Free City of Garenmarkt, Free Cities' League

It was an unusual day in the Free City of Garenmarkt, third-biggest city in the League and cultural capital of the Flemish Region. Despite the size, it had much become a living museum. With industrial activities transferred to other Flemish cities, Garenmarkt lived essentially from tourism and from its port. In its historical center, sorrounded by a canal suggestively called De Ring, small bridges, small canals and small houses gave the city the picturesque look that attracted tourists. Moreover, the City administration always made sure the old buildings looked as tidy as possible. Overlooking the historical center, three big towers - the Sint Salvator Kathedraal, the biggest Roman Catholic church in the League; the Onzere Vrouw Church, another big Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary; and the imponent belfry, a building with a 100 m tower built in 1300. Though it was never used as a place of government, it usually served as a place for meetings. It overlooked the city's main square, the Grote Markt - the big market, where in the Middle Ages traders from all parts of the then-independent County of Flanders, and not only, came to sell their stocks and make profit. Despite the commercial past, Garenmarkt was still a city transpiring Catholicism, in a largely Protestant League. Virgin Maries in many street corners overlooked, self-righteously, having written - 'I am immaculate'.

In the Big Market, main accesses had been closed, and the police heavily patrolled the area, waiting for the Austwegians. Johann Buddenbrook, President of the General Administrative Council and so, head of the League's executive, stood there, stiffly as always, trying to score another free trade deal after the success with Ivernia. This could save his reelection, and so, he wanted to push forward as quickly as possible. He envisioned northern Europe, relatively peaceful and democratic as a 'big market' very much like the one there used to be in the Grote Markt.

As the Austwegians arrived, Buddenbrook greeted the Foreign Minister (ooc: are you sending him or the PM?) while taking him to an old meeting room full of tapestries from the Middle Ages.

"Once more, welcome to this wonderful city. The Government of the Free City of Garenmarkt gracioulsy conceded us this space to have our discussions. Anything to drink?"
