Depression and suicide: a national epidemic

While the Occident and the Thaumantic lands are battling all sorts of plagues derived from the
popularly called Engellpox, Caledonia is battling its own epidemic. Caught up in the high north, in a region with some of the least sunshine in the whole world, its people are battling depression and suicide on an alarming rate. In 2010, Caledonia became the country topping the list of states by number of death by suicide. The worst year has been 2011, with 25.5 per 100,000 deaths and while by 2018, Caledonia managed to reduce it to 16.5 per 100,000 death, it still remains a huge social issue.

Social and Economic analysts have described Caledonia as a bit of an odd ball on this end, as when the 1999 recession hit, there have been less than half the suicides that are taking place now in the country and they have started to rise once the recession has ended and the economic book in Dumnonia has started.

A more conservative member of the Aonach, Gòrdan GilleChrìost, member for Dunadd has commented that the rates of suicide can be observed to be higher in the regions where free economic zones where implemented: "I cannot observe that the people in places where the government calls 'economically free', the people outright prefer to end their God given lives. Can you imagine how bad must it be, if people are ready to risk an eternity in hell than such a life? I don't want to be dogmatic and condemn the consumerist culture of those regions though I believe that a problem is there too. I think that the idea that free markets make the people happy and free is thoroughly wrong as it transforms them into slaves. The people are overworked, overfed, over-entertained and thus they simply cannot care about the preciousness of life," he stated.

The Right Honorable Toiseach, Olibhia MacAnndra has stated that while the numbers have gotten better, depression and suicide are still grave problems that the country faces and the people suffering from them should not be ostracised by religious speeches about how much suicide is punished in the afterlife, but in prevention. Hence, she has created a new ministry in her cabinet, the Ministry of Suicide Prevention and Loneliness, which will work together with the Ministry of Health to ensure that by the end of her term, the suicide rates will drop to under 8 per 100,000 deaths. She was criticised by the more conservative members of the Aonach and by the religious establishment, which still deny that the high number of suicides can be called a national crisis and even go as far as to state that many of the numbers have been artificially inflated in the statistics.

As of yet, suicide is illegal in Caledonia and those who manage to survive it are prosecuted. But still, this doesn't stop many of the people as on average there are 8 suicides a day reported in Caledonia.

OTHER NEWS
Seashell portrait of Jesus: A special kind of icon has been blessed today at the Saint Piran Monastery in Dun Tain, where the monks have worked for over a month to unveil a seashell portrait of Jesus Christ.
Government stands fully against Loago: Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndras has stated yet again that no compromise is to be done with the minority government in Loago. The country has been declared by Caledonia to be decolonised and given to Wala administration, as Toiseach MacAnndra described them as civilised and catholic people.

Short News

Caledonia to boost oil production and petrol export: In a press conference held today, after a meeting with the Minister of Energy, Pàdruig MacPhaidein and the Chairman of the Vertical Syndicate, Raibeart Munn, the Director General of Boreal Oil, Rob Granndach, has stated that the corporation will boost its production in 2019 from 1.5 million bbl per day to 1.7 million. This comes after Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra has stated that Caledonia needs to return to her status of main supplier of petrol products to many of the world's nations. At the same time, the boost has been called to cover for a plan the government has set in motion to save the Kingdom of Elben that has been grounded to a halt after Kadikistan has begun an embargo of petrol products against it and also to cover for the general rise of post-war demands, brought by the need for recontstruction in Polesia and Occitania.

The dawn of Caitish medium education: Ten schools in from the Votadinian towns of Dun Tain, Puballan, Killanndra, An Rubha, Calasraid and Uig have been selected to begin the process of transformation towards Caitish medium education. Caitish language is the last P-Celtic language existing and has been at times oppressed by the pro-Caledonian authorities of the north. Since the fall of the National Syndicalist regime, the government has recognised Caitish as a national language, but even so, no national curricula has ever been organised to teach subjects in the language. Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra, has been seen as a fighter for the rights of minorities and has personally taken the issue in her own hands. Under the new legislation, the local school inspectorates have the right to request the turning of the medium of education from Caledonian to Caitish, as long as the school is situated in a region where 80% of the inhabitants are Caitish or where there is unanimous support from the parents to make the switch.

