we have a good relationship together. I believe that the offer proposed by Talemantros and Kyiv has a great deal to be considered and is a much more reliable source of long-term energy security with less risk especially given the current volatility of the Long Sea, though in an independent initiative, I have found it necessary to secure Danish energy security".

Asked whether he thought it compromised the League competition, the Statsminister was assuring: "I don't see how it can be. This is an independent plan exercised by a sovereign state and whilst it secures our own energy and security needs, I see it as a part of the jigsaw of the wider League initiative which I am fully behind. It is in the interests of all our partners to ensure energy security and it is in our interests, indeed it is our aspiration, that it be so."

The oil and gas deal is likely to be beneficial for the Danish economy as it has secured below market-rate price oil and gas supplies with the nation's economy due to profit from the deal. The news of the announcement boosted the Danske Borse indicating market confidence in the deal. The Chief Economist at Danske Bank welcomed the move: "The Statsminister has secured the economy by taking a sensible decision which will boost confidence and the trickle-down effect will be great. I think the Statsminister has been very wise in securing this deal which means the best of both worlds for the country in benefiting from the Kyivan energy deal and also as a member of the Germanian League. It also leaves the door open to facilitating relations in Gallia and beyond".

»Social Democrats call upon the government to beef up military presence in the Great Sea region to secure western trade routes, working with local nations, to "thwart expansionist powers in lieu of a international agreement". Thus far only three frigates have been sent but indications are that the presence could be increased significantly depending on events as they unfold. Deputy Foreign Minister said "we shall remain neutral at present but will increase forces if the situation requires it and if there is a change in the 'wind direction'".

»Leader of the Danish Greens, Sophia Krause-Kjær, criticises the government's signing of an oil and gas deal with Kyiv citing the government's "woeful performance" on renewable energy sources. The government dismissed the criticism saying that renewable sources have increased as a percentage of total energy production and consumption now equalling 10%.

»Head of the Danish Airforce, Air Chief Marshall Mikkel Larsen retires following 9 years in the role. The Statsminister's Office announced that he could be replaced by Henning Toft Tørfisk who will be elevated to the position of Air Chief Marshall. Analysts detect a common theme in the promotion of activist and right-wing military leaders.

»Helga von Stromsgaard, the front-running candidate as new leader of the leftist Ny Venstre party calls on Carentania to do more to tackle the "imperialist menace" of Great Engellex and lamented that it had had "it's eye off the ball because of internal wranglings within the RDTO" and had become "a little bit too inert". Adding that she admired the example set by Carentania, she said that "Germania, Gallia and beyond shouldn't be forgotten in favour of naval gazing".

»The Defence Ministry announces it will not be withdrawing its naval presence from the Cambrian Strait and the wider Great Sea region 'for the time being' despite an apparent draw-down of Europaland's navy in the region. The Defence Ministry stated that 'it would be premature to withdraw the observational presence at the current time' and that if circumstances alter causing threats to Danish shipping and trade 'options for expanding Danish naval presence would be explored'. The ministry also stated that it would be seeking direct talks with Breotonia and Havenshire over Great Sea security.

»Crown Prince Sweyn is invested with the titles of Grand Cross of the Order of the Elephant, Knight Marshall of the Order of Sudreyjar, and Lord Defender of All the Swabians. Traditionally the titles are bequeathed upon accession but a rare exception has been made ahead of the impending coronation.

»Human rights groups criticise the government for it's 'slow response' to the Danske Røde Kors documentation of Engellexian atrocities in Montelimar and urge 'urgent attention' to the detailed report. Meanwhile, representatives of the newly-formed Front Nationale pour Montelimar Libre (National Front for Free Montelimar) or FNML denounce the actions of Great Engellex and protest outside the Engellex Embassy, echoing similar manifestations in Wendmark, waving the Montelimarian flag and singing the National Anthem of Montelimar and chanting "Vive le Roi! Vive le Peuple! Vive la Danemark! Vive le Montelimar Libre!".

»The Defence Ministry announces the first installment of weapons procured from the Republic of Kyiv as part of its 'Diversification of Foreign Military Procurement' initiative. The inventory includes 75 R-83 Universal Supersonic Cruise Missiles, 68 R-110 Operation-Tactical Ballistic Missiles, 112 Plumbata Guided Missiles, and 35 Type-94 Main Battle Tanks. The ministry announces further purchases from Kyiv and elsewhere (including within the Germanian League) would be announced.

Vice Statsminster: Montelimar royal family should be offered Danish asylum
You must be registered for see images

Vice Statsminister Svend Fulk

Vice Statsminister Fulk has said he believes that the Montelimar royal family should be offered asylum and protection as part of a peace settlement as the Kronborg Summit gathers pace in Christiansborg.

In a rare intervention the Vice Statsminister, leader of the Agrarian Party which is the junior party in the governing coalition, claimed that the the offer of Danish asylum to the Montelimarian king and royal family may offer a "back door" and "save the dignity" out of an "impossible position" that the King of Montelimar and its royal family face themselves in as Engellexian forces conquer the kingdom.

