His Majesty, King Roderick IV, sends his most heartfelt condolences to the families of those that lost loved one in this disaster. His Majesty, has, upon hearing the reports from Makai, ordered all Royal Armed Forces Commands in the Makai Islands to make available personnel, equipment and supplies to aide in any rescue and relief efforts. He has also ordered the Royal Navy and Air Force to dispatch additional ships and aircraft to the islands to further aid in those efforts while Royal Engineers standby to deploy if and when needed.

The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of the Silverless Saints Cosmas and Damian expresses its condolences to the families of the victims of this most catastrophic and unfortunate disaster.

Dedicated to the provision of health and welfare services since its foundation in 1116, the Order will stand true to its mission to God and Faith, and will dispatch aid, including both medical and relief personnel and medical and pharmaceutical equipment and supplies.

Furthermore, we are eager to coordinate our efforts with the local and international medical services and agencies for the maximum possible effectiveness.

Albert Rudolf Ritter von Schneider
Grand Hospitaller

OOC: The Sovereign Military Order of the Silverless Saints is supposed to be a Knights Hospitaller old crusading order, and one of the four knightly orders of/in Wiese. The Grand Hospitaller is the "health minister" and "foreign aid minister" of the Order, so to speak.

It is sovereign, virtually outside Imperial jurisdiction as an entity, and has a 'symbiotic' coexistence with Wiese and potentially other Catholic countries in that it effectively forms Wiese's healthcare and welfare system, with financing from its own non-charity assets, donations, the Catholic Church and the Privy Purse of the Emperor and the monarchs of the Imperial States. Although a Catholic order, it would also be active in non-Catholic countries if allowed, and would operate clinics, orphanages, hospitals and so forth.

It is with deep sadness that we must hear of the tragedy inflicting which has severely inflicted our neighbours in the Makai Islands to the south. With good intentions and nothing but the safety and health of the people of the Makai Islands at heart, this administration will be sending medical aid as well as relief workers to help rebuild what this act of nature has brought.

TSUNAMI AID CONCERT A SUCCESS, $15 MILLION RAISED

You must be registered for see images

The Tsunami Aid Concert held this weekend was a reported stunning success, with over two dozen bands, singers and acts from around the globe preforming live for Makai citizens and tourists from around the globe at the Rapohonga Stadium outside Kahuna. Official figures released have confirmed that the multinational Concert succeeded in its aims, with $15 million being added to the already generous amount of aid given to Ra'tui since the Tsunami hit, by increasingly friendly Marquette and suprisingly Wiese. Cornavia and Anglyn's contributions were also well recieved, and Guianan and Kayagueyan pledges of support were all welcomed with open arms.

With Ra'tui slowly being rebuilt, the question remains- what to do with the old tribal city, and the many villages and islands and islets around Ra'tui which are home to the largely ethnic Makai Polynesian populace? Long considered a tribal backwater, the "true" cultural and ethnic core of the Makai Islands has long staunchly backed the Ithorangi Administration, despite the continuing lack of jobs and long-term economic development. Some have attributed this support to the virtual autonomy of the Tribal Councils, and the freedom given to live in the traditional Makai way. Yet many young Makai men and women are questioning the need to live in "traditional" palmwood huts and grass skirts and to live a largely subsistence lifestyle. Many want to follow the "Mainlander" example, and adopt Anglyic cultural mannerisms and ambitions, and become successful businesspeople and members of a more "Western" social structure.

"My father is a Fisherman. His father was a Fisherman. I do not want to catch fish with spears, when I can sell shares over the Internet, or log on to Twatter, or any one of many things that we can do if we were Kahunans."
said one young man we interviewed on Ra'tui, who wishes to remain nameless. Often there is great pressure at schools to learn well and succeed at examinations, but at the same time there is even greater pressure amongst the families to keep the children at home, and encourage them to stay by arranging marriages and promising generous shares of the family enterprise.

"There have been Education Iniatitives before, and the Ministry of the Interior has been very generous in its Scholarship Programmes, but there is a fundamental disconnect between the communities of Ra'tui and the Tribal villages of the Makai Archipelagos in general, and the commercial and business elite situated in Kahuna."

