The legislative Grand Council has almost unanimously - 47 of 50 votes - elected Ataolope Greens as the 22nd Grand Chief-President of the Heroquois Confederacy. Ataolope, aged 58 and a member of the Soteaux Deer Clan, has been a member of the Government as War Chief and Grand Secretary for both the Interior and Exterior. He has appointed Wematan Andrew Hewer of the Esqua Deer Clan as his new Vice-President of the Confederacy.

'ALESQUA DAM PROJECT INITIATED'

The Soteaux National Government has initiated the construction of the Alesqua Dam on River Peiwa in the Alesqua Governorate. One and a half year ago the Confederal Grand Council approved the Soteaux plans for building a hydroelectric dam on the Peiwa River, which is to generate an estimated 5,000 MW and speed the economic and social development in the region. The project is to be completed in 1960, with the dam fully operational and generating electricity in Autumn 1961. When finished, the Alesqua Dam will be the largest dam within Heroquoia.
Protest groups however, such as environmentalists and dislocated villagers, have uttered their grievances relating the project. They state they feel neglected by both the National and Federal Government of whom they say are acting against the general will and welfare of the populace. Two months ago local shaman Mr. Berry Sato and followers have been held in custody for interrupting preparatory works on the construction site.
