Refugee Crisis: Caria considering relaxation of "closed country" policy

(NAUPLIA) The Government of Caria is considering relaxing its traditionally strict border controls and immigration restrictions in light of the unprecedented waves of refugees filling Gallo-Germania due to recent geopolitical developments. The newfound combat in the region comes while the effects of the Pannonian Crisis are still being felt, with many peaceful countries still struggling to integrate thousands of ex-Pannonian refugees of various ethnicities. Caria itself took upwards of 200,000 refugees at the height of the Pannonian crisis, and has since seen that figure decline to just south of 150,000. Still many remember scenes at the traditionally insular country's border that shock them, as many hundreds of thousands more tried to illegally scale barriers or force their way through riot police. Some even attempted to circumvent the closely guarded northern border by taking boats to Caria's coasts through Serbovia or daring the mountainous Carian-Serbovian border. These stunts raised tensions between Nauplia and its northern neighbour, forcing the former to commit the Carian military to aiding the Gendarmerie and Coast Guard in securing the country's frontiers from illegal crossings.
Recent weeks have seen a change in tone from Carian Prime Minister Georgios Nomikos, a longtime respected politician who has headed the Republic's government for some seven years, in addition to previously serving as Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs in successive administrations. Mr. Nomikos stated that the Carian Republic is monitoring the situation in light of the country's needs and the limits of the Carian people. Even more notable was the statement by the President of the Republic, His Excellency General Vasileios Petropoulos (ret.), who met with Archbishop Dionysios III of Nauplia to discuss ways in which the Orthodox Church of Caria could help the Carian people to contribute to the humanitarian needs of their neighbours, through the Church's many charities. For now, however, Carian authorities remain skeptical about loosening restrictions too quickly, for fear of repeating the massive refugee waves of the late 2010s. Few in Caria seem to blame them, as Carian public opinions displays a mix of sympathy and a preference for helping through foreign aid. Moreover, the Carian Government must balance its humanitarianism against its efforts to keep Caria neutral and out of any possible wars.
