Green Free State
Green Free State
The barracks was just outside the city up mix in the bamboo, vast humid valleys that encircled the metropolitan centre which was made of the commercial distant which skyscrapers shot out like bamboo shoots, the large port that always had cargo ships & fishing boats moving in and out like working ants it also had strange smell made up of mixture of fish guts & petrol that undercut the air. The place with the most foot traffic is the downtown area where the islands only College is and had hundreds of stalls dotted around it, students a lot of the time end up late to lectures due to two campus being across the main street so they had fight thousands of city workers who descend on the food stalls like locust during the lunch time rush.
The further north you went, the higher you went and it became more clear where most of the investment went, modern houses turned to run homes that need little bit of love to crack dens then finally wooden huts. The road too would bit by bit go from tarmac to dirt roads that had paths that lead winding around the forest.
The mountains and rainforest that cover 80% of the island's landmass were home to 1/4 of the population who lived in scattered villages surviving by running small scale farms and craft shops which the goods would be sold to the small towns on the outskirts of the trees once trade posts that popped up to feed demands of the new settlers are new tourist traps and streets of cheap hostels. The joke among locals was that they never have to refill cracks or potholes since they were filled by puke and other bodily fluids from young native gap year students spending their parent's money.
Technically a overseas territory of the Commonwealth, the government from the Green Isles of Prydain had hand-offs approach since the 1920s, the only physical presence they have is the few coastguard cutters docked in the city's port and a army base two hours away from Llyn Bochlwyld which had a small detachment from the Royal Flying Regiment who are the Island only air support available to the Island's emergency services. The eight helicopters would work around the clock providing a air ambulance service and air cover to the local police.
The base itself was the tale of two worlds like rest of the island, the old part building were originally part of a catholic mission with the church in the certain and a communal hall. The Church kept its original purpose with the army Chaplin service running it now, the communal hall was covenant to offices and officer's mess, a workshop and few shipping constrainers turned to enlist men & NCO accommodation also were on the site.
This part of the base was home to the Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles who had been on a continues deployment there since the late 1800s in theory they were still in service of the Lord Protector but are on permeant lease to the Chief Minister of Green Free State.
Further up from where the old part stood on the bottom of the hill, the bases small airfield stood. The top of the hill was cut off and flatten to build it alongside accommodation blocks and support buildings to more standards making Rifleman's blood boil of envy of the aircrew & aircraft engineers living there. To make it worse the riflemen had to eat in tents while both officers & NCOs of both regiments ate in the mess halls top of with the enlisted men of the Royal Flying Regiment enjoying the same luxury.
Living conditions wasn't only thing different of the two areas because the Mounted rifles had based there before the creation of the Commonwealth, the hierarchy while still openly royalist and practiced race segregation with the three different races in each of their companies. The actual native of the Island, the Paʻumotu are seen as honorary whites by the hierarchy. Primary reason because the Island's tribal chiefs banded together in 1780s forcing the Chief Minister to sign a peace treaty in 1803.
The descendants of former black slaves that worked the Island's coffee and cotton planation on the other hand were shoved in the church's basement they were only thirty of them in the site, assigned to be stewards, cooks and runners for the engineers on site.
The Commonwealth Defence Force personnel having 60% of the enlisted personnel made up of conscript the old part of base acting like a prison being with those that complete infantry training having their one year deployment being chosen by taking a name out of a hats. The place had habit having multiple AWOLs, truth was the Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles was where the army sent its brats and trouble makers. AWOLs won't checked up if they sneaked out or outrun those chasing after them. Large percentage of them would return after realising their passport were kept in a safe.
Brigadier Gruffin was in his office, finishing off his morning paperwork, he only just got back from his Christmas leave to be fair he didn't go far just want into the city like rest of the officers on the base he lived on the Island permanent. Unlike the others he didn't settle with a Paʻumotu woman or brought a house, he lived on the base Monday-Friday spending his weekends on a studio flat by city's waterfront. He swear the top brass would use local women as honey traps for the officers coming to end of their service. Officers were volunteers either applied at eighteen or were enlisted men that end up being selected during basic training. He had two years left and planned to stay away from the local honey no matter how sweet they seem to be when he went clubbing on the weekend.
