Bloodbath in the Arrière

The government of Serenierre has become quite vocal about a “royalist movement” in the province of Arrière. It does not try to keep a secret that it is using violence to keep this so-called movement under control, either. The stories about curfews and mass-arrests among people considered “ethnic Burgundians” are well-known. Furthermore, the official reason for the militarisation and the closure of the border between the Arrière and Bourgogne is currently an uprise in the border region initiated by a royalist movement trying to get the Grand-Duke of Bourgogne on the Throne, although originally the Government of Serenierre mentioned Burgundian attempts to bring Serenierre under the Crown of Bourgogne to be the reason, despite repeated announcements that the Grand-Duke of Bourgogne is not interested in the Throne of Serenierre.
However, up to now, the amount of violence used in the Arrière by the Serenierre government has been unknown. Apart from the official government reports, not much news reaches the world about what is really happening in the Arrière. The fact that this newspaper managed to get hold of a very detailed report about the current events in the Arrière can be called unique. This report consists of 100 pages in which people describe how the serenierre security forces act in the Arrière; 100 pages outlining mass-executions, abductions at random, brutalities and atrocities carried out by Serenierre security forces. The methods applied by the Serenierre security forces resemble warfare more than measures to restore order. The worst part of the story, however, is that the Serenierre security forces are fighting a war against barely armed people.
The Spiegel des Tages will publish the complete contents of this report in a daily supplement; this issue already contains the first ten pages of this report.

His Imperial Majesty's Government is deeply concerned at the reports of the Spiegel des Tages, concerning Serenierre's conduct towards Her citizens. If those reports are true, which Imperial Intelligence seems to confirm, the Marxist-Leninovist régime is indeed brutalising and terrorising its own citizens, so as to scare them into abandoning their hopes of a united Frankish realm and a different form a government. In a free and democratic society, such actions would be absolutely unhead of, since all people should be allowed to voice their preferences in matters of nation and government, yet it is no surprise that a régime which recently reinstated capital punishment, denying its people their very right to life in their own name, none the less, would take such brutal and disgusting action. Serenierre has proven to the world how incompatible its systems and beliefs are with popular rule and even basic human rights and dignity, as these reports show it for what it really is: a perversion of the Social Contract and an outright insult to humanity itself. We call on Serenierre's government to immediately halt this state terrorism of theirs, yet we are almost certain that our words will fall into the empty void, for Serenierre has long abandoned diplomacy and open discourse as a means of conflict resolution.

DULWICH, GEWISSEX, ENGELLEXIAN REPUBLIC,

The prosperity and stability of the Grand Duchy of Burgundy, by assuring to its own people the liberty to acquire the wealth of life, satisfaction and commodity, has evidently in itself empowered the populations of various northern regions in Serenierre to quietly, yet confidently consider substituting their own communist government for that of the Grand Duchy.

The Engellexian Republic can see no great transformation being accomplished, from these stirring romantic ideals of Frankish union, rather, the insistence on such a transformation will utterly disturb any and all of the principles upon which social order is based, in Serenierre, Burgundy, and possibly neighbouring States.

The events which have taken place, and continue to do so, in Arriere, have demonstrated to Europe that the people who live under communism, far from being persuaded by anarchical passions, desire only to be governed by free and rational institutions. They also prove to Europe that communist regimes, rather than defend the freedoms of their people, are found easily stirred into the mass destruction of those they proclaimed to serve and protect.

If the transformation of Burgundy and Serenierre into a united Frankish State could be accomplished admirably and, relatively, orderly, the Frankish unification question would have been settled by this very day. Far from being a cause of apprehension and danger to Europe, and, by immediate extension, the Engellexian Republic; rather, a united Frankish State would be a welcomed element of peace and stability in Europe by Dulwich. Unfortunately the idealism from Arriere could only be found in the province of Arriere. The remainder, and, by far, majority of Serenierre continues to endure under the violent domination of the communist regime.

The Engellexian Republic has no intention of supporting interventions into the troubles of Arriere, and Serenierre, and will adopt the policy of urging States and Powers to not even so much as discuss the theories of such intentions. It will suffice for us to call to mind that as long as the question of Frankish reforms shall not be solved, Europe cannot hope for a truly solid and sincere peace. There will always remain in Gallia a powerful cause of troubles and revolution which, despite the grossly despicable efforts of the communist regime in Serenierre, will incessantly threaten an outburst of insurrection and, possibly, war in Gallia.

