Eight Hundred Dead as Yujin Rebels Capture Key Neighborhoods
AP Nokanawa

Heavy clashes between Imperial troops and a Hongmenghui rebel offensive in the suburbs of Liangang have claimed eight hundred lives over three days, with many more wounded. Forces loyal to the Yujiner Emperor Xiong have come under increasingly intense strikes by a combined Yujiner-Seoran offensive, and are seen as losing ground to constant attacks.

Wit oil reserves reaching critical levels in the Empire, armored and air support which has traditionally tipped the balance of power in the governments favor has become increasingly intermittent. Long, disorderly supply chains have also left many Imperial troops without food or medical supplies, enhancing the number of casualties.

The rebel push into the city has coincided with larger numbers of skirmishes along the Qiangzuo provincial boundaries, with many analysts expecting a large-scale rebel offensive from the region on central Yujiner cities. The total number of supporters of the Hongmenghui cause is currently unknown, but over thirty brigades are suspected of operating within Liangang alone, and the People's Republic of Seora has called for all able bodied men to volunteer for the liberation of Yujin.

The intense fighting in Liangang has seen several key neighborhoods fall to Hongmenghui forces, with rebels linking up with besieged forces in the Xiruanguan district. Accusations that chemical and biological weapons have been used in civilian centers have been made by rebels, but thus far reports of chemical-related deaths are unverified.

Lewisite, Nerve Agents Suspected of Killing Civilians in Liangang
AP Nokanawa

Hongmenghui commanders in Liangang have accused Imperial forces of using chemical weapons against civilian populations within the city, amid continued fighting. Hongmenghui forces relieved beleaguered combatants in the Xiruanguan district of Liangang on Monday, uncovering clinics filled with wounded and dead civilians.

"The [regime] is responsible for indiscriminate attacks on heavily populated sectors of the city," Hongmenghui commander Li Jinyuan told reporters who were permitted access to one of the clinics, "Doctors from Havenshire are looking over the wounded, and they have informed us that Lewisite is among the chemical weapons that has been used, in addition to more advanced chemicals."

Lewisite is a chemical agent which can penetrate clothing and rubber, and causes pain and itching, leading to fluid-filled blisters after prolonged periods of time. These are severe chemical burns, and prolonged exposure can lead to chemical poisoning and death. More than a thousand civilians are believed to have died in the month since Xiruanguan was besieged by Imperial forces, with several thousand more critically wounded. Many of those killed by chemical weapons were believed to have been killed by more lethal chemical weapons, or nerve agents, though Havenite doctors will be conducting tests to verify the presence of these agents.

"The use of chemical weapons against civilians is unacceptable, and we call upon the international community to witness the crimes the government has committed against its own people, and to condemn these abominable actions. Without a firm international response, we can only expect these attacks to become more common as the regime becomes more desperate to hold onto its position," Li Jinyuan stated.

Liangang has seen increasingly intense fighting as dozens of Hongmenghui units engage in a massive pitched battle with Imperial forces, with brutal house-to-house fighting taking place. The front lines of this fighting are routinely struck by artillery fire from both sides, and much of the city lies in ruins. The battle for Liangang has been raging for over twelve months, though recent fighting has increased to its peak intensity as Imperial forces tenaciously defend against constant rebel attack.

An estimated one hundred and twenty thousand rebels, divided into over forty brigades, are believed to be taking part in the fighting, with fresh troops arriving from Seora daily. Opposing them are two hundred thousand troops from the Imperial New Army, supplemented by armored and aerial forces. Attacks on pipelines connecting the forward fighting forces with oil reserves, however, have seen vehicles becoming increasingly uncommon in combat within the city, further increasing casualties on both sides.

Monkecian International Herald -- AP NEWS

Deep Monkton, Monkecia -- Prime Minister Creedo has appeared in public for the first time in nine days, issuing a strong statement to the nation. He responded to rumours that a general military revolt in Close'ath has taken place, explaining that a ceasefire is in operation to "enable medicine and other succor to reach the citizens trapped in the city."

Furthermore, the Prime Minister attempted to re-assert his authority over National Guard-held parts of Monkecia. He told reporters that National Guard commanders reported to him and that he was in total control of the situation.

