“This is inconceivable,” barked the Chancellor.

“Quiet,” replied the High King.

“To Solis, you’re bringing them to Solis?” the Chancellor continued.

“Not bringing, more like brought. They are here of course,” the High King answered.

“You’ve made so many enemies since approaching this throne, there’s no sense to create even more!” the Chancellor yelled.

“I couldn’t agree more, that’s why they’re here,” the High King remained resolute.

“Have you not memory of our history?” the Chancellor asked.

“I’m sure whatever I lack in history I make up for in perception of the present day. Tell me, Señor Arturo, which is more valuable?” the High King answered.

Democracy, a word coined and created by the Ionians, has spread across the globe. It infected nation after nation, toppling power amongst the rightful for hundreds of years. Today, only a few nations saw their aristocracies remaining in power and few were as absolute as Auraria. Out of necessity, two old enemies were reunited at the table.

The High King signaled for the Chancellor to remain behind as he continued. He was wearing a royal cloak, red with gold trim. This tradition was namely only something that House Calderón did, but it was catching popularity with the arrival of the Calderón Dynasty.

The High King entered a room, opened a door to find a balcony that overlooked the Bay of Solis. He sat down on the ornate furniture. The sky was a rich, cloudless blue and the water especially clear. The sound of the ocean in the background and the warmth of Auraria’s southern summers provided a near mesmerizing scenery. Then, the doors to the balcony were opened and in walked the Arretine Emperor. For the first time in history, the Aurarine High King and Arretine Emperor were within one hundred feet of each other.

The High King rose

“Your Majesty, allow me to welcome you to Solis, the Jewel of the Aurarine Kingdom, would you like a drink?” he asked.

Martinus strode through the door, acting with confidence, but not arrogance. Compared to the chancellor and the High King he was dressed much more simply. He had never taken to adopted cloaks and gold and royal regalia, it had provided to be a distraction for previous rulers. Instead he wore a formal suit, of course he had taken on his jacket earlier when arriving, it was quite warm here after all, and came in with his vest on instead.

"Oh a drink? Yes of course thank you." he smiled and looked out towards to open door of the balcony. He walked out onto the balcony and took in the view. "Stunning, it reminds me of Arretium itself."

He turned around and the High King approached him from behind extending a glass. He took the glass in his hand and leaned against the rail of the balcony, taking a sip.

"Scotch," He said, "Good choice. I believe we have much to discuss, and much of our old history to move past. I want us to be great friends, please, Martinus will do, no need for formalities"

“It has been a while since I’ve been permitted to speak to royalty as a person. I recently returned from Tiburtina to witness the marriage of my daughter to Prince Giuseppe, so many royals, so many tiresome formalities,” the High King replied “you may call me Beto.”

The two stood taking in the sights and then Roberto let out a slight chuckle.

“You know, a century and a half ago, I’d be hung for even proposing that Aurarine and Arretine nationals meet each other without guns and cannons firing at each other. My how far we’ve come, Martinus. However, this world is not the same place it used to be in those days. Today the world is changing,” he said.

The High King left the ledge and walked back to the chairs that were set up for them. He sat down and so did the Emperor.

“As the world changes, we must change as well – lest we and our kind be left behind and democrats destroy us. For that reason above all others, it is time for our nations to end this coexistence we’ve shared and begin working together. It starts with a trade deal, but by no means ends there, only opens doors. For our continued survival in this world, we must act together and cooperate on a level that we never have before.”

Martinus smiled and sipped on his drink, "I agree. A healthy amount of democracy is of course alright, on the town and city level we have elections to appease the people. But if recent history has shown us anything, it is that we are coming close to an edge, which could end in revolution if we don't play our cards carefully. Our wars were over a hundred years ago, and to be honest, they must be forgotten. As you can see neither of our empires has made much progress before we rose to our thrones. Most of our enemies now reside close to us, and they have kept us down for some time."

He took another sip, "You should have seen read the foreign media when they read that 'firey' speech I gave not that long ago. So many of them are watching me, some with fear some with interest. But they know that the successful unification of Arretium means some nation's end in the near future. But I never knew the vast resources my own country had! I have increased the size of the Imperial army by almost a million men. Tanks and warplanes and warships, all on their way to supplementing them. But I have no desire to use this army willy nilly. We both know they we must work together to create an environment in the Long Sea that is... favorable for both our nations."

"But just imagine!" He said with excitement, standing up again looking back out the window. "Imagine Tibur in the hands of Arretium again..."

He looked back at the High King, "I'm sorry my friend, my excitement gets the better of me sometimes. It may be a dream that can never be. But I believe I know the perfect test for our resolve. Recently a pact has been signed between my neighbor, Ionia, Eiffelland and Nictenstein. Their pact threatens our dominance in the Long Sea. I believe it will be to our benefit to see it end. Individually each of them could not defeat us in battle, but as a whole, well at this stage let's just say I don't want to press my luck."
