Signups

Welcome to the Siyang Chess Classic, the first-ever international tournament sanctioned by the European Chess Federation! The Siyang Chess Classic is an open tournament, in which any registered ECF nation may participate. Participating nations may send up to two players to this event. Nations who wish to participate in this event may still sign up for the ECF in this thread: Signups will be open for approximately one week. Nations wishing to participate can sign up players using the following format:

Nation Name: Saamiland
Participating Player(s): Mikkel Ooli, Isku Vouvtatti

Setting

This tournament will be held in the beautiful Yigan Mingxing orThousand Stars Casino and Hotel in downtown Siyang. Siyang is a major metropolitan center and trade/finance hub in the Occident, considered the Pearl of the South-East. The beautiful and cosmopolitan city offers something for visitors and competitors of all types, with a wide array of entertainment and nightlife.

Format

The tournament will be a single-elimination tournament. After signups have concluded and the total number of players is known, players will be placed into a fixed bracket using a random number generator. I will try to keep players from the same nation well seperated in the brackets. In the event of an odd number of players, some lucky person might get a bye for the first round of the tournament. Again, this will be determined using a random number generator if/when it happens.

All players will play three-match series against their designated opponents. In the even of a draw at the end of this series, players will continue to play single matches until the next checkmate is achieved. The last series between the two finalists will be a seven match series. Again, in the event of a draw, matches will continue until one player achieves a checkmate.

Scoring/RP Bonus

This tournament will be scorinated using Chessinator v0.2. This program includes a a role-play bonus. The RP bonus is intended to encourage players to write original roleplay during the tournament, in this thread. This roleplay does not have to pertain directly to the chess tournament, although it may. After each day of the tournament, those nations which roleplayed that day will be given a boost of up to 1.0 skill points, helping to improve their players performance in subsequent matches. By taking advantage of the roleplay bonus, even players with low skill levels have a chance to improve their odds of advancing in the tournament, and this is strongly encouraged. The week long period of signups will be considered one day for the purposes of determining RP bonus, although participants may roleplay more than once. The total RP bonus given to each participant will be determined based upon length, quality of writing, and originality, and I will try to be as impartial as possible when making these determinations. A nations RP bonus will be applied to all players representing that nation in the Siyang Chess Classic.

Signup and let's have fun!

Well, I suppose it's time to close signups. With 17 participants, we will conduct the tournament with a group stage, followed by eliminations after that. Group Draw is as follows:
GROUP A
Isku Vouvtatti (Saamiland)
Selwyn Horton (Havenshire)
Francis Porchester (Cantignia)
Count Plinio di Cornaro (Potenza)
Gion Du (Jurchen)

GROUP B
Kristoffer Lainio-Stenbeck (Fennian Union)
Ewa Krasinska (Mezhist Union)
Johann Rudolphus (Ivernia)
Magnus Holger Karstensen (Danmark)

GROUP C
Thomas Franklin (Cantignia)
John McLoughlin (Ivernia)
Ercole del Rio (Potenza)
Kurokawa Tatsuo (Touzen)

GROUP D
Mikkel Ooli (Saamiland)
Johannes Syrjala (Fennian Union)
Kalju Rüütel (Saaremaa)
Gulbrand Ingvar Stefansen (Danmark)

All groups will play a triple round robin, scorinated over the course of three days. This will consist of single matches against each opposing player in one's group every day for three days. In the group stage, players will earn 2 points for each victory, and 1 point for each draw. Total numbers of wins, and then total losses will be used to break any ties in the group stage. In the case that players remain tied, a tie-breaking series of matches will be conducted, with the first player to win a match advancing. At the end of the group stage, the top two players from each group will move on to an elimination tournament according to the following structure:

Quarter-Finals
1st Place Group A vs. 2nd Place Group C
1st Place Group B vs. 2nd Place Group D
1st Place Group C vs. 2nd Place Group A
1st Place Group D vs. 2nd Place Group B

Subsequent stages will all consist of a five-match series between opposing players, with the player with the most wins in the series advancing. In the event of a tie, a series of tie-breaking matches will be conducted, until one player wins a match.

