Opinions: Imperials, the Army, and their homely popularity contest
an editorial by Klaus Grafenberg, found on WW-Welt.ws.

It is customary for Thießen royalty to accept the summons of the Reichswehr when they become adults, and this is no secret. The Emperor, King Karl, Archduke Franz as well as Archduke Joseph all served with the armed forces for their military service, receiving military officer training in the process. It is estimated that only 16 percent of Wiese's conscripts are accepted in Reichswehr service, based on a thorough system of evaluations of physical and mental conditions and motivations.

Many remember the succession crisis of the 1980s, when the Emperor first hinted retirement considerations, and the Imperial line included either people too old to succeed -an accusation still plaguing Karl Maximilian today- or who were failing to produce issue. The truth is that, back then, there were overreactions from the country's conservative elite, though this led to the restoration of equal primogeniture 174 years after its replacement by agnatic primogeniture under Emperor Franz Joseph I.

The end result remains visible: since both scions of Karl Maximilian produced a bunch of girls for issue, with only one son, the shift in primogeniture, other than promoting the equality of genders in the country, seemed to have served a practical purpose. And thus we are faced with the possibility for a female monarch for Saxony and Swabia, and by extension Wiese (if she is indeed elected kaiser) for the first time since Isabella the Beautiful.

Which brings us to the matter at hand: where is Archduchess Eleonore, the Thießen princess who will someday inherit Saxony and Swabia? Other than her apparently rebellious personality she has not been much of a media persona, and little is known about her. Among the latest confirmed facts is that she, too, is serving in the Reichswehr in this period, and this makes her the first Thießen woman to do so. Ever.

Despite the princess's unquestionable importance, she has been a somewhat shady character thus far. Her parents and grandparents have firm public profiles and solid public relations, but Eleonore appears to shy away from the fame other members of the Imperial House enjoyed in her age. In her public appearances thus far she has maintained a good image - but those are few and far in between. If anything, it makes some concerned that she is too shy to rule a country of 100 million.

Recent sources, however, point towards the fact that Archduchess Eleonore is much more dynamic than bad gossip wants the public to believe. It is, indeed, suspicious that we hear nothing, not even the almost customary royal scandals from her direction - but her enrolling as a cadet in the Imperial Air Service in September 2010 points to a firm personality. Insiders from the Imperial Army Academy, where she studies, imply she is strong-willed, charismatic, and stubborn as well.

And perhaps this is why we are not being shown what can be guessed to be the black sheep of the House of Thießen - not that the Imperial Family would ever admit anything like this. What has been silently implied to be valid, however -and that is through the lack of denial or confirmation, in an unusual silence- is that the Archduchess's current whereabouts may be currently doing part of her training abroad.

This leads us to wonder: where is she indeed? The military forces Reichswehr is known to have such officer exchange programmes with are all engaged in one war or another. Of course, Wieser participation in warfare without even notifying the Reichstag would be scandalous at best. Those few who know the princess's current whereabouts, Eleonore herself included of course, may never tell.

Even so, it might be a seemingly unimportant thing that can vitally affect the popularity of a future ruler, especially when her entire family seems to be pointlessly competing with the Reigning Emperor's undeniable popularity. (I have to make a mention for His Majesty here: he has ruled us for over 80 years and counting, even kicking the ass of two would-be assassins in the process. And if that is not enough to make even the most anti-monarchical communist nod with respect, at least try to sympathise with his poor son! Way to go, mein Kaiser!)

Now whether the Archduchess is in Nuremberg, Trier or Einsiedeln, it remains a mystery... or perhaps she might even be at some front our military partners are fighting at. The truth is out there.

Opinions: Three ideas for a post-war Solaren
an editorial by Georg Lotti, found on WW-Welt.ws.

The fact that Solaren is a country of lunatics, by lunatics, for lunatics is no secret. The fact that their leader is probably the number one such is no secret either, and his recent capture by Alliance forces means that we are close to an end for the military conflict in Solaren. Nevertheless, we are presented with a number of practical problems that need be resolved, the soonest possible at that.

Namely:

- Solaren is currently under attack by the EDF and Carentania alike, but they seem to coordinate poorly. If anything it is a promise for a postwar conflict.
- It is not Christian, not of conventional or acceptable culture, and not homely. Heavy terrorism is to be taken for granted in any post-war Solaren.
- Finally Solaren is an obvious threat to regional stability and security, with rumoured links to international terrorism - perhaps even the bombing of Augsburg.

These things create an unusual reality which the Christian, democratic EDF and the atheist, communist Carentania have to face. Solaren is not a conventional enemy. Anyone and everyone there can be a threat, and the communists seem to be understanding this firmly as they evacuate entire cities in their wake (either to avoid the possibility of native resistance and dump all problems on the EDF, or because they managed to get themselves such a horrible reputation through atrocities that even the minions of "Pope" Urban would flee in horror).

The source of all these problems is Solaren's materialistic, heretical culture, and heathen beliefs. Capitalist or communist, authoritarian or democratic, one cannot deny that this is a state like no others. Accept refugees and risk a complete moral breakdown. Give them help and they might stab you in the back later. It is probable that the only language Solaris know and respect is the thaler.

Some things can probably be simple to agree on. Solaren will have to pay indemnities for the war it started, perhaps even cede territories to victorious powers - as many foreign nations have made a custom of. Carentania is not above land-grabbing, with its recent history including a particular southwards expansion that even KPW wants us to conveniently forget about. As of the EDF, they have other pretexts as one can remember with the Otchi. If Engellex were involved, this would probably be proclaimed "Imperial liberation" as if this is some lousy video game you need a lousy casus belli to avoid a stability hit. And last, but not least, they all, all value the thaler.