But it is well to leave it to settle this question, until such a time that the people of Serenierre, and its communist government, are in a much more different position.

Dassau Flugzeugwerke introduces Sturmvogel

The Eiffellandian company Dassau Flugzeugwerke announced the introduction of a new jet fighter during a press conference. This new plane is a fighter-bomber and reaches a top speed of Mach 1.86. It can carry up to 2300 kg of weapons (bombs, guns and missiles). It is also capable to land on and take off from the new Pelasgian Poseidon-Class aircraft carrier, a type of aircraft carrier that will also be delivered to the Eiffellandian Navy.
Sources in the Eiffellandian armed forces indicated that the Navy will buy 40 Sturmvögel to replace the oldest J26M fighters; the replaced planes will be sold. Furthermore, the Air Force will replace the 80 remaining J18 propeller fighters with Sturmvögel.

Dassau Flugzeugwerke presents future series of jet passenger aircraft

The Eiffellandian aircraft manufacturer Dassau Flugzeugwerke presented its design for the new jet passenger aircraft during a press conference. Also the name of the new plane was unveiled; it will be called the Kranich (Crane). This plane will have a maximum range of 9000 kilometers, and will have a capacity of up to 189 passengers plus luggage; it will replace the Schwan. Military versions of this plane will be introduced as well. Actually, one military version will be introduced before the passenger version: The tanker plane will be introduced already next year. The first deal was also announced: The Eiffellandian Air Force will buy the new tanker plane, while the current K47 tanker planes will be refitted as bombers. A few Kranich planes have already been built; they are now tested for their future use.
Another new plane that was presented is the Warnstern, a plane equipped with two large radomes (radar antennas enclosed in a protecting structure that is transparent to radar). This plane will be introduced to the market already this year. Orders from the Eiffellandian Air Force have already been placed as well.

Homosexuals in Helgolandian prisons bashed up

The Eiffellandian newspaper Weissenfelser Rundschau announced in a press release sent to all radio stations in Eiffelland that it will publish shocking pictures of homosexuals beaten up by prisoners in Helgolandian prisons. The Eiffellandian Long Sea Island Helgoland is known within Eiffelland for the negative stance of the inhabitants towards homosexuality. Now the Weissenfelser Rundschau claims that it has evidence that inmates in the prisons of Helgoland structurally beat up the people who were imprisoned for homosexual intercourse on the island, and that the prison guards do nothing to prevent this.
As a result of the constitutional reforms in 1942, which turned the Eiffellandian Long Sea Islands into autonomous regions relying on Trier only with respect to defence, foreign politics and education, Helgoland and Rügen are also free to determine their penal codes. This leads to some differences in the legal codes between Mainland Eiffelland and the Long Sea Islands; things not punishable on the islands are punishable on the mainland or vice versa, and the minimum and maximum punishments vary. One big difference is that homosexual intercourse is forbidden in Helgoland, while it is allowed in Rügen and Continental Eiffelland. As a result, many homosexual Helgolanders leave the island for Continental Eiffelland, mainly Bremen.
The Weissenfelser Rundschau calls for separate departments for homosexuals in the Helgolandian prisons in order to stop the violence, or even the abolishment of the prohibition of homosexual intercourse on the island to avoid confusion about what is allowed where. To support this demand, it will show the number of gays from Continental Eiffelland who were not aware of the Helgolandian prohibition of homosexual intercourse and ended up in prison because of that. The government of the island was not available for a reaction yet.

King Albrecht celebrates 60th birthday in renovated Trierer Stadtschloss

The preparations are at full speed for one of the most important events in Eiffelland for this year. King Albrecht will turn 60 this Saturday. His birthday coincides with the re-opening of the Trierer Stadtschloss as the Work Palace of the King and the location for receptions and celebrations for the Royal Family, the Government and the Parliament. The Trierer Stadtschloss currently also contains a conference room that is large enough for the Staatstag to gather, to facilitate a future renovation of the Staatstagsgebäude.
This Saturday the King will re-open the renovated Stadtschloss with a birthday party for the Royal and Grand-Ducal Families in Europe, as well as for the higher noble families of Eiffelland.

