The Wildlife Conservation Society, founded in 1895, has the clear mission to save wildlife and wild places across the globe. Our story began in the early 1900’s when we successfully helped the Životinje Dalmatian recover on the in the Western Woods, and introducing the canine as a household pet. Today, we protect many of the world’s iconic creatures here and abroad, including Yaks of Kryobaijan, elephants in Vangala, Moose in Fjäderholmarna, and ocean giants in our world’s amazing seascapes.

During our 114 years, we have forged the power of our global conservation work and the management of our National Parks in the Blue Union Captaincy to create the world’s most comprehensive conservation organization. We currently manage about 500 conservation projects; and educate millions of visitors at our five living institutions in Maršalgrad on important issues affecting our planet. Our parks include: the Divovia Zoo, Plavi-Divovia Aquarium, Muntenia National Park, and the Komenoge Foothills.

With a commitment to protect 25 percent of the world’s biodiversity, we address four of the biggest issues facing wildlife and wild places: climate change; natural resource exploitation; the connection between wildlife health and human health; and the sustainable development of human livelihoods. While taking on these issues, we manage more than 200 million acres of protected lands around the world, with more than 200 scientists on staff.

The WCS parks in the Plavi-Divovia Captaincy welcome 4 million visitors each year, including helping the region to educate millions of schoolchildren in science and conservation issues. We hope our work in turn inspires millions to take action to protect the natural resources that are so important to all life on our fragile Earth.

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Plavi-Divovia Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on Europe.

The wild yak has a dense undercoat of soft, close-matted hair which is covered by generally dark brown to black outer hair. Its long, shaggy coat reaches almost to the ground. The wild yak can weigh up to 1000 kg (2200 lb) with a shoulder height of over 2 m (6.5'). It occurs in treeless uplands, including plains, hills, and mountains, from as low as 3200 m (10,500') up to the limit of vegetation at about 5400 m (18,000'). It stays in high areas with permanent snow during the warmer months of August and September, and spends the rest of the year at lower elevations. The wild yak grazes on grasses, herbs and lichens. Ordinarily it gathers in groups of 10 - 30 or more, but it may occasionally be observed in large groups of 100 - 200.

The wild yak was once numerous and widespread on the entire Central European plateau. Currently it is found almost exclusively in Kryobaijani plateau and adjacent highlands. Wild yak distribution is highly clumped, with most animals in widely scattered herds, concentrated in the areas with little disturbance by humans. A survey conducted in 2003 found increasing populations of wild yak compared to previous surveys taken 10 years earlier.

Chairman of Conservation

It is an honor and a privilege to serve the flora and fauna of Europe. Napoleon III, should be proud of himself for contributing to such a cause! All Marquette and its generous leadership can possibly do is continue to educate the youth about the environment which surrounds them, and nominate a creature native of Marquette that represents the spirit of the nation to our Animal of the Month.

The Kryobaijani government reaffirms its commitment to the noble cause of the WCS. We see the biodiversity of Europe as a wondrous resource, not to be squandered or cast aside by humanity.

Aside from the obvious beauty and splendor with which our natural world is replete with, we should note that the fate of the European environment is intrinsically linked with that of our own. The Kryobaijani yak, as featured by the WCS currently, bears on its broad, furry shoulders the responsibility for a small, but important portion of the Kryobaijani agricultural sector. Acting as a beast of burden, in addition to providing wool and dairy, it contributes in a significant way to the national productivity. In the unlikely event that the Bos Kryobaijanis should vanish from the USSK, our economy would suffer, to say nothing of the Kryobaijani national identity.

In any case, we congratulate the WCS on its phenomenal work to date, and would encourage it to continue its valiant efforts in defense of Europe's natural environment.