Attempts to reach Close'ath and independently verify events taking place there have proven almost impossible. A constant stream of refugees has blocked most of the road, and what little space their is left has been taken up with military convoys busily moving equipment between the cities.

In other war news, Deep Monkton's Archbishop Tyb has called for a national ceasefire and peace conference. It is the third time he has attempted to organise a conference. The first, in the early days of the war, was rejected by Creedo, who assumed he was about to crush the socialist armies in Monkecia City. The second, issued last year, was rejected by Ffyllos who said that a pre-condition of meeting would be Creedo's resignation and popular general elections within two months of any ceasefire, which Creedo was resisting. This time, Ffyllos has backed the peace conference "100%", although Creedo has initially refused. Archbishop Tyb, the 81 year old Tibburian Catholic who has served Deep Monkton for over 4 decades, was however upbeat about peace prospects.

"It is a matter of getting international support for the peace conference. Cathiopia, Andaluz and other interested powers must press Creedo to come to the table. The socialists have this time laid down no conditions for peace and I urge all parties to attend the summit, which I will chair fairly and equitably. The rights and lives of Monkecians are too important to allow the carnage to continue."

A spokesperson for the Free People confirmed Ffyllos supported the talks. "Antonius Ffyllos, as the democratically elected leader of Monkecia, has confirmed he will attend the talks and organise a ceasefire as soon as Creedo is ready to do so also. Ffyllos supports efforts to bring peace to Monkecia and return the country to a normal democracy as soon as can be achieved."

Monkecian International Herald -- AP NEWS

Deep Monkton, Monkecia -- Peace in Monkecia? That is the question everyone is asking as a ceasefire, albeit a temporary and shaky one, has been enacted across the country. Earlier today, a joint statement issued by the National Guard and Free Army was released:

The Free Army of Monkecia, and the National Guard, have today agreed a ceasefire to enable detailed and constructive negotiations between political leaders. Both sides see no reason to continue fighting, inevitably to continue would result in further damage to property and destruction of civil infrastructure and homes, and furthermore the loss of life is far too great. It is expected that a peace conference will take place under the direction of His Grace Archbishop Tyb of Deep Monkton. Further details will be issued when known.

Rumours circulate round Deep Monkton that Prime Minister Creedo has been placed under 'house watch' by military commanders, as, just hours before the ceasefire was enacted, he made it clear that he would not under any circumstance negotiate with Ffyllos or indeed any socialist representatives.

It is believed that many countries have been invited to attend the peace conference, including Tyrrhenia, Kyiv, Cathiopia, Andaluz, Frescania and Auraria.

Province of Coronado declares Heredia illegitimate
AP San Vincente

In a surprise move that could save the rebellion, the Government of the Province of Coronado officially declared that the government of José Acre is not the legitimate government of the Aurarine Republic and that the general had no right to usurp the democratically elected government. The Government further declared that it would join the efforts of Roberto Urbina and fight in the war.

By order of the Governor of Coronado, Julio Raza, the National Guard deployed in the province will be split into two fronts. The first Army will move into Acacias and requested the rebels in Filadelfia retreat to Buenos Aires, where the two forces will meet up and liberate Aluche. The second army will be deployed into Navadijos to fight back the communist guerrillas.

The decision in Coronado has rejuvenated moral among the rebel forces, especially after the defeat in primer.

Deep Monkton, Monkecia -- PEACE, UNITY and SOCIALISM in Monkecia!

Antonius Ffyllos has declared a seven point peace process for the exhausted and war-torn Monkecia. Published in all state-run newspapers, he has issued the following statement of intent:

1. A total ceasefire for all factions taking part in the war, with the aim of unifying the armed forces.
2. A general amnesty for all accused of war crimes except for rape and murder if they admit their wrong-doing.
3. Immediate removal of wealth and private fortunes into the safe holding of the state.
4. A human rights commission which would present a human rights charter within four weeks.
5. An elections commission that would run free and fair open elections within eight weeks.
6. Legal parity and equity between Moonztans and Monkecians within a year.
7. The re-establishment of a basic socialist market economy across Monkecia within 32 weeks.