With low-paying manual labour and industrial jobs fiercely competed for by the Vangalan and Jizhoui immigrants and with high end jobs seemingly out of reach, for many Makai, the only option is to remain at home, living on government subsidies and in the Old ways.

It remains to be seen how, if ever, this problem will be tackled, as the Ithorangi Administration seems busier with its International Ambitions than anything else.

POPULAR RALLY LAUNCHES NEW LEADER!

You must be registered for see images

Kepano Maluhia is the name of the rising star in Makai Politics who has just been announced as the new Leader of the Popular Rally(Tahoera'a Huiraatira) Party. This announcement has been greeted with enthusiasm by Opposition supporters and political commentators, as the PR, the main oppositional party to Ithorangi's Conservatives, have been riven by internal divisions and ideological bickering these last few years, whilst Ithorangi has cemented his position as "Man of the People" through delivering incredible prosperity and development, at the cost of much of Makai'ai's natural beauty, turning Kahuna into a glittering pacific metropolis.

Kepano, however, is radically different from the bickering and aged frontrunners that have previously stood in opposition. He is younger, of mixed origins, and is a prominent Civil Rights Lawyer, having won many historic victories for the Rights of Jizhou and Vangalan immigrants to the Makai Archipelagos, aswell as defending Tribal communities against enroachment by unscrupulous foreign investors.

"Maluhia has made a name for himself taking on difficult and taxing cases for the benefit of the underdogs. Furthermore, His staunchly domestic politics, rather than Anglyic Internationalism, make him the perfect candidate for a Leader of the Popular Rally, which has always been about putting the People First." confirmed a spokesperson for the Party today.

This move comes at a time where, despite money flowing in from all corners of the globe, real questions are being asked about the future of not only the Makai peoples, but the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have come or were brought here to make a small handful of Anglyic and Makai businessmen very, very rich.

Weariness of Tourist oversaturation and the possibly deletrious effects of this on the pristine enviroment of the Archipelagos has also been highlighted as a factor, and Ithorangi's once strong grasp of Makai politics seems to be slipping.

Kepano Maluhia himself has remained tight-lipped, though he has confirmed that he has made a personal donation of $100,000 to the Tsunami Aid fund, and believes that Ra'tui can be made to work as a city for the Makai by the Makai.

With the elections only four months away, the sudden arrival of Kepano in what many had assumed would be an automatic victory for the Conservatives has now been called into question.

MAKAI ISLANDS CONDEMNS NUCLEAR ATTACK ON FREIHEIT!

You must be registered for see images

A Monstrous crime of unrivalled proportions has occurred in the contentious "rogue-state" of Freiheit, as a nuclear attack has left a reported 1 million people dead. This assault has led to worldwide controversy, with some saying that "Freiheit had what was coming to them" and others condemning the attack.

"This is an act of total barbarism, a conscious act of mass murder against a people by an unknown and ruthless perpetrator. The use of Nuclear Weapons is expressly forbidden by International Law." announced President Ithorangi in an emergency live broadcast to the country. "Given this attack, and our own past experiences with nuclear testing, we offer what aid we can to the survivors in Freiheit, whose lives will forever be blighted by these abominable attacks, and we hope that the country responsible will be held to account for its unprovoked acts of naked aggression."

Allegations of a Freiheit nuclear stockpile and ongoing crimes against humanity against the minority Otchi people have been acknowledged by the Government, but they state that "the indiscriminate and total nature of a nuclear assault can not be excused by the crimes of a government against which it was directed." Whilst the Makai Islands have long maintained a policy of neutrality in affairs, a special meeting by the Archipelagos Congress has agreed to provide whatever economic and medical aid is required by the people of Freheit.

"We know what we can provide is but a drop in the ocean of suffering this brutal attack has unleashed. But we give it freely, to victims of the most heinous and callous violent act imaginable." concluded the President.

Marquette Eurocopters,en route to delivery, and negiotiations to purchase fixed-wing aircraft, have been accelerated in the wake of this attack, and the government has pledged to dispatch up to 200 volunteers from the Makai Millita along with nearly a 1,000 aid workers to assist in alleviating some of the suffering in Freistadt.

