People's Armed Forces conduct strategic readiness drills in response to arms race between bourgeois powers

The Pelasgian People's Armed Forces have conducted large-scale strategic readiness and response drills in the Meridian and Basilisk Sea regions, involving naval, aerial, and land-based units. The drills were ordered and directly supervised by Comrade Marshal Ioannis Drakos, the Chairman of the Supreme Military Council and Head of State of the People's Republic. According to the statement by the Supreme Military Council, these manoeuvres were necessitated by growing ICBM and WMD procurement programmes and arms races between bourgeois states in Gallo-Germania. In a speech to cadets at the Central Military Academy of the People's Army, the Minister of Defence, Comrade General Alexios Ioannopoulos, highlighted the "need for Pelasgia to demonstrate its strategic adequacy and readiness to retaliate against any strategic or mass attack by the forces of international reaction." In an interview to Isonomia, the Minister affirmed Pelasgia's commitment to safeguarding the global socialist revolution against any outside threats.

The drills, code-named "Prometheus 2022", involved units from all branches of the People's Armed Forces, and tested the readiness of the "AKRITAS System"--Pelasgia's semi-automated strategic deterrent programme. According to reports by the Supreme Military Council of the People's Republic, all tests were carried out with full success, demonstrating complete operational harmony between aerial, land, naval, and aerospace units, both of a defensive and retaliatory nature. The conclusions of the drills, which have been partly publicised, will be used to further hone the doctrine and operational readiness of Pelasgian forces.

With the 104th National Congress of the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP) coming up in a few weeks, the Chairman of the Council of State, Comrade Marshal Ioannis Drakos, wishes to demonstrate to the nation and the Party his commitment to the security of Pelasgians and to the safeguarding of their gains and conquests against bourgeois exploitation. The Premier of the People's Republic, Comrade Stylianos Ploumidis, has announced additional measures to modernise and expand the strategic deterrent of the People's Republic, including its renowned and fearsome submarine fleet, and to work with partners in Himyar and across the exploited parts of the globe to deter the bourgeois imperialist powers from any aggression.

Niommonach rejoice in the Pelasgian defense drills known as Prometheus 2022! A serious socialist state is finally weighing in on the imperial sandwich surrounding Post-Delegationist foolery! The Socialist People's Republic stands with Pelasgia and invites her to join arms against these lords and liberals who trade in Christian lives and industries!

Grand Ceremony marks the opening of the 104th National Congress of the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia

The Palace of the People, which houses the Popular Assembly, as seen from its large public gardens in downtown Propontis

On Monday, Propontines awoke to the sound of twin twenty-one gun salutes, one from the Pelasgian Meridian Sea Fleet ships assembled near the city's main harbour of Pyrgos, and another from military units stationed on the Hill of Eptapyrgios. Simultaneously, fighter jets overflew the capital, while thousands of citizens marched outside the government quarter in unison, dressed in traditional clothes and various professional uniforms, to show the support of the common people and the unions of all trades and professions for the steadfast leadership of the Pelasgian Nation by its vanguard, the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP). These festivities, which would later be joined by a large fireworks display at the end of the opening ceremony, marked the start of the 104th National Congress of SEKP, an event which has taken place every year since the Party's foundation in 1908.

A series of addresses followed, starting with the Chairman of SEKP, Comrade Marshal Ioannis M. Drakos, who is also Chairman of the Council of State of the People's Republic and Chairman of the Supreme Military Council. Comrade Drakos made an inspired address summarizing the great progress made by the Pelasgian Nation under the Party's leadership, particularly since the enactment of the New Economic Policy, which recently celebrated its thirtieth birthday. Noting the immense progress in the living conditions of the average working Pelasgian, which has allowed street vendors to distribute red meat food (once a luxury good for many) for free on the day of the Congress, Comrade Drakos also outlined the diplomatic, military, scientific, and economic progress of the country, which have all allowed Pelasgia to hold its head high amidst a world dominated by reactionary forces. Comrade Drakos specifically referred to how Pelasgian strategic defence and naval systems are increasingly in demand abroad, while also referencing Propontis' key role in defusing the tensions in Germania via a well-placed E.F. resolution.