And this is where we need ideas for: what next? What do you do with the millions of internal and international refugees? What do you do with the sympathisers of a raving lunatic who does not even deserve a free and fair trial? Their heretical beliefs can spread like wildfire in the honest, do-good, Christian (and agnostic and atheist, let's not hide behind our fingers) centre of our worlds.

I will present three ideas I see as necessary evils and will no doubt get me under fire - but history has previously justified such actions, and saved entire nations and empires from complete and utter collapse. One has to thank our pragmatist thinking, as taught in school, for this cold and cruel but necessary logic.

1. Forced conversion and military dictatorship: on the long term it will teach the terrorists and their sympathisers how "civilisation" is spelt. And it does not include guided missiles aimed at civilians... unless, of course, you are a government and do it without hiding (unlike some particular governments last September).
2. By flames be purified: the old-fashioned Catholic yet unchristian way to handle witches, heretics, heathens, and all things Solaren is famous for. A population that has the chronic disease of wanting to cause any and all problems imaginable for no apparent reason needs to be taught fear and respect - coincidentally, the same fear that they were inspiring.
3. Exile: Send them to Himyar for all we care. A few thousand miles souther, with a big body of water separating them from the rest of humanity, and good riddance. And this, coincidentally, solves the problem of war indemnities, as all that is left will be up for the taking, as well as resettlement with (more) civilised people. (Even communists will be welcome, at least compared to the Solaris. This is a golden chance for new Commissarian-, French- and German-speaking countries to rise up.)

(Allow me to clarify that Commissarian is the language built around the art of saying absolutely nothing with as many words as humanly possible. Developed by major Communist politicians and theories, some individuals have mastered it to the degree they can give speeches that last for hours, and in the end you leave the place not only brainwashed, but also knowing less than what you did when you entered).

Brutal? Definitely. Cruel? Perhaps. Deserved? Some people will say no, but I am a firm believer that it is. Nevertheless Solaren is one drastic problem that needs drastic solutions - and for once we can follow the Carentanian paradigm of exiling the local civilian population and replace them with our own.

Georg Lotti is a member of the German National Front and independently elected member of the Reichsrat representing Elbebruck, Saxony. The writer clarifies that his opinions do not reflect those of WW-Welt or the governments of Saxony or Wiese in any way.

Solaren accused of 'aiding in Augsburg attack'

The Foreign Ministry formally accused Solaren of 'aiding a third power in the recent attack against Augsburg' in the words of Heinrich Maximilian von und zu Babelfisch, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice-Chancellor. In the ministers words, "Intelligence suggests the Solaris regime played a key role in aiding with the recent missile attack against Augsburg". Breotonia was also accused as the country of origin of the cruise missiles used in the attack.

The attack, which used Breotonian-manufactured cruise missiles, cost billions in damages, in mainly cultural buildings and areas. Augsburg also suffered heavy damage in certain residential areas, and only early warning by the civil defence and the mobilisation of the country's air defence did help in minimising casualties. Since the attack, Augsburg has been rebuilding fast, with Swabian and Imperial funding and foreign financial assistance.

In the words of Graf von und zu Babelfisch, the government will propose "retaliatory action" against "all responsible parties" in the opening of Monday's Reichsrat and Reichstag sessions, despite earlier bills and decrees concerning the matter during September. The move is expected to bolster government popularity ahead of the 2012 elections for the Reichsrat, which is controlled by the governing coalition, and the Reichstag, which is crucial in supporting the government.

The political parties reacted with mixed feelings. The [wiki]Christian Social Union[/wiki] actively supported the bill, whereas the [wiki]Imperial People's Party[/wiki] recommended patience, to not risk Wieser lives needlessly. The nationalist [wiki]DNF[/wiki] is widely expected to fully back the bill, and the Christian-communist [wiki]KPW[/wiki] is expected to abstain from voting, on moral and ideological grounds.

Danmark: A trade hub for the Germanian League

Danmark has been greatly profiting from its Germanian League membership, according to various analysts and think tanks. Although with crucial internal stability issues, the country's membership with the Germanian League, combined with its strategic location as a link between the industrialised north and the commercial hubs of of southern Germania, has helped it become a valuable trade hub for Wiese and the League as a whole.

Strategically located among Wendmark, Eiffelland and the Empire, as well as providing links with Lorraine and Montelimar, Denmark benefits from controlling vital trade routes through the Rhine, which flows from Braunschweig to the north through Eiffel to the south. Its League membership has previously prompted international support for the country's internal issues as well.

In the more recent news, the CSU is expected to propose a $6 billion (RM20 billion) aid package for Danmark in the Reichsrat, to be delivered between 2012 and 2020, and help the local authorities combat internal terrorism and other security issues of mutual concern. This aid comes after past offers of assistance from Wiese, Wendmark and Eiffelland to aid Danmark deal with its internal problems.