Factories of Dassau Flugzeugwerke extended
Government announces extension of Navy and Air Force

During his weekly press conference, Chancellor Matthias Graf von Seydewitz indicated that the government decided to extend the Navy and the Air Force. As part of the Trier Concord Agreements, a new aircraft carrier of the Pelasgian Poseidon Class will be delivered next year. Originally, the Kaiser Lothar II would be decommissioned then, but as it stands now, this aircraft carrier will remain in service in parallel to the new carrier, which will be baptised Kaiser Friedrich I, as per tradition in the Navy that the flag ship is always baptised after one of the three Eiffellandian Kings who were also Holy Germanic Emperors. The future Kaiser Friedrich I will be twice as large as the Kaiser Lothar II. The reason why such a big aircraft carrier is bought is the fact that it is impossible to build fighters both capable to fly at Mach 2 and able to land on a small carrier like the Kaiser Lothar II. The new carrier was purchased specially for the Sturmvogel and the future Wassergeist. On the question from a journalist why Eiffelland would really need an aircraft carrier, the Chancellor replied that the main reason for Eiffelland to have aircraft carriers is that they are an aide for developing planes for the Naval forces, not only for Eiffelland but also for Pelasgia, Lauenburg, Aegada, Bourgogne and other countries. Furthermore, the future of naval warfare will not be face-to-face confrontations between navies any more; the future navies will fight each other on a distance. Another consequence of this development is that the current torpedo boats in the navy will be replaced with missile destroyers; furthermore, on the longer term, the cruisers will be replaced with missile destroyers as well. The cannons will not disappear completely from the Eiffellandian warships, but there will be more focus on missiles.
Another new development is that the modernisation of the air force will be accelerated. Apart from previous decisions on this matter, the air force will be extended with one wing (200 planes) of jet fighters in the coming 10 years. This will have consequences to the bombers, which will be decommissioned; the B32 in 1965 and the B47 in 1970.
A third new development is that the armed forces will buy more helicopters. The helicopter of first choice will be the Justinian made Sovrastia P16 helicopter, although the recent collapse of Justiza might make the delivery of this helicopter difficult. On a question from a journalist about this, the Chancellor replied: "We will continue to contact Sovrastia. Of course we hope that they will be able to build helicopters for us; should that not be the case, we will ask if we can get a license from them to build it ourselves."


Carnival season started

Today is the 11th of the 11th. Traditionally, this is the start of the carnival season. Although not an official public holiday, this is celebrated throughout Eiffelland. Next year carnival (or Fastelovend, like it is called in the Rheinland) will take place on 26, 27 and 28 February. From now on until then, there will be some carnival sessions during the weekends on a limited scale, until the party will really break loose on 26 February.

"Nazis fled to Eiffelland"
Government of Cetnik Empire notifies Eiffelland of Nazi terrorists

The government of the Cetnik Empire warned the Eiffellandian government for Nazi terrorists who seem to have fled to Eiffelland. The government takes this warning seriously. The Interior Ministry indicated that the police and the Staatsschutz are investigating all indications to the possible whereabouts of these terrorists. Furthermore, synagogues and all other kinds of Jewish properties which could be a target of these terrorists are guarded.
Up to now, it is only roughly known what these so-called nazis exactly want. At this moment, their only common idea is a blind hatred towards Jews. Sources within the Cetnik Empire also indicate that these people want a totalitarian society like the Cetnik Empire, but then in a more radical way, and mixed with theories about ethnic purity. The only reason why they are currently prosecuted against there is the cascade of terrorist assaults against Jews and Jewish properties conducted by them.

Government of Helgoland falls
Early elections in Helgoland in January

It was four o' clock in the morning when the Prime-Minister and the Vice-Prime-Minister of Helgoland separately left the Province Hall. This means that the Government of the Eiffellandian autonomous island of Helgoland has fallen over the question whether homosexuality should be legalised in Helgoland or not. The Government was a coalition between the Helgolandian Christian-Socials and the Helgolandian Sociodemocrats. The Sociodemocrats, together with the Socioliberals, had started an initiative to abolish the prohibition of homosexual intercourse in Helgoland; something that is strongly opposed by the Christian-Socials.
Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic in Helgoland. Contrary to the situation in Mainland Eiffelland and the Eiffellandian Autonomous Island of Rügen, the punishments for homosexual intercourse are severe in Helgoland. Recently, a newspaper unveiled that homosexuals have a harsh time in Helgolandian prisons. That coupled to negative comments from various sides was the reason for the Sociodemocrats and Socioliberals to plea for a legalisation of homosexual intercourse in Helgoland. Polls indicate, however, that the majority of the Helgolandians still oppose such a legalisation.

