Politics
In an unexpected publicity move by the current defense administration, key defense committee member Alejo de Rivaz attended a church sermon in a low income Mulatto area in the uptown of Concepción. Rivaz spoke briefly regarding current policies after the service, commenting on the controversial ‘colonization’ policies. The recently implemented bills which would see an increase in federal funding in the central desert and Sierra Nevada areas for the construction of new roads, railways and settlements has also caused concerns amongst aboriginal populations and other organizations. Some individuals, especially the very outspoken Ernesto Guzmán, believe that this is an attempt at so called “neo-colonialism”, an attempt to populate the interior and Rif area with ‘white Andaluzians’. Rivaz hailed the bills as being of “significant measure”, claiming that “progress and prosperity are all that can result from further internal development.”

Teniente Oidor Darío Cruz de los Ríos resigns amidst accusations of corruption and racketeering. The Zaragozza Audiencia junior Oidor had served for nearly fourteen years in the post before the first accusations were brought up nearly a week past. The recent revelation of key evidence in the case against Ríos finally resulted in his formal resignation and arrest this morning. He remains in the custody of the Servicio Nacional de Seguridad (national security service). Ríos is currently pending a federal hearing in the capital city, where most onlookers expect him to be convicted to a federal penitentiary.

Feminist protest group “Libertad de la Mujer” organizes a rally in the downtown of the capital city. Local law enforcement remains skeptical, has refused the organization a permit for a public demonstration. Charges of chauvinism, sexism, and political preference have been shot towards the local police department. It is expected that charges will soon be filed.

Peace activists ironically pelted the Akhaltsikhe embassy in the capital city with stones today, in protest to the current policies of the apartheid and militarist regime in place there. All fifteen of the individuals involved in the incident were detained by local law enforcement. There were no injuries, although the embassy reports a total of thirteen thousand Reals worth of damage done to the actual building.

Finance

Andaluzian shipbuilding Conglomerate ‘Marinosur’ announces intention to sell Erto del Sur shipyard within the city of San Lazaro. Suffering an average profit defecit of nearly 4.4% over the last twelve fiscal quarters, the conglomerate has decided to make available the facility to foreign or domestic purchase. Potential buyers include Mariosur’s competitor ‘Alveradosia’, as well as the current defense administration. It is not yet certain if there is any federal interest in the facility, but it is apparent that it would be preferable to all that it remaining operational, it being a key employer in the city.

Tirta Foundation likely to go out of business by the end of the next fiscal quarter, anonymous executive announcing last evening during a final weekend press conference that the corporation is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. The pharmaceutical firm has been struggling to compete with both international and domestic competition, finally forced to take exorbitant sums in loans. Many employees with the Foundation have already applied for post-bankruptcy unemployment benefits. Employing nearly 50,000 individuals across Andaluz, there is expected to be significant fallout from the final bankruptcy of the company.

Weather
Temperatures along the southern rim coast reach in the upper 30's as per expectations. Drought worries prompt local authorities to shut down non-essential water pipelines, water rationing enforced upon Ciudad del Magellan until temperatures drop to more 'reasonable levels'.

Thunderstorms in the lower bush area of the Sierra Nevada prompt forest fire worries. Fire officials prompt locals to get ready to evacuate in "moment's notice" should their fears be confirmed.

High winds in the west, chance of dust storms in the central desert at 45%. Aboriginals begin to migrate southwards into the Sierra Nevada once again, as per their usual seasonal migratory patterns.

We indicate our keen interest in acquiring the Erto del Sur shipyards in the city of San Lazaro. Our liquid assets, international connections, and long-term focus will enable the shipyard to continue operation, become solvent and provide employment to the people of the city.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Interior Infrastructure project binned
The controversial bill which was intended to increase funding for infrastructure projects to the interior has finally been shot down and repealed in the Consejos Junior. The funding, totaling an approximate amount of about fifteen billion Reals has instead been redirected in it's entirety to the area's of education and public healthcare for this year's final two fiscal quarters. Continued opposition to the bill in the senior branch of the Consejos, combined with wavering public support for the project, finally resulted in the defense committee binning the idea and resigning defeat. The project's intended goal was the creation of newer roadways and railroads in the interior of the nation, which would directly link all the nation's coastlines directly. The bill was lauded by both the Christian Democrats, as well as, surprisingly, the Worker's Republican Congress.

