Young voters may be key in Commons Elections

Prescott Square, Portsmouth - General elections for the House of Commons opened today across the nation. A dramatic increase in voter participation has been reported when compared to the 2010 elections which was marred by voter apathy, on top of a field of generally unexciting candidates and a lack of controversial issues facing them.

This year's election has shown that when prompted, Anglians will come to speak their mind. Rising unemployment rates, a lack of wage growth, and a stagnant economy, have brought voters to the poles. A lackluster economy is considered to be the result of shortsighted economic policy and a downward trend in the ship building industry. Seemingly more important this time around has been social issues, particularly focused on the gap between the rich and the poor, prompting a much younger electorate to come out and vote.

The election has become a three party race, with the old guard Defence Party and Labour Party facing surging opposition from the fledgling New Era United Party (NEU), that has garnered support from a younger demographic as well as left-leaning voters who have been unable to organize effectively until now. The majority Defence Party faces large losses in many urban areas outside of Portsmouth, as many voters consider them to be too out of touch with regular society and full of career politicians.

Unofficial results are coming in from across the nation. Early reports from the polls show major gains for the NEU, which is particularly unsettling for the more conservative Defence Party. A seemingly unphased Prime-Minister Galveston was quoted as he exited his offices this afternoon saying, "I am glad that the young people have come out to vote, and I am confident the results will reflect their will to preserve Anglian traditions and culture, and focus on a strong military, which is the backbone of any strong society." The House of Commons elections may have a deep impact on the later Prime-Minister elections in August.

For now, we can only wait and see as millions turn out to cast their votes in a heated, and pivotal election contest.

Upheaval in the Commons!

Prescott Square, Portsmouth - Early reports from yesterday's House of Commons election had a grim outlook for the majority Defence Party. Yet, even early predictions of the outcomes are now considered conservative. With a final tally coming in, the Defence Party may have to go on the defensive come August when Prime-Minister elections begin and the House starts it's autumn sessions.

In an unprecedented upheaval, the New Era United Party (NEU) has come out of the election with over 43% of the vote. The Defence Party still maintains a majority in the the lower House of Commons, as well as the upper Chamber of Lords, but this new challenge from the fledgling NEU comes as a major surprise to many. Yesterday's predictions gave the NEU 15% of the vote, with the most optimistic giving it 26%. The Defence Party has had a majority in the House of Commons for decades, starting in 1983 when the late King Peter IV ordered the dismantling of any opposing parties. This election illustrates a major change in demographics for the nation, with many already making speculations as to what has caused the shift.

The most predominant speculation centers around the belief that the youth of Anglia have all but ignored the call to defence that their forefathers more than willingly met. [A note to foreign readers, all youth of Anglia who have reached the age of 18 are required to enter a form of civil service in order to gain full citizenship and the right to vote. There are several choices to choose from, including the armed services, interior services, and resource conservation to name a few.] The last decade has shown a major move away from the military path that has startled many in the old majority.

Since 2001, more and more of the Anglian youth have joined civil services other than the armed services, which has spurred outcry from the Defence Party, and the nobility alike. This new trend has continued to grow, and has finally become more than a nuisance to the old military establishment. In addition to the NEU's recent rise, the Labour Party has maintained 9% of the vote, creating a 48% majority for the Defence Party in Parliament. But that majority may soon become nonexistent if the Labour Party and the NEU can join forces, therefore becoming the de facto majority.

Prime-Minister Galveston has yet to make a statement about the election results, and His Majesty King William I has remained silent. It is presumed they will not ignore this growing trend for long. If the Defence Party is going to maintain any kind of majority in government, they must act quickly to attract young voters, or they may very well become the history they so ardently cherish.

NEU Members branded "Fire Stokers"

Prescott Square, Portsmouth - In a scathing press release, the Defence Party branded the recent rise of the New Era United Party as "stoking the fire of subversion and revolution," which was quickly hailed as the new nickname of NEU supporters.

