THE EDITORIAL BOARD
Albapasila | 14/02/2022

As many in Albapasila begin to openly question the health of Generalissimo Enrique Serrano d'Aldemar, the lifelong President of the Centralist Republic of Luzaide, discussion of His Excellency's succession has openly reached official and everyday circles alike. Who the successor will be is beyond question: the Generalissimo's nephew and designated successor, General Carlos d'Aldemar Temerario, is set to take over the reins of the country, as has been practice in Luzaide for over half a century. What that successor's term in office will be like, however, is another question.

The Generalissimo has certainly recognised his nephew's skill and charisma, making him the ideal choice to head the regime. The politics of General d'Aldemar Temerario, on the other hand, are quite distinct from those of the incumbent. Whereas the Generalissimo is staunchly within the catholic corporatist faction of the regime, his anointed successor is considered to be a representative of the secularist liberals, who joined forces with the military regime as a way of pushing the Luzaidan State and society forward by setting aside the political gridlock of past parliamentary structures, dominated by rival entrenched elite factions.

Yet, after almost a century of military rule, many in Albapasila feel ready for change. The country's industry has developed, and GDP has grown, but the rural and urban poor alike are without many of the rights and social protections their counterparts the world over take for granted. Societal norms appear stuck in the middle of the previous century, while an increasingly urbanised and youthful Luzaide looks to its neighbours to the north for inspiration.

Genelarissimo Enrique Serrano d'Aldemar's tenure has been stable and prosperous; many pray for his health. But equally as many hope that, in the unfortunate event of his demise, his successor will be ready and able to seize control of the Luzaidan state, with its entrenched interests and power players, and steer toward a new path.
