One cannot accurately describe the feelings of the men on board. I feel as though the largest cargo this ship is carrying is copies of La Prensa Libre detailing the Carentanian movements to Tierra de la Nieve. The men onboard seem terrified, telling stories that any educated individual would see as wholly false, but this people are solely meant to take us to the pole, sailors are not the brightest of gents. I wish heavily that we would have gone with the Navy, it’d be more efficient, cleaner, and the men more tolerable. Plus, it’d make the Carentanians less likely to shoot at us once we arrive.
The stories the sailors are telling are so marvelous I simply cannot ignore them and must write them down. One sailor spoke, and may I quote

“The Carentanians eat people, I’ve heard of it before, I’ll be damned if the bastards eat us!”

“There’s a saying in Jurzan, ‘the cleanest Carentanian is less good than the dirtiest Talemantine.”

“They’re sending us to die! The Carentanians will make landfall and bombard the shelters we will have made and they’ll continue to pillage and piss on our hands unless we give them the sexual favors that they crave!”

“Communism is a mental disorder really, no different from homosexuality. The poor fellows across the ocean, but to think the world would let a bunch of retards man a warship is crazy.”

I don’t the filth on this very ship can even point out the giant glob of desert and decay located in Himyar. Regardless still, the crew is worried. I’m inclined to believe they should be. The Carentanian Government is bogged down funding a war in Yujin and they still find it necessary to allocate their resources to landing an infantry division in the giant southern glacier for no other purpose than to say “look at what we did!”

In all seriousness, what if the Carentanians do open fire, how do we respond? I’m nearly positive that there are weapons somewhere onboard this ship, Heredia isn’t stupid and they’re well aware of the belligerent style of the Carentanians. It’d be a most deplorable situation if we’re held captive for any amount of time. Such an action would prompt a serious response from the Government; I’d be interested to see how they handle it.

But that’s enough of that. There are three ships, two research vessels and a cargo ship carrying the supplies necessary to build the permanent base. The ship I’m on, the San Rafael, is the chief scientific research vessel. The conditions onboard aren’t too bad, it’s a tab bit cramped because it was originally a warship that was converted in Primer. There aren’t many on the research team, I’m a biologist, my job is to research the biodiversity in Tierra de la Nieve. Other researchers include geologists, oceanographers, physicists, astronomers, glaciologists, and meteorologists. It’s a truly remarkable experience – proved we don’t get shot at, but I suppose that’d be a remarkable experience as well – to be able to conduct and analyze experiments on this planet that can’t be reproduced anywhere else. The mentality of “let us beat the Ivernians!” will hopefully fuel good competition that brings out the best of the researchers.