While we assure the government of Makai that the attack was not that of a nuclear explosion, but of a radiation attack. A missile struck a Nuclear Power Plant, which caused an explosion of about 800 tons of TNT to go off, and now nuclear radiation is running wild through all of Freistadt. We welcome any aid the Makai government can give us, and offer our deepest thanks.

President Ithorangi prepares for Wiesan Imperial Birthday celebrations

With the Freiheit War in Freiheit virtually over, resistance pushed back beyond its formidable mountain range and its navy and air force virtually obliterated, many in the Republic have anxiously been waiting to hear news of the Makai contigent, dispatched over a week ago, and who have been patiently and steadily making their way to the other side of the world, to lend aid to the ravaged civillian population of Freiheit. Though war continues to rage in Aquitania, Aquitania has called for no new aid, and the Makai Republic has shown no inclination towards sending fresh aid their way.

Despite this, This otherwise commendable Humanitarian mission came as the result of a sudden and unprecedented level of unanimity amongst the Archipelago Congress, and led to the Republic voicing itself louder and more clearly in the General Assembly of the Council of Nations than ever before. Not since 1972, when the first independent Makai representative was sent to the Council over the objections of the Anglyn Royal Government, have our humble island nations caused so great a clamour in the Halls of the powerful.

"As President of the Republic, it is my humble pleasure to announce that the Relief Convoy, codenamed Operation Pikhea, will shortly arrive in Freiheit, and begin its mission of mercy to all." announced the President in a press conference last night.

The political stock of the Republic only continues to grow, as the Emperor of Wiese has cordially invited the President to attend his 100th Birthday celebrations. This invitation is the highest honour bestowed on the Makai Islands to date, and has been graciously accepted. "It is my fervent hope that, out of the Tragic horrors of the Freiheit War, a new age of co-operation and friendship will begin, not only for our humble nation, but all nations engaged in this endeavour."

Rumours abound that another member of the Wiesan Royal Family will also be visiting the Islands later, perhaps on an official vacation, adding to the growing reputation of the Archipelagos as the premier place to be seen if you are rich, famous or royal.

OIL CRISIS CLAMPS HARD ON MAKAI AIRLINES

You must be registered for see images

The Continuing Oil Crisis created by the Talemantros embargo has had a global effect on fuel prices, and Makai Airways has been forced to cancel over 20,000 planned holidays and ground two dozen planes as fuel prices skyrocket. As prices at the Pump continue to rise, the Ministry of Transport has urged Makai citizens not to panic-buy, and to practice "fuel economy in the home." Public Information has encouraged carpooling, and public transport has been allocated additional emergency funds to cover rising prices.

Despite the growing concern over the situation, however, President Ithorangi has remained cheerful and confident about the situation. "Tourists continue to enjoy our hospitality. Our belts may be tightened, but Paradise is still very much open for business. Europeans still want to make the most of the End of Season discounts and prebooked holidays, and our commercial revenue remains unaffected."

the Deepening Oil Crisis has hit fishermen and the migrant underclasses hardest, however, and many small businesses have had to abandon use of vehicles and standard fossil-fuel generators. For Green Lobbyists, however, the situation is a triumphant vindication.

"For years we have pushed for a Greener Makai, and have had some success. But Ithorangi's refusal to consider the abundant potential for wind, tidal, and solar energy in the Makai Islands is now harming the economy, and we hope that the people will pay attention, and remember this at the elections." said prominent Enviromentalist and PR-supporter, Jennifer Wahia.

Though the cause- and eventual resolution- of the Crisis lies within the purview of the European and Himyar Powers, the ripples that can be felt in our lives remind us that Makai is a part of the First World, and is as subject to the ebb and flow of the Global Market as it ever has been to the Great Implarian Ocean.

In other News, the Makai Expeditionary Force has shifted its mission from direct-aid to the Freiheitians blighted by the Ongoing Invasion, to one of mercy and aid for the victims of the Fascist Regime's insane invasion of Aquitania. Camp Hope, established in Northwestern Aquitania, operates in conjunction with Coalition Forces, and has grown to support hundreds of displaced Aquitanians, Otchi, and even a few refugee Freiheiters.