Whilst preferring a settlement that maintains the Montelimarian monarch as a sovereign monarch, Fulk stated that the nature of unfolding events make it "neigh upon impossible that it is likely" that such an event will transpire as Great Engellex seems "intent on carving up the kingdom into its own spheres of influence and gobbling up the rest".

The public offer is the first such venture by a leading government member and the fact it was made by the Vice Statsminister, the second-most senior elected politician in Danmark, breaks ranks with official policy with likely deep ramifications and a possible rift within the governing coalition. Until now, the government has remained quiet about the fate of the Montelimarian royal family but it is a badly kept secret that many had been calling for an offer to help retain the dignity of the Montelimarian monarch and the Montelimarian monarchy in general.

Recent reports of atrocities committed by Engellexian forces in their progress through Montelimar have alarmed the Danish political establishment and public opinion and the government has struggled to keep a lid on the anger and concern and has battled to retain a course of a 'middle way' with Great Engellex.

The Vice Statsminister said: "Most Danes deplore the actions of Great Engellex which has been over-zealous in its treatment and actions towards Montelimar. Where they could have chosen the course of just settlement and just recompense, they opted for the course of wholesale glorification and expansion at the expense of our neighbour whilst ruffling the feathers of every other country in the region and pissing on the chips of everyone. That is not responsible conduct. The fact they have failed to face up to their obligations of their actions thus far and have failed to acknowledge the consequences of their manoeuvres augurs ill for Gallia and Engellexian-Germanian relations. They do not get it, they do not understand the concept of "get real". Personally, I fear for the dignity and well-being of the King of Montelimar, the relation of our King... I feel under the circumstances that offering Danish asylum is the best option in lieu of substantial Engellexian assurances".

Asked for comments on the Vice Statsminister's announcement, the Office of the Statsminister and Foreign Office declined to comment.

»The Defence Ministry states that Danish military presence in the Great Sea is likely to be semi-permanent and be 'reactive to events'. The ultimate aim is to 'preserve Danish trade interests and to act as a counter to destablising forces'. The statement went on: 'with insecurity in the region, we cannot leave it to chance to preserve our interests and we must take positive and concerted action'. It is likely that Danmark's overseas territory of Færøerne, close to Europaland, will be used as a base. The Færøerne council has welcomed the move as it is likely to see an increased economic boost to the islands which rely mainly on sheep rearing and fishing.

»The Corporation of Fredrikshavn - the second city of Danmark, the main port and site of its huge naval base - adopts free port (free economic zone) status to position itself as the entry point into eastern Gallia and southern Germania.

»Helga von Stromsgaard, front runner for the leadership of leftist Ny Venstre, calls for immediate Engellex withdrawal from Montelimar and the creation of a socialist republic of Montelimar. "Away with monarchs, lets have a republic of the people, by the people, for the people".

»Census results indicate that population growth has increased by 1.5 million partly due to a mix of immigration from other parts of Europe and higher birth-rates amongst immigrant populations in the last ten years with the Danish population now reaching 95.4 million.

Færøerne Islands prepare for military and economic windfall
You must be registered for see images

The quintessential Færøerne

The far-flung Danish archipelago of the Færøerne Islands are welcoming an unexpected boost to their economic fortunes following tensions in the Great Sea as the Danish government announces an enhanced military presence with Færøernen people expected to see the benefit of 'military-krone' and millions in related-industry inward investment and jobs.

The metropolitan Danish government has said that it will enhance its military presence in the islands largely for greater operative manoeuverability and to protect the islands from any potential fall-out from tensions in the Great Sea region though it said it did not expect any harm to come to the islands. An expected 15,000 military personnel are expected to be based on the islands in existing military bases with contingents of all three main arms of the Danish crown forces. The capital of Færøerne, the port city of Klaksvik, will see a rapid response marine unit, air force units and the presence naval vessels including frigates and destroyers. Rumours of the despatch of an air craft carrier have not been officially announced though some believe it is on the cards.

The reaction of the 84,000 islanders to the news from Christiansborg has been generally received well with many seeing it as an opportunity to diversify the island economy and enhance alternative employment prospects which have hitherto been largely centred on old land and sea based survival and, latterly, tourism. The leader of the Færøerne Ráðið (Council), which governs the islands, Einar Vagadal said: "This is good news for our islands, the most distant part of the Danish realm. We look forward to welcoming our mainland brothers and are glad at the new horizons provided by this development".

Unspoiled and rugged islands with fiercely independent and sturdy people to match, Færøerne has been a part of the Danish kingdom for over a millennium when it was originally settled by migrating Scanians- specifically the Danskfolk tribes - in AD 969 with the islands keeping close ties to their brothers who formed the progenitor of modern-day Danmark. The personal connections are maintained and ultimately symbolised by the Danish king who holds the title Prince of the Færøerne. Whereas mainland Danmark came to be consumed within the Holy Germanian Empire for 300 years, Færøerne remained out of reach and remained the sole independent bastion of the Danes. Geographically isolated for centuries, they eked out a living on the windswept land and frequently rough seas around them in the age-old practices of fishing, sheep rearing, farming (crofting), and whisky production which provided the staple of their island economy into recent times. In difficult times, many islanders moved to the mainland for work or even to other countries nearby. Being detached from the vissitudes of 'metropolitan Danmark', their governments have tended to be more socialist and agrarian than the mainland with their canton having a greater degree of self-government than most other Danish cantons. Their people are genetically pure and the language they speak is an old form of the original Danskfolk language and diverges significantly from the Danish mainland with its Germanian influences.