- ANIMAL OF THE MONTH -
Marquette Monachus Schauinslandi

You must be registered for see images

Marquette monk seals are pinnipeds, which is the order of marine mammals including seals, sea lions and walruses. There are believed to be about 34 different species of pinnipeds. All are characterized by having large eyes, prominent snouts, streamlined shapes and four swimming flippers which typify the order. In fact, the word pinniped means "feather-" or "fin-footed" in Latin. Although they have successfully adapted to life in the sea, pinnipeds are thought to have evolved from terrestrial mammals about 20 million years ago and continue to retain strong ties to land. Their closest modern day terrestrial ancestors are the bear and the dog. Some biologists consider the pinnipeds to be so closely related to these species as to include them as members of order carnivora which includes the dogs, bears, wolves, raccoons and others. Whichever classification scheme you choose, the pinnipeds can be divided into three distinct families; 1) the Phocidae which are the "true," or earless seals 2) the Otariidae, the eared seals and sea lions, and 3) the Odobenidae, which includes only the walrus.

The Marquette monk seal, Marquette Monachus Schauinslandi, is Marquette's only pinniped. It is a species that is considered endemic to the islands. The word endemic means that the species is unique to a region (i.e., is found no where else) and is believed to have evolved there. The monk seal is one of Marquette's two endemic mammals.

The Commonwealth Ministry of the Exterior

The Commonwealth and all her assorted territories in Coronado and Ferèzanno applaud the efforts of the Wildlife Conservation Society; both for the preservation of rare animal species, and the dedication of the society towards the conservation of the ecological habitat in which said species' live within. Owing to the feats of the WCS in this endeavor, the Ministry of the Exterior in accordance with the Bureau of Travel and Trade, owing to segment of restrictions and appeals to the Bureau of Conservation - the Commonwealth would be interested in collaborating with the Wildlife Conservation Society in establishing similar national parks, forests, and conservation area's within the Commonwealth, specifically within the Coronado and Rio Seguirà prefecture's.

This new-found effort owes to the recent predations upon the Lama glama species by unexpected population surges in that of Panthera onca species, both of which inhabit the vast majority of the Commonwealth (or did prior to extensive urbanization in certain areas). At the behest of the Bureau of Conservation, certain area's will be allocated to the preservation of land and animals, and the aid of the Wildlife Conservation Society is requested in this, the society's experience in such endeavors profound. The National Parks established (or international more accurately) would be under the administration of the Wildlife Conservation Society - which is offered free operation within the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth recognizes the efforts of the society, and through this hopes to assist it.

Sincerely yours,
Benito M. Nadanèz,
Minister of the Exterior

- ANIMAL OF THE MONTH -
Životinje's Castor-Vodazvijer

You must be registered for see images

The vodazvijer (water beast) is a primarily nocturnal, large, semi-aquatic rodent. The Castor Family includes two extant species, Castor canadensis (native to most of Europe) and Castor Vodazvijer (Životinje). Vodazvijer's are known for building dams, canals, and lodges (homes). They are the second-largest rodent in the world (after the capybara). Their colonies create one or more dams to provide still, deep water to protect against predators, and to float food and building material. This creature is a front runner in a Union wide election to find Životinje's National Animal for the Decade, held currently by the Živ-Mountain Hare.

Vodazvijer's are more than intriguing animals with flat tails and lustrous fur. Ancient Živ's called the vodazvijer the "sacred center" of the land because this species creates rich habitats for other mammals, fish, turtles, frogs, birds and ducks. Since vodazvijer's prefer to dam streams in shallow valleys, much of the flooded area becomes wetlands. Such wetlands are cradles of life with biodiversity that can rival tropical rain forests.

Besides being a keystone species, vodazvijer reliably and economically maintain wetlands that can sponge up floodwaters (the several dams built by each colony also slows the flow of floodwaters), prevent erosion, raise the water table and act as the "earth's kidneys" to purify water. The latter occurs because several feet of silt collect upstream of older beaver dams, and toxics, such as pesticides, are broken down in the wetlands that beavers create. Thus, water downstream of dams is cleaner and requires less treatment .