In three crucial months, the man has gone from controlling less than a fifth of Monkecia's population to now leading the country. His return to power has been well-orchestrated and effectively executed, a campaign which forced his enemies into accepting a peace conference last week. Although the peace conference saw what looks like a socialist execution of the former prime minister and his top general, Ffyllos has declared himself Consul of Monkecia and now looks to re-establish civilian government across the Republik.

Many challenges lie ahead and it is clear Ffyllos will need significant outside intervention if he is to rebuild the country. Free press has not yet resumed and large amount of communication infrastructure has been co-opted by the military, so it is impossible to verify news stories outside of Deep Monkton.

:exclaim:BREAKING NEWS::exclaim: Cathiopia to withdraw troops from Monkecia
AP Nkalamenga

In a surprising move, the Cathiopian government has announced its intention to unilaterally withdraw from the United Expeditionary Force, and thereby end Cathiopia's peacekeeping presence in Monkecia. Rumours of the decision started to circulate late last night, which were confirmed only just now in a joint press conference hosted by President Deogracias Kabila and First Minister Alfonso Gizenga.

Both politicians cited the peace agreement signed by rebel and governmental forces in Monkecia as the reason for the withdrawal, claiming the ceasefire and post-war plan invalidated the need for a peacekeeping mission in the country.

The future of the United Expeditionary Force had already been in question for sometime. Auraria is currently in the midst of its own internal conflict, and it was reported Andaluzian and Cathiopian soldiers had to be deployed to ensure the loyalty and commitment of Aurarian peacekeepers stationed in Monkecia. Frescanian lawmakers expressed reservations about providing continued financial and logistical assistance to the mission. Meanwhile, back in Cathiopia, Senators from across the political spectrum had recently criticised the United Expeditionary Force for its lack of direction.

Associated Press will provide more in-depth analysis and further information as the story develops.

Carentania training death squads in Yujin
AP Rijeka

Sources within the Hongmenghui rebels in Yujin have confirmed rumours according to which the Carentanian military is training special squads for the opposition with the explicit goal of executing high ranking government and military officials of the Imperial government. Reportedly, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Carentania began recruiting the most ideologically reliable and staunchest of the Hongmenghui partisans for this programm during the Yujinese invasion of Vangala.

Carentanian officials have refused to comment on the issue, except for stressing that Imperial Yujin and Carentania are technically still at war: even though the invasion of Vangala failed and the socialist country was succesfully defended with help from Carentania and Havenshire, there is no formal peace between the countries and tensions remain high. "As such, Carentania maintains involvement in far-eastern affairs with the explicit goal of bringing peace to Yujin."

However, while technical support for reds in the Yujin civil war were an open secret, the formation of these death squads is very recent discovery. Eye-witnesses report that recruits within this programm receive an intense training in small-unit tactics, cover operations, marksmanship and explosives in camps in Vangala before infiltrating Imperial Yujin through the mountaineous western border provinces.

Rijeka demands international peacekeeping effort for Eastern Cape
AP Rijeka

Recent developements in southern Himyar are viewed with mixed feelings by the Carentanian government, which considers the drastic change in Valkanian policy in regards to the black Himyari population a success for both the insurgents and the international community. "This is a considerable progress already, we've forced Valkany to acknowledge the black Himyaris as citizens, as equals and as individuals with rights," Commissar Tomas Jerman commented on the granting of full citizenship and equality before the law to the natives in the Eastern Cape. Until recently, Valkany had always staunchly defended the apartheid system and the lawlessness of the native population in the Eastern Cape.

However, the Carentanians have expressed serious doubts about the willingness of the Valkanians to keep their promises without continued outside pressure. "A peaceful end to the colonial conflict is the right choice and we believe it to be possible," the official Carentanian stance on the issue reads. "The task at hand is to give the native Himyari people trust in the Valkanian promises by forcing the Valkanians to keep them." Consequentially, Carentania calls for an international peacekeeping force to oversee the implemention of equal citizenship and the promised land reform. Especially later promise may become a source of conflict, despite claims by Valkanian media that the white population of the Eastern Cape wholly supported the equality of black Himyaris. Himyar was no empty land before the Valkanians came and promising the blacks "a piece of arable land" can amount to no less than a redistribution of land settled by white immigrants.