The measures however met with unexpected resistance in the senior Consejos, where the Social Union has prominence. Senior Councilman Leonardo Alvarez criticized the bill as "enticing instability" and being "too costly to maintain". Most of the concerns brought up were those in regards to the aboriginal population in the territories affected, it yet remaining uncertain how the indigenous peoples would react to the measures. The interior territory is the only one within the nation which doesn't have an Andaluz ethnic majority, and as such remains largely autonomous from the rest of the Continental Republic. Many within the junior branch of the Consejos are still excited with expectations that a similar measure will be introduced, and it is believed by spectators that politicians within the Christian Democrat party will suggest another bill similar to the original - which will include a few critical revisions so as to engender support from the left.

New bidder for San Lazaro shipyard
With the Hajr based Royal Petroleum Wealth Department showing an interest in the purchase of the Erto del Sur shipyards, the Marinosur conglomerate's own interest has been piped. The sale would be the first of such a precedence to a major international firm, the prospect causing some concern amongst Marinosur's competitors. Alveradosia upped it's initial bid by a further thirty million Reals this morning, a rather paltry addition, though the meaning of it is clear. Marinosur has made no press release regarding the sale as of yet, and the executives appear to yet be deciding upon which bidder is offering (or would offer) the best terms. Financial analysts spectate that the opening of the market, especially in San Lazaro, to international firms, may not be as detrimental as otherwise predicted.

Defense Committee cancels naval exercises, cites funding concerns
The regular Winter naval exercises north of the Hidalgo Tip, the northernmost point of Andaluz, have been canceled this year as per a decision of the defense committee. With the legislature channeling military funds into what it considers more 'crucial areas', the ability of the armed forces to maintain larger and more expensive vessels has proportionately decreased. The Committee, through spokesperson Agustino de Santana cited funding concerns along with current weather conditions as the reason for the cancellation. A further addendum was made in which the committee promised to instead hold a number of smaller and more frequent exercises over the course of the year, including fewer personnel and vessels. This is expected by onlookers and by the committee to be a cheaper alternative.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Emergency defense committee meeting called, National Congress communes
Pending a further resolution on the part of the Council of Nations in regards to the current state of affairs in the German 'Free State', the defense committee and the national congress have both called together emergency conferences with all members of either organization in attendance. Ever since the Sarmatian intervention in the Free State's civil war, numerous other nations have declared an intention to send their own contingents to support either side. A spokesperson for the defense committee commented by saying that "we [the committee] are greatly concerned with the current conflict in the Free State. One of the chief fears is the spread of this war past the national boundaries of the Free State and out into the Implarian Ocean." He went on to add, "this would be detrimental to Andal interests in the area." The genocide of the Otchi populations in the Free State is another issue that is on the agenda in both the mutual-meetings and in the Council of Nations.

Prior to the actual conferences, the defense committee authorized an elevation in the nation's defense readiness condition up a single level, with personnel on active duty in the Caprica naval station called up to alert status. At the moment it isn't entirely certain what Andaluz's involvement in this conflict will entail, nor in any potential solution to it. However, the national congress (via the council of nations representative, Cristina de Vasquez) has promised Andal military and political support for a Council of Nations intervention in the Free State.

The National Congress has also announced an intention to accept any and all Otchi refugees unilaterally into the nation, as well as any other populations affected by the conflict in the Free State. Due to the current nature of the fighting, the accepted populations will be screened for chemical and biological agents prior to admission into the nation, and will be temporarily interned in refugee facilities prior to a formal declaration of residency within the Continental Republic.