Toiseach to meet with the CHC: Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra has announced today that she has made the Loagan Crisis a priority and for this, she has announced that she has invited in Dun Eidyn the board of directors of the Caledonian Himyari Company. As of yet, the CHC is seen as propping up the minority government in Maseru and should Dun Eidyn manage to bring the CHC to the fold, Loago might return to normal, back into the family of nations that is the Obsidian Union. While until now, the CHC did not want to negotiate with Caledonia, it is believed that the recent offensives of the Loagan League of Communists and the great losses the Security Forces have suffered, might have turned the tides and now the CHC might be ready to begin the peace process and the return back into Caledonian legalism.

Short News

Gòrdan GilleChrìost threatens to sue Ostmark: The unofficial leader of the arch-conservative faction of the National Union, Gòrdan GilleChrìost, has stated today in a press conference that he will go later this week to the Dun Eidyn tribunal to sue the People's Republic of Ostmark. He stated that he feels disgusted by the misappropriation of the name National Syndicalist by the communists in what he called a perversion of the integralist, catholic and corporatist values the Caledonian party had over its 80 years of existence. The National Syndicalist Party has been created in 1905 and has been the vanguard of the Caledonian nation from 1957 to 1985 and afterwards it has been reformed into the modern day National Union. The conservative members of the party feel that the communists of Ostmark have taken the term National Syndicalism with the sole reason to pervert its legacy and reassign it to the anarcho-communist ideology.

Last sunrise in the high north: This morning the people of Innse Cait, Dun Tain, Dun Garan and the northern coast have bid the sun a farewell, as for the next 60 days, the sun will never rise thanks to the coming of winter. While the Caledonians and Caitmen living in the high north have been used to the polar nights, the beginning of this part of the year boosts tourism in the high north, with many southerners seeing it as an exotic element of life in the frigid north.

Olibhia MacAnndra calls the summit with the CHC a success: The Right Honorable Olibhia MacAnndra, Toiseach of Caledonia, has stated that the meeting with the Caledonian Himyari Company has been a full blown success and that life in Loago is likely to return to normal soon. The CHC has been hit by grave economical problems as it found itself deprived of the world market in the aftermath of the coup d'etat organised by General Calum MacMhaoilein only Eiffelland recognised the new political situation in the country, but with the war raging, it nullified all advantages to that. The Toiseach has called for the creation of a national unity government in Loago and the creation of a triumvirate which will represent Caledonian, Wala and Fante people. She stated that the White Army is ready to intervene to reinforce the Security Forces in their fight against Loago and has also managed to get a promise from the CHC that civilian rule will return in the state.

Saint Aindreas of the North Celebrations

Seen as one of the most important religious celebrations in Caledonia and the whole of Celtic Scania after Christmas, Easter and the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Aindreas of the North was the student of Saint Palladius, who converted Ivernia to Christianity and together with Saint Piran worked together to convert the Caledonians and the Caitmen. The 23rd of November is considered a bank holiday by Caledonian law only if it falls on a Friday or a Monday, whereas by Caitish laws, it is considered a bank holiday in any circumstances.

The story of Saint Aindreas says that after Saint Piran managed to convert the Dumnonii and the Deirans, Saint Aindreas went to the north in the Caitlands of Maetia and Votadinia to preach, but he was captured and became a slave, until he was executed for trying to escape. He was killed a week before the day of Saint Andrew the Apostle and the legend says that he asked to be crucified on an X-shaped cross, rather than beheaded to follow on the footsteps of his namesake.

Brendan Cardinal Gall, has led the ceremony at the Saint Aindreas of the North Cathedral in Dun Glas today in which he blessed the people, both Caitmen and Caledonians, his Apostolic Majesty, High King Mael Coluim V Blacach and the Gallowglass units that are now preparing to be shipped to Loago to pacify the Commonwealth and defeat the atheistic and bloodthirsty Loagan League of Communists. Volunteers from the Elbener Brigade that are to join the Gallowglasses have participated too at the ceremony, together with the ambassadors of the Kingdoms of Elben, Gunnland, Geotri and Jyskerige-Ostveg, the Empire of Pelasgia and of the Republic of Auraria. The mass was held by Cardinal Gall in the most impeccable Tiburan, showing thus his dedication to the Tiburan Church and his years of experience in serving the interests of the Holy See.