However the islands have not existed in splendid isolation having ancient and extensive trading connections to nearby countries especially nearby Europaland, Suionia, Breotonia, Arendaal and Havenshire, as well as having links to the Celtic world and Himyar via maritime connections, and has long been a stop off point for merchant shipping from various parts of Europe. Recent times have seen Færøerne people engage with the outside world through the internet and satellite television, a take-up rate that even exceeds some parts of mainland Danmark. In recent times, tourism has increasingly important with around 250,000 visitors a year and outside settlement has increased with a small Europalandic community and people from Germanian League nations seeking a quiet life.

Europaland welcomes the Danish presence as a stabilising force in the region and has no objection to the Danish government increasing security around the Færøerne in these uncertain times. In addition I would like to express that Europaland wishes to maintain and build upon its social and economic links with the Færøernen people. As their nearest mainland neighbour we very much value the historic connections between our two peoples and see greater economic cooperation in the years ahead as highly beneficial for both of our countries.

Færøerne Ráðið

The Færøerne have a long trading history and friendship with Europaland lasting many centuries and it pleases us for this to continue. Whilst an intrinisic and close part of the Danish kingdom with considerable economic assistance from the mainland, we have a significant degree of autonomy on internal economic affairs operated through the Ráðið, or Council, and welcome new opportunities to encourage trade with our Europalandic friends and neighbours.

IN BRIEF

»The leader of the Social Democrats, Dr Christian Gaardsen, resigns due to 'family matters' and is replaced unopposed by Johannes Christoffersen. A former shadow finance minister, he is even more critical of the government's foreign policy than his predecessor and more hard-line especially towards its Engellex policy. Unlike Dr Gaardsen however, he is much more pro-Germanian League. Upon succeeding to the leadership, Herr Christoffersen proclaimed: "We need a change from this jaded and failed government". Critical of Dr Gaardsen's leadership, many Social Democrats are hoping for an electoral advance against the governing coalition under Christoffersen's leadership.

»The government indicates a push to develop trade and political relations with the east - particularly Yujin and Karakhstan. The Trade Ministry stated that "relationships between Danmark and the east would be mutually beneficial and deserving of exploration and cementation".

»Færøerne is to get an extra DKR 50 m in investment from Christiansborg to help diversify its economy. The Færøerne Council has welcomed the move. The islands are also due to receive added oil and gas shipments taking advantage of the Kyivan energy deal. Færøerne Council has also called for a pipeline linking it to Europaland or energy deals with other nearby countries such as Breotonia.

»The newly-emerged minority party Slesvig Union launches its political manifesto. The right-of-centre party calls for the reunification of lands that it claims are rightfully Danish inside Zoomany.

We welcome this call from the Færøerne Council and will be happy to see our two governments work together in the construction of a new pipeline which can provide the Færøerne Islands with all its energy needs. A delegation from the council is welcome to come to Europa City at any time in order to meet with me or with any other appropriate political or business officials in order to discuss the plan in greater detail and allow an opportunity for our two peoples to expand and build upon their historic social and economic links.

The People's Republic of Vangala must express its disappointment it was not mentioned in plans by the Kingdom of Danmark to expand trade relations with Eastern nations.

We would like to note that we are open to discussing trade options with the People's Republic of Vangala. That we mentioned only two eastern states does not preclude developing relations with others. We look forward to further talks on this issue.

IN BRIEF

»A 300 nautical mile military and fishing zone is to be applied around the Færøerne Islands in response to 'uncertain times in maritime security' and the lack of a break-through in the Hirosaki Maritime Security Conference, though the zone is expected to be temporary and mainly for the benefit of fishermen for whom it is the traditional stable of the island economy.

»Danish naval presence is to be based in Franken, the Defence Ministry announces, an addition to the Eiffellandian presence. The ministry stated that it would allow Danmark to assist in efforts to protect Germania and allow greater 'operational manoeuverability'. Greater collaboration between Germanian League nations is likely.

»'Intensive' discussions to take place on finer details of Danish-East trade. Sources indicates that moves are afoot to 'consolidate trade routes' in tandem with the promotion of liberal democracy by 'taking under the wing' territories in the east.

»Condolences paid to Suionian Statsminister Hjelmer-Lindeskog. Danish Statsminister Jens Peder Hillerød paid tribute to her leadership and as a human being. Hillerød: "We Scanians have lost a stateswoman".

»The pan-Germanian League oil and gas lines initiative to be announced. It will work in tandem with the separate Kyivan deal.