King holds Christmas speech on radio and television

This year it was for the first time in history that the King held his Christmas speech on television. At 1 o'clock in the afternoon, after the Urbi et Orbi blessing by the Pope, the King's speech was broadcasted over radio and television. The speech was recorded two days ago. One of the topics mentioned by the King was the crisis in the Kalahari Sea that almost resulted in a war.

Traditional carbide shooting started

It is a funny tradition. Each year in the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, the people on the Eiffellandian countryside in Emsland and Sauerland start the carbide shooting tradition. The game is simple. We take an empty milk can and drill a hole in the bottom. Then we put carbide and water into the milk can, and put the lid on. The carbide and the water react with each other, creating an explosive gas. The next step is crucial: Somebody holds a burning portfire near the hole in the bottom of the can. This has to be done at exactly the right moment; if you do it too early, there is not enough explosive gas. If you wait too long, the explosive gas diffunded away. But if you do it right on time, the lid is fired off the milk can with an enormously loud bang. Usually the lids are found several hundreds of meters away. This particular tradition in Eiffelland usually leads to a sharp peak in the sale of milk can lids in January.

King pays state visit to Trivodnia

Tomorrow morning King Albrecht III and Queen Marinka will travel to Trivodnia to pay a state visit to that country. The King and Queen will meet with the Presidential couple. The schedule for the coming days will be full. Among others a speech in the Trivodnian Parliament will be on the agenda. The relations between Eiffelland and Trivodnia have always been good, but recent international events resulted in the Trivodnian and Eiffellandian governments often giving similar statements and supporting each other's statements. One of the results of this state visit can be that Eiffelland and Trivodnia will diplomaticly cooperate more closely.


Elections in Helgoland

The fall of the government of Helgoland just before Christmas made new elections on this island necesary. These elections will be held on Sunday 22 January. About 15 parties registered for the elections, but polls only give the Christian-Social CSPH, the Sociodemocratic SDPH, the market liberal FDPH, the socioliberal LDPH. the communist KPE and the Christian-radical CPH any seats.

King adresses Grand Assembly of Trivodnia

In his speech before the Grand Assembly of Trivodnia, King Albrecht stressed the importance of a closer cooperation between Trivodnia and Eiffelland by referring to the long-lasting friendship between the two countries, but also by pointing at recent events like the Pogrom in the Chetnik Empire in which the governments of both countries cooperated closely.
One aspect of the state visit of King Albrecht to Trivodnia is the current plans of the Trivodnian government to modernise the armed forces, a decision that was met with scepsis among parts of the society of Trivodnia, a country that stipulates its neutrality even in the Constitution. That is not the only reason for this state visit, however. Also exchange programs between universities, research institutes and museums will be discussed, as well as important economic deals and agreements about intelligence sharing and more diplomatic co-ordination between the two countries.

Helgoland votes: CSPH regains absolute majority with only a small increase in votes
Surprising election results due to large amounts of votes for parties not meeting election threshold

Today’s elections led to quite a lot of surprises. The fact that the CSPH regained the absolute majority is not that strange in Helgoland; however, the fact that the CSPH managed to gain three seats with only a 0.9% increase in the number of votes is surprising. The reason is the large number of votes for parties that were previously not in the Parliament of Helgoland. A total of 15 parties took part in the elections, of which only six were already represented in the Parliament. The new Parliament will contain two more parties: The Sozialistische Partei Helgolands and the Trotzkistische Partei Helgolands obtained enough votes to enter Parliament. A total 6.8% of the votes was for seven other parties that took part in the elections but did not get enough votes for a seat in the Parliament. As per law, these votes were not taken into account for calculating the election results, leading to larger changes in the number of seats in Parliament than expected given the changes in the number of votes.

The SDPH is the party that had to pay for the fall of the government. The CSPH gained a small amount of votes, but now can govern alone again given its absolute majority, like between 1942 and 1954. Godebald Modrow, the political leader of the CSPH, already indicated that he would not seek for a coalition government and that the CSPH would govern alone: “Majority is majority.”

Also the FDPH, the LDPH and the KPE lost some votes, which only led to seats loss for the LDPH. The votes loss for the KPE could be linked to the recent events in Milesia and Cumbria. The votes loss for the SDPH and the LDPH is probably due to the initiative to lift the ban on homosexual intercourse in the island. This could be an indication that Helgoland is not ready for legalisation of homosexual intercourse yet.