While the Glasian people have come up to the ceremony, many of the other Caledonians haven't been as ceremonial and respectful and have used this small holiday as a way to escape the urban environments and enjoy the snow in the mountains. The CaledRail trains leaving Dun Eidyn for Langaim, Monadh Rois and Alamhagh had been fully booked and more services needed to be added to those destinations this morning, as the people are going either to the skying resorts in the mountains or to the thermal spa resort of Langaim.

OTHER NEWS
The Prince's New Internet Connection: Starting out as a pamphlet and turning it into an absurd comedy, the book by Peadair Catan has become a sensation in the Caledonian literary circles. The book pokes fun at the Justosian presence on twatter and the general ego of the people using twatter.

Short News

Caledonia to offer asylum to Engellexic runaways: The Toiseach, Olibhia MacAnndra, has met today with the cabinet and has promised that the Runaway Bill will be sent later this month to the Aonach. The Bill states that the the recent developments have turned the Human Commodity System in Engellex from a scheme meant to rehabilitate prisoners through labour into an outright industry meant to create an extremely cheap workforce. They have condemned the abuses of the system which they state that are done specifically with the scope to put in chains and in indentured labour more and more people, without giving them real chances to be rehabilitated. As a response they promised to push to the Aonach the bill which will make Caledonia offer asylum to any runaways from the Human Commodity System. Even so, the Toiseach stated, should they be charged, they will still face trial in Caledonia, but she promises a more human and just one.

Conservative Caledonians protest against joining CoN: "We will be selling our sovereignty to the Gunnish and the Elbeners and we will invite the continent to meddle in our own affairs," stated Gòrdan GilleChrìost in a debate yesterday on RTC1. The new issue comes after there have been many discussions regarding a possible Caledonian ascension into the Council of the North. The conservative wing of the National Union has called this potential ascension as a grave hubris that will result in surrendering Caledonia's sovereignty and will pull the country into the disastrous affairs of Gallia-Germania.

Government to bail out the CHC: The results of the summit have been published. In return for the end of the dictatorship in Loago and the restoration of the democratically elected, civilian government, Caledonia will buy 40% of the shares of the CHC, thus bailing the company out of its economical problems. As the previous civilian government, led by Sean Manyika has threatened to nationalise the CHC, a military coup took place this time last year, and put General Calum MacMhaoilein in power. As only Eiffelland recognised the new regime, the CHC, which was seen as the main element propping the military government, found itself more and more isolated and with grave economical problems. The end of the military regime in Loago will bring the country's liberal democratic constitution back into effect and will return the Commonwealth back into the fold of the Obsidian Union, through which it can freely trade with Caledonia and Cabaon.

Infidels,

We do not regret to inform you that in supporting the 2 kingdom's unprovoked, destabilizing, unjust attack on our Holy Kingdom, your government has engaged in putrid, bellicose rhetoric of its own. Your nation has received classification: hostile.

Due to this, on my order, standard protocol is as follows: All Caledonian citizens, diplomats, interests, etc have until 12 AM Wednesday, Justosian time, to leave Justosia. Failure to abide by this generous time frame will result in immediate apprehension on belief of spying. With the full legal weight that accompanies that penalty.

Also, all Caledonian assets within our Holy Kingdom are to be seized immediately. Caledonian products shall be banned. Diplomatic relations on all formal levels are to be ended. A travel warning is issued. You are more than welcome to lobby for an extension to this deadline. A formal, sincere apology should accompany this.

May God Yahweh, Christ Yeshua, & the divine National Justos Episcop Church bless you.

Government Royale de Justosia
Your Majesty,

I have received your communique. It has heartened me greatly. It would appear your Foreign Minister Ros & mine fell from the same spicy tree. I appreciate greatly this gesture. While my Foreign Minister will remain so, it would be foolish to have him continue to minister to your kingdom. I shall henceforth appoint a sole ambassador to your nation. To be announced as soon as found.

There is a significant expanse between our nations. Yours is strongly Tiburan Catholic, we are ardently Protestant. It would be a lie to call this chasm small. It would also be a lie to deny my personal disaste for the religion which murdered would have been members of the founding House de Francisco. However I believe Europe has, or at least should move past holy wars.