At the conclusion of his speech, which was broadcasted live across Pelasgia, Comrade Drakos made a shocking announcement: the National Congress would select his successor. After nearly forty years of paramount leadership, Comrade Drakos would be stepping down from his position, and transfer power over the country to a successor chosen by the Pelasgian People's sole legitimate and elected representatives in the Party.

Finance Minister Th. Papadopoulos applauded after a speech on the New Economic Policy

The landmark address given by the esteemed Chairman overshadowed further developments at the opening ceremony. Nevertheless, other important announcements followed, including reports by Comrade Premier Stylianos Ploumidis and Comrade Finance Minister Theodoros Papadopoulos on the progress of the Party's current long term socio-economic and geopolitical plans, as well as a detailed report by Defence Minister Comrade General Alexios Ioannopoulos on the successful completion of the "Prometheus 2022" series of strategic readiness and response drills. The Chairman of the Popular Assembly, Comrade Aristeidis Ophiotelis, then closed the ceremony with an insightful address on the historical progress and evolution of SEKP and its ideology, noting that the Party currently stands at a unique crossroads; and that the path chosen by the Delegates at the 104th National Congress will likely shape the future of Pelasgia, Himyar, and Europe for decades, if not centuries, to come.

Esteemed Chairman I. Drakos passes away at Propontis Central Military Hospital | National Mourning Period proclaimed | State Council, Politburo meet in emergency session
Propontis, 23 March 2022 | Stephanos Lazarides

The Emergency Care building of Propontis Central Military Hospital, where Chairman Drakos had been transferred since suffering a stroke last week

On Wednesday morning, bells rang out across Propontis in a mournful chime, and cannon shots roared from both sea and land. Every radio in the country relayed the same message: Comrade Marshal Ioannis Markou Drakos, Chairman of the Council of State, General Secretary of the Socialist Workers' Party, and Chairman of the Supreme Military Council of the Pelasgian People's Republic has passed away at the age of eighty-one. The Esteemed Chairman had been provisionally hospitalised at the emergency care unit of Propontis Central Military Hospital, following an unexpected stroke on March 15, right after the end of the visit of Josefinian President José Constanza. Though Comrade Drakos had largely stabilised by March 18, he remained comatose. Thus, physicians had seen fit to continue to monitor the Marshal closely, especially since his presence at the closing of the 104th SEKP National Congress would be crucial to state continuity. Then, suddenly, on the morning of March 22, Comrade Marshal Drakos suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away without explanation. Try as they did, the doctors failed to revive the National Leader--whose tranquil expression reflected upon a peaceful passing of a humble and pious man who had devoted decades of his life to serving the Pelasgian People.

As required by law, the People's Government proclaimed a period of official mourning, requiring that portraits of the Great Leader with a black label of mourning be displayed at public buildings throughout the country. Flags are to also be flown at half a mast with a black pennant of mourning, and a black armband is to be worn by all SEKP members and public officials of the People's Republic in Pelasgia and abroad. Per tradition, the period is to last for forty days and to be observed throughout Pelasgia, including in the islands of the Archipelago and in the exclave of Tephanon. Yet, even before the announcement had been made, millions of Pelasgians from all walks of life took to the streets throughout the country in spontaneous demonstrations of grief and solidarity. Hymns were sang, both for Comrade Drakos in particular and for the great task of Patriotic Self-Strengthening and global popular liberation and in general, while processions were organised throughout Pelasgia. Already, countless Pelasgians are planning to go to Propontis, where the late Marshal lies in state, to pay their respects in anticipation of the coming state funeral. The Foreign Ministry has invited representatives from all nations, especially those of the Socialist International.