14 killed in drug bust in south-central Andaliya
Federal police recently raided a poppy farm in the aboriginal settlement zone in south-central Andaliya, following an anonymous tip given to the local sheriff's department concerning possible heroin distribution. The farm, located near to the IkhSafi annual tribal gathering spot was seized by armed policemen following resistance by the residents, in which two policemen were wounded by gunshot. Fourteen were killed during the federal assault on the poppy farm, evidence found inside to definitively suggest the use of the land to produce illicit opiates. Of the fourteen which were killed, two were identified as being individuals involved in the prison break-out from the Saint Bartholomeo penitentiary near Agusan del Norte last year.

Committee OK's Humanitarian support for occupied areas
Article written by Héctor Cruz, published by El Republicano independent commission

Having been in intense deliberation since yesterday morning, the defense committee has put forth a single plan before the national congress; to send humanitarian aid to war-stricken regions in the so-called Germanic 'Free-State'. The plan was drafted almost exclusively by Contraalmirante Ignacio del Rivadavia, which would see the peaceful transfer of such fundamental supplies as food, water, and medical supplies to specific zones in the south and west of the nation.

Per preexistent agreements with Sarmatian (Wielkosarmatska) officials, the dispatched supplies will be stringently monitored by personnel from the Imperial Armed Forces before being allowed for public distribution in specially designated areas within the Sarmatian zone of occupation. A spokesperson for the defense committee has stated that "no supplies that are dispatched from Andaluz will reach Faust's genocidal regime." He went on to add that, "all that is dispatched is intended entirely to help support civilian populations stricken by the conflict." Furthermore, another part of the same proposed plan is a provision to transmit military supplies (as announced, specifically ammunition and surplus aeroplanes) to the latest target of Germanic aggression, the High Kingdom (Ard Riocht) of Warre. In the case of the Sarmatian occupation zone, all aid will be shipped via agreed military channels and through the standard methodology.

Defense officials will be accepting donations of any surplus foodstuffs any Andal family is willing to contribute to the humanitarian effort, with food drives being held in schools and public centers across the entirety of the nation. The Tirta Foundation donated 10% of it's total pharmaceutical stocks this morning as the announcement went public, which is expected to go a long way towards helping the guiltless citizenry of the afflicted nation. These provisions will be sent to the occupation zone in unarmed cargo-container vessels with a minute escort of Andal Navy ships, as Warreic fishing boats have reported some piracy in the seas nearby. Analysts expect St. George to be the port of arrival, as many believe that the city will fall to Sarmatian control by the time the aid arrives.

There have been some concerns voiced in the national congress and by critics of the plan over the particular choice in the departure of goods. "There should be no distinction by national occupation," An anonymous congressman said, "Citizens in the north are no less affected by the war as those in the south." Similar accusations of political bias on the part of the defense committee have been voiced by critics of the current committee and of President Rossi. Despite this, the committee has remained committed to this plan, and it intends to follow it through.

"Generosity is a trait of man rarely exercised," Bishop Antonio Vegas commented, "But it is one which can heal even festering wounds with the greatest speed."

Hidalgo Tip exercises rescheduled, activity in Vandal Sea to resume
Article written by Rodrigo de Gusta, published by El Republicano independent commission

Despite the cancellation of the annual winter exercises north of the Hidalgo tip (and in the Vandal Sea), the national congress has reneged on it's previous measures to pull funding from the military. As a result, Reals have poured into the Navy en masse, and the exercises have been rescheduled. As a precautionary measure, the date at which they are to begin and end has not yet disclosed by defense committee officials. It remains a public secret that this most recent move is simply a reaction against the growing instable political climate in the Implarian.

Of particular note is the announcement that regular naval patrols (which were discontinued during the last year) throughout the Vandal Sea will once again resume. The frigates and corvettes which sailed there were primarily searching for lost fishing vessels or the rare shipwrecked mariner, it remaining an excellent way to maintain naval readiness. Just like the annual exercises, they were discontinued due to a lack of funding, but were recently once again re-approved by the congress and the defense committee. Considering the breadth of the Vandal Sea, these regular movements do not impede international trade nor violate the sovereignty of any nation or international laws.