Let this row be quelled. Let us at least try to mend differences.

The Republic is Caledonia's most important Engelsh language newspaper, published since 1932 - 28th of November - 15 Tasdain

Caledonia normalises relationship with Justosia: "We have gone past the point of sectarian politics in our histories and thus we should act more mature," stated the Right Honorable Mael Coluim Blacach, President of the Commonwealth as he used one of his mandates to retract a governmental communique and to request the sacking of the Minister of External Affairs, Lucas Ros. The diplomatic row seems to have subsided as the Justosians have also appointed Prince Francisco-Francois to be his country's ambassador to the high north. Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra stated that she too was extremely disturbed by the completely out of turn remarks by Lucas Ros and she has appointed Calum Seadh as the new Minister of External Affairs.

Task force on the way to Loago: The 3rd Gallowglass Division, together with the Elbener Brigade have left a few days ago Dun Eidyn and are on their way to southern Himyar to bring peace, stability and democracy to the biggest member state of the Obsidian Union. Under the command of General Eoghan Mac a' Phearsain, they are to arrive in a few days in Maseru, where the military government will be disbanded and replaced by a national unity government. As per the discussions between Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra and the board of directors of the CHC, the Company will end propping up the military regime and will help pave the way for the rule of law and democracy in Loago and in exchange it will be bailed out by the Caledonian government.

Centuries old alliance remembered: A dinner party has been organised today at the Aurarian Cultural Centre to celebrate the world's oldest, still functioning political and military alliance. The Treaty of Solis, signed by the representatives of the Aurarian polities and the Mormaerdom of Dumnonia in 1358, has been inherited by the Kingdom of Auraria and the Kingdom of Dumnonia, then by the Kingdom of Caledonia, then by the Republic of Auraria and now by the Commonwealth of Caledonia. This December, the centuries old alliance would be 660 years old and even if Auraria and Caledonia have passed through some times strained relations, the last one being the National-Syndicalist regime in Caledonia, the alliance stood adamant to the ideals that united both the peoples.

Fall of Empire Launches the National Corporatists to the Top

The scandal started by the defection of the ex-SDC general Seathan Forsaidh to Kadikistan and his calumnious disclosures have thrown Caledonia into a path of isolation or ostracism, as countries painted our homeland in the worst colours. Pushed to the limit by internal party opposition, the loss of the coalition and political alliances, street protests, and the impending general elections, Toiseach Olibhia MacAnndra has decided to pursue the complete retreat of Caledonia from Loago and Cabaon, thus ending the nearly 4 centuries long Obsidian Empire, which at its height spanned on four continents.

The elections proved to be a disaster for the mainstream parties like the centre-right Ar Dùthaich and the Turnip League, but also for the left-wing Seoradh and Sìol a Tuath. The National Corporatist Party was the only political faction which has won seats in this election, coming up with a grand total of 320, out of 590. It is one of the biggest victories in the recent history of Caledonia for a single party. The Party of the Left is the only other party that managed to keep the seats it had, holding on to their 20, but all the other mainstream parties have lost nearly all their support.

The victory of the National Corporatists has been received with celebrations on the streets of Dun Eidyn and the main cities of Caledonia, with the exception of Mondadh Rois, which is the centre of the political power of the Party of the Left, but with fear and anxiety from the political and economic elites in the country. Some analysts have already started to predict that the days of the National-Syndicalist dictatorship are soon to return, as the National Corporatist Union is know for being apologetic towards the policies of the old regime.

The leader of the Union, Nechtan, is set to become the first Caitish Toiseach in the history of the country. He is known for his social conservatism and for his close relationship with the Catholic Church. Nechtan has joined the National Corporatist Union in 1992 and has changed in time the form of the party, getting rid of the futurist and revolutionary elements of the old National-Syndicalist Party and has made the party closer to the old reactionary and traditionalist elements that dominated the anti-communist and anti-Prometheist movement in the late 1940s and 1950s. The main difference is now that the party is entrenched in republicanism, not wanting to revive the monarchy that was disbanded in 1957.