Colonel 'Enakai, Leader of the Makai Millita contigent tasked with safeguarding the Camp, has reported of the incredible exertions being made by Makai Republic volunteers, non-government workers, and millitary personnel to provide food, medical aid and shelter for the displaced of the War. However, a theme that has been difficult to ignore has been the overwhelming international focus on the actual combat being raged, and the "revenge" motiff played up by the Sarmatians and their allies in their devestating and brutal onslaught through Freiheit. Though it is hard to argue in favour of the Freiheit Regime, the needless suffering inflicted on its civillians, and the seeming disregard for the cause of the victims of the Regime- regardless of ethnicity- is an ugly smear on the Ongoing "Liberation" Efforts.

"We're here to save people from the Freiheit Regime. Who will save people from the Greater Sarmatians and their allies?" one NGO worker bitterly commented to our journalists.

Whatever the truth of this war, what will be remembered- here, if nowhere else- that a tiny nation a world away was able to alleviate some of the suffering unleashed, whilst the Greater Powers simply bickered.

We would remind the ape-men of the Makai Islands that not all the Great Powers spent their time with their thumbs in their proverbial arses. The Empire of Greater Sarmatia moved upon a very clear threat with decisive precision- and continues to do so.

Likewise, I would pose a question to the more intelligent monkeys amongst you- likely the Oikawans that you so callously allow to be butchered in the streets- how long do you expect that the Empire will tolerate the baited jabs and ignorant musings of your mouth-pieces? A gnat can only be tolerated for so long before it must be crushed and swept aside.

It also has not escaped our notice that the so-called "petroleum crisis" has not left your insignificant clutch of islands untouched. All logic would suggest that this situation will only worsen- for you and yours- in the near future.

We Remind the Greater Sarmatian Empire that the Makai Republic has a Free Press and liberal Freedom of Speech laws. If your nation takes offence at the opinions of the tabloids of our humble nation, we advise that you seek redress through the civil courts, if you believe there has been Libel. However, insulting and threatening our Nation will not intimidate us into in anyway restraining the rights of our citizens to speak and publish whatever opinions they please.

The "slaughter of Oikawans" confuses us, but we assume by the context of their objections they are referring to the ongoing Hunt for the Serial Killer dubbed the "Samurai Slasher" by the popular press. Whilst we agree this is a matter of concern, we assure the Sarmatian Government that the Makai National Police is working around the clock to bring Justice to this matter, and prevent further deaths at the hand of this racist, murderous madman.

We fail to see what concern our domestic issues are of Sarmatia's, with regards to the Oil Crisis. We are touched by such concern, however, and we heed their well-meaning warning, and shall be cautious with our fuel expenditure.

MAKAI MISSIVE SPECIAL EDITORIAL
By Head Editor John Raturanga

Recently the Greater Sarmatian Empire had its agents in the Makai Republic issue a formal complaint to the Republic in the strongest terms regarding the content of a front page article that was published recently by the Makai Missive. Whilst we are not privy to the response issued by our own Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have been allowed to see the complaint in full, and make our own retort regarding the content of the article.

Simply put: Sarmatia, we are truly, deeply, emphatically sorry that we didnt go further in our expressions of condemnation. You, the Greater Sarmatian Empire, have launched an overbearing and incredibly provocative wave of insults, threats and intimidation against Free Press bodies across the globe. For the benefit of our readers, we re-print below under the Fair Uses Act 1991 extracts from Two Sarmatian Comminques we have been privileged to see:

We would remind the ape-men of the Makai Islands that not all the Great Powers spent their time with their thumbs in their proverbial arses. The Empire of Greater Sarmatia moved upon a very clear threat with decisive precision- and continues to do so.
---------------------------------------
For the Godless apes of the so-called "nation" of "Vangala" to demand an apology of this Empire is akin to a band of overweight lesbians demanding an apology of the Almighty for the offense of menstruation.

In short, an apology will most assuredly not be forthcoming. Even in the event that your rightful overlords were to formally, and politely request such, it would be yet denied.

Both these extracts come from the same authors, signed on behalf of the Sarmatian Empire, and both show a breathtaking level of naked xenophobia, racism and blatant sexism that is as repugnant and offensive as it is deeply worrying.

