Office of the People's Commissariat for External Affairs
People's Federal Socialist Republics of

We wish to reassure our counterparts in Ostrovakia of the peaceful nature of the naval exercises currently taking place in the Kalahari Sea. Besides being a natural part of maintaining our armed forces it is also another sample of the military coordination between the member states of the Rurikgrad Pact. Kadikistan's commitment to the Status Quo in the region remains solid and these exercises will help us in our quest to guarantee the safety of the vital Kalahari trade routes. The latter benefiting all Kalahari nations, including Ostrovakia. We are committed to follow all conventional military protocols for the duration of the war games and will steer clear of Ostrovakian sovereign territory.

Signed,
Petar Kujundzic
People's Commissar for External Affairs
People's Federal Socialist Republics of

OST. DECLARES NEUTRALITY

The Ostrovak League Senate voted late this evening after a prolonged session of debate to maintain neutrality concerning the rapidly escalating Crotobaltislavonia Crisis. Some officials, particularly from the conservative NoVyhor Brotherhood shocked the floor in the morning when they presented a fully formed war plan to assert the League Navy directly into fray off the coast of Kadikistan. A majority opted for neutrality when it came to vote however, with intelligence experts from the Navy itself asking the more bellicose Senators to allow them to "assess who and what we are dealing with in the CBS".

THE DISCRIMINATION DANCE

Young attendants of the Annual Winter Ball in Ostrograd seem to have shared one distinct feature: they were all Ostrovak born and bred. Second and even third generation immigrants were controversially turned away last Sunday from this official government function that provides young military cadets and budding female students an opportunity to mingle in Ostrograd's Grand League Ballroom. 17 year old Pyotor Muhammad, a second generation Urodoah who is studying to be a Combat Engineer Officer, says his invitation to the Winter Ball was torn to pieces in front of him before being escorted away by allegedly laughing League Marines. The Progressive Ostrovaks Party has called the event an "act of war against diversity that will not go unanswered".

A WEEK OF REFLECTION

With most League Citizens in both the public and private sectors taking the week off on holiday in anticipation of the new year, many are reflecting on the events of a tumultuous 2017. Beginning with the heart wrenching terrorist attack on the Museum for Historical Progress that left children and adults dead or injured, and continuing with the downfall of the nation's decades serving General Secretary, Ostrovaks will be asked to democratically chart their future early next year that includes both the fallen leader's natural successor and his historical rival that holds his seat until the election confirms or denies his vision of a conservative reconquista of Ostrograd.

THE SHATTERED STATE OF DEMOCRACY

GRYZLOV 46%, PAVLOVA 38%, BORICHEVSKY/OTHERS 16%

After an election day conflagration, the apparent loser of this electoral joust is refusing to concede. Ariadna Pavlova, the Progressive Peoples Party candidate, cites a series of poll stations that inexplicably shut down early or before the end of the work day, while others were being shut down by League Marines after violent clashes with protestors from both sides. In this scenario where the second place candidate demands a recount, League Election Authority procedure requires the third place candidate if available to co-sign or deny the petition for recount. Borichevsky, a de-facto political ally of Gryzlov, has chosen to deny Pavlova's petition for recount and now she has locked down her election headquarters with the help of Ostrograd Metropolitan Police.

"Concerned citizens across The League have made their choice in a solid majority," Novy Vyhor Party candidate and initial winner Viktor Gryzlov told followers an acceptance speech this evening, "Interim S-G Mikhail Borichevsky, a fellow candidate who was on the ballot today, called me only a few moments ago to congratulate me and offered several ways we might work together! Now where is little Miss Pavlova, is she merely appealing for a recount, or perhaps is she soliciting foreign intervention? I will not allow this failing candidate from a failure of a movement to turn Ostrovakia into the next Crotobaltislavonia!"

Meanwhile this evening Lord Admiral Pyotor Orlov, the supreme military leader and in effect the highest ranking non-interim official involved in this affair, has reportedly raised the military to a heightened state of readiness to prevent foreign intervention an further partisan clashes between left-right protesters that marred the election day. League Marines have now formed security cordons on both candidate headquarters, a welcome recognition of authority in Gryzlov's case, but a potential standoff in the case of Pavlova who is being protected by Metropolitan Police who surrendered to League Marines and Orlov in a similar standoff late last year

Unnamed campaign advisors from within the Viktor Gryzlov campaign say that the S-G Elect will give Pavlova until tomorrow morning to concede and recognize the results of the election. Ostrovakia Today intends to follow the story throughout the night with social media updates.

GRYZLOV'S GAMBIT:
OBSCURE SENATOR BECOMES LEAGUE SECRETARY
On the 19th of February, 2018 a political miracle occurred in Ostrovakia, the impossible elevation of Viktor Gryzlov from Senatorial obscurity to cresting the League Secretary title riding a popular landslide manifesting on the morning of! So many Ostrovaks country will forever remember waking that Sunday under a blanket of mist and fog, uncertain what political animals loomed and capered in the morning haze. Surely this four term Senator from the far-flung Oblast of Anastov was another straw man candidate propped up by the 'New Vyhor Party', perennial losers to fifty years dominated by now controversially imprisoned Ilari Glazkov's 'Progressive Party' and his honorable rivals the 'Conservative Ostrovaks'.

Viktor Gryzlov (born April 2, 1958) entered the public sphere in 1980 as a nationally successful wrestler and internationally competitive decathlete. He was a poster-boy for the Progressive State, and seemed to relish in the role for many years until returning to his religious roots in 1988 after a debilitating spine injury suffered after falling from a horse. Several stints of subsequent wrestling coaching and administrative positions soon transitioned to winning and holding the Senator from Anastov Office from 1995 until present. Gryzlov represented the low-voter constituency of Anastov for over a decade as a Conservative Ostrovak, following party voting instruction on nearly every roll-call with the exceptions of upholding abortion and limiting religious tax exceptions.

Migrating to the budding 'New Vyhor Party' in 2007, Gryzlov flexed his League popularity to assume prominence in the obscure organization, achieving re-election again in '08 with a new party. In Novy Vyhor Gryzlov found both a radical and energetic base, capable of fielding bodies to protests and demonstrations ruled and unchallenged by the Progressives for decades. No greater show of force was made by Gryzlov however until election day, where he rode the wings of two right wings: deep religious conservatives, and the marched maritime military.

But if political elections are a horse race, then Gryzlov prophetically enlisted the hardiest people of Ostrovakia on the right day in the worst weather. Anastov, Gryzlov's home, is host to the largest population of Anabaptist Christians, or Old Believers, radical to both the Vyhoric Orthodox and atheist Progressive mainstream. These Old Believers rode in horses to main street, blocking in parking areas with any available livestock from sheep to human children, blocking urban and suburban voters from even approaching polling centers. Lord Admiral Pyotor Orlov delivered the military deathblow, an alleged member of the New Vyhor movement himself, all but ordered the entire League to vote for Gryzlov on Saturday evening - admitting that he would vote for him because no other candidate could "grapple with Xinhai, Chernovy, Kadikistan, and Post-Delegationism as well as Viktor Gryzlov".
