Carentania places Asylan under embargo, threatens closure of Long Sea
AP Rijeka
In the wake of the Augustaborg crisis, Carentania has announced a policy of full economic embargo on the nation of Asylan, barring all Asylan companies from trade with the Workers' Republic and denying Asylan citizens entry into the country. Current visas will not be affected by the decision and Asylan citizens already within Carentania can continue their stay for the intended length. Furthermore, Carentania has declared half of the diplomatic staff of the Asylan embassy "persona non grata", expelling them from its territory. This maintains diplomatic ties with the government in Asylan, but is considered a drastic statement by the Workers' Republic.
The decision has been made over what Carentania perceives to be "a failure to take responsibility" for the Augustaborg crisis. A declaration of independence from within the city of Augustaborg in the Eastern Cape had caused a major diplomatic incident the last days when Asylan and its Tripartite allies immediately recognized the declared independence, causing fierce responses by the International Commission on Decolonization. Carentania claims that the declaration was fabricated by the government of Asylan and the current leadership of the city of Augustaborg put into charge by the Scanian nation. Rijeka has pointed to the prominent involvement of Asylan forces in the incident, the fast recognition of a previous unknown faction and further claims to possess intelligence data it does not intend to divulge with the public, which however support this theory.
Carentania has, according to its Commissariate for Foreign Affairs, approached the Asylan government in the recent days, trying to establish a lasting solution that will adress fears of the Eastern Cape and the ICD that "Asylan may repeat its folly" once the strategic situation promises higher chances of success. Accordingly, Carentania has proposed the incorporation of Erdenshire, where Asylan operates a major fleet base, into the Eastern Cape territory, offering monetary compensation to Asylan in return. "Without this base, Asylan would be unable to compromise Eastern Cape sovereignity in the future," Commissar for Foreign Affairs, Tomas Jerman, explained in a press conference.
This proposal, Carentania claims, was met by uncompromising rejection by Asylan and a refusal to negotiate on the issue. "Asylan perceives its aggression against Eastern Cape sovereignity as justified," the Carentanian Commissar for Foreign Affairs claimed, "it has only taken a step back because it met overwhelming opposition. This step may prove just an attempt to try again in a new run, given the vocal support Asylan has received by its allies in regards to its neo-colonial ambitions."
Notably, Carentania has also placed several units along the coast of the Long Sea on increased combat readiness. While it declared that it will not interfere with traffic in the Long Sea, Commissar Tomas Jerman has not ruled out closing the Long Sea to Asylan shipping in the near future, should the situation detoriate further. In the past, Carentania had been careful to avoid mere mention of its capability to hold captive shipping in this part of Europe, not wishing to bring unwanted attention to what is considered one of Carentanias most powerful strategic assets. Analysts expect the threat to be an intended signal towards the Tripartite Alliance about the strength of Carentanias commitment to this issue.
