Al-Magrab gears up for referendum

As a result of the abolishment of the EF-mandates, Al-Magrab will vote on its future relation with Eiffelland in the beginning of March next year. As it looks now, the Magrabbines will get four options to choose from:
  1. Continue as a colony of Eiffelland.
  2. Continue as a colony of Eiffelland until 1 July 2022 and then become independent in a defensive pact with Eiffelland.
  3. Independence from Eiffelland from 1 September 2022 onwards; the Eiffellandian troops will have left the country per 1 March 2023.
  4. Become a colony of ________________ (name of the country to be filled in).
  5. Other: ________________.

As it become clear, the referendum will give the possibility for the voters to fill in free text. The voters will have to vote for at least one option, but they can also choose to rank the possibilities in an order of preference. For instance, they can fill out an "Other" at point 5 and give that preference 1, then give full independence preference 2, and becoming a temporary colony as preference 3. It is also possible to just vote for one thing and leave the rest unranked; then it is clear that somebody wants just one thing. People will be encouraged to give a ranking though.
The consequence of this voting system is, that in theory the option getting the most preference 1 votes will not be the winning option, because there is another option which has so many preference 2 votes that it is clear that that option is favoured more.
If this ranking does not lead to an absolute majority, a second voting day will be held in April 2022.