Comrade Andreas N. Vasileiadis,
Procurator General, Vice-Premier, &
Acting Chairman of the State Council

At the same time, the organs of the Workers' State have met to deliberate on matters of state continuity and succession. The State Council, Pelasgia's collective Head of State, is to be headed by the second most senior member in its ranks until the vacancy of the Chairman is filled. Thus, for now, Comrade Andreas Vasileiadis, the Procurator General and Deputy Premier of Pelasgia, who is also the Second Secretary of SEKP, will act as the Provisional Chairman of the Council of State. Likewise, the Politburo has voted to appoint Comrade Vasileiadis as its provisional head, while convening an emergency plenary session of the Socialist Workers' Party National Congress concurrently with an emergency session of the People's Assembly of Pelasgia to elect a new National Leader. Given that the process of selecting Comrade Drakos' successor was already underway--for the late Chairman, in his infinite foresight, had seen fit to make preparations for the relaying of power to a new generation of leaders--the disruption of the transition of power is expected to be minimal. Nevertheless, no one can deny that Pelasgia and all of Europe have lost a great leader, a Father of the Socialist Fatherland, and a champion of working people everywhere.

Defence Minister Ioannopoulos named Chairman after suppression of attempted Revolutionary Guard coup | Revolutionary Guard abolished, Multi-Party Elections to be held
Propontis, 27 March 2022 | Panagiotis Kritikopoulos

The Politburo Building, which lies at the heart of the old Crown Prince's Palace complex. The illustrious Propontine architecture buildings still serve as the seat of the Central People's Government.

Following an emergency session this morning, the National Congress of the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP) voted to appoint Defence Minister Comrade General Alexios Ioannopoulos as Chairman of the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia. This confirmed an earlier decision to appoint Comrade General Ioannopoulos as Acting Chairman by the Politburo of SEKP in the early morning hours of the day, in response to a short-lived coup attempt by Revolutionary Guard troops guarding the Politburo Building within the Central People's Government Complex in central Propontis. During the coup, both the Acting Chairman (Vice Premier Andreas Vasileiadis) and the Chairman of the People's Assembly (Aristeidis Ophiotelis) were killed by the rogue Guardsmen, while the remaining members of the Politburo were taken hostage. Thankfully, the timely intervention of special forces of the People's Secret Service (or Krypteia) helped to suppress the coup and free the leadership of the People's State. Immediately thereafter, military forces of the Central Command garrisoned at Selymbria, just outside Propontis, moved in to replace Revolutionary Guard forces in the capital, while the Guard itself has been disbanded, its duties being provisionally taken over by the People's Military Police.

General Staff building after an inspection of nationwide forces

In a heartfelt address to the nation today at noon, Chairman Ioannopoulos reassured the people and foreign nations that the People's Government was secure, and that those behind the attempted coup had been brought to justice. The Chairman revealed that the putschist elements within the Revolutionary Guard, with the support of a handful of radical SEKP politicians, had been behind the wave of so-called "White Guard" attacks across Pelasgia, with the hope of destabilizing the People's Government and seizing power for themselves. With that, the Chairman made a historic announcement: due to the instability caused by the single-party system, due to its preclusion of civil political dissent and factionalism, the Socialist Workers' Party's monopoly on state power and on the fielding of electoral candidates would be lifted. As of this week, elections will be held, for the first time in Pelasgia's history, with the free participation of multiple parties. Since this would require a constitutional amendment, the Chairman has promised to present a draft constitution enshrining these principles--a proposal which he hopes to submit to the people at large in a referendum.

