Greetings, and welcome to the European Chess Federation!
The European Chess Federation is the international regulatory body for high level chess within the world of 1953 Europe. The European Chess Federation is an officially apolitical organization. This organization is open to chess champions of all nationalities, regardless of race, creed, gender, or political ideology.

Historical Background [IC]

The European Chess Federation was officially founded in early 1953, after protracted negotiations between representatives of various national Chess organizations from around the globe. The inspiration for this organization lies with one man, Saami Grandmaster Gaaral Beavrrti. Beavrrti first floated the idea of an international chess federation to his colleagues in the late 1940s, but it was only with considerable difficulty that he was able to find enough international support and funding for this enterprise. In recognition of his leading role in the foundation of the European Chess Federation, current ECF headquarters are located in Aanaari, Saamiland, the city of his birth.

While the constitution of the European Chess Federation opens the organization to members of all ages, genders, nationalities, and creeds, membership in the European Chess Federation requires one to be a recognized member of their respective national chess federation or simmilar body, and to have achieved the rank of Master or Grandmaster in said organization. The European Chess Federation accepts only the best chess players from around the world.

Structure [OOC]

The European Chess Federation is a regulatory body, intended to coordinate matches and tournaments between international players. As such, this thread will serve as a coordinating and logistical thread for signups, friendly/unranked matches, ranking updates, and other announcements. I hope that all OOC discussion will be kept in the OOC thread in General Discussion. The OOC thread can be located here:

The premier event of the European Chess Federation will be the European Chess Championship, which will be held annually, at a date and time to be determined. The championship will be held annually to preserve continuity between roleplay in the ECF and the larger IC world we are helping to create. This does not, however, mean that there will only be one ECF event per year. Rather, I plan to run a series of ECF-sanctioned tournaments as my schedule allows. The results of these tournaments will be factored into a ranking system for all players, to allow nations to evolve their players in the quest for a position as current World Champion. Rankings for all tournaments will be updated after the completion of that tournament, and before the start of another. Exact ranking structure will be developed according to our needs. All players will be informed of the ranking system's mechanics, and are welcome to contribute thoughts and suggestions. Likewise, I will keep players informed of any and all changes to the scorination program, and welcome their feedback.

In addition to a series of tournaments, players are welcome to organize friendly matches between opposing players. Friendly matches will not, however, impact player rankings. All friendly chess matches can be arranged in this thread, and will likewise have their results posted in this thread. Players are also welcome to post RP in this thread either relating to friendly matches, or with general domestic news about their chess players/programs.

Scorination [OOC]

All ECF tournaments and friendly matches will be scorinated impartially, using the excel-based Chessinator v0.2. This program was designed independently by the player behind Saamiland/Boer Republics/Novikov. An overview of the basic coding is located here: . A detailed list of changes from v0.1 to v0.2 can be found here: .

Chessinator v0.2 had the advantage over a basic random number generator, in that it generates the number of points lost by both players, as well as the win/loss/draw result. For those unfamiliar with point scoring in chess, pawns are 1 point each, knights and bishops 3 points each, rooks 5 points each and the queen 9 points, for a grand total of 39 points. Generated results show total points lost, without designating which pieces were lost. This is to provide more substance for roleplay - allowing for results like surprise victories in spite of loosing many pieces, or uncanny draws with several pieces left on the board, rather than just dull win-loss-draw results.

The Chessinator also factors in a player's ranking when generating results, with more ranking points improving the chances of a victory or draw. Players can also generate additional ranking points through roleplay (the RP bonus) for each day of a tournament. RP bonus, however, will not be available to friendly matches, for convenience sake.

Finally, the Chessinator uses a style modifier for each player. The style modifier is any number between 1.0 and -1.0, representing how aggressive or cautious a player is. Players with a positive style modifier play more aggressively. They are willing to trade pieces with their opponent, and thus have an increased rate of point capture and and increased rate of point loss. On the other hand, players with a negative style modifier play more defensive. They are less willing to trade pieces, and this reduces both their point capture and point loss. Because of my imperfect coding, players should know that the highest style modifiers will inadvertently increase their chance of a draw, while extremely low style modifiers will increase the likelihood of unrealistic draws (with low point capture on both sides) and 'stunning' checkmates, achieved while the mated opponent still has the majority of their pieces. No style modifier is favored over any other, and, aside from the marginally increased rate of draws for players with positive modifiers, they should have no impact on the outcome of the match.

