Refugee Crisis: Caria considering relaxation of "closed country" policy

(NAUPLIA) The Government of Caria is considering relaxing its traditionally strict border controls and immigration restrictions in light of the unprecedented waves of refugees filling Gallo-Germania due to recent geopolitical developments. The newfound combat in the region comes while the effects of the Pannonian Crisis are still being felt, with many peaceful countries still struggling to integrate thousands of ex-Pannonian refugees of various ethnicities. Caria itself took upwards of 200,000 refugees at the height of the Pannonian crisis, and has since seen that figure decline to just south of 150,000. Still many remember scenes at the traditionally insular country's border that shock them, as many hundreds of thousands more tried to illegally scale barriers or force their way through riot police. Some even attempted to circumvent the closely guarded northern border by taking boats to Caria's coasts through Serbovia or daring the mountainous Carian-Serbovian border. These stunts raised tensions between Nauplia and its northern neighbour, forcing the former to commit the Carian military to aiding the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard in securing the country's frontiers from illegal crossings.

Recent weeks have seen a change in tone from Carian Prime Minister Georgios Nomikos, a longtime respected politician who has headed the Republic's government for some seven years, in addition to previously serving as Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs in successive administrations. Mr. Nomikos stated that the Carian Republic is monitoring the situation in light of the country's needs and the limits of the Carian people. Even more notable was the statement by the President of the Republic, His Excellency General Vasileios Petropoulos (ret.), who met with Archbishop Dionysios III of Nauplia to discuss ways in which the Orthodox Church of Caria could help the Carian people to contribute to the humanitarian needs of their neighbours, through the Church's many charities. For now, however, Carian authorities remain skeptical about loosening restrictions too quickly, for fear of repeating the massive refugee waves of the late 2010s. Few in Caria seem to blame them, as Carian public opinions displays a mix of sympathy and a preference for helping through foreign aid. Moreover, the Carian Government must balance its humanitarianism against its efforts to keep Caria neutral and out of any possible wars.

(NAUPLIA) The President of the Republic, Ret. Gen. Vasileios Petropoulos, made headwinds when he indicated his support for the candidacy of Prime Minister Georgios Nomikos as the country's next head of state. The speech, which was delivered at the Nauplia Chamber of Business, was attended by the leaders of the country's major entreprises, as well as several key political figures, making it a widely reported and watched event throughout the country, with important political connotations for any statements made by officials. His Excellency's speech marks the first point since the inception of the Second Republic that the candidacy of a non-military individual for the Presidency has received official support, making it an important milestone in the political evolution of the current political order.

Mr. Nomikos, who is the country's prime-ministerial incumbent, is a longtime shrewd politician who, prior to his nomination to his current post by the National Boule, served as a cabinet minister in several governments. During his tenure as Interior Minister, he instituted major administrative and police reforms, while his tenure as Justice Minister saw significant changes to Caria's legal codes and judicial structure. A scion of a family of provincial notaries and clerks from the country's north, Mr. Nomikos was the first politician in his family, something which naturally led him in the camp of the government party and opposite the political clans that dominate the opposition factions in the National Boule. While his candidacy to the Presidency has not yet been submitted to the Senate for verification and approval, today's speech by the President of the Republic all but confirms months of rumours regarding its imminence. If confirmed by the National Boule, Mr. Nomikos would be the first Carian head of state from the country's north since the election of Tiverios Kosmides to the Presidency in 1980.
