"This thing is a masterpiece," said the Petty Officer. "It could run under a Pelasgian carrier, and the crew wouldn't know one bit."

"That's why we made it, even if the range is limited. The other squadron is off to the west, but we like warmer vacations. Pity the locals don't like us very much."

"They'll have to learn in due time," replied the Lieutenant. "Cut out the active sonar. Run silent, run deep."

"Conn, Sonar. They stopped pinging. I can't hear them now. Last bearing was zero-eight-five at ten thousand yards, same course as before."

"Tony, rig for ultra-quiet running. Sonar, Conn. Keep your ears open. We'll try, but I don't expect miracles."