It is this potential conflict that Carentania sees as strongest argument for a peacekeeping force and Rijeka warns that the lack of neutral observers in the Eastern Cape and the lack of neutrality of Valkanian authorities in the looming conflict between black Himyaris and white Valkanian immigrants could bring the issue of intervention back on the table.

Tyrrhenia prepares peacekeeping forces to go in the Eastern Cape
AP Kastoria

After the initiative of the Etnaean Kingdom was approved by the Empire of Valkany, the Commissar of Armed Forces, Petros Souris declared that Tyrrhenia will take part in the peacekeeping operation and ordered the preparation of a brigade of the Revolutionary Guards to be shipped in the Eastern Cape. Commissar of Health and Social Provisions, Aniketos Papanikolaou also declared that medical aid and other supplies will be shipped in the Eastern Cape along with the peacekeeping forces. Tyrrhenia was the place from which the most criticism against the Eastern Cape War came from. The Commissar of Foreign Affairs Nikodemos Malaxas also stated that if Valkany wants to be again seen as "the civilized nation they see themselves as", they should renounce their colonial ventures and stop the occupation of the Eastern Cape.

"It is sad when events get out of hand so badly that the whole international stage has to intervene, but something must be done for the natives, to help them get over the shock that was the Valkanian aggression. We have joined the Etnaean initiative to help the natives as quick as possible, though we see this action as being one on the short term, in the long run, Tyrrhenia hopes to fully liberate the natives from any foreign colonialist oppression." Declared Commissar of Foreign Affairs Nikodemos Malaxas.

The Brigade that will join the peacekeeping force will be made of volunteers from the Revolutionary Guards and will be named after the late Tyrrhenian revolutionary, Agapios Iordanos.

Cantignian police arrests man suspected of spying for Carentania
AP Vesper

Metropolitan police in the Cantignian capital have arrested a mid-20s man suspected of espionage. According to the press spokesperson of the police, the man arose suspicion when inciting fellow citizens against Solaris refugees. During a control, his passport was then judged to be a fake and the man arrested. Recently, Cantignia had to endure a wave of violent protests by communists directed against the Solaris community, many of whom are loyalists of the former regime.

During interrogation, the man reportedly confessed to have been sent from Carentania, his real name being Shmul Davidovsky. The man, an observant jew, surrendered his identity to the police in return for a promise of Kosher food during imprisonment, the police spokesperson noted. He also hinted that there may be hundreds, if not thousands of Carentanian agents more active in the country. Metropolitan police cautioned against panic, assuring that it will locate and neutralize any security threat coming from foreign agitators.

The Carentanian government thusfar refused to comment on the issue, stating that it neither confirms nor denies the presence of agents within Cantignia "nor any other country".

Conference on Decolonisation of Himyar begins
AP Nkalamenga

The Cathiopian capital is host to diplomats from across the world today, as the Conference on the Decolonisation of Himyar begins. The Conference in Nkalamenga is the second major international initiative in response to the crisis in the Valkanian Eastern Cape colony, a conflict in which tens of thousands are believed to have died.

Many of the nations attending the Conference are also signatories to the Rijeka Resolutions against Genocide, the first major international initiative in reaction to the Eastern Cape crisis. Some political scientists are predicting the formation of a new power bloc in world affairs, which favours multilateral approaches to global crises and a legal framework within which nations can operate.

The Cathiopian government hopes the Conference will improve Cathiopia's diplomatic standing and influence. Senior government figures have speaking to the world press all day, and it is believed Cathiopia will pursue a number of new bilateral relationships during the Conference as well.

However, the Cathiopian government also has domestic considerations. The National Republican Guard, Cathiopia's gendarmery, has a visible presence across Nkalamenga today, with a number of demonstrations taking place across the capital, many critical of the Conference. Nationalist movements have enjoyed a surge of support in Cathiopia, and political parties like the Children of Himyar and the Pan-Himyarist Congress, together with the Trade Unions, demand full and immediate independence for colonies in Himyar.

