In Review: Sander Rygaard, the son of a boilermaker and a seamstress, won the 1950 Presidential election on a platform that advocated the rejuvenation of nation's military defenses, economic reform and a bolstering of infrastructure. In the beginning he experienced an upward battle in building a military industrial complex and it wasn't until after the realities of the August Catastrophe sent economic shockwaves across the world that Sylvanian's warmed up to his plans of further expanding the military. It was at this time the Rygaard and the Libertarian Coalition led Continental Congress began plans of breaking out of Sylvania's political isolationism and began to forge ties with it's Occidental neighbors and the nations of the Old World, in doing so Rygaard found himself pitted against the Danish Imperium who viewed Sylvania's Republican system as a threat to it's domain, through several diplomatic exchanges and the strategic use of Sylvania's limited military and political clout, Rygaard and his government delivered several embarrassing diplomatic defeats to the Imperium and propelled the Sylvanian Republic into the limelight. In Review:Dr. Jaakko Martinheikki is the original founder of Martinheikki Anti-Insect, now owned by a consortium of Fennian chemical companies, and the leading developer of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) as an effective and economical industrially produced insecticide for the needs of agricultural producers and various disease eradication programs in the Fennian Union and abroad. In 1952, Dr. Martinheikki received the Human Advancement Award of the Kontula Institute of Sciences, Fennia's most prestigious commendation for persons that have been responsible for the advancement of human prosperity in fields of scientific and technological development. He is also a recipient of the Union Order of the Fennian Lion, Fennia's highest civic commendation. DDT has had a widespread contributing effect to the global increase in agricultural output. From 1953, it has been successfully applied in the Protected Territories of New Fennia as part of a malaria eradication program: After ínitial successes, the National Development Office has expanded DDT-based malaria eradication to the entire Protected Territories and gained funding to continue DDT sprayings for several successive years. In Review: Roberto Urbina was elected to the Chamber of Tribunes in 1950 and quickly became leader of the largest Liberal faction, the Democratic Union. Before the independence of Auraria, Urbina served as the appointed Governor of Naranjo and worked closely with Noe Casales and Reldon Vicario when the constitution was being drafted. Because of illness, Noe Casales could no longer participate in politics, so Urbina took over, leading the liberals in government. Urbina's legislative track record in Heredia was not substantial as his party never obtained a majority and lacked any possibility of overcoming the Conservatives' majority. However, Urbina became instrumental with Tribune Aureliano Zavala, organizing the Federal Republicans and was the principle author of the revised constitution. When Civil War broke out and Tribune Zavala was killed, the rebel faction turned to Urbina as the leader of the legitimate government and trusted him to guide the war for the fate of Auraria.
