Doubts Raised On Historic Lost Civilization

Researchers from Brazul and Pindorama are led to believe that there is a lost civilization lying underneath Lago Carijó, a lake bordering northern Brazul and southern Seneca. While some researchers are excited at the prospect of uncovering lost artifacts from Lago Carijó, the difficulty of uncovering such fabled civilization will prove to make any expeditions very unlikely.

While the research may be supported by some, others have disagreed and outright reject the notion of an advanced civilization lying underneath the lake, including University of Vesterfjor’s Occidentology Department head “Erich Rosenberg” and University of Charleroi’s Anthropology Department “Ben Cleaveland”. Professor Jean Martel, head of the Anthropology Department at the University of Royeaux, has also raised his doubts on the plausibility on a lost civilization.

“There is no scientific basis or evidence that there is a lost civilization underneath the lake.” said the Professor. “A flooding which covers the entirety of Lake Carijo is unlikely and would have taken an extended period of time to fill the current boundaries of the Lake. The surrounding lakes and rivers would not have enough volume of water to fill the lakes. Until researchers can find the reason of flooding, we cannot even support it as a scientific hypothesis.”

Nanterre Referendum

Duke Basile has issued a statement to the press earlier today that the Duchy of Nanterre will be holding a referendum for independence from the Kingdom of Avignon within the week. The Duke cited that the people of Nanterre were sinking further into poverty and the people were oppressed by the central government. He has invited observers from Venissieux and the international community to observe the referendum in Nanterre.

When asked about the referendum and Duke Basile, the Avignan Government stated that it will "uphold the law and act swiftly in response to the illegal referendum." They also refuted the oppression and poverty claims, stating that Nanterre's quality of life is comparable to the rest of the Kingdom. King Cyril IV was not available to issue a statement.

There have been reports of murmurs among politicians and unsanctioned debates at Royeaux questioning the legality and legitimacy of the referendum. Avignan delegates have insisted that it is illegal and has voiced their request for support from the Venissian kingdoms on opposing the referendum and their refusal to acknowledge Nanterre's possible independence. Delegation has been mixed on their stance in regards to the referendum, ranging from support of the Avignan government to indifference to Avignan internal affairs.

As of now there has not been a sanctioned meeting on the referendum in Royeaux, citing "internal affairs is left to be handled by the sovereign state." There has been speculation on Nanterre's status within the United Kingdoms should it successfully cede from Avignon - whether or not it will be granted formal membership as the sixth member of Venissieux. Officials declined commenting on the matters. In addition, observers has not been confirmed to be attending the referendum. It is likely that all or most of the Venissian kingdoms will not dispatch any observers out of respect for the Avignan government.

Nanterre is a small Duchy situated in southern Avignon, bordering Wendziema. It is home to some 200,000 citizens. Its capital and largest city is Legnica. Duke Basile is the youngest son of King Cyril IV, who was granted the title Duke of Nanterre by his father 2 years ago.

Sirs,

It is the opinion of the Rzeczpospolita Wendziema that the call by the Duke of Nanterre to hold a referendum on the status of independence of his people must be respected, both by the Venissian Kingdoms and the international community. For when a government joins its voice to that of the people in a territory, it shows that this government indeed serves the interest of the people rather than itself, and we must lend our heartfelt commendations to the Duke of Nanterre for showing he, despite being a royal, is ultimately a man of the people. This demands respect despite ideological differences.

I am authorized by the Rzeczpospolita Assembly and the Assembly of Overseers of the Revolution, therefore, to announce our intention to accept the invitation to observe the conduct of the referendum and those who organize and implement it, in order to ensure that the results, whatever they may be, are free, fair and accurate. Should all of these criteria be met, no matter if the results are independence or status quo, the Rzeczpospolita Wendziema will respect the results and act accordingly. If, on the other hand, the will of the people and the government that represents them is not respected, let it be known that the Rzeczpospolita will not tolerate this suppression, and will react accordingly.