Touyou cardinals say they were not invited to the conclave; call legality into question
AP Nokanawa

Cardinal Archbishop Yú of the Archdiocese of Fengtian and Cardinal Yukimura of the Archidocese of Nokanawa have addressed a letter to the other College of Cardinals, which has now been leaked to the public by an unknown source within the highest collective decision making organ of the Tiburan Catholic Church.

In the letter, the cardinals claim that they had not received "any advance notion, nor invitation" to the current conclave, and that they "have it on good account, that our brothers in Eiffelland, and possibly other places as well, are not partaking due to, as one would could assume, ecclesiastical duties or reasons of corporal deficiency, but rather due to not having received the formal invitation documents to partake in the conclave to elect the Holy Father." The archbishops did not state whether they believed an organizational problem or mischief to be behind their exclusion from the conclave, but urged the College of Cardinals to "take urgent steps to maintain the legitimacy of apostolic succession through the calling of a true conclave of the whole body of the Church of Christ. [...] Especially in tribulating times of war like these it is of utter importance to make sure that the souls of the faithful can find solace in a church that continues to stand on the rock upon which it was founded." The letter has been co-signed "In faithful urgency" by both Yú and Yukimura.

Traditionally the conclave has not been disturbed or altered during the proceedings until a new Pope of the Tiburan Catholic faith has been elected. Should other cardinals that now seem to have been excluded from the conclave also join the protest, the church could either move forward with an unprecedented step of calling the conclave invalid, an act unheard of in almost 2000 years of church tradition, or risk increased fragmentation and internal disturbances over the sidelining of a substantial part of the upper church hierarchy. Until now, Yú and Yukimura have only been joined by the Cardinal Archbishop Chang of Zhenjing, who stated that he had received an invitation, but could not leave Yujin due to the "need of the shepherd to protect the lambs" of the country, which is embroiled in civil war, but nevertheless considered it "imperative" that all who would seek to go would be able to do so.

Valkany grants autonomy to the Eastern Cape Colony
AP Zessionsford

Earlier this day Valkany's Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Colonial Affairs published the new colonial constitution of the Eastern Cape and proudly declared the colony Autonomous, under the name of the Valkanian Eastern Cape Colony. The local publicly elected government has been given great if not full legal, legislative and executive authority over the colony with mainland Valkany only retaining a grip on resources, military and diplomacy. The spokespersons both Valkany and the Valkanian Eastern Cape Colony's Colonial Administration though made it clear that autonomy is a long way form independence.

Eiffellandian cardinals join cardinals from Touyou in protest against proceedings in current conclave
AP Trier

Archbishop Strelecki of Weissenfels released an announcement in which he states that the Eiffellandian cardinals had not been invited to the conclave, either. He stated that he did not know the reason why he was not invited. He indicated that the invitation might have been sent but not been delivered. "In any case, it should be noted that Eiffelland is a large ecclesiastic province in which almost all people are Tiburan Catholic. It cannot be that such a large group of believers is not represented at such an important event as a conclave," stated Strelecki. He also indicated that he and the Archbishop of Köln join the Archbishops Yú, Yukimura and Chang in their protest against the course of events around the current conclave.

Valkanian government sued over Eastern Cape autonomy
AP Zessionsford

Anti-colonial activists in Valkany have sued the Imperial Government over the granting of autonomy to the Eastern Cape, stating that the constitution of the Eastern Cape in its current form violates a caluse of the International Resolution against Genocide. Valkany had signed the resolution under international pressure following its strongly criticized military actions against native revolts in the colony.

According to the activists, the constitution could not have been granted to the Eastern Cape under the provisions of the resolution, because it raises a special tax on the colony that is to be expropriated by the authorities in Valkanian proper. Furthermore the clauses concerning the parliament of the Eastern Cape specify that the upper house, to be formed entirely of white Valkanian aristocracy, can block the passing of any laws in the colony. These articles, the activists argue, violates clause 8 of the International Resolution against Genocide, as it constitutes "inequal status before the state and its authorities" for the colonial population and especially the natives Himyarites.