That official representatives of a Superpower that is right now busily engaged in the shockingly brutal Invasion of Freiheit, a Country in posession of untold nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, a country that has actively begun to resurrect the dangerous League of Free States, and courting the known Imperialist Oikawan Empire as a close colleague, that their voice to the world, is filled with such naked aggression, is a sign to us all.

The Makai Missive enjoys a circulation of some 2.1 million copies a day, of which around 800,000 are bought on average. We are not a Great International Paper, and our website recieves a mere 1 million hits a day. Yet, despite all this, the Sarmatian Empire of its tens of millions, who have but one voice, one opinion coming from its puppeteered gutter press, have accquired a copy of our article, and despite their haughtiness, were evidently so intimidated by what we had to say that they sought to batter our Government into acting illegally to suppress our right as a Free Press to present our interpretations of the facts to you, the reader.

But, as offensive as our words may or may not have been, they cannot be as offensive as the manner in which Sarmatia seeks to redress its grievances with the world. Rather than seek to privately or politely ask a withdrawal of the article, or even to seek fiscal damages from Makai's Libel Courts, Sarmatia chose the sledgehammer of vitriol to insult its opponents, belittling themselves as small-minded, racist, sexist, backwards imperialists incapable of managing their tantrums.

In Conclusion, our stance is one not of fear or appeasement, but of scorn and derision. In the 21st Century, the conduct of Nations and the level of respect afforded them should and for the most part is, based on respect for Human Rights and the Free Exchange of Information. Sarmatia, apparently, is still stuck in the 19th Century, and believes that its Might, terrifying as that may be, entitles it to unquestioning global deference.

We only pray that other Nations heed this dangerous development, and do not allow themselves to fall victim to International Imperialism, as Jizhou has, as Jurzan has, and as Freiheit shortly soon will.

SARMATIAN OFFENSIVE A COVER FOR DARKER THINGS?

You must be registered for see images

One of a few photos smuggled out of Freiheit to our paper

The ongoing saga in Freiheit has been neglected of late in our press coverage, due to concerns about offending the Empire of Greater Sarmatia, and the need to address the developing Fuel Crisis in our own nation. Yet events took a sinister and disturbing turn for the worse, with word now reaching us that all non-Sarmatian International Aid is to be expelled from the so-called "Memorial Territories" where a Massive "Anti-Insurgent" Offensive is planned by Greater Sarmatia.

Operation Hope, the government sponsored aid-effort of the Makai Islands, is mostly concerntrated in Aquitania anyway, having never been allowed full access to the former country of Freiheit, all ports locked down tight by Sarmatian thugs. However, news of this expellation has forced President Ithorangi to recall what few reporters and aid workers were operating in the Memorial territories, and has asked that those thinking of staying behind "think of their duty to their families, friends and nation first, rather than selfishly endanger themselves."

With no eyes or ears in Freiheit to report on the developing situation, we can only rely on the heavily biased Sarmatian media for future news. However, we remind any Freiheitian or Otchi readers that the Makai Republic still offers Refugee Visas for Freiheitians, and if you can find your way to the borders with Aquitania, you can ask for Coalition Personnel to direct you to Operation Hope or the Makai Missive. Untill September 6th, we will be attempting to use what leverage we have to ensure as many are repatriated to the Makai Islands as possible.

We dare not speculate what is planned, but we implore the Nations of the Coalition, including Breotonia, Guiana, Anglyn, Marquette and others, to not allow themselves to be dictated to like this by the Greater Sarmatian Empire. The government of Freiheit is guilty of much evil, but its people should not have to suffer the cruel revenge of Sarmatia's soldiers.

HRH Grand Duke Jean III sends his most heartfelt thanks to the workers of Operation Hope for their unselfish work in bringing aid to those in need. His Royal Highness as well as his government recognize that Operation Hope will bring comfort to the Otchi that have suffered the most in this war, the innocent Freiheiters that now suffer from their government's horrendous deeds and the Aquitanians who have felt the savageness of those that would attack any who would oppose the evil that was being done within the borders of Freiheit.