With global tensions rising, Danmark continues to profit from its League membership as well as neutral international status, in providing a port free of EDF influence to reach the landlocked powers of Germania. Imperial analysts forecast continued growth in trade between the Reich and Danmark, which has already surged significantly since the foundation of the Germanian League in the fourth quarter of 2010.
In the other news:
  • Society: "German war effort" praised by social groups, in a rare display of German unity. Finance ministry reports donations in favour of Franken, Eiffelland.
  • Sports: Clashes between FK Pratia Strelitz and FK ZSKH fans following major 0-5 ZSKH football victory in Mecklenburg. Police intervention prevented the worst.
  • Culture: Augsburg rebuilding "proceeding at an excellent pace" announces Swabian Ministry of Culture. Damages "not heavy enough" according to reports.
  • Security: Reichswehr in 'heightened alert' following government accusations against Solaren; rumours that want military preparations not denied.
  • Business: Altaic investment considerations 'frozen' by Wieser firms, following escalation of conflicts in Himyar. "War is the reason" cite the companies.
  • World: Talemantros firmly against Altaic war on Engellex; KEF assures tensions will not interrupt oil flow from its Talemantine facilities to Wiese. KEF produces 1.43 mn boe/d in Talemantros, most suited for the Germanian market.

Montelimar humanitarian crisis sparks international response

The raging war in Gallia has trigger a large number of domestic and international refugees from the Kingdom of Montelimar, as Engellex military forces are rumoured to have seized the Montelimar capital of Valmy and advance south and east. Engellexic advance has been severely slowed down by vast numbers of non-combatants relocating as the front approaches them.

Many of these non-combatants have become international refugees, and have already began flowing towards nearby countries and especially Wendmark. The Order of the Silverless Saints, Volkswehr and Ascheburg proclaimed the two organisations and the principality's authorities would cooperate with Wendmark's civil protection to assist the refugees.

However the Imperial government has officially refused accepting refugee waves in Wieser territory, citing it would make their displacement "more catastrophic than ever" and it would instead assist Montelimar's non-combatants through Wendmark and in Montelimar itself. The declaration has sparked an outrage from Catholic and left-wing groups, most notably the Order of the Silverless Saints and the Communist Party.

Montelimar came under attack by Engellex following the EDF's response to Solaren's invasion of Lorraine. Currently Montelimar has been fighting the conflict against Engellex alone, with only indirect international assistance, as the EDF has been bogged down by bad operational command and administrative issues. EDF's problems and failure to defend Montelimar has prompted notable members such as Franken to seek out military assistance from Wiese.

Parliament approves security bill: "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Sicherheitsbereich"

Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Sicherheitsbereich: One people, one empire, one security area. These were the words of mixed criticism and praise by Imperial Prince von Schwarzenberg, chairman of the [wiki]CSU[/wiki], after the Reichstag adopted a security proposal by the CSU-KVP government in the Reichsrat.

With an overwhelming majority both the upper and lower houses of the parliament have approved the government's bill on Wiese's immediate and regional security. Under the bill, the government is authorised to proceed to preventive, pre-emptive and retaliatory strikes against forces accepted as causing a harm of Wieser interests, or being behind the September attacks on Augsburg.

The bill, which was opposed by the Communists and most independents for its vagueness and extent, was followed by a speech by Chancellor Reichsgraf von Baden, who proclaimed the fully-mobilised Imperial military is "prepared to bring the war on anybody's courtyard, if they seek to harm Wiese's interests or have assisted international state-terrorism". The Chancellor also accused Solaren of playing an undefined role in the Augsburg attack, citing evidence provided by international intelligence services.

Under the bill the Reichswehr, which is already mobilised under DEFCON-1, might be engaged in foreign conflicts if a number of situations demand it. Most notably it is believed that Augsburg will not hesitate to go to war if a Germanian League member state comes under attack. The Germanian League consists of Wiese, Wendmark, Danmark, Eiffelland and Franken.

According to unnamed government officials, this bill sets a precedent in formalising unofficial mutual defence pacts in the Germanian League, with most of its members possessing official bilateral defence treaties with each other. "We are currently engaged in negotiations that will ensure the League's sanctity is provided with extended terms to safeguard it" the source mentioned.

The Germanian League accounts for the lion's share of Wiese's imports and exports since it entered into force in 1 October 2010, and has already outlived the Northern Council, which now suffers a firm financial crisis as Suionia unilaterally pulls out. Wieser public approval of the Germanian League is particularly high. The core countries of the League used to form the historical core of the mostly German-speaking and Catholic [wiki]Holy Germanic Empire[/wiki].

This recent bill, albeit claiming to be aimed against those responsible for the terrorist Augsburg attacks, is a clear breach with established international standards and a proclamation of the right to wars of aggression. Wiese has embraced the ideals of imperialism fully on this day and the Workers' Republic will watch future moves of this Germanic Empire very closely. Rest assured that attempts to infringe upon the freedom of the Long Sea and bring Wieser imperialism to its shores will not be tolerated by Carentania.

Northern Council: Suionia quits dollar, currency looming before collapse

With the shocking news that Suionia has, amidst war and uncertainty, decided to unilaterally quit the northern dollar and force its relevant offices closed in their country, the dollar as well as the reintroduced Suionian crown, which is pegged to the currency. Suionia undertook the measures despite the beneficial trade mechanisms of the Northern Council.

Suionia now has to deal with the sudden loss of trade benefits to its major trade partners and a currency that lost a significant portion of its value because of its government's rash movements. All this during an invasion by Bantyr and Warre, which make the Scanian state face even harder times for its economy, especially through the loss of international investment.

Werner Wagner, economist, explains some of the possible consequences of Suionia's action: "Suionia came under a surprise attack, and before the smell of gunpowder could fade away, it formally cuts beneficial ties with its major trade partners and declares a currency change. Whether peace is imminent or not, the expenses and costs of these three moves, combined, give a lot of uncertainty to would-be investors."

The Northern Council, of which Suionia was the self-proclaimed leader, had initially been considered threatened by the Germanian League. As the Northern Council folds however, the Germanian League continues to operate silently and effectively, greatly benefiting its members and especially Wiese and Wendmark, both of which are landlocked but enjoy massive benefits thanks to the League Treaty, including effective coastal access across Germania.