The first such patrol will begin this evening, with the missile cruiser Ernesto de Rivadevia and the frigate Mauricio Hernandez departing from the military piers at Agusan del Norte. It has been revealed that the Mauricio Hernandez, a vessel equipped with numerous electronic warfare suites, will be straying close to the eastern coast of the continent of Himyar. It is believed that the source of the 'goatreich' cyber-terrorist hoax originated in the area east of Abruzicistan, and an assignment has been given to the venerable craft to briefly investigate. The hoax caused some alarm in Gallo-Germania, where numerous foreign agencies treated faked communiques legitimately. Some confusion erupted with the agencies replied and garnered a response from the 'goatreich', which was very swiftly revealed to be a hoax once the collective European community realized such a nation doesn't exist anywhere in the world.

 Orgúana drug cartel disbanded by federal police last night. A grand total of 122 members were arrested as the final stronghold of the organization near the Sierra Nevada town of Ciudad Carlos was raided in its entirety by law enforcement agents.

 Congressman Enrico Astoriad found dead in his hotel room in downtown Caprica, having hung himself from the ceiling fan. Dying at the age of 49, there are suspicions that his suicide was assisted or in fact a murder. The local police department is currently beginning a full investigation.

 Blizzard in the south of Catamarca del Este damages electrical lines, two counties without electricity for the duration of the current weather patterns. The local electricity company promises the speedy restoration of service to all paying customers in the regions as soon as possible.

War across Europe, Council of Nations indecisive
Founded as an institution to facilitate and promote cooperation in international law, security, social development and economic progress, the Council of Nation's supposed ultimate goal is also achieving a final world peace. The security council proves itself unwilling to commit itself to any resolution in any of Europe's most recent intra-national military conflicts, twiddling their thumbs and lavishing in their burdensome bureaucracy. Civil dissidence and armed revolt have been de facto the common state of affairs in the Himyarite nation of Akhaltsikhe for the greater part of two months now, with the southern Uroduan-majority areas declaring themselves independent of the former Akhaltsikhe segregationist regime.

Most disappointing is the refusal of the Council of Nations to grant any semblance of recognition or acknowledgement to the recently declared Jurzani Confederation. The current policy of the Council to unilaterally maintain the international status quo does not necessarily serve to the interests of any ethnic, political, or religious group. In some cases, such as the rogue regime in the Implarian 'Freedom State', it is instead preferable that governments be displaced such as to provide for the welfare of an impoverished and persecuted peoples. Rather than setting a precedent for incidents where ethnic minorities are involved, there is instead a double standard formed. Though it can be argued that each situation is unique, they should not all be handled in a different matter. There is no doubt that the majority of Europe views that the Freedom State needs to be disarmed, democratized, and for the Otchi to receive their own independent nation-state. In the war which the Sarmatian bloc leads against the Freedom state such are the stated goals of the invasion, the final dismantlement of a tyrannical and oppressive regime. Whereas the Council condones intervention on the behalf of the Otchi against the Freedom State, it condemns it on the behalf of the Uroduah.

This sort of conduct on the part of the international community is wholly unacceptable, simply showcasing a bias held for one regime over another. If a government doesn't act with the best interests of all of it's people in mind, then it shouldn't be considered to be a legitimate government in any sense. With this in mind, it is very easily argued that the former government of Akhaltsikhe (as it isn't at all certain whether it still exists in any true form) should not be considered the legitimate government for all territories that it encompassed.

Instead of opening negotiations with the newly declared Uroduah government, to attempt to reach a compromise or perhaps even convene some sort of resolution to recognize the Jurzani nation, the Council instead plans to mandate two mutually irredentist and nationalistic regimes to act on the behalf of the Council of Nations. Is this not a flawed approach? Talemantros itself refused to recognize the Jurzani nation-state, and there is no doubt present in our minds that it will attempt to dismantle any semblance of Uroduah self-governance within the boundaries of the former state of Akhaltsikhe.