The same day with the general elections, the Caledonians were called to also vote if they want the country to join or not the Council of the North. Before the Forsaidh Affair, pools indicated that the majority preferred to stay away from it, but the recent scandals seem to have shattered the idea of Caledonia being a strong imperial power which could remain strong on its own. The results were 55% for joining the CoN and 45% against it. The referendum is binding and thus Toiseach Nechtan is bound by law to seek ascension into the alliance.

It is expected for the Commonwealth's relationship with Gunnland and Elben to improve greatly as now Caledonia instead of being the Prometheist and liberal dominated island in a sea of conservative catholic states. Many foreign analysts have associated the National Corporatist Party of Caledonia with the Integrity Party in Gunnland, stating that they are very similar.

OTHER NEWS
Tensions rise in the Hamar Sea: Pelasgia, Auraria and Shaeioumlah mobilise their fleets to push the Justosian heretics back to the Implarian archipelago. The Poblachd newspaper salutes the navies of Auraria and Pelasgia and wishes them luck in the future, should they need to fight more pests coming from the south.
Returnees are coming: Caledonians who made a good life in Loago and Cabaon are now pushed to leave the countries where they lived in for more than 3 generations. Dun Eidyn calls it an international tragedy and thanks the Cantignians for their support during those hard times.

Office of the Foreign Minister
We understand nations seemingly collapsing, & losing wars, such as yours feel the need to project. Nevertheless, you embarrass yourself.

The previously announced & legal defence exercises with our formal ally the Occitan kingdom were completed last night without interference. Our more capable naval forces out maneuvered & strategically embarrassed the larger, joint war force. Unlike Caledonia, the Great Southern Kingdom of Justosia has never lost a war, & never will.

Out of personal & righteous Episcop compassion for the long suffering citizens of your nation, I tell you good people that there are better shores open to you. Justosia is a virtual paradise. You need not endure this nation's collapse. Defectors, or should I say more defectors, are also welcome. Viva Justosia.

OPEN COMMUNIQUE

The government of the Commonwealth of Caledonia wishes to iterate the fact that An Phoblachd is an independent newspaper which publishes the views of its own editors and should never be seen as an official newspaper of the government, the way JNN is in your very own country. Hence, the editors have the right to give their own opinions and criticise not only the government of their home country, but the whole world too, Justosia included.

Secondly, what has been described as "fall of the empire" is truly a dissolution of the Obdisian Union and an end of a chapter, it is far away from representing a national collapse, as both Cabaon and Loago have received home rule since the late 1940s and how it has been decided to completely cut the ties which were keeping Caledonia bound to its past, making it unable to fully dedicate itself to its future.

Thirdly, no normal military exercise lasts only seven hours. They they were set up like that, they were meant only to waste valuable resources in moving a carrier group to the Hamar Sea. While the Justosians present themselves as so great that they out-flanked, out-manoeuvred, out-everything the Pelasgians and Aurarians, they should out-smart themselves and see the reality. They ran away like cowards because too many people start to see their preposterous actions and have mobilised their fleet to keep them away.

Fourthly, the only war the Justosia is continuously boasting with is the suppression of a nationalist guerrilla in Brecosta, which is quite lame, considering that neither Kadikistan nor Xinhai were supporting them as they were bound by the SQT with Pelasgia. Justosia has never lost a war because it never fought one, and will never loose one because it will cower and run away like they did in the Hamar Sea.

Fifthly, It is amusing to see Justosia asking Caledonian returnees to move to their lands, after only mere months ago they were deporting them and freezing assets. What legitimacy a nation that does that still have? Especially knowing how the Aurarians and Pelasgian are treated, currently, while they haven't retaliated. Justosia is exactly a virtual paradise. Virtual and imaginary.

Lastly, we are now expecting to see the threatening messages coming from you and probably receiving personal sanctions or economical ones or whatnot. It is just the way the Justosians want to be seen in this world, a bunch of aggressive bullies who can't do more than yell at people, invent imaginary enemies and sanction everyone. We find it amusing and highly hypocritical for Justosia to welcome more defectors, especially when they present themselves as the great anti-communist fighters. But we can only wish them well back and hope that Kadikistan and Xinhai will receive a wave of political asylum seekers from the south too.

