  • Support for ailing Zollernick and Olbershaven? – Today the Reichstag discussed a proposal by the SDP which suggests sizeable subsidies for the ailing economies of Olbershaven and Zollernick. According to the largest opposition party „the good people of Zollernick and Olbershaven should no longer be abused as cheap suppliers of raw material to the rest of the country and be left standing in the rain if the economic conditions turn sour.“ Both states‘ economies have hit dire straits in the wake of declining prices for mining and agricultural products on the world market. Their tradtional customers in the heavy industry centres of Großlausitz have turned to cheaper suppliers from abroad. Economic Affairs Minister Peter Schuhmann (Christian People’s Party – CVP) acknowledged the bleak situation both provinces are in, but dismissed the demand as too high and to broadly defined. The discussion will carry on and will certainly be carefully observed by the two regions‘ electorates.

  • Easing visa and trade regulations for immediate neighbours? – Another issue debated by the Reichstag was the government’s proposal to ease visa and trade regulations for neighbouring countries in order to facilitate bilateral and/or multilateral trade. This issue was opposed by the SDP, as they fear domestic jobs could be endangered if the proposal goes through. Ministerpresident Marquadt in turn reminded the opposition that only by competition an economy could thrive: „Just think – eased trade regulations could encourage foreign investors to put some effort and money into Zollernick and Olbershaven. If we retain or even expand the red tape accompanying foreing investment we may never see recovery in those regions.“

  • Crown Prince Benedikt to go to Eiffelland to finish his university degree - According to today’s announcement by the Royal Household Crown Prince Benedikt has chosen Eiffelland’s capital of Trier to finish his university studies. It is customary for princes of the royal house to spend their last year of university abroad to gain some invaluable insight into international politics. As much as his move is expected and not a surprise, it is also suggested that the Crown Prince needs this year to cool off in terms of his – supposedly – countless romantic adventures. None of which were ever confirmed by the Royal Household.

News in brief from Großlausitz

 Where will Großlausitz go on the international level? If you observe the political debate, you will discover there are several options. Some, such as His Majesty’s Government, prefer picking partners by usefulness, while others, such as the Socialdemocrats, suggest self-restraint and neutrality on the international level. An even minor faction in parliament proposes a Gallo-Germanic alliance, based on cultural and ethnic closeness. Foreign policy experts surmise Graf von Marquadt’s government will eventually revive and/or make partnerships with other nations based on a mixed premise - a mixture of ethnic closeness and usefulness for Großlausnitz.

 The Catholic Church of Großlausnitz expressed its delight about the imminent beatification of Robert Carsonne, sponsored by the Catholic Church of Mergogne. A spokesman for the primate of Großlausnitz, the Archbishop of Zittau, hinted that the Archbishop has material at his disposal to speed up the process for considering sainthood. „Robert Carsonne was a very caring and compassionate politician with the welfare and liberty of the common man in mind. In each and every of his actions you can recognize how deeply rooted he was in his faith. That is why we want to assist our brethren in faith with the process following the beatification.“

Nachrichten in Kürze – News in brief

 The Kingdom of Großlausitz accepted the invitation to the so-called International Commission, His Majesty’s Government decided today. At this morning’s cabinet meeting Ministerpresident Graf Franz von Marquardt and his ministers approved a proposal by the Foreign Minister to join the international body. According to a press bulletin released by the Foreign Office this afternoon, Großlausitz‘ representative to the International Commission will be Johannes Wolfgang Born, a senior diplomat, who has very recently returned from his two years term as ambassador to Eiffelland. Currently he heads the department for international policy in the Foreign Affairs.

 In another press bulletin the Foreign Office announced that it will significantly expand Großlausitz‘ diplomatic missions in Längerland in order to approach a culturally and economically similarly minded country. In concrete terms this will mean the opening of three further general consulate in addition to the currently existing one as well as enlarging the embassy staff in Längerland’s capital. Experts consider this a first step by His Majesty’s Government for talks on bilateral cooperation.

 Following talks with the Eiffellander royal household and its government on security arrangements, Crown Prince Benedikt and a small entourage boarded one of our Royal Family’s junior jet planes operated by the Royal Air Force to travel to Trier. There, he will prepare for finishing his studies as a Diplom-Kaufmann (MBA) and gain experience abroad. According to the Royal Household of Großlausitz Crown Prince Benedikt intends – as many of his fellow students – to work as a student temp in the accounting or administration department of a larger local company to gain some professional insight. For security reasons the name of the company will not be disclosed beforehand.

We confirm that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Benedikt was welcomed at the University that will supervise his internship at an Eiffellandian company. The Königlicher Garde and the Staatsschutz will cooperate with the Großlausitzer security units to ensure the Crown Prince's safety.

Grand Duchy of Nichtstein

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Großlausitz is also very much welcome to visit Nichtstein, as His Highness'es residential permit in Eiffelland allows him to travel to the Grand Duchy without any further bureaucratic undertakings. His Royal Highness shall surely appreciate the local chocolate chipped cookies and cake. Both cheesecake and just cheese.

 Economic Affairs Minister Christian Leder took off to Lägerland at the helm of large delegation at Zittau’s airport this morning. His job is to pave the way for a bilateral trade agreement between both countries. He is accompanied by senior representatives from Großlausitzer companies.

 According to the Royal Household Crown Prince Benedikt’s stay in Eiffelland was kicked off by his enrolment at the University. Very much true to his father’s credo that a king is the state’s and people’s first servant Crown Prince Benedikt did not exploit his privileged status but patiently waited in line at the University’s central office for studies to submit his papers. The only difference from his fellow students were the two bodyguards with him. It was also announced that His Royal Highness will certainly explore Eiffelland’s small abutter Nichtstein.