Foreign Office

His Majesty's Government sympathizes with the concerns of the Makai Government but we feel that their accusations are unfounded. Despite the rather strong language emanating from the Greater Sarmatian offices we have not observed any state sponsored activities by their forces that would lead us to believe that they will not exercise their new authority over former Freiheit in a way that is less than reasonable or honorable. Obviously the situation is complicated and some measures that are seemingly harsh will be required to ensure order and stability in the area.

We continue to monitor the situation with a dedicated Carrier Battlegroup (designation CBG-Shadow of Intent) as well as regular satellite data. As it is we firmly believe and have no reason to doubt that involved nations are acting as best as can be reasonably expected given the situation. The coalition formed by the Council of Nations, which we firmly supported, sadly was unable to mount any meaningful operation despite the full support of the Royal Navy. With their failure we believe that Greater Sarmatia and its allies represent the nations doing the best at normalizing the situation.

Makai Islands Ministry of Foreign Affairs Memo

To His Majesty's Government of Breotonia. We thank them wholeheartedly for their reassurances, however, we are confused as to why His Majesty's Government felt it necessary to inform us of His Royal Navy's manuevers and the Sarmatian situation. We are unaware of any accusations that have been made by this Government against Greater Sarmatia, and our policy has always been one of silent conservatism. Whilst Hot Rhetoric may have been employed in the early days of the conflict, we assure His Majesty that no ill will is born towards the Sarmatian Empire by us.

OPERATION HOPE GIVEN ITS MARCHING ORDERS

You must be registered for see images

Freiheit/Otchi Women side by side in an Aquitanian Refuge Camp

The brief foray by this tiny Island Republic into International Affairs was given its date of expiry today, as President Ithorangi delivered a live press broadcast to the Nation, on the subject of Operation Hope.

Responding to concerns about the mounting cost of this Lifeline extended to Aquitania and the suffering peoples of Freiheit, and how much good was really being done by our small but tireless contigent, Ithorangi made it clear that Aquitania had extended its "most heartfelt thanks" to the Makai Islands for contributing the aid, and that hundreds of lives had been saved, with hundreds more given nothing more fundamental or basic than a quiet place to rest whilst the most apalling violence raged in their homes.

"Operation Hope was a most resounding success. Against the known benefits that our intervention has reaped, I cannot set a price too high, a price that was not worth paying. We have done what we went there to do, and any more than that is a welcome reward." stated President Ithorangi.

However, despite his warm words, he went on to state that, with Operation Hope concluded, a total withdrawal of all Makai personnel from Aquitania would commence, and be completed by October 1st. "We did not go there to fight, to establish a new regime, or to claim glory from the charred embers of a once proud nation. We went their to save lives and provide Hope and mercy for a people suffering in war. We have done this. It is time to come Home."

The shocking decision for so rapid a withdrawal has raised eyebrows from many commentators, who do not believe that the job is anywhere near done. However, with post-war talks amongst the Coalition and the Sarmatian Contribution shortly to begin, and with prices at the pump holding steady- just- at a severe price, it is clear that, politically and economically, this Archipelago can no longer afford to play with the Big Boys, and we must return to our quiet sandbox.

Though some may feel outrage at this pre-emptive withdrawal, foremost amongst them the trickle of Freiheiters who have made their way to the Makai Islands, seeking asylum and a new life in tropical climes, the decision is not without its supporters, and may be a savvy move, with Opposition Parties clamouring for a "repurposing" of Makai's foreign ties towards free trade and exchange of commodities.

Whatever the reactions, what began as Operation Pikhea, an unprecedented Trans-Implarian Supply Convoy to a beleaguered people, and became Operation Hope, a single, large camp where all could come and be fed, watered and sheltered from the raging storm of war, stands as a bright point in an otherwise grey history for the Republic of the Makai Islands.

HRH Grand Duke Jean III is saddened that President Ithorangi has made the decision to withdraw 'Operation Hope' when it will be needed now more than ever. Though His Royal Highness understands the motivations behind the withdrawl, he still invites those involved with the mission to stay as well as extending that invitation to other volunteers from the Makai Islands, and if not under their own banner, to work with Aquitania's own efforts or with other humanitarian organizations that have arrived or are on the way.
