The company was founded as a magazine publishing business by Christian Spurdoström in 1802 and became a limited company in 1989 having previously been a family business. Start AB was introduced in the Goteköping Stock Exchange in 1992. Start is often translated as a noun meaning "home" or "inception" in English.
Start maintains over 47 different publications in eleven countries. The majority of which are in Suionia. Major publications include:
- Kvällsbladet: Suionia's major tabloid newspaper, established in 1831 by Lars Johansson, it was owned by the Suionian Trade Union Confederation (LO) from 1958 until 1992 when harsh economic conditions resulted in LO being forced to sell a majority stake to Start AB. Kvällsbladet is considered an afternoon newspaper, being printed at noon and usually available to the country by three in the afternoon. It is Suionia's most widely distributed newspaper with usually a social-democratic slant. It is based out of Drottninggården, and tends to focus on events in the capital city. It is found appealing due to its coverage of celebrity gossip and oft- outrageous commentary. Kvällsbladet is well known for its more academic coverage of more serious events, giving it a high standard of journalism from time to time.
- Götiska Dagbladet: A major morning newspaper, it is considered a newspaper of record in Suionia. The title translates as "the Gothic daily paper" coming from the renamed nation after the loss of Svealand in 1812. First printed in 1814, the newspaper was the first of the Spurdoström family's newspaper investments. It filled the void of the former Svearnas Dagbladet which stopped printing after 1812. Often referred to as GöD (pronounced: gee-ööö-deee), it is published in Drottninggården and provides coverage of national and international news as well as local coverage of the Greater Drottninggården region. Its subscribers are concentrated in the capital, but it is distributed in most of Suionia.