Military manoeuvres continue amidst fears of international escalation

Before the ink of Reichsrat's and Reichstag's security bills could dry, the Reichswehr formally announced a wave of mobilisations and readiness drills to further enhance the Empire's security feeling. According to the announcements of the Ministry for War, besides the already-active DEFCON-1 alert status there will be strengthened border patrols to the north-east, east and south-east, and the Western Military District will proceed in Wiese's first international operations in decades.

Under the operations proposal, the Western Military District is to dispatch air patrols besides Wendmark's air forces on the Wendmark-Vistrasia and Wendmark-Montelimar borders, as well as two air divisions to an unnamed location that has been classified as "not a theatre of war at the present time". The location has been hinted to be within the Germanian League, with observers believing it is in Danmark or Eiffelland to serve as war deterrents.

At the same time, it was announced that several missile launches aimed as displays or tests were cancelled, implying the Imperial Army and the Imperial Air Service are saving up ammunition for what could be a massive confrontation. The government at Augsburg has previously declared Wiese will not hesitate to act if a Germanian League member is at risk.

At the same time the Landsturm and Volkswehr continue regular exercises for high readiness. "It is possible the Landsturm might be called to replace losses or man new units in the event of war spilling into Germania" observed Heinrich von Bumgarner, military analyst and retired Landwehr officer.

The Landsturm, which has over 8.4 million members aged 21 to 60, makes up the reserves of the military forces of the Empire, as well as the paramilitary Landwehr. The Volkswehr is the civil defence counterpart, aimed at supporting civilians, disaster relief, public order and defensive operations in general. Ever since the escalation of the war, both have seen heightened alert and more regular exercises.
In the other news:
  • Society: Public opinion "strongly favourable" towards increased Germanian League ties. 57% in favour of increased ties, 71% in favour of defending partner countries.
  • Sports: Pratia player fails doping test, name withheld by authorities. More as the situation develops.
  • Culture: Catholic groups to rally in protest of government's closure of borders to Montelimar refugees. "Borders not opening" say federal officials.
  • Security: Fuel rationing to be introduced starting 7 November; businesses and military to take priority over private consumers.
  • Business: Uncertainty in Himyar leads to an upsurge of oil imports from other areas. KEF suggests Talemantine oil is still secure.
  • World: Wiese mediating talks between Montelimar and Engellex via the EDF, say sources from the Foreign Ministry.

Though the government of Euskadi is glad to hear that the Imperial government is working to bring an end to the wars in Northern Gallia, the mobilization of military forces in Wiese does give us pause.

"The mobilisation of the Imperial Defence Forces commenced as early as the beginning of September 2011, when the Reichswehr and the Landwehr entered DEFCON-1 status following the illegitimate and shameful terrorist attack upon civilian targets in Augsburg. The recent manoeuvres are not, at any of their stages, irregular in any way. The Empire is firmly committed in re-establishing peace in Gallia, and for that purpose we are in close contact with our Carentanian, Engellexic and Germanian friends."

Germanian League: Historic Elbebruck summit on mutual defence

The Germanian League has began a round of deputy minister-level talks on mutual security and defence in the League's seat in Elbebruck, following previous rumours of increased cooperation being planned among the Germanian League governments. The League, whose members have been alarmed by the eruption of long conflicts throughout Gallia and Himyar and the possible threat posed by third powers towards individual member states and the collective, are discussing the option of militarising the economic pact.

Although a network of military alliances among the individual member states of the Germanian League already exists, a militarisation of the thus far economic organisation would consolidate these individual alliances and ease diplomatic strain and complexity. Germanian League-level cooperation on security already exists on multiple levels, such as with the joint aerial patrols between Wendmark and Wiese on the Wendmark-Montelimar borders, and past military drills in Franken and elsewhere.

"We are currently discussing the terms of consolidating the League's defence pacts into one" explained Foreign Minister Graf Babelfisch. "We have been in touch since the dawn of the Gallian crisis, but especially after the September Catastrophe our governments have engaged in firmer negotiations. The entire League seems to agree to formalise our defence treaties, and we will have a proper document for ratification very soon."

When asked about the Franconian press's claims that the Germanian League, as a military alliance, will be an extension of the European Defence Federation, Graf von und zu Babelfisch was very critical. "The Germanian League has no relations with the European Defence Federation, and its militarisation will be a strongly introverted, independent move. There is no alliance between the League and the Federation at the present time, and the public can count on this to continue."

However the Foreign Minister was quick to add that this did not inhibit the EDF membership of Germanian League countries like Franken and Eiffelland, or the relations individual members might have with the EDF. He also added that it would not influence Wiese's position as an associate member of the Federation, which thus far has helped it cooperate with its neighbours more effectively. "The militarisation of the League, if it commences, is not directed against any single particular power" the Minister clarified.

Kyiv legation to visit local foreign ministry

The Empire's legation to Kyiv, headed by Peter Heidelberg, will allegedly organise a formal visit to Kyiv's Ministry of Foreign Affairs according to sources from the Imperial Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The sources cite the reason of the visit as plans to make offers on mutual economic and diplomatic cooperation, although political gossip insists it is related to Kyiv's recent mobilisation of border and reserve forces near the Thuringian borders.

"The Empire has strong interests in Kyiv" spoke Mr. Heidelberg when asked during a telephone interview. "Our country has maintained peaceful and prosperous relations with all its neighbours in living memory and it is Augsburg's intention for this to continue. As such, I have been tasked with presenting the Kyivans a number of offers for cooperation on economic and diplomatic level."

