- National Labor Party exceeds expectations in the polls
During the last round of biannual polls in the run up to the actual national executive elections, which regularly takes place upon the fifth of February, the National Labor Party exceeded all the expectations set for it by analysts and critics. Whereas just last week, most were commentating on their belief that the party would claim, "ten percent of the seats" or "at least a sizeable minority". Both estimates appear to be inaccurate when the latest poll results came in, in which fourty-five percent of the population surveyed claimed to support the Labor Party in this round of parliamentary elections. It is a surprising shift from the former conservative tendencies which were voted in only five years ago.
The Commonwealth permits a certain amount of political parties to participate in the national elections every five years as per the constitutional allowances. However, in co-ordination with this, these poll results are being taken into account during the last permissive stage of the elections, in which the current Parliamentary Council will decide which five political entities will be allowed to be represented in the voting booths.
In addition to the Labor Party, which by it's popularity, likely afforded itself representation, it is likely that the recently ailing conservative party will participate, in addition to the fledging Commonwealth First Party. So far, all parties that have been confirmed as participating are of Capa Tempestad, none from Riòcostella. Polls in the latter area show a sincere popularity of the Commonwealth First Party, surprisingly enough, but owing to the relatively minute population of the northern prefectures, it is unlikely that it will be weighed very heavily in comparison to the more burgeoning urban area's of the southern prefectures.
Amongst other, less popular candidates for representation are the Sociàl Front, and the Unionist Progressive Party. Both are generally only popular with the extreme lower class, and as such it is unlikely that either will achieve any real progress or amount of seats in the national elections. In any event, whilst two parties are so far confirmed, all other political entities have been rallying up their funding and attempting to make this last season of political campaigning a definitive one.
- Ban of Alcoholic products in Férizanno sparks controversy
Férizanno prefecture, the heartland of agriculture in the Commonwealth - named after the founder of the nation itself, recently passed a bill in the local parliament to ban the consumption and production of alcoholic products. Whilst the bill had been in debate for a length of time, it had never been given serious considerations due to the perceived unlikelihood of it being passed. However, the Prefecture's parliament approved the bill yesterday, sparking a great deal of protest and controversy from both the population of the prefecture, as well as from many business executives across the nation.
Férizanno, enjoys a fairly warm climate, allowing the growth of grapes and the production of wine, which is in fact, one of the prefecture's most profitable industries. The banning of it's production, is slated to bring a severe drop in the amount of annual revenue for the prefecture. It is likely that the national Parliament will be forced to revoke the measure, so as to remove the restriction on business, which might be interpreted as unconstitutional. Business is, according to the constitution of the Commonwealth, allowed no restrictions beside that of morality - and the restriction of production of a product as profitable as wine, is likely not going to be tolerated.
So far though, no measures have been put forth.