It remains to be seen whether Valkanian courts accept the charges and if, what their verdict will be. Even if Valkanian judges should find themselves in agreement with the activists, it could prove troublesome to implement: the Eastern Cape constitution specifies that numerous articles, including the offending ones, may never be changed.

Tyrrhenian peacekeepers attacked by an unknown assailant
AP International

The Tyrrhenian peacekeeping force was attacked this morning by an unknown group in the northern territories of the Eastern Cape. Out of the 300 peacekeepers present at the Tyrrhenian base, 68 were killed and another 134 are in critical condition at the campaign hospitals set up by the Tyrrhenian and Etnaean forces. The attack commenced in the morning, before dawn, with the base being overwhelmed by more than a thousand soldiers, sources say. The attackers were described as being mostly native Himyari, but between the bodies of the dead, white men that wore black hoods to cover their faces were also found. The remaining 98 men in the Tyrrhenian base are waiting for another attack to come soon and asked for reinforcement from the Etnaean forces. Until now, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Tyrrhenian government finds it strange that the native Himyari attacked their peacekeeping forces, especially when the Socialist Republic was the first nation that condemned the Valkanian actions in the colonial war and also being the one who supported the rights of the natives. Commissar of Foreign Affairs, Nikodemos Malaxas also declared that he would believe that mercenaries loyal to the Empire of Valkany are to be behind the attack, especially when the peacekeeping operation is not legal anymore, because of the declaration of autonomy of the Eastern Cape, the peacekeeping agreement being signed by the Empire of Valkany and was not inherited by the Eastern Cape.

Valkany publishes ultimatum by Kyiv
AP International

Valkany's ministry of foreign affairs just published the following ultimatum sent to them secretly by Kyiv while denying all claims that they were behind the attack on the peacekeepers
This ultimatum obviously demonstrates that the socialist bloc wants war regardless of consequences to the international community and is attempting to frame Valkany to advance their own goals of expansion.

"FROM: Narkomindel, K.N.R.R.
TO: Exterior Ministry, Valkany
COMPLETELY SECRET

The Peoples Revolutionary Government interprets the convening of the Eitlan conference as an indication your government is prepared to negotiate. As such the Sovnarkom has come to the consensus that it is the appropriate time to convey to you our demands. They are as follows:

1. Valkany will immediately evacuate the Eastern Cape Colony of all military and government personnel.
2. Valkany will immediately cede control of the Eastern Cape Colony to Kyiv, Carentania and Tyrrhenia pending the establishment of an indigenous administration.
3. Valkany will renounce in perpetuity any and all claims to the Eastern Cape Colony, its lands and its peoples.

These points are not negotiable and must be either accepted or rejected as a whole. If your government accepts these conditions, the KNRR will send a representative to the Eitlan conference to accept the surrender of the Eastern Cape Colony. If your government does not accept, we will not attend the conference. In the eventuality your government does not accept, I can offer you no guarantees as to what will follow.

Chomirac: Frescania will "lead from behind" on Himyar
AP Fortaleza Real

In a major foreign policy speech, Frescanian Chancellor Pierre Chomirac has claimed the United Republic will now "lead from behind" on Himyari affairs, allowing a more visible role for Frescania's ally and former protectorate Cathiopia.

Chancellor Chomirac's speech comes as the Frescanian National Assembly debates membership in the International Commission on Decolonisation. Frescania's partner Sylvania recently rejected participation in the Commission, although diplomatic pressure from Cathiopia, bipartisan support for membership, and Frescania's historical opposition to imperialism means acceptance is likely.

After the so-called 'Nordic Pivot', in which Frescania became involved in conflicts in Europe's northern regions, most notably Bantyr and Fey, Frescania has pursued a less interventionist foreign policy. The failure of the joint peacekeeping mission with Auraria and Cathiopia in Monkecia has further compounded this trend.

Socialist Party Chairman and Opposition Leader Cesar Vizquel has welcomed Chancellor Chomirac's pronouncement, as have many in the Chancellor's own Democratic Party. Yet a few have their reservations, with one Democratic Senator privately expressing concerns over Frescania's "global leadership position".

Cathiopia, home to the International Commission on Decolonisation, has also welcomed Chancellor Chomirac's speech, and promised to uphold the two countries' "unique relationship".