Signups [IC]

All nations interested in participating in the European Chess Federation are welcome to sign up players using the form below. For logistical reasons, however, nations are limited to 5 total players per nation. New players may be assigned a starting amount of ranking points between 0 and 10, to indicate their level of skill. However, while these starting points may be distributed according to the whims of the nation, the average rank of all players from a specific nation must be equal to or less than 5. Or to put it another way, each nation gets 5 points per registered player, to distribute as wished, up to the maximum of 25 points (5 total players).

DANMARK

MAGNUS HOLGER KARSTENSEN
Age: 17
Nationality: Danish
Short Bio: The Grand Royal Chess Fastigium raised Karstensen to heights. Taught in an occluded background due to the religious beliefs of his parents, the young Magnus, still a minor, learned chess in his spare time under an intensive intellectual drum including of seven languages (aside from the native tongue) - Eiffelander Teuton, Aenglish, Galloise, High Fennish, Classical and Modern Tiburan, Oselian, and Yujiner alongside dialects, and studies in history and chemistry and others beside. Fiercely intelligent, beyond his years, precocious, an accomplished and irredoubtable dead-set chess master, regarded by some as a young upstart but marvelled at by those in the game for years, Karstensen has managed to demonstrate his majestic command of the skills of victorious in chess that have, apparently, caused a mix of hubristic anger at defeat (including a dramatic walking-out of one player in a contest) and also elevated patronage from elder players wanting to both encourage this nascent star of the board and urge their own accomplished guile upon him, not that he seems to need it.

GULBRAND INGVAR STEFANSEN
Age: 32
Nationality: Danish
Short Bio: A working-class operator of drills, this man has depths that go beyond the usual stereotypes. A life of graft, sweat, toil and swear words, interviews with local newspapers show that Stefansen can swear as much as the next man, and indulge in thoroughly sexist talk and actions, but that he has a honed brain betraying the misconceptions of stereotyped heritage. He won the 1950 Danish Grand Fastigium of Chess in Aabenraa province and was not beaten until his meeting with Magnus Holger Karstensen in a national round held in Fredrikshavn. Holding out his muscular, work-shod and dry-skinned hand, he congratulated the young stripling in a taught grip but, according to interviews, was resolutely resolved in trying to defeat him. A national seconder, but latent cultural hero, Stefansen is entered into the hallowed chambers of chess and is a latent notable.

RAGNVALD KNUDSEN
Age: 41
Nationality: Danish
Short Bio: A dilettante, a 'pink champagne' middle-class subscriber to the values and effects of such magazines and newspapers of the centre-left in Danish discourse, Knudsen is a relative newcomer, untested in the international field. He has succeeded in local championships and reached the final stage of the national chess rounds. He succeeded in winning the 1951 Preliminary Royal Danish Grand Chess Fastigium after a lengthy game with his opponent only to be beaten by his obvious opponent Gulbrand Stefansen. Known for caution, indeed sporting paranoia, his efforts place him third in Danish entries. He has been noted for a careful watch of his opponent's movements even taking inordinate time to make his next move. An arch dither with accomplishments, Knudsen has never even managed to meet the sterling star of chess youth, Karstensen, in game. Seen by some as needing more aggression, others as a riser, Knudsen ranks as third in national rankings to the international competition.

Welcome to both of you! I'm looking for 1 or 2 more applicants, after which I'll start working on the first tournament.

As an aside, I'd like to remind everyone of two things. First, I'm accepting up to five players per nation, so feel free to add more. Secondly, I'd like to remind everyone that they can use up to 5 ranking points per player. Thus, with two players, you have 10 ranking points to distribute. You can go 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, etc. However you like with these points. Higher points means a better chance of winning, so take advantage of all of them! So far, all of you have used less than the maximum, and are thus putting yourselves at a disadvantage. Feel free to correct this, if you want (you certainly don't have to). I will check to see if any changes happen as I can.

