RIJEKA BID FOR THE 2012 SUMMER OLYMPICS

City information

The Carentanian capital is the country's second largest city and political and geographic center. With nearly eight million inhabitants it is a bustling metropolis of regional and international importance located on both sides of the Dunay river. Ever since being proclaimed the Carentanian capital in the early 1600s, Rijeka has experienced steady growth and the different eras are well preserved in the city's architecture, making it a sight to behold and Carentanias most famous tourist destination, both for domestic and international travellers. Especially prominent is the historic city center and its famous central square, the Čierna Námestie, paved with black marble. Or the Dunay promenades with its several kilometer long park area at the southern shore of the mighty river. Rijeka is also home to the popular Maximo district, hub of a modern urban youth culture that has influenced developements throughout Europe.

Like all Carentanian cities, Rijeka is a model example of succesful socialist principles: safe, prosperous, welcoming and clean. Public services are in top condition, property crime is unknown in our egalitarian society, streets and public spaces are kept in a thoroughly clean condition and safe from vandalism. The Workers' Republic is in general open to all visitors and would receive olympic visitors with generosity and friendliness.

Venues

Rijeka hosts a number of stadiums in central location and with excellent access to public transit that would be suitable locations for olympic games. Stadiums of the Carentanian Hitball League as well as the National Athletes Association could serve as venues for number of team-based sports as well as individual competitions. They would serve as addition to a planned Olympic district to be built at the western end of the city, featuring a prominent central Olympic Square as place for public cultural events, as well as hosting the Olympic torch on a central monolith. Several large stadiums are planned in this Olympic district to accomodate the needs of an event of such considerable size. Carentanian engineers are known to be visionary and ambitious, yet with a solid and realistic perception of their profession. As such, we place utmost confidence in our ability to construct a set of central venues thoroughly befitting this event while reflecting the spirit of international friendship.

Transportation and Accommodations

Home to an international airport and connected through high-speed railways with all major cities in Carentania, Rijeka is easily reached by any visitor. Both the airport as well as the central station are well integrated into an endurable public transit system that meets highest standards in terms of efficiency, speed, security and flexibility. Being the daily choice of millions of hardworking Rijekans, the subway, suburban rail and tram lines will serve the olympic visitors just as well. Rijekas public transit system possesses the ability to easily place more trains on the line during the period of the games, avoiding capacity shortages as a result of the Olympic competitions. The construction of an additional trainstation "Olympic Square" is planned, connecting the new district with the general transit system.

In order to house the athletes, a portion of the Olympic District will feature modern apartement buildings adhering to the highest standards of Carentanian engineering. Generously outfitted, they will make the time between competitions and training as relaxing as possible while the athletes lounge in their air-conditioned, energy-efficient and beautifully designed homes. Various services will be provided by Carentanian workers in shops and venues in foot-walking distance of the apartements. Meanwhile tourists can choose between trying to find a room in one of the many hotels in the city center or reside in direct neighbourhood of the athletes in either the Great Olympic Hotel or the European Inn, both to be built along with the district.

Security

As a generally safe country - a result of an egalitarian economic system and a focus on social justice - Carentania faces few security risks to the Olympic visitors to begin with and retains more ressources to deal with those which remain. Having been plagued by recurring waves of Mezhist terrorism since the 1920s, the Workers' Republic learned the hard way how to efficiently deal with politically motivated violence and the Commissariate for Inner Security can now boldly proclaim that Rijeka will be safe from any such assaults, even during a mass-event like the Olympic Games. Carentanias unique system of law enforcement based around the local communities, civil courage and volunteer activity is supplemented by specialized units embedded within the Commissariate for Inner Security that can deal with unusual and highly dangerous threats before they can prove problematic. This provides both the utmost security as well as a welcoming climate unstained by the visible presence of state violence.

In addition to our established security network, the Olympic venues themselves, as well as the athletes accomodations, will be guarded by handpicked and specially trained Olympic Security Workers, who will double as helpful guides and welcoming friendly face for the many guests Carentania hopes to receive during this event. The Workers' Republic has achieved commendable results with a comparable system during its half-yearly All-Workers Congress where thousands of delegates from all over the country travel to Rijeka to vote on decisions for the entire country. Just as we manage to protect the central event of Carentanian democracy, we are confident to be able to protect the Olympic Games from any unfortunate incident.

This extends to the medical field as well. The Carentanian medical system is endurable and well-maintained, providing services on par with modern standards to any Carentanian citizen as well as visitors to the country. Carentanian hospitals and emergency services will be backed up by volunteers from other Carentanian citizens during the period of the events, with the Workers' Watch, Carentanias oldest and largest aid organization, watching over the events themselves. An elaborate desaster plan will allow speedy and efficient intervention in case of a large-scale accident.

Jurzidentia

Sharjah is the second largest city in Jurzan and is also the nation’s capital. Over the last two years, the city has seen the majority of the reconstruction fund money turning it into one of the most modern and luxurious cities in all of Himyar. About three million people call Sharjah home. Sharjah is the cultural and political capital of the nation as well. Religious temples and political monuments dot the city.

Map location of Sharjah:

Transportation/Accommodations

The newly constructed subway system and bus system makes transportation significantly easier than the usually busy and cluttered roads. Athletes will be staying at a five star hotel known as Serenity which is 800 ft or 266 meters high. On the top floor, there is a pool built on a balcony, the pool has reinforced glass walls and bottom, allowing swimmers to see all the around the city while swimming, supposed to simulate flying. Athletes will receive a Government Credit Card, meaning that all of their expenses will be paid by the Jurzani Government.

For the influx of visitors, additional police officers will be called in to help direct traffic as well as additional busses. For ₪154.9 ($36) people may purchase an “Olympics Pass” which allows them to board new Olympic Cars which will be sectioned off on subway trains. The cards will be good for the duration of the Olympic Games, they also pay for 25 subway trips.

Sharjah General, the nation’s largest hospital, is setting aside rooms to give immediate attention to any injured athletes. All Olympic Facilities will have an area closed off that is large enough for medevac to land, guaranteeing that traffic will not affect the life of the athletes. There will also be medical tents at the venues capable of treating minor injuries.

Security

Serenity Hotel has its own security force, but that’ll be supplemented by the Sharjah Police Department. Because of the number of people expected to attend the games, Sharjah Police will be at the Olympic facilities 24/7 and will all be armed. All entrances and exits will be guarded and all visitors are required to go through a metal detector before entering the Olympic Facility. Should anything happen, Olympic facilities will be put on lockdown until it is determined safe once again.

Sharjah is the nation’s capital, so it is the safest city in the country. It also possesses one of the lowest crime rates.

Venues

Sharjah does, however, have a lack of sports facilities. This actually works to our benefit because the Northern Development Committee and Board of Infrastructure will be able to build facilities specifically designed to handle the games. They can all be built in one are and in such a way that they are the safest and most efficient facilities that a nation could offer. Jurzan does possess the financial resources to build the facilities quickly and with high quality.