The governing KVP-CSU coalition is expected to fully back the government's proposal, and several members of the Reichsrat applauded the idea. [Imperial] Prince Rudolf von Schwarzenberg, chairman of the CSU, stated that "the continued peace in Sarmatia is partly the Empire's responsibility". "The German National Front criticised the move, citing "historical Slavic aggression does not leave room for peaceful relations with Kyiv", while the Communist Party stated that "peaceful coexistence is preferable, but the government must not exceed the thin red line when dealing with fascist yoke."

Kyiv's government has been unavailable for comments, although Wieser officials appeared particularly optimistic.
In the other news:
  • Society: Opinions diverge over whether government should actively or passively defend the empire. Preventive strikes seen as an option by 32% of the public.
  • Sports: Hockey championship interrupted after accident in Metternich. Three injured after part of the safety nets collapsed on the crowd.
  • Culture: Augsburg Palaces to complete their restorations by 1 December, according to official announcement.
  • Security: Communists accuse government of escalating tensions with manoeuvres. Military, paramilitary, reservist activity "is routine" according to War Ministry announcement.
  • Business: News of peace in Gallia lead to loss of stock values in arms industry, Talemantine war with Altai leads to quick recovery.
  • World: Havenshire offers major arms contract to VRL. Company officials confirm it, state that it is "being considered with the utmost expedience."

Augsburg: Babelfisch calls EDF, Engellex to peace summit

Augsburg: Babelfisch calls EDF, Engellex to peace summit

Foreign Minister Heinrich von und zu Babelfisch confirmed that "strong progress has been made" during Wiese's mediations of peace talks between the European Defence Federation and Great Engellex. The Empire, which enjoys non-membership association with the Federation and close dynastic and economic relations with Great Engellex and several key EDF member-states, has been reportedly acting as an intermediary between the two factions for "over a week".

"Strong progress has been made, and I feel it is currently time to ask the right honourable envoys of the Queen of Great Engellex, the King of Montelimar and the Secretariat of the European Defence Federation to accept an invitation for a minister-president level summit under the wings of the Council of Ministers here in Augsburg" said Count Babelfisch, who also called for a ceasefire during the talks. He refused commenting on the exact terms of the peace agreement, citing they are still under negotiations.

When asked about the conflict between the EDF's latest accession Gorno-Altai and Great Engellex, Mr. Babelfisch stated that "the current agenda is mainly concerned with the conflict in Gallia, but certain mentions have been made". However, he also clarified that the negotiations were being carried out between the EDF on one side and Engellex on the other, and as such journalists should refer to the legation of Engellex and offices of the EDF for more questions.

Troubled international trade leads to private, government reaction

Although naval warfare has not been the prime of either the conflicts in Gallia or Himyar, its side-effects include a wave of price rises and shortages in primary sector products, especially in the agricultural industries. Several countries, most neutral in the wars, have reported shortages and heightened social tension as a result of the troubles international trade is currently facing.

After a series of international embargoes on the Talemantine Empire over the conflict in Altai, the Imperial oil monopoly [wiki]KEF[/wiki], which controls approximately one-third of the Talemantine oil production and reserves, has officially announced it will re-route the entire production of its assets in the country through the Germanian League. According to company spokesman cited this is to ensure the company's customers continue to be served without interruption. KEF produces approximately 1.43 million blue barrels of oil-equivalent per day in the Talemantine Empire, which covers a significant proportion of Wiese's oil consumption.

The exacerbated international situation however has led even the federal government to react, after popular calls through the [wiki]Reichsrat[/wiki] and the state governments. In order to prevent possible shortages, the Imperial Ministry for Trade announced it will slightly reduce import tariffs and slightly increase export tariffs on agricultural products whose destination is outside the Germanian League. The tariff shifts are intended as temporary measures and will take place with full harmony with the Treaty on the Germanian League.
In the other news:
  • Society: Communist rally outside Reichstag dissolved violently by state police, after demonstrators began singing banned political hymns.
  • Sports: University-level ice hockey league to be organised for Spring 2012.
  • Culture: Charity concerts in Augsburg Opera gather RM700 million ($200 million) to help relief the plight of Montelimarian war refugees in Franken and Wendmark.

Oil wars! Petroleum cartel embargoes Karlskrona!

In an unprecedented move, the oil-producing nations of Kyiv, Sorlandeten and Talemantros have announced an ultimatum and oil embargo on both Frescania and Suionia, member-states of the Karlskrona Accord and a power having opposed the Talemantine war in Altai. Under the embargo, fossil fuel trade between the three countries on one hand and the Karlskrona Accord on the other will cease by midnight on 17 to 18 November.

This move has Sorlandeten formally abandoning all guises of neutrality, now formally joining the Talemantine war effort and providing attempted deterrents at the expense of the Karlskrona, which was attempting to defuse the Himyar situation through their own, sometimes questionable diplomatic methods. The oil embargo is expected to temporarily reduce income for embargoing countries, though rising oil prices will later compensate for the losses.

Several fossil fuel producing powers have already refused joining the oil cartel's embargo, including Uusimaa and Wiese. However, although Wiese's KEF has announced it will honour the Talemantine embargo and will not export oil produced directly in Talemantros to Frescania or Suionia, the company has recently announced it would funnel its entire Talemantine oil production, amounting to some 1.43 million bboe, to Wiese through the Germanian League. KEF also announced that its Wiese-based natural gas production would be increased if necessary, to cover market demand.