We also wish it to be known that we welcome observers from all other nations of the international world, no matter their ideological beliefs, to join the Wendowie in their observation of this referendum and observe the will of the people in action. This must be free, fair, accurate and legal, not achieved through shady and bloody means. For that must always only be a last resort in the battle for peace, prosperity and partnership for all peoples of all nations in the world.

We are also willing to establish direct contact with the Venissian Kingdoms in order to coordinate efforts to respect the will of the people and its government.

Sincerely,
Boleslaw Zalenski

We consider it of utmost importance that the will of the people is followed. But the people must be able to express their will freely and without pressure. We will thoroughly investigate the situation before we determine our stance. While doing so, we will act upon indication by the central government of Venissieux. Should the referendum indeed take place, then we would like to send observers as well.

United Kingdoms Remain Divided on Referendum

The Nanterre independence referendum has brought division on opinions from the sovereign states. As expected of the northern Kingdoms - both Brasschatt and Evreux believes in respecting the people's will for a referendum and its desire to cede from Avignon. On the opposite end Libourne and Orlais hold the referendum as illegitimate and illegal. The two factional division in Venissieux is expected due to political ideological differences - what is most surprising is Avignon's ambiguous stance. While Avignon has initially insisted that it is an illegal referendum, its absolute ruler King Cyril IV has been silent on his youngest son's recent intentions. Avignan delegates has declined to comment anything related to the referendum

However it was announced that a formal declaration will be made by King Cyril IV shortly in regards to the this recent development. Additionally there has been reports of Avignan army enlistees to be on standby for further orders from their capital and King. With the army put on standby alert without any formal stance on the Nanterre referendum - it appears the hope of independence is thrown into a precarious situation.

Referendum Declared Illegal - Army Deploys

After days of silence from King Cyril IV and the Avignan capital city Sevres, King Cyril IV has finally broke the silence on the referendum. He has declared that there will be serious repercussions for Duke Basile on issuing the referendum - which he further stated is illegal and in violation of the constitution. "There will be no referendum." King Cyril IV addressed to the press. "It is my duty to uphold the law and maintain the Kingdom's territorial integrity. Royalty or not; my dear son Duke Basile has committed treason to our Kingdom."

Failing to get a hold of local authorities in Nanterre and to maintain order within the Duchy, the Avignan Army was put on standby for further notice. The Avignan King has however issued the mobilisation of soldiers to cross the border. Military forces have been ordered to apprehend the Duke and secure the Duchy from further revolts. Authorities decline to specify their precise objectives in securing the Duchy. "There will be serious repercussions and consequences for the Duke's actions."

As the referendum has been declared illegal, the Avignan government has demanded all governments to pull out any observers present in Nanterre and cancel any plans for their planned attendance. Various foreign delegates have voiced their concern at Royeaux in regards to an excessive response to the referendum - citing the potential for conflict to erupt. The Brasschatte and Exreuxians in particular have voiced their opposition to the Avignan's refusal to allow the referendum. "This is a sorely disappointing development from the southern kingdom. Clearly reason cannot reach their ears," a Evreuxian delegate said to the Avignan counterpart.

Her Majesty's Government expresses its concern over the recent deployment of troops into Nanterre. Although we hope this will not cause a strain on relations between the Merteuil and Royeaux, the Government hopes a peaceful resolution can be solved.

Sirs,

The response by the Venissian royal government and the Avignan Kingdom are unacceptable to the Rzeczpospolita Wendziema. We will not tolerate a destructive conflict that will bring further ruin to the people of Nanterre, and worse yet will potentially bring death and destruction to the borders of the Wendowie. I have been authorized by the Assembly of Overseers of the Revolution and the Rzeczpospolita Assembly that the Wendowie shall issue a limited mobilization of our western forces in order to safeguard our western borders from conflict. I have also been authorized to announce that we refuse the Avignan Kingdom's demand to cancel our plans to send observers to the upcoming referendum.

Finally, I am authorized to issue our own requests: first, that the Venissian Kingdom stand down its military forces in order to maintain peace in the region and within its own borders. Second, that it either respect the will of the people and allow the referendum to occur, or announce its intent to improve the prosperity of the Duchy of Nanterre through extensive investments, and that such intentions are acceptable to the people of the Duchy of Nanterre and will promote partnership amongst the Venissian people.

