Religious Movement in Eastern Songa Turns Ugly

Local authorities in the Souhé region of Eastern Songa are preparing for conflict with a local Islamic faction. The Islamic Development Movement was created in 2015 by local imam Abubakr Daramy. Daramy established the organization with the intention of targeting poor Songan boys from across the country. Daramy's messages were not on the local police force's radar at first, but after gaining a steady amount of followers Daramy began denouncing the Songan government and its' workers. Daramy then began denouncing western culture. At this point, Daramy was gaining attention throughout the region. Some people were absolutely disgusted by his words, while other began following his preaches. The preaches slowly descended into Daramy stating how he was 'sympathetic' with Jihadist factions from decades ago and how they had the right to defend their land. Local police forces heard of this and were given the orders to search Daramy's house in the village of Wassémala. They found nothing that could have aided in his arrest, and therefore he was allowed to continue preaching. Daramy also started to gain an online following in other parts of Songa. However, as of last week, Daramy did not appear in his complex to preach, and instead put up a video on his website, which was taken down. The video showed Daramy in a building with a black flag draped behind him. He held a rifle across his lap as he sat across the camera. Daramy then began to praise former Jihadist organizations that operated in Songa, and then called for a new Jihad in Songa as well. The police were notified of the video and began a crackdown of the operation. They raided the complex that was the home of the organization, only to find it completely empty with no one inside. Arrest were made throughout the region, and many of Daramy's followers were detained for questioning. In response to this, one of Daramy's followers rammed his truck into a group of policemen during their morning jog. He then got out of the car with a machete and a pistol and began firing upon the policemen. Four policemen were killed and 8 more were injured. The man was killed on the spot and has yet to be identified. Daramy then put up a new video that circulated throughout social media that claimed that the man was a 'martyr' and a soldier of God. Many other reports came through of Daramy's followers arming themselves and attacking local authorities throughout the Souhé region.

Backlash to this attack has been widespread throughout the Souhé region. In the Southern area of the region, many militias have been formed to protect smaller villages from the thread of Jihad. We were able to interview one man, Seedy Jallow, who had this to say.

"I knew that Daramy's intentions were impure from the start. This man is dangerous and he is a threat to the safety of Songa as a nation. He'll kill anyone, whether you're a Muslim or a Christian. What he practices is not Islam, not even close. He is not a real Muslim." Jallow said. "If the police aren't ready to fight, we are. I am ready to protect my village and my family. I am ready to die for them."

The president has not commented on the issue yet, but he will address the public tomorrow. More to come soon from Songa.

This dangerous situation will be updated as we learn more about it.

Eniola Addresses Jihadist Threat in Souhé Region

President Baako Eniola appeared before the public in front of the presidential palace to address rising Jihadist issues in the Souhé region earlier this morning.

"Recently, the Songan government has been alerted to a violent threat in Eastern Songa. The Islamic Development Movement will not be taken lightly."

The president then went on to announce the creation of a small task force in the region that will be specialized in dealing with the terrorists. He named it the Souhé Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit, and he stated that it will consist of policemen and soldiers who are well trained and familiar with the region.

More to come on this topic later.