It remains irrelevant whether or not the same Executor or cabinet is placed back upon the pedestal in Akhaltsikhe, as it will not represent all the people of the nation. Within the frontiers reside two major ethnic groups, the Georgians and the Uroduah. In the former government, the latter were not at all represented. Jurzan makes no claim to represent the Georgian side; and it is almost impossible for us to conceive why Akhaltsikhe cannot simply be split into two nation-states, one for either ethnicity. Such would appear a logical compromise, but it would act against the interests of the two states that have been mandated (or soon will be) with the authority to act on the part of the 'international community'. A free and independent Jurzan would go against the interests of the 'Himyarite Freedom Alliance' (a rather ironic name). The simple ideological divide between the reactionary Empire and the newly-founded state is apparently enough for military action, with Jurzan being led in some part by what can be considered far-left leaning Uroduan politicians. It is a horrid demonstration of just how little Europe as a whole has progressed since the Great War; with the premise of 'maintaining national stability' being a good enough causus belli then as it appears to be now. We cannot fault the Empire for acting in it's own best interest, but again we have to raise the question we raised before. Does the Emperor truly keep the best interests of his people in mind, or instead that of his Empire (and therefor his own personal demesne)?

What is perhaps most disappointing about this whole affair is the failure of our own government to present any sort of solution or even commentary in the General Assembly or otherwise. Continuously, President de Rossi's government has shown a lack of initiative in involving itself with the greater world. Why should Andaluz stand by and idly watch when other peoples are trampled upon? That isn't at all what a good Samaritan does, and we hope that the stance of de Rossi and his government changes in time.

With international confidence sinking in the ability of Himyar to maintain it's own status quo, investors are finding it hard to continue pumping funds into the economies of practically any nation which borders the former Akhaltsikhe. It is yet uncertain what condition the oil rigs of the former Akhaltsikhe remain in, but exports from the nation have almost entirely ceased. The involvement of Imperial Sarmatia in the Freedom State's civil war has also led to a greatly increased use of petroleum for it's own armed forces, the export of oil from northern Europe as a whole significantly dropping. Still though, what does this mean for the average Andal? Well, it's not certain as of yet. Andaluz does maintain some domestic capability for natural gas extraction from the Vandal Sea and it's subsequent refinement into usable gasoline, but the rate of consumption is far greater than that of production. This will simply mean an increase in gas prices for the average consumer, not at all apparent how much or for how long a duration.

But we digress. There's not much that can be done about this until our own government (and subsequently others) take a stance against such pointless and hypocritical behavior.

 Department of Defense announces lease on Erto del Sur shipyards in the city of San Lazaro, putting to an end the hopes of numerous corporations to purchase them from the bankrupt Marinosur business conglomerate. Putting forth a bid of 99 billion Reals, the Department of Defense claimed the docks earlier this morning as a national installation - with plans being swiftly drafted up by renown Agusan del Norte based engineer Juan Pérez Hérnandez to modernize the facilities to suit the needs of the Andal naval forces. Speculation runs rampant over the construction of newer vessels for the navy.

 The Worker's Republican Congress announces a merge with the similarly minded Union-Trade Congress. Following a televised (on channel 12) meeting and ceremony, the two left-leaning political groups merged to form the Social Union. With the conclusion of the negotiations, a total of 76 politicians within the social union now sit in the Consejos. Analysts believe this will result in little change to the current political atmosphere, as the two groups tended to vote in blocs prior to this merge regardless. With a share of 389 seats, the National Republican party still remains dominant within the Consejos.

 Baseball season to begin early this year, say ABA officials. The new stadiums constructed in certain major cities across Andaluz will allow for the games to resume prior to the actual end of snowfall in the west and the east. The first game is scheduled to be between the Agusan del Norte ASA-club 'Halconos' against the Libertadas 'Libertadores'.
