FOREIGN OFFICE BACKS HÄYHÄ - Aanaari - The Saami Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a public statement today in support of Fennian leader Marshal Häyhä's government, amid rising criticism of the Stateholder for his bombastic rhetoric regarding recent tensions with neighboring Ostveg. Tensions between the two Scandian powers have escalated in recent weeks, after the tragic Ilka Statue Bombing last month. The bombing, perpetrated by Norse separatists in the Fennian province of Malminmaa, is the latest in a series of disturbances in the region. The province, claimed by both Kalevala and Kristiania, has long been a source of conflict between the Fennian Union and Ostveg, particularly since Austwegian Chancellor Bakken took power.
While stopping short of condemning or criticizing Chancellor Bakken's government, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that, "The government and people of Saamiland stand opposed to all forms of irredentism, seperatism, terrorism, and foreign aggression which threaten the peaceful status quo in Scandia. The acts of terrorism Malminmaa and the imposition of justice upon the perpetrators is an internal matter, the sole preserve of the legitimate Fennian government of Marshal-Stateholder Häyhä. Any attempts by outside powers to influence the coming proceedings in the Fennian Union, or to further exacerbate ethnic tensions in Malminmaa, the Saami government condemns and holds illegal under the Laws of Nations. The wishes and prayers of the Saami people go out to their Fennian cousins in these dark days, looking towards a future of new peace and justice."
SAAMI EXPLORERS REVISIT DAVVEASAARIA - Davvesaaria Island - Last week a team of 16 Saami explorers, led by Professor Isku Gealbaasi of Aanaari National University, traveled to Maniviedeljaarga Peninsula, the northernmost point in mainland Scandia, and to adjacent Davvesaaria Island. The team, a mix of scientists and other experts from Aanaari National University, the Saami National Survey Office, and the Saami Armed Forces, planted the Saami flag on the northern shore of Maniviedeljaarga before continuing on to begin a survey of the north and western coasts of Davvesaaria. This marks the first return of official Saami surveyors and explorers to the region since the first Saami explorers mapped the island in 1903. Although considered a de-facto part of Maattnuorti Province in Saamiland, this has never been recognized by international treaty. The areas is unpopulated and holds no permanent Saami presence, although it is occasionally visited by the Akkala Saami during their seasonal migrations.
The team will remain in the region until late July, supported by the icebreakers SLS Rhottu and SLS Lieaibolmmaj of the Saami Navy's Northern Fleet, where they will establish a research site for possible return visits, and conduct a number of meteorological and scientific studies.