"The purpose of our Revolution was to make the People of Pelasgia masters of their own home," Honourable Comrade Chairman Ioannopoulos said in his address. "For decades, we have laboured restlessly toward this goal. However, at last, we must acknowledge that one does not make the People masters of their own destiny by placing them under guardianship. For the first time in sixty years, it is time we acknowledge that our work has paid off: the Pelasgian People are finally ready and able to be masters of their own destiny. It is incumbent upon us, Comrades, to live up to the aspirations of our People's Republic and to put the People in charge. Glory to dearly departed Chairman Drakos! Glory to the Pelasgian People's Republic! And glory to the rule of the people--to democracy--the very foundation of modern Pelasgian nationhood!"

The Premier, Comrade Stylianos Ploumidis, who is set to continue in his duties according to Chairman Drakos' wishes, has published a draft plan for the registration of political parties and the transfer of SEKP members to other parties, if they so wish. More details will be forthcoming in the following days.

Constitutional amendments approved| First multi-party elections produce SEKP majority, with strong showing from new parties | General Ioannopoulos elected President by legislature

A behind-the-scenes photo of preparations for the official inauguration ceremony of SEKP Chairman General Alexios Ioannopoulos as the first President of the Pelasgian People's Republic. The ceremony will take place in the main hall of the National People's Assembly Palace.

Following a large majority of support (78% of valid ballots for and 22% against) and a turnout of 83% in this week's consultative referendum regarding amendments to the Constitution of the Pelasgian People's Republic, the National People's Assembly has voted to amend the Constitution as proposed. Following these amendments, a series of important changes to the political framework of the People's Republic have been made; for one, Pelasgia is no longer a directorial republic, but a presidential one. The President is to be named by the National People's Assembly for an unlimited number of consecutive five-year terms. The President, who is Pelasgia's head of state and the head of the country's executive and military, then appoints the Premier and the rest of the Council of Ministers, subject to the approval of the National People's Assembly. The newly elected members of the reformed National People's Assembly chose to appoint the incumbent SEKP General Secretary, Comrade General Alexios Ioannopoulos, as President. In turn, and with the Assembly's approval, President Ioannopoulos appointed long-time incumbent Premier Stylianos Ploumidis to his position anew. Premier Ploumidis thanked the President and vowed to continue his highly successful reforms to accelerate the growth of the People's Republic.

A second important constitutional change is the abolition of the one-party system, in favour of a multi-party system under the paramount leadership of the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP). Under the new approach, SEKP remains Pelasgia's dominant and sole official governing party, from which the President and Premier must be drawn; however, other parties may field candidates in elections and voice their policy proposals, subject, of course, to the paramount leadership of SEKP over the People's Republic.

You must be registered for see images
The seat distribution in the National People's Assembly

A practical example of this policy in action came with Friday's election, which accompanied the referendum: despite a strong majority of around 349 (or 60%) of seats going to SEKP, other parties made a strong showing, with various non-governing parties to the left and right of SEKP's centre gaining 231 (or 40%) of the 580 seats of the National People's Congress. These included: the Democratic Workers’ Party (DEK, 46 seats); the Labour Coalition for Progress and Reform (EPMES, 70 seats); the All-Pelasgian Democratic League (PADIS, 17 seats); the National Solidarity Front (MEA, 52 seats); and the National Revolutionary Party (EPAK, 46 seats). These parties represent a wide variety of ideological and interest groups, ranging from minority rights and regional advocacy to left-wing nationalism and pro-market reform positions. Combined with SEKP, they form the National Unity Front (MEE), a cross-partisan political coalition of all parties under SEKP's paramount leadership. As such, the various parties of the Pelasgian legislature are able to promote various policy proposals and perspectives to the governing party, without compromising national unity and reducing the nation's politics to petty factionalism and politicking.