The press release, issued early this morning from the Defence Party headquarters in Portsmouth, gave the appearance of ruffled feathers in the old party. Senior members of the Chamber of Lords - which maintains a universal Defence Party majority - have already called for the King to "toss the election results in the rubbish, as they are an infringement upon the very principles of defence and unity that has brought Anglians together for centuries." The King has yet to make a statement, but with pressure coming from all levels of the nobility, a historically conservative monarchy may move to invalidate the election before tensions evolve into violence.

Next week begins preliminary conventions for each party to elect their candidates for the House of Commons. [A note to international readers, in the Anglian system of Parliamentarian elections, a popular vote based on Party is given nationally, once the results come in, a percentage of the vote is released. If a party was to win 28% of the vote, they must come together in a convention and elect 84 representatives of their party for the lower house of Commons. Their are 300 members of the Commons, so a percentage is multiplied times 3 and that is the allotment for the party to represent them.] Many worry that radical members of the NEU may emerge as leaders, furthering the tension between parties.

The label "Fire stokers" has become a rallying point for members of the NEU, who are often characterized as young and reckless. Demonstrations in urban centers across the nation are growing as many fear the election results may become invalidated. It is unclear yet what the King's reaction will be, if any, but many presume his decision will dramatically alter Anglian history and politics forever.

Prime-Minister Galveston announces economic revitalization policies

Royal Financial District, Portsmouth - Prime-Minister Galveston proudly announced from the steps of the Exchange Building in the Royal Financial District, that several initiatives to fuel economic growth will be brought to the floor of Parliament this week before sessions close for a two week break. Galveston candidly stated that, "We are not hiding from the fact that our industries have been under performing, and our economy has been unable to adapt to recent changes in the global market."

The top industries in Anglia include ship-building, pharmaceuticals, green energy, and financial services. With the ship-building industry hitting hard times, investors have looked towards other markets to invest in. The Prime-Minister noted that the government holds majority stakes in many of Anglia's top corporations. He stated, "If our economy is to move forward, we must allow our companies to become competitive. Government meddling in corporations does nothing but cause inefficiency." Galveston outlined a plan to liquidate the holdings of the government in three major companies as a start of a larger objective to sell of holdings of 25 other major corporations. The three corporations listed include Astrokon Pharmaceuticals, Crowne & Co. Financial Services, and GreenData Engineering. Currently, the government owns over 65% of each company. Galveston pledged that his administration would sell off a minimum of 40% of government holdings, to "open the gate for domestic and foreign investment."

The economic initiative does not stop there. The Prime-Minister further noted that Parliament would lower tariffs on imports, to encourage trading with other nations. While current tariffs are not at all time highs, they have caused many nations to take their business elsewhere. Galveston wanted to bring back the trade lost with other nations by "making our tariffs competitive with other global powers." The Prime-Minister was quick to note that prime real estate has opened across the nation, and taxes "will be moved to an all time low in over a century." At the end of his speech, the Prime-Minister added "The world is listening, and Anglia is open for business!"

Many suspect the speech was a political move in light of recent victories by the New Era United Party in this weeks House of Common's elections. The Prime-Minister's administration and the Defence Party has been accused of "weakening the Anglian economy to such a fragile state that foreign companies laugh at the thought of building here" (NEU Press Release, 6/1/2012). Regardless of political stance, the Prime-Minister's initiative will bring a much needed boost to the Anglian economy.

To Lord Henry Elmsworth IX of Ghent, President and CEO of GreenData Engineering,

We have reviewed your offer to provide the People of the Republic of Zalonarus with infrastructure for clean energy. This proposition is a very timely one, and is very much in line with a recent drive by Neptune Power, the premier energy service in Zalonarus, to search the world for alternatives to our current reliance on Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Energy.

In conclusion, we will be more than happy to accept your offer to provide us with green energy solutions and maintenance services. Additionally, once a significant portion of the required infrastructure has been installed, we wish to purchase the technology used in the generation of green power, subjected, of course, to any terms you wish to apply. This will of course, benefit both parties concerned.

Please consider our cordial proposition.

Bulgari would be more than happy to open up a flagship store in Portsmouth. If the Bureau offers a deal on imports of raw materials from Anglian mines, Bulgari would happily provide a special "Portsmouth Discount" for products sold at locations within Anglia, which would amount to about 5% off all our products.