Signed,
Lucas Ros
Minister of Foreign Affairs

Nechtan sworn in as Caledonia's new Toiseach

In a ceremony organised at the Taigh Poblachdach, Nechtan has been sworn in as Caledonia's newest Toiseach. Following a long line of political leaders, Nechtan has become the 8th Toiseach of the Commonwealth of Caledonia and the 69th Toiseach since the unification of the northern principalities to form the late High Kingdom of Caledonia.

Nechtan is one of the few leaders of Caledonia that comes from the Caitish minority, a P-Celtic population living in the north-western fringes of the country, on the windy and frozen shores of the White Sea. He has been a member of the National-Syndicalist Party during the late regime and afterwards was one of the founding members of the National Corporatist Party, calling for a reformation and modernisation of the Syndicalists in the wake of the adoption of democracy, but after the 1999 economic crash, moving towards a reactionary form of traditionalism and corporatism.

Many leaders of both the An Duthach and Seoradh parties, the mainstream centre-right and centre-left parties of Caledonia have condemned the events that have pushed forward the victory of the National-Corporatists, Olibhia MacAnndra, the ex-Toiseach of Caledonia going as far as to call the election of Nechtan a "national tragedy, very similar to the 1957 war". There have been many that have condemned her for using those terms and calling her out for disrespecting the memory of the veterans of the Winter War. Even so, others like the leaders of the Turnip League has accepted their defeat and hailed the victory of the National-Corporatists as a continuation of democracy, rather than its succumb.

Nechtan has been seen as socially conservative, condemning abortions, divorce and homosexuality, but at the same time he has been observed stating that "as long as Caledonian laws give you other options, such as contraception and civil partnerships, why would one choose to soil sacred marriage with divorce and end lives through abortions?" while for the issue of homosexuality he has stated that "we do consider it a sin, but it is and issue between you and God. We do not believe that one should boast their sexual lives on the streets, no matter of their orientation, nor do we believe that we should violate the privacy of one's bedroom". All those political positions are putting him at odds with other traditionalist and integralist leaders like King Friedrich Maria of Elben or Leader Blackthorn of Gunnland, but at the same time it might draw the irk of the extremely liberal Aurarians or Engells. Even so, he is continuing a very moderate albeit conservative tradition on those social issues that was set up first by Toiseach Ewan MacPherson in 1976, when he became the leader of the National-Syndicalist Party.

As he swore on the Holy Bible to protect and respect the constitution of the Commonwealth of Caledonia, many have observed that Nechtan is the first Toiseach to also do the cross sign after swearing the oath and to kiss the cross offered to him by Cardinal Gall, who came all the way from the Herzogenrode Abbey to Dun Eidyn to participate at the ceremony. The Cardinal has stated that the northern republic has turned back towards the path of light and it hopes it will form a strong bond with Elben and Gunnland to further the interests of Christians everywhere.

"A new era is dawning, as I hereby declare Caledonia to be free from the shackles of Prometheism which has tainted its policies since the mid of the 20th century. We are now free to pursue what the National-Syndicalists were building. A strong christian nation which is not tied to any sorts of failed territories from far away lands, which are dragging us down. What we have seen this January with the end of old-partyism and the return of the National-Corporatists was effectively a national revolution. A new, modern form of revolution, where people have come up together to enjoy their rights as citizens of Caledonia and have brought our country back to life, as they have rejected the poisoned influences of corrupt politicians," stated the Right Honourable Nechtan, as of today, Toiseach of Caledonia.

The new Toiseach has stated that he will offer later this week the list of members of his cabinet for the government to be sworn and for them to begin the work, with the ascension into the Council of the North being the first issue. The office of the Toiseach has also stated that immediately afterwards, Nechtan will be going on a pilgrimage to the monastery of Calasraid a place known for its Marian apparitions and to meet with Abbot Ronan, the only known stigmatist alive.

Office of the Foreign Minister
My office, & that of my Crown Sovereign deeply regret the current state of affairs with Caledonia. As the Great Southern Kingdom of Justosia increases its northern footprint, yours was an interesting nation that we always wished to tread lightly with.

However, sadly, the conclusion is reached. Due to your state's past bigoted rethoric against our religion nationale, & latest support for attempts to drive Himyar into war, we are no longer able to recognize this your current government.

We will be happy to revisit this issue when a new government or at least new Caledonian head of state takes power. May God Yahweh bless your people.