In his office he had different paintings of the great battles and warriors of Prydain alongside the customary picture of the Lord Protector outside the office he wear the full dress with all the bells & whistles but alone thanks to humidity would his skin glue his clothes to his skin. When alone in his office he strip down the most he can get away. Leaving his tie off and few shirt buttons.
He was finishing his morning coffee when one of the NCOs knocked the down, he quickly tided himself up.
"Come in." He said.
The door open to show a small stocky figure it was the Sergeant Major Taneti who was the head provo being a Paʻumotu his thick layer of sweat on his dark olive skin gleamed. It was never good when he knocked.
"Sir, may I speak to about a matter?" Taneti asked after saluting to then stand to attention.
"Yes, Sergeant Major please you can be at ease." Mordecai replied pointing to the chair across the desk. Taneti relax then marched over to the chair.
"Now what matter would you like to talk about?" Gruffin asked.
"Sir, we have a issues with one of the new Privates." Taneti answered while wiping his face with a cloth, Gruffin was in middle putting away his paperwork.
"Please excuse me Sergeant Major, you caught when I was at the tail end of my reports but please carry on."
"Thank you Sir, the Private in question is-" before Taneti could carry on speaking Gruffin questioned.
"Is it that little flea bag who I believe nearly had the record time of attempt AWOL?" He asked turning to look at the Sergeant Major who nodded.
"Not done it again?" Gruffin asked rolling his eyes.
"No sir he actually turn up back from first weekend leave but he turned drunk Sunday night so we thrown him n the drunk tank." Taneti told him. Gruffin slammed his desk in annoyance.
"So you took the time to come up here to tell something you can sort yourself or can put in your daily personnel standards report." He said snapping at the Sergeant Major.
"No Sir, it is something worse." Taneti said slightly panicking the Bridger was polite even to the black stewards & cooks but he was quick to temper.
"Explain." Gruffin said sharply locking his eyes on the Sergeant Major's face. who pulled out a note pad from his top shirt pocket.
"At 01:39 Private Charles of A Company was seen stumbling into Madam Gourdan's lounge by lance Corporal-" Taneti said reading off his notebook
"The new blood went to the local ho house tell me something new." He turned his back to face the fan in the room.
"Sir we have a reliable source saying he left with a coloured woman."
Gruffin slammed his fists on the desk and demanded to see the flea bag.
...................
By now Charles was handcuffed and stripped naked, then ordered to face the wall every time he turned or answered back the guards would hoes him down with a firefighting hose. The jail house door swing opened with Sergeant Major entering with the Bridger just behind. The two guards stood at full attention.
"At ease everyone, can one of you kindly explain to me what is going?" asked while staring at Vaughn.
"Sir, Private Charles is accused of bringing the name of the Queen Alex-" One of the guards replied but the Private cut him off.
"Fuck off I never had choice on being here!" He shouted turning around to face them down, the guard next to the one that he got cut off went and slammed the cell bars with his long wooden stick.
"Shut it Private you are already on thin ice!" The guard barked, the other one continued.
"Private Charles -" Again he was interrupted when the Private spit on shoe of the guard glaring through the bars. Who responded by grabbing his hair to spank his fore head on the bars.
"GENLEMEN!" The Bridger screamed on top of his voice, the guard then let go of the Private.
"This not how we do things in the Rifles, now if you two would leave me and the Sergeant Major I need teach our young friend the importance of manners." He said, the two guards left.
The Private had backed away to cell's back wall, the Sergeant Major unlocked the cell door and entered first before the Bridger.
"Hands up in the air." Taneti ordered the Private to then pat him down, when he turned around to face the Sergeant Major he got sharp kick in the groan area, the force of watch dropped him to the floor. When he tried to stand, he got another kick this time to to the chest.
"Stay down there where you belong you worthless maggot." Taneti told him the force of the two kicks mixed in with a hangover he started to blackout. The Sergeant Major got to his level to slap his face.
"Stand to attention, your commanding officer is addressing you!" Taneti barked, the Private didn't answered so the Bridger dig his boot into his chest.
"Listen I don't if you don't like it here or whenever you chosen to come here but at the Rifle when you are here, you don't mix drinks."