The oil embargo has created worry with several politicians, particularly in the case of Kyiv. The radical stratocracy to the east of Germania has traditionally followed an opportunistic policy, as evidenced by recently-made quotes of its high profile political leadership, and the recent petroleum embargo makes Kyivan oil less appealing internationally. Fuel producers and (re-)exporters are expected to greatly profit from this embargo, as the embargoing cartel is expected to become less appealing sources of oil.

Wiese's market amidst the new Great War

The revived Great War seems to be raging without almost any interruptions or hopes for peace, especially as Altai faces the hordes of Cidonia, Kyiv and Talemantros, and the international markets, including Wiese's, are affected without exceptions. This effect is exacerbated by the "catastrophic" pullout of Suionia from the Northern Council, sacrificing prosperity at the price of vanity according to many analysts.

Although food shortages have not been felt to a considerable degree in Germania, Wiese has initiated measures meant to prevent or at least weaken the impact of such an event. Recently, food import tariffs were reduced, with food export tariffs increasing slightly, and now the government in Augsburg is considering subsidies to promote long-term agricultural production increases in Wiese.

The arms and fuel industries, by comparison, are seeing their profits increasing dramatically. Arms and fuel exports to the Germanian League have been steadily increasing in both price and value, especially in the field of firearms, armoured vehicles and aircraft. Wieser natural gas exports have thus far been relatively stable, but redirection of oil exports have led to a slight increase in the area. Increasing fuel prices have led to profit for KEF, Wiese's oil and gas monopoly. Uranium prices have been stable.

The mobilisation of the Reichswehr has led to a rise in domestic arms consumption as well. According to sources from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Heckler und Koch, the military has been ordering certain equipment to service, modernise or replace its storage stocks, which are expected to end up in the hands of the Landsturm in supposed wartime. The War Ministry confirmed this, citing that "we are ready to mobilise millions if it means protecting the Fatherland".
In the other news:
  • Society: Communist Party to submit Reichsrat legislation: "unban certain songs, they are more patriotic than threatening!"
  • Sports: Ice hockey, winter sports championships to "proceed as intended" and not affected by global imperialism.
  • Culture: Knights Hospitaller announce RM 1 billion ($300 million) have been collected to aid Montelimar refugees in Wendmark, Franken.
  • Security: Routine mountain warfare drills for reservists announced throughout the Alps, Carpathians, and Schaumburg.
  • Business: KIW comes under fire for "counter-distributist behaviour" by several small companies. KIW rejects the claims.
  • World: Franken washes its hands of an FR Europa announcement claiming it is sending forces to Altai; Sorlandeten calls for crusade against "Marxists in Gallia".

GENERAL STATEMENT

The Kingdom of Sørlandeten would like to make clear that it remains neutral and uninvolved in the situation currently taking place in Himyar, the decision of our government to take part in this initiative is to ensure a peace is agreed upon in the northern theatre of war. Claiming that we have abandoned our neutrality is a highly incendiary remark. The Kingdom is committed to ensuring peace in Scania.

World War Report: Scania: Tensions heightened after embargo!

The fossil fuel embargo announced by a coalition of nations consisting of fascist Kiev, would-be-neutral Sorlandeten and imperial Talemantros has failed in its alleged objective to remove tensions from Scania and now going as far as threatening another escalation as the Karlskrona Accord has taken the matter patriotically. Sorlandeten, insisting on its neutrality despite the Karlskrona attempts for peace it undermines and the cooperation with countries seemingly not interested in peace at their own fronts, is now facing tough choices.

The Suionian government, in their usual rhetoric involving plenty of muscle and a few nearby guns for supporting it where brute force might otherwise fail, has given a thorough response that undermined the integrity of the Kievan-Sorlandeten-Talemantine trade embargo and ultimatum. In its response the Suionian authority cited that peace attempts were being made even before the ultimatum, and rejected demands for reducing their allied military presence in the north of the Great Sea.

Things worsen in Scania from here on, especially for Sorlandeten: with their reckless alignment with the anti-Karlskrona camp and their demands, in the Suionian foreign minister's words, Sorlandeten has nearly issued a "war declaration". The truth is that Sorlandeten's act of alignment has legitimised any Suionian-Frescanian retaliations against the Borean country, proving for one more time that ultimatums can only help tensions escalate out of control.

World War Report: Gallia: World looks to Augsburg for results

After the reported ceasefire in Himyar, coming just hours after a Kyivan message of mediation but having yet to be confirmed or denied by Altaic and Engellexic state media, the world is looking towards Augsburg and Wiese's attempts at pacifying the Gallian region. It should be reminded that Augsburg is functioning as a gateway of communication between Dulwich and Nuremberg, with diplomats having previously called to establish a ceasefire.

The ceasefire has yet to be announced, however, and war in Montelimar rages on. In response, previously quiet Germanian countries including Wendmark and Wiese continue to gear up for what many see as a possible Engellexic invasion of Germania after Gallia has been dealt with. Others still speculate that the Germanian nations may be preparing for a preventive or even aggressive military strike to ensure their interests are unharmed.

