M-4 Test Declared Success: Meribian Soviet Armed Forces and Soviet Meribian Strategic Arms Command officials declared the recent test of the M-4 'Devil Zophar' ICBM an overall success earlier today. The missile was successfully launched from a mobile launcher in central Nanza early last night, proceeding west. The missile's first and second stages were jettisoned over open ocean, self-destructing upon impact with the waters north of Pacifica and east of Oikawa respectively, with the third stage being jettisoned in the upper atmosphere to disintegrate on re-entry. The fourth and final stage, constituting the 'payload bus', continued on it's round-the-world flight to deploy it's dummy warheads into the Rezan desert south of the missile's original launch location. The SMSAC released a statement confirming that five of the missile's seven re-entry vehicles successfully hit "within acceptable ranges of their targets". No official statement regarding the other two warheads has yet been released.

The M-4 is slated to enter service in early February. Originally planned to replace older M-2 'Hell Mel' and M-3 'Del Alkirk' missiles, the Soviet Meribian Strategic Arms Command recently scuttled plans to deactivate the MSAF's entire M-2 arsenal by March, due to threatening statements issued by hostile foreign powers in the Council of Nations regarding Meribia's New Year's fireworks display, which included the subterranean detonation of a one megaton nuclear 'firecracker'. However, sources within the Meribian Soviet Armed Forces report that the M-2s could still be dismantled within a few months, provided foreign hostility and calls for an international armed intervention in the Soviet Republic lessen or end.

Some fifty M-4 missiles are currently planned for construction over the next several years.

Meryod Siege Turns Violent: The joint MCS-SMA siege of the Fundamentalist Disciples of Xen's Meryod compound turned violent yesterday when members of the polygamist cult attempted to break the siege with force. FDX members within the compound opened fire on Soviet Meribian Army soldiers of the 82nd Mechanized Infantry Division maintaining the siege while other members of the cult attacked Meribian Civil Security officers within Meryod itself. The gun battle raged in northern Meryod throughout the night, finally ending this morning as MSAF armored and air support arrived, leading to the cult's swift surrender. Some fifty fatalities are currently being reported, most of whom are expected to be cult members, and over two hundred arrests have been made. The Sub-Ministry of Justice has already issued a statement declaring it's intention to try the FDX members involved in the attack on charges of high treason, in addition to a number of outstanding warrants and charges for other crimes several recently-arrested cult members have not yet faced trial for.

This is not a drill. Coronadan forces have launched an unprovoked assault on the Soviet Republic near Reza. All MSAF forces are to immediately be brought to high alert. All reserve formations in the Reza district are hereby activated. Citizens in the Reza and Nanza districts are to prepare for immediate aerial bombardment by the enemy.