We pray that the Venissian royal government and the Avignan Kingdom do not insist on refusing to listen to reason, for we shall insist upon our requests no matter the circumstances.

Sincerely,

While internal affairs is left to sovereign state out of respect for member states, the opposition to Avignon's response has triggered an appeal for the Venissian Court of Justice to review the legality of the referendum.

It is unfortunate to hear that Wendziema has to mobilise troops to secure the borders with Avignon. We do not wish to provoke conflict with Wendziema - but we would like to remind you that all member states have an obligation to defend our allies, which includes the Kingdom of Avignon. Should troops cross into Avignon we will see it as an act of aggression and possibly a declaration of war with the United Kingdoms of Venissieux.

No additional troops will be deployed in response to this news. The Venissian Central Command has issued the order to the Avigan Army commanders that their movements be limited to the ones dispatched earlier and no additional ones to be deployed and mobilised.

Avignon Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Avignon)

Duke Basile has committed treason to this country - he must be apprehended and prosecuted. The Avignon Army has mobilised to resecure the Duchy from the unlawful show of civil disobedience. We can assure you that we have no intentions of starting conflict within Nanterre and spilling it over to Wendziema. The people of Nanterre are happy and they only answer to the Avignon government - not to a neighbouring country that seeks to dismantle the Kingdom.

Her Majesty's Government is fully committed to maintaining stability in the United Kingdom. We, too, will see any aggression by foreign powers as an act of war and will coordinate with the central and regional governments of Venisseux in making a proper response.

Sirs,

The Rzeczpospolita Wendziema, being a union of peoples committed to the ideals of peace, prosperity and partnership, do not have any intention of initiating an offensive war upon any of our neighbors, our mobilization remains limited and its purpose remains to secure our borders. We thus are grateful that the Venissian Central Command shall urge restraint upon the part of the Avignan military, however, our forces shall remain on guard until this crisis passes. We are disappointed, however, that they shall potentially remain able to run amok in the Duchy of Nanterre and cause a great disturbance when restraint and cool heads are needed in this situation, especially considering the need to investigate claims in the area.

In regards to the Avignan Kingdom, however, we reject the claims that the Duke of Nanterre is a traitor to the Kingdom of Avignon, and that the people of Nanterre are truly happy within the Avignan Kingdom. Such a heavy-handed response to the call for a referendum, one intended to be observed by many neutral and foreign parties, can only be interpreted by the Rzeczpospolita as an attempt to stifle freedom in its crib. The dispute between a relatively detached government and the direct government to the Duchy of Nanterre is also disturbing to the Wendowie, and until it can be definitively proven otherwise, we maintain that the Duke of Nanterre has no reason to lie about the state of his people being the way they are.

We again request that the Avignan Kingdom refrain from its oppressive actions before it reaps serious consequences from the discord it sows in the Duchy of Nanterre.

Sincerely,
Boleslaw Zalenski

While we appreciate Coeurleon's commitment to the stability of the United Kingdoms, we feel that it will not be necessary to have our neighbours become involved in union matters should the worst scenario come true. We will keep in mind that Coeurleon is willing to come to our aid and thank you for your commitment.

As mentioned at the International House in regards to the Nanterre referendum, the Venissian Commission will be conducting a high level study and investigation on the Avignan demographic statistics.

Avignon Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Avignon)

The Avignan Government have and will continually assure its claim to be valid and accurate. It is treason for any one of the Dukes and local governments to hold a referendum without the explicit permission from our capital (Sevres). With the Duke's rejection to stand down, we are forced to apprehend him for his unlawful and irrational actions.

We will not stand down - the Rzeczpospolita and the international world can save their breath.

The Republic of Asylan feels at this time that it will only support the decision of such a referendum if the referendum itself is heavily monitored by independent observers. However, as per the ideals of this Republic we will have support the popular opinion whichever why this referendum goes. If the people decide it is time to leave the union of Venissieux, we will have no choice to support it, however if the opposite is true we will support their continued presence in Venisseux.