National Safari and Wildlife Protection Society

As Burgesia's largest non-governmental organisation working on issues regarding the conservation, research and restoration of the environment, we commend the WCS. It is our hope that the two groups can work together to protect not only the diverse wildlife of Burgesia, but endangered animals right across Europe.

The Empire of Cakchiquel and the Confederation of Mesoamerican states holds a sense of deep mistrust towards international organizations. The Empire has long been proud of it's ecological nature, taking steps from independence towards environmental sustainability. The Empire would like to point out reasons for cynicism towards the Wildlife Conservation Society as it currently stands is a hypocritical agency. The various regimes trumpeting it's work revolve around the economics of exploitation. Exploitation is inherently opposed to ecological sustainability. The government considers membership in such an international body to be moot in point. There is nothing to expect from the WCS.

- ANIMAL OF THE MONTH -
Wild Boar/Hog/Razorback

You must be registered for see images

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a species of pig, including at least 16 subspecies, and part of the biological family Suidae. It is the wild ancestor of the domestic pig, an animal with which it freely hybridises. Wild boar are native across much of Wester Europe, the Sarmatian Region (including the Kryobajani Mountains, home of the Yak) and much of the western half of the Oikawan Empire. Populations have also been artificially introduced in some parts of the world`; principally for hunting. Elsewhere, populations have also become established after escapes of wild boar from captivity.

Aulranian Minister of the Environment and Wildlife preservation and the Minister of Finance

Concerned about the well-being of wildlife and fauna everywhere, the United People's Republic of Aulrania would like to contribute to the WCS financially to ensure the preservation and safety of animals who cannot defend themselves everywhere as well as the flowing environment that each nation in Europe holds dearly. We would like to match our neighbour Freiheit's 1 million donation which could be extended in the near future.

The Freiheitians would like to nominate the next animal of the month to be the Grey Wolf which is an endangered species that the Freiheitian Ministry of the Interior has taken many steps to set up reserves for this great animal within our borders. We hope that the rest of the world soon realizes the need to protect this animal, whose numbers are dwindiling everyday.

Patrons to European Wildlife are increasingly rare in Europe, our will preserve our natural environments is being tested by the conflicts of our day. Freiheit and Aulrania are quite welcome to join us in the charitable efforts WCS endeavors to perform.

The Freiheitian Grey Wolf has been considered, and accepted to fulfill the role of this months celebrated animal - officially in the second half of march.

Aware of our diverse maritime life and plentiful unique species of birds, amphibians and insects, and aware also of the deletrious effect that our rapid commercial growth has had on our unique ecosphere, the Makai Archipelagos Congress wishes to join the WCS, and allow the WCS to build an Office in the Makai Islands, and assist in promoting more enviroment-friendly "Green" Tourism and in advising on ongoing commercial development, to preserve our unique ecosystem and its many diverse species.

The Empire of Cakchiquel has long been committed to environmental protection and preservation of wildlife throughout Europe. The Empire of Cakchiquel maintains a substantial government policy to encourage sustainable resource management, and maintains a high priority towards environmental protection. For this reason I am proud to disclose that the Consulate Assembly of the Imperium of Cakchiquel has endorsed a yearly donation of 100 million euronotes to fund for the protection of wildlife throughout European regions under stress.

Under Consul for Cantingia, Spiderplant White at the diplomatic attache in Vesper, Cantignia on live Cakchiquelian television

Cantignia maintains a position within geopolitics of strong respect to MesoAmerican peoples due to our mutual commitment to the cause of protecting our planet. The environment is the most powerful resource Europe maintains. Environmentalism is just one aspect of the shared humanity and interest in global health between the Imperium of Cakchiquel and the democratic state of Cantignia. I, and the Mayans of Cakchiquel look forward to a continued international effort by the WCS to protect Europe's global treasure.