New destroyers ordered
Changes in Navy announced

During his weekly press conference, Chancellor Von Seydewitz announced that the Navy will undergo substantial changes during this year. The most important change is the arrival of the new aircraft carrier, the Kaiser Friedrich I. The Chancellor also announced that the four oldest destroyers will be replaced with new Pelasgian missile destroyers, and that the four oldest destroyer escorts will be replaced with new Burgundian anti-submarine destroyer escorts. The arrival of the Kaiser Friedrich I will also lead to several ships being decommissioned. The old cruiser Emden, Eiffelland’s largest warship apart from the aircraft carriers, will be decommissioned, as well as all the torpedo boats.
The Chancellor mentioned the changes “necessary to equip the Eiffellandian Navy to a new era, where fire power as demonstrated by the battleships in earlier days does not matter any more, but aerial fire power does”.


Eiffellandian industries to invest abroad

During a press conference organised by the Eiffellandian automotive, electronics, aerial and biomedical companies, the CEOs of Borschel, Raimer, Borgward, Darner Werke, EKW, NDU, Magirus-Deutz, the Rathenau Gruppe, Dassau Flugzeugwerke, Beck & Böhm, Boehrig Ingelheim, Heppendorf, Medictronics, Karl Seiff and Agfas announced a coordinated initiative to invest in factories abroad. The main reason for doing so is that foreign markets can be served better in this way: “Indeed, it is possible to build everything here and send our products all over the world by ship, but we can serve our customers in Bourgogne and Engellex faster if we already produce in the neighbourhood. The same for our customers in Scania. If for instance we build factories in Telora, Ivernia or Cumbria, we can serve the customers there much faster. That is also the reason why we open factories in Loago.”
On a question whether Eiffelland would also invest in @Cumbria, Walther Rathenau said: “At this moment not. As per the Marxist-Leninovist doctrine, the factories are all possessed by the state. We won’t build any factories with the purpose to give them away. The situation will be different, however, when the Becker regime is overthrown. After the end of the civil war, there will be a lot to rebuild in Cumbria; we would love to be involved as well when the moment is there.” Upon a question from one of the reporters whether the Eiffellandian large companies were actively involved in overthrowing the Becker regime, Rathenau said: “No, we are not. The Cumbrians are the ones who have to stand up. We think it would be unwise if we do that for them, also because we would risk imposing a system the Cumbrians don’t want. Besides, how would it look like when we start overthrowing governments we don’t like?”

Godebald Modrow becomes Minister-Präsident of one-party government
King appoints new government of Helgoland

During a ceremony at the Island Government House in Aurich, Helgoland, King Albrecht appointed the new government of the autonomous island of Helgoland. As expected after the last elections on the island, Godebald Modrow of the CSPH will continue as Minister-Präsident of Helgoland. The new government of Helgoland consists solely of ministers from the CSPH, as was also the case between 1942 (when the island gained autonomy) and 1950. Modrow announced that his new government will follow a socially more conservative line than was the case under the former coalition government: "That is what the Helgolanders have voted for."

February is traditionally the month where the financial results of the previous year are published. The moment when that happens can vary based on the dates of Carnival, but most of the times it is during the first half of the month. Also this year. In general, the results were positive. Eiffellandian products have a good reputation based on their quality. Especially Borschel and the luxury car brands Raimer and Borgward had a good year. The same accounts for NDU, EKW and Darner Werke, although their results were influenced by the fact that they operate in a more competitive segment of the automotive market.
Dassau Flugzeugwerke had a very good year because both the Pelasgian and the Eiffellandian armed forces purchased many new aeroplanes. 1956 was also the year in which Dassau presented many new planes and unveiled some of their plans for the future. The results of this company, however, may be influenced negatively by the decision of the Burgundian government to start developing their own planes.
The Rathenau Gruppe is partly also operating in a competitive market, but made a good profit in spite of that. Also the biomedical companies Boehrig Ingelheim, Heppendorf and Medictronics had a good year, as well as Agfas and Karl Seiff.
Magirus-Deutz, manufacturer of trucks, military equipment, trains and agricultural machines, did not publish very good results, with only a small profit. The company board is looking into possibillities to turn 1957 into a better year.