Semi-Finals
Quarter Finals winners (Groups A/C) play each other
Quarter-Finals winners (Groups B/D) play each other

3rd Place Playoff
Semi-Finals losers play each other

Finals
Semi-Finals winners play each other

Ewa Krasinska sipped on her tea. It was green, the oriental variety that had become popular in the old Imperium, and retained that popularity in the Sarmatia of today, far more so than the Gallo-Germanian tradition, owing to the fact that Swiecziema was, of course, in the midlands, close to Touyou. The cafe was posh, as to be expected from a high-class hotel such as Thousand Stars, and the concessions equally quality at a premium. It should not have been a problem, given the generous allowance allotted to her by the Sarmatian Chess League. However, Krasinska was one to run numbers through her head in order to keep her mind well-oiled. As one raised to respect the value of money, the mounting expenses were beginning to look just the slightest bit uncomfortable for her. Needless to say, while a person did not get her riled up, numbers, particularly monetary numbers, were her emotional weakness.

Her normally poker face almost slipped into a frown, until she adjusted her perspective, rationalising that yes, this was actually rather balanced, and she was getting her money's worth. The tea was simply excellent. The little note from Safarewicz also served to remind her that it was permissible in a way.

"Treat yourself out for each victory. A little reward goes a long way."

The Ice Queen - that was what they called her, not for the piece itself, but rather, an obscure metaphor for how a Queen resided in a castle, which reflected her defensive tactics. Well some of the more senior players referred to her as "Snow Princess", but surely, that was in jest. Or some kind of endearment. The way she saw it, only Borys could call her that and get away with it. Ewa took another sip from her cup. Yes, she had defeated Johann Rodolphus, the father of modern Ivernish Chess. That was no small achievement. But that group series could have gone either way, with the difference having been a single point. No small feat indeed, requiring no small amount of meticulous planning, adjustment, and execution. Each and every move required, demanded, a great amount of thinking, considering what could happen, and the chances of that happening. Whether to sacrifice or preserve, when to advance, how to manoeuvre... the Ice Queen left nothing to chance.

Ultimately, of course, no plan remained the same from beginning to end. That was exactly why someone had to be flexible... tactics working within the overall strategy.

Ewa glanced outside the window. It was a beautiful skyline, buildings nearby, mountains in the distance... Never mind that this was a different people with a different culture, different ideology... There was only one world though, right? One glorious construct, as emphasised by this Pearl of the Orient, Siyang. She took another sip and reclined into the soft, cushioned seat she had chosen. What could she see out there? How did this beauty reflect on somebody they considered "mechanical"? Ewa wondered herself... she looked past the blue sky, the white clouds, snow-capped mountains... instead, she saw three big clouds, seven little ones, five mountain peaks, several dozen buildings in various geometric configurations...

What was there to see? What beauty was there to witness? She appreciated beauty. It was just that she had her own understanding of it. The arrangement of those peaks, the subtle order in the discord of the clouds, the professional city planning... That was beauty to her. And it was something she believed was entirely valid. The trophy that awaited at the end of the Classic. That was also beautiful, from the precise combination of metals used in its construction, the exact symmetry in its shape.

Ewa finished her tea stood up to stretch, before sitting back down and calling a waiter for a refill. Another match was coming soon, yes. But for now, there was nothing wrong with relaxing, allowing her mind to wander from the rigours of the game - as much as she loved it - to more abstract ideas, such as the meaning of "beauty". How did somebody considered cold and mechanical by most people see beauty? Seeing the mathematical qualities in things, and how they all came together, was a unique perspective.

And she would stand by that conviction, no matter what other people said. The Ice Queen was still a queen. And queens were beautiful.