Further amendments to the Constitution include protections for individual rights and freedoms; provisions for the preservation of traditional minority and regional cultures; recognition and protection of private property, alongside restraints on governmental powers of eminent domain; and updating the official statement of ideology in the Constitution to match evolutions in state dogma since the last major amendment of the document under Comrade Chairman M. Sideris in 1969. More significant secondary amendments also include anti-corruption and anti-nepotism measures (and the setting up of the offices of the Superintendent General of the State and Inspector General of the State to enforce them), as well as the recognition of the Pelasgian Orthodox Faith as Pelasgia's "preeminent national religion". This last statement does not alter Pelasgia's character as a secular state, as clarified in the document itself. Instead, it merely serves to recognise certain privileges of the Pelasgian Orthodox Church and its faithful, allowing for such institutions as official observance traditional religious holidays and the commissioning of chaplains for the military.

Propontis issues stern warning against Carian militarisation of Meridian Sea bottleneck
Propontis, 11 April 2022 | Christodoulos Leontopoulos

You must be registered for see images

A Pelasgian corvette (right) and a Carian gunboat (left) face off in disputed waters between the Carian-occupied island of Hagios Georgios and the Pelasgian islet of Eleousa in the Meridian Sea

Following the public announcement of Caria's purchase of advanced anti-air weapons from the Holy Frankish Empire, Propontis has warned Nauplia against deploying such systems to the dispute island of Hagios Georgios, which is under Carian occupation. Located across from the Pelasgian islet of Eleousa, just off the coast of the Pelasgian city of Thermi, the island of Hagios Georgios is administered by Caria as a polity (state) of that federal kingdom, but it is claimed by both Pelasgia and Caria, due to conflicting interpretations of a 1912 treaty between the two states. Pelasgia claims that the island falls within the old Imperial Theme of the Archipelago, and therefore form part of its present-day Archipelago Province; Caria instead claims that it never ceded Hagios Georgios to Pelasgia, and that the treaty only deals with nearby Eleousa, whose status was also previously in dispute between the two countries. Though the dispute was largely ignored for many years under the complacent imperial regime, since the Revolution, Pelasgia has grown concerned over the islands' potential use as a staging area for an invasion by reactionary forces against the People's State. Moreover, the potential for the discovery of oil and gas deposits near the islands has piqued interests on both sides.

With renewed vigour, the People's State has sought to assert the ancient rights of the Pelasgian Nation, while also taking steps to ensure the safety of Thermi, Pelasgia's second largest city, from foreign offensives. According to the Ministry of Defence, the deployment of long-range SAM systems on Hagios Georgios could compromise the aerial safety of Thermi by punching a hole in Pelasgian air defences and strategic depth planning. Thus, Propontis has rebuked attempts by jingoists in Nauplia to deploy their newly purchased systems on the disputed island and so close to Pelasgian territory. Yet, as the reactionary Constitutional Democratic Party of Caria seeks to shore itself up against growing public outrage against its failed economic policies and domestic political blunders, the Kingdom might yet choose to ignore these warnings. Caria's direct alignment with the reactionary monarchies, as evidenced by its recent trade agreement with Chagny, is certainly not proof of its wish for détente; nor is the growing vehemence with which the Carian opposition, the National Democratic Party, is calling for a harder stance against Pelasgia.

In recent months, confrontations between Pelasgian and Carian fishermen in the vicinity of Hagios Georgios have involved both countries' coast guard forces at an increasing rate. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that the Pelasgian People's Navy and the Royal Carian Navy have both made long-term deployments of naval squadrons in the region. Many across Europe fear that this growing militarisation of the Meridian Sea's bottleneck could seriously impact world trade, as a significant part of global trade, including oil and natural gas shipments, flows through the area on the way to and from the Propontine Straits. On Monday, Pelasgian Foreign Minister Anaxandros Koligos called on the international community to "rein in" Carian militarism, failing which, Pelasgia "might be forced to take military-technical measures to ensure its own safety, as well as that of world shipping." Nauplia dismissed Pelasgia's concerns and refused to say whether it would deploy the long-range anti-air systems to Hagios Georgios after all; as the crisis continues to escalate, it appears that, sooner or later, Caria will have to stop evading the question and take a clear stance.