Trouble Brews In Royeaux

Announced earlier the Venissian Commission would be investigating and verifying the demographic statistics of Avignon. The team sent to investigate the living conditions in Nanterre however were denied entry into Avignon and turned away at the airport in Sevres.

The Venissian Commission has since then questioned the Avignan government in regards to denying their entry. "The Commission has no jurisdiction and right to be digging into Avignan matters," said a Avignan delegate. They have expressed their dismay over Royeaux's lack of moral support and trust with the Avignan government in the light of international condemnation, threatening to leave the union should things persist. The Venissian Commissioners were visibly frustrated with the Avignan lack of cooperation and communication.

Despite the setback, the Venissian Commission remains committed to investigate the matter.

It was announced earlier from Duke Basile that the length of the referendum will persist longer than a single day, citing the need to make it more accessible to residents in Nanterre.

Sirs,

The unwillingness of the Avignan Kingdom to cooperate with the Venissian Commission, a commission that would only confirm the claims of Avignon were they indeed true, is highly troubling to the Rzeczpospolita, and should be troubling to any observing this growing situation. The Wendowie can only conclude, based on the actions of the Avignan government, that they indeed have something to hide, and we thus applaud the Venissian Commission's determination to uncover the truth no matter the obstacles presented towards it. However, it is further troubling that the Avignan Kingdom is threatening secession over this issue, a declaration that demonstrates to the Wendowie just how desperate Sevres is to preserve the status quo, a scenario the people and their representative, the Duke, clearly do not wish to follow any longer.

The Rzeczpospolita therefore reiterates its demands to the Avignan Kingdom to commit itself to restraint and rationality in its actions, for this current path threatens the peace, prosperity and partnership of the people of Nanterre and, indeed, the international region as a whole. We also plead to the international world to recognize the folly of the actions the Avignan Kingdom takes and join us in urging them to cease and desist before the situation spirals out of control. We finally offer our full moral support to the people of Nanterre and Duke Basile in their efforts to demonstrate the will of the people, and urge them to hold on, for we are confident that the evil the Avignan Kingdom attempts to sow is doomed to die before it can blossom. History is on the side of the people, not the tyrants.

We are following closely for some time the crisis in Avignon. We have to state that a referendum is the direct intervention of the people in the politics of the state. For this we must also remind the royal cliques from the confederation that the days in which the people believed in the divine right of the kings. Now, the kings rule not because of their love of God, but because the people accept them, for that we want them to show the level of respect the people deserves and to accept their referendum.

Avignan Army secures Legnica

In the attempt to apprehend Duke Basile, the Avignan government released a statement to the press declaring that its army has begun securing Legnica - capital and largest city of Nanterre. Sevres has declared any unlawful authorities in Nanterre will be arrested and trialed for treason. Avignan government funded broadcasting channel Avignan Diffusion Corporation (ADC) has claimed that the locals have been supportive and the army has not met any violent resistance within the city and countryside.

The Government of Avignan has barred entry of Venissian and foreign press alike from entering Nanterre, citing issue of safety for journalists. The Brasschatte and Evreuxians have accused the Avignans of censoring the situation in Nanterre and misleading the press with false information, especially through ADC. Despite closing borders with Nanterre, both the Libourni National Nouvelles and La Orlesian Fois has been informed that a few independent journalists have crossed over the border into Nanterre illegally.

Both the Libourni and Orlesian governments have historically been allies with Avignan, but their support has begun to wither with the Avignan's unprecedented military actions. With all of the Kingdoms either condemning or remaining quiet on the matters, the Avignan government has find itself becoming increasingly isolated from the United Kingdoms in both support and open dialogue. It remains unknown whether or not Avignon will revoke its membership from the union.

The Asylan government strongly condemns these actions against a people who have shown an obvious and powerful desire to call a referendum. If a people do not wish to belong to a union, they cannot be forced into this. This action will only create more suffering and dispair for the Wendowie of Nanterre. For the rest of those in Venissieux, the effects of a split nation will begin to present itself, and may cause even more harm to what appears in many places to be an inharmonious arrangement.