To give everyone a feel for how a scorinated match looks, the following Saami players challange their foreign counterparts to friendly challanges, to be conducted in the main auditorium on the Aanaari National University's campus. All events will be 5-match competitions, with ties determined by a single-match playoff.

THOMAS 'Wiz Kid' FRANKLIN (Cantiginia) v. APPO GULAHALANOLMMOS (Saamiland)
FRANCIS PORCHESTER (Cantiginia) v. GAARAL BEAVRRTI (Saamiland)

ERCOLE DEL RIO (Potenza) v. MIKKEL OOLI (Saamiland)

Nationality: Ivernish / Frankish
Short bio: Born to Frankish parents in south Ivernia, Johann was seen to have great talent at a very early age. Johann was taught the game of chess in some of the best schools in Franken, however it was the Royal Chess Federation of Ivernia where Johann became aligned to. Considered the father of modern Ivernish chess, he is now in semi-retirement.
Plays a balanced, but slightly defensive game.

A hearty welcome to both Ivernia and, of course, our comrades in Havenshire! Everyone to have applied so far is accepted, and the member list has been updated accordingly. Expect the first tournament (The Siyang Masters Tournament), to have a thread up in the coming few days, with scorination beginning sometime after that. And of course, a special thanks to Oikawa for hosting this inaugural event.

Apologies for the long delay. ECF members will be pleased to see that the first tournament, the Siyang Chess Classic, is now up and running. All members are encouraged to sign up their players and begin RPing in the tournament thread. Signups will be open for approx. one week. If you are not currently regestered in the ECF, please follow the format given in this thread's OP to regester your players, and then sign up in the tournament thread. The tournament thread can be found here:

Again, thank you to Oikawa for volunteering to host this inaugural event. If you have any comments/concerns/suggestions about the description of setting, please let me know!

JONATAN SAFAREWICZ
Age: 49
Nationality: Swieczieman
Short Bio: Grandmaster for the Sarmatian Chess League, Jonatan was from a young age, shown to have an uncannily sharp mind frequently described as a steel trap. He quickly found use for it in the art of chess, and has since honed this innate ability into a highly efficient machine. A Physical Chemist by profession, he dedicates much of his free time to playing in the Sarmatian Chess League. A common spectacle at science conventions hosted by his alma mater the University of Giecz is having him play against multiple volunteers simultaneously, while blindfolded.

EWA KRASINSKA
Age: 23
Nationality: Swieczieman
Short Bio: Apprentice to the late great Borys Gaida, founder of the Sarmatian Chess League, Ewa is described by many to be mechanical, an ice cold beauty who dedicates every fibre of her being to the game. This chilly disposition is not all too different from her mentor, who even her parents say knew her much better than they did. Ewa has made it a life goal to decrypt and replicate the formidable defensive plays that her had teacher refined, especially the ones that he was not able to write down in his posthumously published memoir-strategy guide hybrid, Hold the Line: The War of the Boards.

FELIKS DYK
Age: 34
Nationality: Swieczieman
Short Bio: A player who literally came out of nowhere, Feliks' first known game was the 1952 Sarmatian League Cup, where he made first runner up, claiming it to have been his "first time". Whether a matter of beginner's luck or some potential talent is yet to be seen, but it appears to be a mixture of both. Since then, he has begun "formal" training with the League during his spare time, and is quickly gaining a reputation for very good insight. He works as an engineer for Freinkel Electronics.

Welcome! Feel free to sign one or both of your players up for the Siyang Chess Classic, which will be starting sometime next week! I notice that you have given your two players 12 total skill points, which is more than the maximum of 5/player (see OP). Please revise this, either by reducing your current players' skill by two points, or by adding more players. Remember, you can have up to five registered players per nation. Take advantage of this: it gives you more skill points to play with.