Count von und zu Babelfisch, Imperial Minister for Foreign Affairs, remains mystical in his words: "there is progress, but what is important now is for individual negotiating factions to show commitment to the agreements established as a framework for a peace conference" he said, implying there is not only a peace conference incoming, but possibly the terms have already been decided for. "[We in the Imperial Government] are prepared to continue any and all sorts of efforts to pacify Gallia" he added.
In the other news:
  • Society: Reichsrat: Communists ask for lift of ban on Worker's Marseillaise, Internationale, and other songs. Nationalists oppose the move.
  • Sports: Alpine sports: Non-Germanian tourism expected to shrink this year due to international conflicts. Danmark, Wendmark, Wiese, Eiffeland to all be affected.
  • Culture: Tickets for the annual New Year's Concert in Augsburg and Preßburg will be available from 1 December. Emperor will attend this year's Preßburg Concert as well.
  • Security: Impressive display of the aged SK-105 Kürassier in Mecklenburg mountain warfare show. The ageing vehicle is expected to continue receiving modernisations.
  • Business: KEF: Stock value increases as international fuel prices go hiking on the Alps after irresponsible oil embargo on the Karlskrona member states.
  • World: Yujin tests new rockets, world reacts surprisingly positively. Could this be the reason they never oppose Wieser missile tests?

DULWICH, SATURDAY, 19th NOVEMBER 2011

The Right Honourable The Secretary of State has received the Command of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty The Queen-Empress to make known the following gracious Statement of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty to the Emperor, their Lordships of the Empire of Wiese.

An Extension of The Queen-Empress' Statement in Council.

TO THE EMPEROR, THEIR LORDSHIPS OF THE EMPIRE OF WIESE

I am instructed to EXPRESS on behalf of her Imperial and Royal Engellexic Majesty;

While the absence of a letter from the Northern Department has caused some doubt as to the authenticity of the Wieser declarations of ceasefires; it should now be understood, as will be explained, that Viscount Palmerston was unwilling to write on the subject to the Press Corps at Parliament until he had sufficiently established the fact that no misunderstanding or trickery were connected with those declarations from Augsburg.

We are, however, still in doubt on the issue of this important subject, especially in respect of the ceasefire for Preuti-Borussia, and are anxiously looking for further reassurances, with actions, from Augsburg.

In the mean-time, as there is a general belief in Dulwich that the negotiations will not lead to the cessation of further hostilities and the implementation of a peace treaty, in due to the speculations that are rife to the obvious manoeuvring of Wieser military units, it is not believed that under the present circumstances Great Engellex can move forward until Wiese begins the removal of the main body of its forces aimed at the Engellexic positions in Montelimar.

Should the reports prove true, that Wiese and Wendmark are in the immediate preparations for a pre-emptive strike against Great Engellex, the European Community should never find the ability to be encouraged by the diplomatic intrigue of Augsburg or the assurances of Wendmark again. There was some encouragement given to the co-operation with Wendmark to avoid hostilities surrounding Strasbourg, and it is sincerely desired that that understanding is not retracted.

So well known is it that Augsburg has determined influence in Wendmark, that any regressive actions by the latter will be seen as an extension of Wiese.

We also wish to implore Augsburg to not so busily employ themselves to undermine the diplomatic operations privately taking place between Great Engellex, Suionia, and Bantyr, through the release of statements to its national press. Diplomatic efforts in Saamiskavia are confident and being handled by concerned parties.

With that, it can be confirmed that peaceful proceedings will resume in Kyiv on the Gorno-Altai Crisis, as there is more confidence in achievements there.

By the Grace of GOD, of the EMPIRE of GREAT ENGELLEX, CHARLOTTE, the QUEEN-EMPRESS, through the SECRETARY of STATE, Sir ANTHONY PELHAM-HOLLES

Free State of Wendmark
Free State's Foreign Affairs Department

PUBLIC STATEMENT

From
His Excellency the Head of the Free State's Foreign Affairs Department
to
His Excellency the Northern Secretary of Great Engellex
concerning
Statements on Wendmarker Military Maneuvers

Your Excellency,

The Free State of Wendmark is both surprised and appalled by the recent statement hailing from Dulwich concerning the supposed plans by the Free State of Wendmark to carry out “preemptive strikes” against Engellexic positions in Montelimar. The Free State, furthermore, deplores that the practical ouvetrues made by Einsiedeln and the exchange of formal military liaisons between the two states, with both Wendmarker officers in Duwlich and Engellexic liaisons in Einsiedeln, have not been employed by the Union of Great Engellex to privately request additional information from the Free State. Instead, the competent authorities of Engellex have chosen the path of public accusations, ultimatums and further escalation of tensions, and this based on the speculations of private analysts and experts.

The Free State deplores this counter-productive approach that seems to indicate that Great Engellex is not interested in practical cooperation aimed at avoiding war, but instead seems interested in fabricating casii belli out of thin air. It is the sincere hope of the Free State of Wendmark that such is untrue and that Dulwich shall, first and foremost, seek an end to war and violence rather than expansion of bloodshed and destruction.

Wendmark further finds completely unacceptable the repeated formal statements by Dulwich as to the independence and sovereignty of the Free State, at first naming the Free State as some sort of vassal to Nürnberg, and now apparently an “extention” of Augsburg. His Excellency the Ambassador of Great Engellex in Einsiedeln shall be summoned post haste at the Foreign Affairs Department to receive a formal Note of Protest pertaining to the unacceptable diplomatic position of Great Engellex.

Additionally, the Free State requests clarification on the terms “until Wiese begins the removal of the main body of its forces aimed at the Engellexic positions in Montelimar”. Is it to be understood that Great Engellex indirectly accuses Wendmark of hosting Wieser ground combat units on the Free State's territory?

Reichsministerium des Auswärtigen
Imperial Ministry for Foreign Affairs

"His Imperial and Royal Majesty the Wieser Emperor and His Majesty's Council of Ministers find the accusations that the Wieser Empire is preparing an uncalled-for military strike against Great Engellex most deplorable and unheard of. There are no military formations of the Wieser Empire directed against an assault towards Gallian territory, and indeed, hardly any military formations of the Reich outside its frontiers whatsoever.

