Easter Monday Transcript, commentary in italics – 9:00 PM | 21:00

His Serenity, the Doge is leading the procession into the Great Council Chambers, on this Lunedì dell'Angelo (Monday of the Angel), more commonly called Pasquetta. The last one to enter is the Prime Minister—serving in her role as Captain General. She is holding the ebony Baton of the Navy. She placed it on a specially made stand next to the speaker’s podium. The Doge gave the signal, and the rest of the cabinet has sat down. We’re going to stay quiet in the studio now as the Captain General gives her address.

“Citizens of the Republic, I come to you on a day of hope and sorrow. I will explain the present situation regarding Aresura and the diplomatic developments there in due course. But now I wish only to declare what you all already know: we have made peace, and it has been at cost to us. We cannot shy away from what the results of our territorial concessions to the Empire mean: millions of our loyal citizens who have fought so hard will now be displaced. And monetary compensation cannot account for a home, a community, and a past, forever lost. There is nothing we can do but morn this loss… as we have no recourse in this world to deal with the hundreds of thousands of dead.

“What had been bubbling under the surface has, to great consequence, made itself known. There were many loyal to the Empire in Aresura who had long opted out of our republican politics. We failed to make note or take action as policy on something that political scientists had been studying for a while. We became complacent in our democracy, and a foreign power found a way to exploit that. That is what led up to this war...”

The Prime Minister is taking a long pause right now, she seems to be t—

“I am sorry, my fellow citizens, for being so blind. I tried. We all tried. I cannot say if this is a success or a failure. The guns have fallen silent, thank God, but there has been a massive loss; one whose wounds may never truly be salved.

“We are conceding the Province of Santi Apostoli and part of the Province of Antiochia to the Empire of Pelasglia, in exchange they will take full responsibility for the war—as by Christ the Redeemer they should—meaning that they will pay for the losses experienced by the loyal citizens of the Republic during this transition. Speaking on this topic, if you need help relocating because of the territorial exchange, please contact the International Commission for the Aresuran Population Exchange at 72.26.24634767, or dial “scambio di pop (population exchange);” also you can visit online at scambio.ra or exchange.ra; if you are listening into this broadcast via short-wave, our steady stream is on AM1017. There is help available, please use it.

“To those who wished we had waited for our allies to land on Aresuran shores to ratify these terms—how many hundreds of thousands of our citizens would have died had that acre-by-acre affair been fought. I will not speak to our allies’ willingness to trade blood for land—but I can speak for the War Cabinet: no more blood was worth it.

“War criminals will be charged by our courts, all of Europe and the Pelasgians have agreed to such provisions. I do not have the will right now to recount all of the acts of brutality that have been wrought against our citizens. But… you know them; you have witnessed them; I will not insult you by trying to summarize this trauma now. There is no reparation or recompense that can redress what has been a horrifying loss of human life and human dignity.

“This is not likely the outcome that the citizens of the Most Serene Republic would have wished only a few months ago—but it is the reality we are now facing. I am sorry for that. For these changes, we will be compensated and those who will need brought to justice will be. But look hopeful: their government is new, in no small part our doing, and it is… optimistically… disgusted by what had come before it. This new regime has expressed interest not only in peace, but in an economic brotherhood in the Meridian Union that will cement our peoples together and make a war such as the one we just fought impossible—inconceivable in the future. This will be a painful process, and I know that many are not ready to forgive or even move forward, but we must. Because we will live together in peace—or die.

“In one of the Federation’s founding documents there is a line I have always liked, to paraphrase: we hold all nations and peoples to the same: in war, enemies; in peace, friends.

“I am terribly sorry, my fellow citizens, for what I have done and what I have failed to do. But I hope you will grant me some grace for what has transpired. As of now, I am resigning as the Chairwoman of the Radilan Liberal Party, the Blues. I am also resigning from the Senate, meaning an election in the Cattaro riding will be held in the near future. To my former constituents: thank you for your support. It meant everything to this peasant girl from Rhizon. Finally, I am resigning from the commission of Captain General and the office of Prime Minister, effective immediately. In my absence, Doge Clemente III, without opposition in the Senate, has named August Barnapola, presently the Republic’s Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Reds, to serve as the next Captain General of the Most Serene Republic.”

This is not surprising, right now is not a good time to call an election, after the one year transition—

“Those who are with God do not suffer, but that does not mean that we here on earth do not suffer for it. Yet we have persevered. Citizens, we did not give up the ship. We must now rebuild. We will rebuild. We will heal. We will morn. And we will push forward, God willing.”

You can probably hear it, after the now former Prime Minister finished her address, the chamber burst out into applause. There seems to be a lot of cathartic expressions…
