Hawker Aeronautics was formed on 30 November 1920 when, after Sopwith Aviation went bankrupt, Thomas Sopwith joined with Harold Hawk, an aviation engineer and test pilot, to establish Hawker Engineering. In 1932 the company became Hawker Aviation and in 1948, Hawker Aeronautics.​