"While we can understand the concerns of the Her Royal Majesty's Government in Dulwich, we are uncertain as to where did Her Majesty or Her Ministers find any slanderous claims that the Reich is preparing for an illegal military attack on Great Engellex, in Montelimar or otherwise. These accusations cannot go unnoticed, not just because of their faux nature, but also because of the great stress and harm they cause on the relations between Augsburg and Dulwich.

"His Majesty's Cabinet of Ministers urges the Great Engellexic Government to immediately investigate as to the authenticity of these fallacious reports, and double-check them before such harmful stunts are repeated. The Reich shall not stand inactive when its delicate attempts for international peace and diplomacy are attempted to be set alight, be it by irresponsibility or deliberation of certain factions that wish the great relations between the Wieser Empire and Great Engellex to be torn asunder, with possibly catastrophic consequences.

"His Majesty remains a firm believer of peace in Gallia, and continues to hope in the progress being made through the mediation Augsburg offers to its Great Engellexic and European Defence Federation colleagues. It is His hope, and our hope indeed, that Great Engellex will not cease to trust its traditional friends and allies in the Empire in favour of these few who wish to achieve but unspeakable disaster and chaos in Gallia and Germania, in part by destroying these peace negotiations.

"Public accusations do not serve the purposes of either peace or mutual friendship, but merely to severely undermine mutual trust and stability with possible catastrophic consequences that might later be irreversible."

World War Report: Gallia: Augsburg to cease mediation?

Things look particularly grim for the Gallian conflict that might have lost much of its intensity on one hand, but seems to be facing a diplomatic deadlock ahead of it. Wiese's foreign minister Heinrich Maximilian Graf von und zu Babelfsich stated today that Augsburg "is strongly considering the possibility of terminating its mediation efforts between Great Engellex and the European Defence Federation". The reason for this being considered was officially cited to be "the open unwillingness of certain partners to adhere to agreements and hold their word", but Augsburg is reportedly very annoyed at Engellex's recent public accusations against it and Wendmark.

In the words of the foreign minister: "As a result of the open unwillingness of certain diplomatic partners to adhere to established agreements and hold their word, the Empire is strongly considering the possibility of terminating its mediation efforts between Great Engellex and the European Defence Federation. While the Empire and the Germanian League both remain strongly committed to establishing peace and terminating hostilities in Gallia, we cannot help but feel openly insulted by particular sides that fail to show the respect diplomacy requires, and threaten to establish themselves a very negative reputation in the near future."

The Foreign Ministry's announcement comes as a shock for the markets, although the Wieser government was quick to clarify this announcement is being made "on the grounds of transparency and has yet to reflect the conclusion of this story". Analysts estimate this serves as a final warning to both the EDF and Engellex to uphold the uncited "established agreements" before Wiese formally announces its final exit from mediation efforts. Unnamed sources from inside the federal government in Augsburg imply that Belvedere is very frustrated by recent public and private diplomatic happenings, as recently displayed in a Foreign Ministry reply to Engellex's accusations that Wiese is preparing a military strike against its traditional partner in West Gallia.

Augsburg: Burgmeister announces "peace ceremony", preparations for Peace Festival

Next year's Peace Festival preparations have already started according to Burgmeister Felix Elias Fürst zu Fürstenberg. Augsburg's mayor, speaking from the podium in the Royal Opera just prior to a scheduled concert, stated that the city was "firmly recovering" from the terrorist bombings that targeted and damaged a crucial part of its cultural infrastructure and identity last September. As the city's face recovers, the Burgmeister stated that a "peace ceremony" would be held on 1 January, intending to "bless the new year with faster recovery, more prosperity and unbreakable peace" for both Augsburg as well as the empire as a whole.

Next year's Peace Festival in Augsburg is already being prepared as well, as the rebuilding will be expanded to include a monument for the human and material casualties of the terrorist attack. Other preparations are also being made, the Burgmeister stated, but refused to release details. The terrorist attack, which was executed by an untold government, utilised Breotonian-manufactured cruise missiles to significantly damage a great deal of public spaces and monuments throughout Augsburg. Several missiles struck residential areas, causing some civilian casualties. Most casualties were prevented by the military's and civil defence's early warnings and quick mobilisation.

In the other news:

  • Society: Communist Party submits bill to unban radical songs and lyrics of popular hymns. Nationalists respond by drafting similar bill concerning "patriotic hymns", including the banned pan-germanist lyrics to the Imperial anthem. Reichsrat likely to reject both bills.
  • Sports: Early winter in the Alps, with snowfall already beginning in certain areas. Domestic alpine tourism makes an early beginning, international tourists expected mainly from Germanian League countries.
  • Culture: Archbishop of Augsburg Paul Cardinal Mayer urges "Emperor, Empire, World" to make peace before Christmas "on all fronts". The Dominican Catholic Church in Wiese will make donations for the Montelimar war victims through the Knights Hospitaller.
  • Security: Engellex accusations that Wiese and Wendmark prepare to go to war against it spark loud reply from the foreign ministries of both countries, and protests outside the Engellex embassy to Augsburg. The protests remained peaceful.
  • Business: World financial crisis worsens amidst warfare, oil embargoes, and general uncertainty. Wiese's economic growth for the last quarter of 2011 expected to shrink to the range of 0.5% to 1%.
  • World: Nicosian monarch shocks world, upsets loyalists by announcing the end of the country's monarchy after his death.
